lame lyrics - Review written on June 29, 2008

Lame lyrics makes CD torture to listen to. Songs on the CD sound childish.
For example, "I woke up this morning with a funny taste in my head.
Spackled some butter over my whole grain bread.
Something tastes different, maybe it's my tongue.
Something tastes different, suddenly I'm not so young."

Tried to give it away, but nobody wanted it.

Ingrid Michaelson has this voice that can be like a Tori Amos or Jewel. I love this CD and I hope that she puts another one out with the song from Grey's Anatomy "Keep Breathing" which is another great song. Most people have heard a song from this album "The Way I Am" was on a JCPenny commercial. The songs "Hat" & "December Baby" are also great songs on this CD.

I took a gamble and bought this album knowing just one song, a gamble which hasn't typically paid off for me. Lo and behold, a pleasant surprise. The album has a breezy sound and provides a nice little pleasant escape from the hectic road trip into work. I definitely plan to continue following this artist's work. Take a chance. It's well worth it.

I've seen Ingrid live and she is just as incredible as this CD in person. Her music is organic and is really something to believe in. She is the next big thing, I can't wait to hear her new music to come!
Ingrid Michaelson, "Girls and Boys" - Review written on April 07, 2008

Ingrid Michaelson's "Girls and Boys" is just what the doctor ordered for the intelligent-intimate-and-colorful-music deprived.

The Indie-pop newcomer's sophomore album has a revitalizing effect.

Surely not by accident, Michaelson's complex style is masked as simple and soft by the songstress' delicate vocals, alternative guitar strumming, pretty piano playing and trouble-free beats.

Delving into the album's beauty and falling in love with Michaelson's voice is easy from first listen. The best part of this album is Michaelson's ability to say so much with so few words.

Just over two minutes in length, "The Way I Am" is perhaps the best song on this 12-track jewel. Its soothing quality will leave you purring:

"I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair/Sew on patches to all you tear/Cuz I love you more than I could ever promise/And you take me the way I am."

"Masochist" is another great among greats. Undoubtedly personal, the song tells of letting yourself fall in love with a person even though it is clear the relationship is not destined to succeed:

"She says you're a masochist for falling for me/So roll up your sleeves/And I think that I like her/Cuz she tells me things I don't want to hear/Medicinal tongue in my ear/... When will it start? My broken part?"

Putting down your guard and giving in to your softer side is the story behind "Overboard":

"I could write my name by the age of three/And I don't need anyone cut my meat for me/I'm a big girl now/See my big girl shoes/It'll take more than just a breeze to make me/Fall over, fall over, fall overboard."

"Girls and Boys" is sure to stay on repeat for days on end.

The CD I received is damaged. It skips every two seconds and you can't hear a full voice flow. Very disappointed!

If you've heard her on Old Navy ads, chances are you might be seeing this geeky girl who takes control of her voice and never goes way off on it. The tracks are pretty cool, and the music is somewhat a bit tired, but nonethless, it makes good for a great CD!

Found a lot of the words in the songs were repetitive. When the words weren't repeated over and over they were original and I liked them a lot.

I know this album has been out for a while, but I'm slow when it comes to finding new music. I was prompted to get this CD because I was going to see Ingrid Michaelson perform (among others) as part of the Hotel Cafe tour, and I wanted to be at least some what knowledgeable about her work. I'm glad I got this album because it's great! It's uplifting when it wants to be, sentimental and more downbeat when it wants to be, and she has a wonderfully sweet voice to boot. Plus, she is amazing live, and just because of that, she gets double the points from me! The one tiny disappointment that I have with this album is that it doesn't include "Keep Breathing," but it's great nonetheless.

I read a couple of reviews on here and didn't like what I saw. Mainly people bought this album because they like the song "The Way I Am." Don't get me wrong, that is an amazing song, but if that was the only reason my best guess is they don't listen to any other folk music. This is a breakthrough for folk music, getting to actually hear some good folk on a TV commercial (and the radio from what I've been told). Check out this album, no matter who you are, and don't expect it to be the normal mainstream. This is what actual talent sounds like. Personally, breakable is my favorite song because there lies her true voice and the right pitch for the music. Be ready to hear something you're not used to all you mainstream-only listeners.

I bought this album because of the hit now playing on the radio. I wish the lyrics came with the album. When I play the disk in my car there is no album information. That is the only cd that won't display information. In all, there are 3 songs that I can say I really enjoy. The rest of them sound all the same and silly. Sometimes I wonder whether the target consumer for this album was children.

I like a few songs on here, Ingrid is mega-talented and I love the sound of her voice. I do think that a lot of the tunes on this cd do sound quite a bit alike. I'll just download my faves onto my Ipod and call it good!

Ingrid Michaelson has a beautiful voice and is very talented. I love all the songs on this CD and I listen to it often. She had kind of a folk/pop sound and if you like Feist or Regina Spektor you'll probably like Ingrid Michaelson as well.

I initially heard a snippet of the song "The Way I Am" on a TV commercial. So I searched for the lyrics to see who sang it, and thats how I found out about Ingrid Michaelson. I bought the CD because of that one song, but the CD is filled with so many other great songs. Girls and Boys is currently my #1 CD in my car. I'm probably going to wear it out cuz I've been playing it so much LOL Oh... and it spans the ages, cuz my kids all like it too (23, 17, 12). Well worth the purchase and airtime!!

i have had really good luck with finding music thru amazon until i bought ingrid michaelson's "girls and boys". i was excited on the first track to hear such a quality voice, but the songs and the lyrics throughout are, well, just stupid. my best description would be to say that each song is comprised of the random thoughts of a woman as if she was day dreaming. every song is whimsical and disjointed, without depth or thought or meaning. quite a few songs have some type of instrumentation designed to sound like some kind or background noise,(purpose unknown) which is very irritating and disturbing to listen to. i don't know what the artist was trying to do here, but i am glad i bought this one used and at a cheap price. do yourself a favor and pass this one by.

I haven't bought a CD since I was 13, and this is the first one I'm actually contemplating buying so I can own this amazing CD! :) If you have any doubts of buying it, lose them, because It's definitely worth the 10 dollars for this CD. I'm listening to it now actually!!

I'm in love with Ingrid because she looks so amazing and has a personality that I really love, and she seems to be very intelligent. Also her voice is pleasant and interesting. I'd totally marry her. So I really wanted to like this album. However, all the songs really sound the same and they're not very interesting. This album sounds like one really long song rather than a bunch of different songs. I think she really needs better songs to sing. I hope she can learn how to write better songs and make a more interesting CD next time. Also, I found it very strange that she wrote songs about dying alone and "accepting me the way I am." Excuse me? Why would someone as lovely as her die alone? Also, it would take no effort to accept her as she is. She looks awesome! Perhaps she needs to work on her self esteem.

Girls and Boys Ingrid Michaelson has a nice voice and the arrangements are pretty original. Lots of fun and very fresh but she has the restraint that many of the new singer/songwriters lack. The result is a fine new voice that is not too silly to be enjoyed by a wide range of ages.

I'm a 27 year old black man from the southside of Chicago, and I dig Ingrid's music. It's like she "gets it". Her music and lyrics are incredibly engaging without feeling depressing or bland. I listen to everyhing from Jay-Z to deadpres to System of a Down, and my favorite album this year is "Girls and Boys". I heard "The Way I Am" on the Old Navy commercial and wondered why I hadn't heard about Norah Jones' new track. But after some research, I found a new, incredible artist with a great album. I never do reviews, but I have to do this one in support of my girl Ingrid. The brothas dig your music too!

Ingrid Michaelson has an amazing voice and is also a terrific songwriter, and both qualities shine through on her first album. I bought it for the Old Navy song ("The Way I Am") but have found new favorites, especially "The Hat," "Die Alone," and "Highway." Beautiful melodies, interesting harmonies, and reflective, poignant lyrics. I was able to see her live, and she sounds just as great as she does on the album, which says a lot during these days of studio magic "artists".

It's been a very long time since I've enjoyed an album so much from the very first listen, and it holds up to constant re-plays.

The vocal qualities, the song writing, and the melodies are soothing, yet thought-provoking.

Part Paul Simon, part Joni Mitchell, part Ani DiFranco, part Jack Johnson. And large parts just Ingrid.

I am recommending this album to everyone I know, and thanking the college station that introduced me to her music.

Maybe I find myself gravitated toward music that's a little bit deifferent for the sake of being different, but Ingrid Michaelson is legitimately creative, and very clever. There's something to listen for in every song, whether it's the cool rhyme scheme in "Breakable" or the bare bones "The Way I Am" that sounds like she could perform it with a group of friends on the spot if you asked her to. It's a great album that takes some kind of active thinking to listen to, but is still listenable enough to work as background music, which I think makes its replay value very high. Buy it, you'll love it.
