Volume won't stay up - Review written on August 29, 2008

Rating: 2 out of 5

This is a nice slick looking device and the button design is nice. But as many others stated the volume issue is what killed it.

The pairing is a snap. I brought this from a store and set it up when I get back in my car in less than a minute. As soon as I got it paired up a call came in. The initial volume was too low so I press the + button to increase the speaker volume and it works great. I can hear the caller clearly and the other party has no problem hearing me. However when I start driving down the highway another call came in and the volume level went back to the initial level, so I had to press the + button to increase it before I can hear the caller clearly. At this point I was thinking it might be an operator error. So I call up a friend and sure enough the volume went back to the low level again!

I got home and take a look at the manual on the CD to see if there is some trick to set the volume permanently but there is none!

It is a slick piece of hardware but it is also a road hazard. Everytime when a call comes in you'll have to adjust the volume! Which is a big distraction!

I already ordered the Blueant Supertooth Light from Amazon. Once the order came in I'm returning this.
Pleasantly Surprised! Works very well with the 3G iPhone. - Review written on August 19, 2008

I've been trying to decide for several weeks which bluetooth speakerphone to purchase and have been reading a lot of reviews, including an OEM add-on kit, those popular here on Amazon, and also the one bluetooth speakerphone available in the Apple Store. Several of the devices are feature rich but alot of those features were not supported on my 3G iPhone except by third party add-on applications.

I had not read the reviews about the Jabra sp5050 until at Best Buy a few days ago. I noticed the sp5050 had been marked down to less than $60 so I used my iPhone to get on Amazon and read the pretty good reviews here. Some of the systems I've been considering were several hundred dollars so I thought what the heck, for $60 I would give it a try.

I took it out to the call, plugged it in and quickly and easily paired it with my iPhone. I made a couple of calls; one to home and talked to my wife and she didn't even know I was on a speaker. The other call was just to leave a voice mail on my office phone and I couldn't tell any difference between my iPhone or the Jabra speaker.

The features that are supported by the iPhone work well. Voice dialing is not supported by the iPhone presently so I can't comment on that. This bluetooth speaker is not what I consider feature rich but it does what I need to do. I have my iPhone in a cradle high on the front of the dash just beyond the steering wheel, so dialing on the iPhone large numbers is not an issue.

As stated above, purchasing the Jabra sp5050 possibly saved a couple of hundred dollars or more and I'm pleasantly surprised how easy it is to operate and the clarity of the sound...and it works with my 3G iPhone. It does more than I expected for the price, thus the 5-stars.

Overall, I am very pleased with this unit. It is small. Easy to use. The battery holds up well and charges from the car cord in a couple of hours. I have used it to carry on long conversations and that is where it really shines. The volume is a little low at highway speeds in my Honda Accord but it is useable. On city streets or stopped in traffic it is great. I have asked people who I talk to if I need to pick up the phone and they say no they can hear me fine. Once in a while I have to use the "Use Bluetooth" menu to get it to reconnect if I have been out of range and the units loose connection but that is just a couple of clicks on my Motorola Razor 3x. Many times I get back to the car and it just connects and we are ready to go. Other than the volume limitation on the highway I'd give it a 5 star....So it is pretty good unit....
lightweight and good clarity - Review written on August 12, 2008

With the handsfree law taking in effect in CA, I looked at several bluetooth speakerphone devices for my wife (she refuses to use those earbuds). The clarity of the Jabra has been very good, on both ends of the conversation. The noise cancelling technology seems to work as good as the built-in one in my car. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law have both bought one after talking with my wife when she was using the Jabra.

I also like the low weight of the device - all of these units clip to the visor, and it seemd like some of the heavier units were likely to slip off if you flipped the visor down.

I drive a 2005 Beetle. Road noise is too loud to make this effective when I am driving. The volume just isn't loud enough for me to hear clearly. It was a total waste of money for me.

I needed to get some kind of bluetooth device because I live in CA. I have a real problem with ear pieces so I purchased the Jabra speakerphone. While this unit is easy to use and does what it's supposed to do, I'm giving it 4 stars because of a few querks: It doesn't always pair with my phone when I turn the unit on and I sometimes need to turn it off and back on. I'm only able to successfully use the voice calling feature about 70% of the time but I don't know if that's a problem with the speakerphone or with the phone itself. It's somewhat difficult to see the LED readout and I sometimes leave the unit on. However, it has a handy feature that shuts itself off if it is not paired for 15 minutes. It doesn't come with an AC charger. You can either charge the unit with the car-supplied charger or buy a separate adapter. Finally, the volume is a bit on the low side. These are all rather minor issues. For the most part I like the speakerphone and I recommend it for anyone who doesn't want an ear piece.

The leds are very dim, so it is hard to tell when you get a call. I have to keep my phone in my pocket to know when someone is calling. When you push to answer, there is little delay before you can start talking. I've gone back to using a Moto earbud.Motorola HS820 Bluetooth Headset - Gloss Black
JABRA SP5050 RETURNED IN 2 HOURS - WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY - GET THE MOTOROLA T 505!! - Review written on August 01, 2008

goal: the loudest bluetooth speaker phone, the best of the best. i hate head sets.

1. i have owned the motorola T 305 for 2 years. with the new cell law in california, i wanted a hands free bluetooth speaker phone to make my ears bleed with LOUD, CLEAR, QUALITY volume, especially for freeway speeds and when i have my a/c on full blast, my window down and the radio on full blast, yes all at the same time as most people in los angeles.

2. the T 305 be called many things on amazon, but a motorola T 305 is a motorola T 305. the boxes may have changed, but that is all. the T 505 is a T 505 as well.

3. that said, the T 305 has only a small 1 watt speaker, possibly good for a cat or bat - i am neither. the T 305 is ok for quiet people, or people who do not have air conditioning on the highest fan speed, people who rarely use or do not have air conditioning, who do not smoke, do not have kids, never use the radio, never have passangers, never roll down their windows.

if that is you, save the few dollars and get the motorola T 305. you will like the 1/one watt speaker and you will be happy.

4. the motorola T 505 has a 2/two watt speaker, enough to make my ears bleed which is what i wanted since i require a loud ring, and yes, i DO roll my window up to talk, but at least i can hear it ring at 75 mph! i am not hard of hearing, but with the window down and the a/c on full blast, i want a loud ring.

TRUST ME, 2 WATTS IS MORE THAN LOUD ENOUGH - IT'S QUALITY/LOUDNESS IS MORE THAN JUST DOUBLE THE 1 WATT; 2 WATTS MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. i do not know why, but it does. 2 WATTS WILL WAKE THE DEAD.

5. back on track, i bought the jabra sp5050, WHICH DOES NOT COME WITH A HOME CHARGER - NO JOKE! jabra's customer service was super, super cool. they even said they were adding a home charger soon and even sent me a free one.

motorola's customer service, after you dial 23 prompts, is worthless, regardless of what continent you get sent to.

an a+ to jabra's customer service. f- to motorola's.

6. ok, my experience just a few weeks ago was when i charged the jabra sp5050 (in my car of course since there is no home charger), just out of the box. i first loved the cool, stealth design. BUT that is all.

i literally did a side by side comparison of the jabra sp5050 vs. the 1/one watt motorola T 305, had my partner call me from inside my home, and the jabra sp5050 was worthless. free or a gift, i would throw it away. BY ME IF FREE OR A GIFT- i would throw it away. i returned it in 2 hours.

7. spend the little extra, get the 2 watt motorola T 505. worth the money, calls can come in over a unused/weak fm frequency. since i am not a terrorist, i don't care if anyone can pick it up my stupid calls next to me in case they are listening to an unused fm frequency. is it perfect, no. i am not flying in a space shuttle or in a fighter jet.

*****i would NOT recommend calling a credit card company, however.*****

8. even if you do not need the T 505 to make your ears bleed or scare you if you are deep in thought, the fm broadcasting feature of the incoming voice over an unused fm frequency is really cool. it is so smart, it tells you what fm station to pick. or, you do not have to use this feature if you do not want to.

fyi, the speaker volume IS adjustable if you do not want your ears to bleed.

the mororola t 505 is a V8 engine, for sure.
***********************************************
if legal, i would marry the motorola t 505.

Works as it's supposed to - Review written on July 30, 2008

I hate those ear things. And Best Buy had about 500 different ear things and 1 speakerphone model (which was sold out). So I came to Amazon and this one looked good, based on the reviews. I ordered it, and it works just like it's supposed to. The people on the other end can hear me clearly, and I can hear them well also. The battery doesn't last as long as I would like, but it's in southern California where I know my car gets hotter than the recommended storage temp, and they warn the battery could drain if it gets too hot. So hopefully this will only be a summer problem. Anyway, I like it and I'd recommend it.

I bought this product based upon the excellent reviews it received. Unfortunately, in the real world its just not even close to what you would expect. The volume is just too low, even when set to max. I could not even tell when people answered the phone. If I had to do it over again I would get one of those units that work through the car speekers.

I have a sprinter work van and the ambient noise of the vehicle makes this unit difficult to hear at highway speed, even with the volume turned all the way up and the windows up. I will keep the unit in the office for cell phone conference calls as the voice quality is good. Perhaps placing this unit in a cushy, quiet sedan would render better results.
Jabra SP5050 Louder Please - Review written on July 27, 2008

Rating: 3 out of 5

The Jabra SP5050 is an okey hands free blue tooth speaker device. Slim, lightweight, with volume that is sufficient when using at my desk or in a room. But on my visor, even with my windows rolled up and the A/C on, I find that the volume level is insufficient. I drive a modern car, and the cabin ride is not noisy, but I still have a difficult time hearing the person I am talking to when using this device. Sorry.
Easy to Use and great design - Review written on July 27, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5

I found this product simple to use and effective. The Bluetooth pairing with my Samsung Blackjack was easy and connected on the first try. I use this while on the road either between meetings of on the commute with conference calls. The battery life seems very good and sound quality is also good on both ends. I am able to pair the system by simply turning the unit on and it finds the phone without issue. I have noted that at highway speeds this can be a little hard to hear so placement is important. The design is slim and fits in very well on the visor. I don't link the ear-bud headsets so this is a great alternative since my car lacks integration with the phone. Good product.

What can I add that hasn't already said about this item? It works very well. I am hearing impaired and I don't have any trouble hearing it while driving. The only con is my living room is twelve feet from where I park my car. The Jabra will take the call while I am inside my house unless I turn it off when I get out of the car.
Not bad if you don't leave the city streets - Review written on July 25, 2008

Rating: 2 out of 5

Living in California with the new handsfree law in effect as of 7/1 I had to get something I hated the idea of an earpiece so found this at a local store. It sounds fine, loud and clear on a city street. Get on the freeway and people can hear you but you can no longer hear them, very frustrating. I have found myself holding the speaker to my ear to hear the conversation and it's only 18 inches away on my visor! if you are looking for something for quick calls it's not a bad buy, but if you are going to have a conversation it's not the product to buy. The few pros on the product easy to sync, buttons easy to find, charge lasts for days. However it only charges in car and the cord is short, charge before using.

Rating: 3 out of 5

Have been using this product for a little over a month now on a daily basis on my 20 mile round trip commute.

Overall I would rate this product good...sound quality from the speaker is OK on my end but rated as very good by callers. Ease of use is as advertised and the unit is discrete and well designed. Syncing couldn't be easier and the auto off function is a nice feature.

The cons are that the volume could be higher. I have a good sound proofed SUV, but even then I find the volume from the device even at max to be 20% lower than I would like.

Overall the product is good and worth what I paid for it, but the sheer issue of the volume limitation will probably result in me buying an in ear headset, which I was trying so desperately to avoid.

Good looking speaker needs little more volume - Review written on July 22, 2008

Reasonably priced, good looking, and easy to operate. Needs more volume on the highways although other side can hear me well. Automatic shut-down is nice but it only works for a longer period. If you return before it turns itself off, you must manually turn off and on again to pair.

Rating: 3 out of 5

The first unit I received worked for a day and then refused to power up. Customer service at Jabra was a waste of time (1.25 hours on hold; I finally gave up), and you can't even email them your question without giving them every piece of personal information--name, address, phone, and so on--which seems unnecessary.

I returned the unit to the seller, JoWow, at my own expense, and received a new one, which works. The most important thing to know before you try to use this is that you MUST read and learn the difference between a "tap" a "press" and a "press & hold" on the device, otherwise you will forever be hanging up on people, not able to voice-dial, and so on.

I drive a pickup that is relatively noisy in the cab at highway speeds. However, I am able to hear people and they can hear me, which is more than I can say for some of the earphone units I've tried.

One gripe: when someone calls you, your phone starts ringing AND the unit starts ringing. When you tap the device to answer, your phone stops ringing, but the device KEEPS ringing for a few seconds, during which time you cannot hear the caller and they cannot hear you. I have had people hang up on me because they thought the call was dropped, but in reality, I was saying "hello! hello! hello!" but they couldn't hear me until the device stopped ringing.

This delay is annoying, and I am not certain if it is related to the phone I am using (LGVX8300 from Verizon) or if it is a function of the device that is just stupid. I'm going to keep it because other than that it does work well, and bluetooth earphones drive me crazy.

Rating: 2 out of 5

Don't know if anyone else has this problem, but sometimes when I first turn it on, it takes two or three phone calls out for me to hear that the phone is ringing and if anyone answers it (my cellphone says "connected" but I hear nothing coming out of the speaker). Also, you can't use your voice recognition dialing, unless you push the button on the phone that starts the process, shout the name of the person you are dialing at the speakerphone, and hope it recognizes it. It could be a bit louder when you finally do get someone on the line also. It is very difficult to hit the right spot on the unit to answer or turn off your phone while you are driving and it is very hard to see somtimes if it is on or off. And, sometimes if my phone is in my purse and not on the car seat, it can't find it and disconnects. And, it does not come with an AC charger. I called the company about that and was told that they weren't going to bother with an AC charger. Oh well. Maybe customers shouldn't bother with Jabra.

Rating: 2 out of 5

Ok, so the new cell laws in California are now in effect. So I go to Best Buy and pick up this set because it is the only one they have in stock and it looks nice. I used it for 2 days before wanting to return it at the end of the 2nd day. I liked everything about it BUT the volume. It isn't loud at all! I had to turn off my radio and turn down my air conditioning and I still had trouble hearing it through the din of freeway traffic while I sweated with my windows up. In a parked car, I can hear everything fine, but otherwise, it just doesn't cut it. I returned it to Best Buy and paid an extra $40 to upgrade to the Motorola t505, which I can hear through my car speakers.

Due to the California law, I needed to get a handsfree device. The reviews were good on the Jabra SP5050 so I got one and tried it and then had my wife try it. It was simple enough for her to be happy so I bought a second one.
If your phone Bluetooth is on (which shortens battery life) and you turn on the SP5050 it hooks up with your phone and you're good to go. If you leave the SP5050 over 30 or 40 feet and are gone for 15 minutes or so, it automatically turns off. It's simple and works well. If the volume is too low and you can't get it high enough on the SP5050 you can try increasing the volume on your phone. I have been happy with the performance and volume.

I got this product on Monday 07/14/08. I printed out the return label back to Amazon on Tuesday.

I drive an older car that sounds like I'm driving a semi on the inside of the car. At 70MPH, I can barely hear the caller. I was able to hear my caller when I was driving at lower speeds.

The other thing that happened is when I made a few calls on it, they were on the phone, not the Jabra and I didn't do anything to make that happen. That got really annoying really quickly.
Form over function - Review written on July 16, 2008

Rating: 2 out of 5

I thought that I had found the perfect product. It looked great, felt great and fit great but...

It is way to quiet for actual use. Perhaps my unit is defective but the volume level on the speaker is extremely low. Low to the point of making this unit unusable.

If you are looking for a viable speakerphone this isnt it not because of its functionality but because the volume level of the speaker makes it practically unusable.

I'm going to send it back and try again with a different unit - if its the same this review will stand - if it has a decent speaker volume than I will update this review.

Great operation but not loud enough - Review written on July 15, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5

I have two of these - one in my wife's Passat and the other in my tundra limited truck. Great operation with my wife's and my iPhones as well as my Moto Razr phone. Pairing is a piece of cake and the feature of the phone re-pairing after being turned on works flawlessly.

This product would be 5 stars in my book if the volume was louder. Note that volume *level* is controlled by either the phone or the unit, but the volume *output* is limited by the unit' amp and speaker. For all but the absolute quietest situations, the volume is simply not loud enough for reliable use in a car. Even sitting on my desk as a speakerphone, the volume is insufficient if there is any level of background noise.

Noise cancelling and sound quality (from my callers' perspective) is very good.
