Rockferry by Duffy is a cool and unique album from this sassy singer/songwriter. Duffy has a very strong and soulful voice, a lot of people have compared her to Dusty Springfield. The melodies and lyrics are pretty and simple, songs like Warwick Avenue, Mercy, Hanging On Too Long, I'm Scared, and Stepping Stone are some of the standouts. The opener, Rockferry is probably the strongest of the bunch. The closer, Distant Dreamer is optimistic and lush with a variety of instruments that fit perfectly with Duffy's vocals. I wasn't expecting much from this album, I was pleasantly surprised with how much talent this gal actually has. Buy it today!

This album was basically a unique voice, experiencing so much pain, but doing it in a lovely manner.
The title song was not ideal for a starting song. It was a little annoying and bland. Warwick Avenue is a strong song, despite it's somewhat depressing tone. It's like a song you'd find at a pivotal moment in a musical. The message is gorgeously portrayed. Serious is kind of like a dreamlike or trancelike song. It's kind of light at first. It probably would have been a better first song than Rockferry.
Stepping Stone kind of echoes the sounds of the great Carole King. Very good message to girls, and it's a good girl power song without being bubblegum. Syrup and Honey starts off kind of with a sing-song sound. It was cute, but it still continues the blues sound. Not as strong of a character built by Stepping Stone. It sounds cute, but the message is lacking. Hanging On Too Long is another song about a girl who is clingy. A little bit stronger than the previous track, and focuses on the strength and range of her voice.
Mercy is upbeat. It is clear why this was chosen as the first single, but does not represent the album at all. It's fun and clearly written and performed. It is an interesting blend of pop and blues, and sounds like it could have come from the 50's, 60's, and today because of the mixture of sounds. Delayed Devotion is another song that seems to have a hint of Carole King in it. It's kind of like stepping into a sad moment in a 70's sitcom or comedic movie. It's pretty, but a bit unoriginal soundwise. The lyrics are cute, though.
I'm Scared sounds like it comes from the 60's. It's kind of lilty, though; while simultaneously being a bit sad. It sounds like more of the classic clinginess that is present on this album. It makes me wonder if she has self-esteem issues. She sounds like she gets too attached. Distant Dreamer sounds like it comes from a 60's or 70's musical. It's pretty and very open-spirited, but it is too beautiful to be on the album. It doesn't fit with the sad tone of most of the songs. It's very optimistic for an album of pessimism.
The songs sound great, but it's too much of a mixture of messages. She seems to be skipping from clingy to hopeful to independent and back to clingy. The album makes her sound too flighty as a person.

Simply tremendous talent and a very addictive sound. Along with Adele's "19", this album has been in heavy rotation for me for months, and the more the listen to it, the more I LOVE it. At first I was attracted to just a handful of songs ("Rockferry", "Warwick Avenue", "Syrup and Honey" and the radio-ready hit "Mercy"), but now I love about 90% of the songs. While most of the songs discuss heartbreak and breaking up, each song has a distinct personality that speaks to Duffy's versatility. "Rockferry" starts out quietly and builds to this tremendous fervor that takes your breath away. "Syrup and Honey" is one of the sexiest stripped-down blues songs I've ever heard. "Serious" sounds like a '60s poppy girl band song, but has a great feminist message (as does "Stepping Stone"). I only wish there were more songs on the album so it would last longer. Hopefully she puts out another album soon!

Duffy (originating from Wales) has seemingly come out of nowhere with this album, inviting obvious comparisons to other recent Brit-girl invasions of the US like Amy Winehouse and Adele.
"Rockferry" (10 tracks. 38 min.) starts off with the Motown-sounding title track (and first UK single) and the album rolls on from there, with "Warwick Avenue" (3rd UK single), a very nice tune. The girl has the singing chops, no question about it, check out the almost a-cappella "Syrup & Honey". One of the highlights of the album is of course "Mercy" (2nd UK single), which is finding airplay on US mainstream radio stations. In all, the album flows by effortlessly and sounds great from start to finish. Other highlights include a great "Serious" and the pensive but beautiful closer "Distant Closer".
I saw Duffy at Coachella earlier this year, her first concert appearance in the US. She acknowledged as much, and she was visibly nervous, but put on a nice set anyway, bringing pretty much all of the songs of this album, although when I compare her set to Amy Winehouse's set last year at Coachella, it paled (Amy Winehouse had major stage presence, Duffy is still learning). That said, "Rockferry" is a pleasant debut album, and I will keep an eye on her.
