T505 not up to snuff - Review written on August 29, 2008

The Motorola T505 bluetooth in-car hands free device does not work well. After you figure out where the on and off button is (rear left) and that you must wait for a half minute before you can activate an FM channel, you can proceed to be disappointed. Once you have it and your phone on, you push an FM button (rear right) and watch a tiny white light flash (can't see it in full sun) and wait for a recorded announcement to tell you that you should now tune your radio to FM channel 91.5 (for example). When you do, you should be able to hear incoming and outgoing calls through your car stereo system, when tuned to that station. However, if you are on the road, forget it. You lose the FM station so often that when you take a call it doesn't work. The frustration grows when you find that the device drops out frequently, even around town. When you finally figure out that you aren't able to hear the call on your car stereo, you push the FM button again (watch the light flash) and then hear that you should tune to ANOTHER FM station and this happens over and over again. If you're lucky, you make or receive a call right after tuning to the latest FM channel and hang up before your call is dropped. It's a pain in the butt, nothing else. Wouldn't recommend it.

A couple of months ago, I purchased the Motorola T505 hands free unit which had really great reviews. I'm very happy with it, the sound quality is very clear and will even work though my car's stereo (but doesn't need to).
Recently, I had an interesting experience with the T505. I live in a condo. My car is parked in the garage at ground level. My condo is 4 floors up from the ground. I don't usually have to turn off the T505 when I leave the car because the bluetooth connection normally breaks by the time I get to the elevator (it also turns itself off after 10 mins of no connection). Usually but not today.
My cell phone was ringing and I could not hear the person on the other end, so I hung up and tried to call back. I still couldn't hear anything. Then I notice, the bluetooth symbol is still blinking on my phone. The T505 is still connected. I had to go back down to the garage and turn it off before I could use the phone.
If you want a handsfree unit with a strong signal and clear audio, I highly recommend the Motorola T505. Just remember to turn it off when you leave the car. :)
Also, since I live in the Los Angeles area, it's a bit difficult to find and station that the T505 can play through for a long period of time. The airwaves here are very crowded. In a more open area it works fine but as I said in a large city, it's hard to use that feature. I haven't missed it though because the speaker is so clear.
Probably best of what's available right now. Good for podcasts and calls, not music - Review written on August 06, 2008

This device has problems, but I would say it's the best choice if you must pick something like this right now. Others are worse or have fewer features.
I have a Motorola Q9C and pairing and all features including voice dialing work fine and it charges with the same charger.
I had a Supertooth LightBlueAnt Supertooth Light Bluetooth Speakerphone and was going to upgrade to the new Supertooth 3 BlueAnt Supertooth 3 Bluetoothto take advantage of the text to speech caller ID but, like many others have experienced with the Supertooth 3, it failed to import my contacts and did not transfer contacts manually either even after help from tech support. If it doesn't import your contacts, the text to speech doesn't work and that's the point of getting that device. It was buggy or may have been defective (mic not working right and a/c adapter buzzed). I decided to just return it and bought the T505 instead.
I like the smaller size of the T-505 and the spoken number caller-id (not as good as the caller-ID that was supposed to speak the caller's name promised by the Supertooth 3, but better than nothing. After a while you will start to remember numbers and the phone number alone will be enough to recognize frequent callers.
How many phone numbers have you already forgotten due to always relying on saved contacts?
One major problem this unit has that all similar devices have is much too much range in the bluetooth connection. Does anyone want the pairing to continue when the device is in your car outside or in the garage and you are inside behind walls? No. So why does it have a 30 foot range when it isn't usable from that distance and may cause you to miss calls?
You have to remember to turn if off when you park unless you are going to take the phone at least 30 feet away from the car.
When a company makes one of these with bluetooth that can be turned down to a 10 foot pairing range or less, it may be worth 5 stars.
Because of the small size and buttons on all sides, it's difficult to grab it and take it off the visor without unintentionally pressing buttons. Grabbing the wrong spot could accidently skip tracks in the middle of a long podcast or change the broadcast to a different FM station when you were already on the best station.
The FM broadcast feature is poor for streaming music from your bluetooth phone. It might sound good for a few minutes when you are at first amazed that music works at all, but then you will notice it sounds kind of crappy compared to playing the music by other methods (CD, hard wired connection to your MP3s or even live local FM radio).
The sound quality streaming wirelessly from your phone is worse than a FM radio station and you will hear lots of distortion and static on bass and drums even at low volume. Changing stations doesn't cure it. It got annoying after only a few minutes, so I gave up on wirelessly streaming music. If you have a really cheap car stereo with the fidelity of a clock radio, you might not notice much difference.
However, it is more than good enough for phone calls and audio podcasts even on a nice car stereo. I rarely heard any distortion at all on podcasts. Phone calls are as clear as your cellular connection is at the time, but louder and through your stereo speakers.
The internal speaker is loud enough that you don't need to rely on playing the audio from phone calls over the car speakers when driving around town. It's just nicer to hear through the stereo as if you got factory bluetooth.
At highway speed it will be a bit difficult to hear though the internal speaker, so the FM broadcast over your cars speakers may be needed then.
Bleant Supertooth Light has a louder integrated speaker and needs it since there is no option to play the Blueant over the cars speakers.
If you set the T-505 to broadcast your phone calls via FM, it will still revert back to the internal speaker after a few minutes if the FM is not actively in use for streaming audio or calls. So, if you are listening to a CD and the phone rings, you cannot just quickly switch to FM and answer the call. You will either need to use the internal speaker or reach behind it and activate the FM again and also switch your stereo to FM mode. It's only seamless to use your car radio for phone audio if you are actively streaming music or podcasts that will keep the FM connection alive. I listen to podcasts via bluetooth A2DP from my phone almost all the time, so this works out OK for me.
If you use certain phones (such as a Windows Mobile smartphone like my Q9C) it will pause the streaming audio when you take the call and then automatically resume playing from where it left off when the call ends.
You can save certain FM stations it selects for you as preferred on the T-505 and then save those as presets on your car stereo to save alot of time rescanning when you are driving in your local area.

I bought the Motorola MOTOROKR T505 for use with a basic external (Jabra) Bluetooth transceiver and my Nokia 8890 cell phone. I wound up returning the MOTOROKR, for the following reasons.
1) I found the quality of the speaker to be awful -- very tinny, difficult to understand when driving.
2) The FM transmitter "times out" after a short period of time.
I found the pairing process easy. I found the volume to be excellent. I found the quality of the voice using the FM transmitter was excellent, but I found it unacceptable that the FM transmitter times out. I intended to use the MOTOROKR with the FM transmitter; I intended to be listening to my car stereo using another FM channel or CD, then tune to the channel the MOTOROKR was using when I received a call. No such luck. In addition to the FM transmitter timing out, I also found that, when the FM transmitter was engaged and I was receiving an incoming call, the ring tone was not broadcast by the speaker in the T505 (remember, I would be listening to another FM station when a call would come in); the only ring was from my phone itself (not very loud). So, my intended mode of use was not practical with the T505. I don't know if all of these shortcomings would still occur if my phone itself had a built-in Bluetooth transceiver, but it doesn't, and I like my phone just fine.
IF LEGAL, I WOULD MARRY THE MOTOROLA T 505!!!!!! 2 WATTS MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE - DON'T BE A CHEAPO, SPEND THE MONEY. - Review written on August 02, 2008

goal: the loudest bluetooth speaker phone on the market. the best of the best. i hate head sets. i want my ears to bleed.
*****if loud is what you want, read on.*****
1. i have owned the 1/one watt motorola T 305 for 2 years. it was not loud enough for me, so i never liked or used it. with the new cell law in california, i wanted a hands free bluetooth speaker phone to make my ears bleed with LOUD, CLEAR, QUALITY volume, especially for freeway speeds.
why? when i have my a/c on full blast, the radio on full blast, my windows are down when i smoke, even in the rain. even when not smoking i have my windows down. i want volume and to hear it ring. i do not want crappy low volume bluetooth speaker phones, period. yes, when i use it, i do roll my windows up, but I WANT TO HEAR IT RING.
2. the T 305 may be called many things on amazon, but a motorola T 305 is a motorola T 305. the boxes may have changed, but that is all. the T 505 is called many different things on amazon, but a T 505 is a T 505.
3. that said, the T 305 has only a small, weak 1 watt speaker, possibly good for a cat or bat - i am neither in my current life.
4. the T 305 is ok for quiet people, people who do not have air conditioning on the highest fan speed, people who rarely use or do not have air conditioning, people who do not smoke, people who never roll their window down, do not have kids, never use the radio, never have passangers, or people who like to drive at posted speed limits. if this is you, the 1/one watt T 305 is for you. read no further. save the few dollars and get the motorola T 305. you will like the 1/one watt speaker and be happy.
5. the motorola T 505 has a 2/two watt speaker, enough to make my ears bleed which is what i wanted, my goal.
6. TRUST ME, 2 WATTS IS MORE THAN LOUD ENOUGH - THE T 505 QUALITY/LOUDNESS IS MORE THAN JUST DOUBLE THE 1 WATT; 2 WATTS MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. i do not know why, but 2 watts is exponentially louder than just 1 watt. 2 WATTS WILL WAKE THE DEAD, if that is what you want.
7. back on track, i bought the jabra sp5050, WHICH DOES NOT COME WITH A HOME CHARGER - NO JOKE! jabra's customer service was super, super cool. they even said they were adding a home charger soon and even sent me a free one!
8. motorola's customer service, after you dial 23 prompts, is worthless, regardless of which continent you get sent to.
an a+ to jabra's customer service. f- to motorola's.
9. my experience just a few weeks ago was when i charged the jabra sp5050 (in my car since it did not have a home charger), right out of the box. i first loved the cool, stealth design, BUT that is all.
i literally did a side by side comparison of the jabra sp5050 compared to my T 305 on my visor, had my partner call me from inside my home, and the jabra sp5050 was so bad i would throw it away EVEN IF IT WAS FREE OR GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT. the jabra went back in 2 hours!
10. spend the little extra, get the motorola T 505. worth the money, calls can come in over a unused/weak fm frequency. since i am not a terrorist, i don't care if anyone can pick it up my stupid calls next to me in case they are listening to an unused fm frequency. i would NOT recommend calling a credit card company, however.
11. even if you do not need the T 505 to make your ears bleed or scare you if you are deep in thought, the broadcasting feature of the incoming voice over an unused fm frequency is really cool. it is so smart, it tells you what fm station to pick; or, you do not have to use the fm feature.
12. fyi, the speaker volume is adjustable so you are not scared by the loud ringing, and if you do not want your ears to bleed.
13. I AM NOT GOING TO GET INTO ENGINEERING SPECIFICS. I WILL SAY IT IS 95% PERFECT, AN EXCELLENT SOUND, AND EASY TO USE. THESE WERE MY GOALS. the mororola t 505 is a full throttle V8 engine, for sure.
13. if legal, i would marry the motorola t 505.
2 WATTS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. TRY IT AND PROVE IT TO YOURSELF, NO NEED TO TAKE MY WORD. RETURN IT IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT....
