"Call of Duty" series lovers will eagerly want this after finishing the other WWII fps. COD3 did let down PC users as it was only available on console but COD4 makes up for it in aces. In 2004 the next best single player shooter to "Half-Life 2" was "Call of Duty 1". COD4 is up against some of the best games out there but whatever about the fabulous single player mode, the multiplayer destroys the competition.
Needless to say COD4 brings us yet another fine sequel effort to rival anything else on the shelf. COD has firmly taken over where "Medal of Honour: Allied Assault" first got our attention in trying to recreate the "Saving Private Ryan" experience for us all. Instead of WWII though we get modern warfare and gosh it is good.
The COD series is built on the same concept as MOH except there is more action, more high-octane moments and a very different type of enemy AI. COD4 has upgraded the enemy and platoon squad AI from COD2 so that your comrades can identify the enemy and instead of scripting each action sequence as in COD1, COD4 depends on AI so that a rerun of any level will play differently although the situations remain the same. COD4 maybe has the best storyline to date although you don't pilot and drive.
COD4 retains all the cinematic intensity that its predecessor successfully claimed and even expands on each of the earlier episodes over the course of several different story arcs. You play as Marines and SAS. There are tons of very well designed missions. The smoke and explosion effects are absolutely photorealistic and have set a new benchmark for graphics quality. The environments and maps are genuinely war like all the way through and can not be faulted. The enemy AI and your own team AI are much more realistic than COD1 +2 and your team is very reliable. If you get too close to the enemy you can engage him in close quarter combat. Although Call of Duty 4 was never meant to be a war simulation, but more of a 1st person war adventure, to be honest, does exactly what it says on the tin.
COD4 is more of an experience than a game. You will turn to it time and time again, however it is worth it for the experience of the single player missions alone let alone the stunning multiplayer where you can increase in rank and earn weapons and skills.
COD4 lasts much longer than COD1+2 and OU, where COD1 had a 1.5 day game span and UO had 3, COD2 had a week this one can last longer. The pandemonium of war is all here in a spectacular fashion because the story is a winner as you play a mini version of what is happening right now in Iraq.
Like COD1+2 you even feel loss at the end but for some reason the connection to your comrades in COD1 was a lot stronger because it was more scripted. Here your friends are replaced by mission leaders and specialists. That is my only gripe with it.
Try to play it in Directx 10 (the standard for all the cutting edge new first person pc shooters) if you can. The new Geforce 8800 card handles this game well. If you don't have a very high end machine then you may want to hold off as the specs are pretty high. This war multiplayer has pretty much replaced Battlefield 2 and Counter-strike as the leader of the pack. COD has always been a contender for game of the year and COD4 is no exception.
Pros:
- Multiplayer
- Cinematic gaming
- Best new war game and a worthy 1st person shooter
- Awesome war atmosphere
Cons:
- Needs more friends and less experts in your team
- High system specs

Wow, I just finished beating the single player campaign on this game , and what a thrill ride. This game definitely deserves all the praise it has received by both critics and gamers alike.
The graphics are outstanding. On max settings this game is one of the best looking out there right now. Lots of awesome lighting, shadow, and particle effects as well as some pretty good textures. The game also has a pretty fluid frame-rate and only a little bit of pop-in but that trelies more on your computer than the game itself. This game may not be quite as forgiving as Steam powered games but it still will run smoothly on at least low settings on most newer computers, and it doesn't take all that much to max it out either. I'm running a 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo Processor With 3 GB of RAM and a 8600M GT with max settings. Yep, and if you didn't recognize what that M meant, it stands for mobile. That's right folks the game is running max on my laptop and smoothly at that.
The soundwork is astounding. All of the gun and explosion sound effects are awesome, and the guns really sound unique. The soundtrack itself is simply epic, it's what you would expect in an oscar nominated war film. The voicework is espeecially good and you really get into the characters.
This game features the classic Call of Duty game-play that we know and love, but a little more fine tuned and in a modern setting. The modern setting is a nice change, I was getting kind of tired of World War II, plus I think I can relate more to this story thanks to the state of the world we live in today, and got a little more emotionally involved. While the campaign is short, it has a ton of action and is litered with interactive cinematic sequences that are just plain awesome and make the whole thing feel truly epic. Some of the missions are amazing, my favorite is the sniper mission flashback in Chernobyl. The storyline in this game rivals Metal Gear Solid in terms of being an interactive experience rather than just a game. When you're all finished up with the single player, there's the multi player. Now, Call of Duty multi-player has always been good, but they completely revolutionized it here. It is much more deep, and much more competitive. Being able to create your own classes and choosing your advantages and disadvantages wisely is pretty darn cool. Plus now there's players ranks and little unlockables to show that you're just that much better than that other guy. You'll get your money's worth with this loaded multi-player.
This game features a stellar, cinematic single player experience and an awesome, addicting multi-player game as well. People are sure to be playing the multi-player for years. If you've been waiting for a price drop to buy this game, then yo better start asking Activision to hurry the heck up.
Excellent graphics, good replay value, too linear - Review written on July 27, 2008

I enjoyed COD4 but found it to be too linear in gameplay, and the weapons weren't customizable like those in Rainbow Six Vegas or Vegas 2. In fact, the thing that irked me the most was the lack of single fire modes for the COD4 weapons. It was always spray and pray, or aimed spray and pray. In R6 Vegas, you can at least select between single, burst, or full-auto and have the ability to suppress most of the weapons.
Regarding the plot, it is standard "bad guys get nukes, try to destroy the world" fanfare with your character saving the day. They did not disclose the exact date when Lt Price went to Russia to assassinate the arms dealer, but the fact that the enemies had suppressed FN P90's suggests it took place in 1994 at the earliest, when the weapon was first released. However, I am not sure when/if the FN P90 was available to Russian military forces at that time so I would have to assume that COD4 takes place around 5-15 years from now.
The character had limited access to vehicles, so this is definitely not the same as Battlefield 2 or Halo.
Pros: Great graphics, fun game play, lots of weapons to choose from, cool M203 / explosion effects, plenty of bad guys to take out.
Cons: Very linear/limited game play, stupid dogs can take out SAS or USMC if you don't press the MELEE attack button at the right time.
Overall: 3/5 stars, it could be better with less linear gameplay and more customizations for weapons.
Very entertaining in both single and multiplayer modes - Review written on July 21, 2008

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
In video games, I especially like First Person Shooters, and COD4 has to be considered one of the best available right now. It's graphices, sound, story and voice acting are all very, very good. It falls down in the single player game in being too short, and too scripted and linear compared to Crysis, for example, but is still challenging, varied and enjoyable. One of the features that bothers me is that if you don't advance during the course of a battle to where the designers think you ought to be, you can plan on the enemy spawning endlessly. I'd really like to see that changed in future iterationsto allow a different approach to a battle.
The multiplayer game, although it borrows the maps from the single player games, is another experience altogether. Be prepared for hundreds of servers with varied setups and maps, featuring A LOT of players, many of whom are VERY good at what they do (including my son). As a 65 year old, I can tell you that old age reaction times can be a challenge! I highly recommend this game.
One of the Best FPS Ever - Review written on July 08, 2008
Rating: 4 out of 5
As a gamer, I tend to rate the state of the video game industry by the quality of First Person Shooter games, both PC and PS II. FPS is my favorite type of video game.
With the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I feel as though the video game industry is in fine shape. This game delivers highly detailed and realistic game play with amazing graphics and extremely true to life sound.
Technically, the game seems to have few glitches, although I recommend a robust video card with good ventilation in your system. The state of the art graphics are demanding on your video card. I've also found that the game is stable as long as the default "optimal" settings are used in your profile in the game setup. For example, the default "optimal" settings option sets the video display at 800x600 with a refresh rate of 60 Mhz. When I tried to adjust the display settings to match my 1280x1024 monitor I experienced crashes during game play. However, when set to the default "optimal" setting, the game is stable, and the aspect ratio appears fine on my larger monitor.
Those issues aside, this is a great, fun game, with just the right pacing and level of difficulty through a variety of modern combat scenarios. Although the game does not have full "save at any point capability, the spontaneous healing capability from enemy fire eliminates the annoying need to constantly pick up health packs. This goes a long way toward balancing the lack of save progress control.
Lastly, this game does have a limited number of levels, and I am awaiting the new release of Call of Duty: World at War. I wish though, that Activision would release an expansion pack for this game instead of a whole new game. While they have published a few new maps for the online/multi player version recently, this is not really a full expansion, so the game remains relatively short at four levels. In the final analysis though, the quality of play and amazing graphics in this game make this one of the best video games to date, and I highly recommend.
Thanks,
Allen
Superb, but needs to be more challenging & longer - Review written on June 25, 2008

Basically, COD4 is a very fine game and a superb cinematic experience. It's like being in a modern war movie. I finished the game on the 2nd highest level of difficulty (hardened?). The majority of the game was pretty easy to get through. There were two places in the game that were extremely challenging, and those were much more rewarding to complete. This game could've used a lot more challenging missions. I wouldn't say it's a short game, but I'd say it's a medium length game. It took me a few days to finish. I still think that Halo 1 is a better game than COD4, mainly because the gameplay is deeper, more sophisticated, and challenging. When you play Halo in legendary mode, you constantly have to come up with tactical strategies for successfully getting through areas. Whereas when I played COD4, you never needed any strategy except for the two very challenging battles in COD4 (ferris wheel & launch control). The Halo series of games are the best selling ones for a good reason. They are the most in-depth, fun, and challenging in terms of gameplay. Halo also has better interaction with your fellow soldiers and your enemies. You feel like they are real people. Characters in Halo are always making comments & chatter relevant to whatever is going on in a particular situation. That makes it a lot more immersive and fun. There's not so much interaction in COD4. COD4 is mostly like a shooting gallery. You just shoot whatever pops up. The characters in COD4 talk only for the sake of advancing the story, where as the friends & foes in Halo talk all the time, which makes it more interactive and engaging. That's one of my favorite things about Halo. So while COD4 is superb as far as it goes, they should take this game and develop it a bit farther. They should add more in-depth gameplay, more sophisticated combat, more interactivity between characters, and a longer and deeper story. I think they should work on adding those things to the next COD game instead of making a new graphics engine. The graphics are fine as they are.
I want to add that before COD4 came out, I was wishing for a game where you could fight against muslims. After 9/11 and all the crap that has happened since then, plus all the decades of never-ending terrorism, plus the future threat of nuclear bombs from muslims, I am really sick and tired of them and I think the gaming world is crying out for a really good, in-depth, satisfying game where you can get your revenge on them. I thought it was great that you do get to fight against muslims in COD4, but I don't think it was enough. You still fight Russians in the majority of the game. It's like it's only politically correct to fight white people in games. It seems like all the game developers are chickening out of making a good game where you fight mainly muslims. We also still don't have any good games where you fight in World War II against the japanese, or in the Viet Nam war, or the Korean war. I guess they're also too chicken too make games where you fight asians. This is ridiculous. They are missing out on many big money-making opportunities here! I think that stinks! I want to see a complete spectrum of first rate FPS war games where you get to fight all the major wars in all the major theaters, regardless of the ethnicity of the enemies.

I am a gamer but I have a narrow preference for the type of games I play, mainly Star Trek and MOHAA and COD4 LOL. I thought there was a problem with my new 8800 GS video card because I couldn't stay up with the other players in online play. But I realized that my eye and hand coordination had to catch up with the graphics of this game, and when they did, after playing for several hours, I felt great when I had a triple scoring spree and was promoted to corporal :-) This game delivers what all games should, challenge, outstanding graphics, and a sense of truth, in the case of war games, that in real life people do die for freedom. and we have many heros both sung and unsung--Wow!

By no means is Call of Duty 4 a bad game, but there are large numbers of small and medium things that can ruin the experience.
Call of Duty 4's feel of realism is quickly lost when you first notice that the helicopters used to ferry in the copious number of enemies are invincible- in several plot related sections you are forced to shoot them down with RPGs, but outside of those areas, they take no damage from being shot with high powered weapons.
The same is true with certain enemies in other sequences- in particular, there is a section of the game where you ride on the back of a truck and shoot other trucks full of enemies, but the truck and the driver are both invulnerable, ruining the sequence for someone who is used to GTA San Andreas' style of being able to shoot drivers, as well as the wheels of their cars.
Another complaint is the number of enemies that will infinitely spawn until you force your way forwards- your teammates will be happy to sit in one place, killing a single enemy every couple minutes, while they pour out of the woodwork until you step past a specific point, or go to the point that they are spawning at. The game relies entirely on just spamming an infinite number of enemies at you until you force your way through.
Which brings up the Team AI- there essentially is none. Your people will sit in one place forever until you move forward, killing about 1 in the time period it takes 5 to spawn. AI allies are completely useless, and you instantly fail if you accidentally shoot anyone related to the plot.
The last real issue is that there are some guns that are essentially useless- in particular the belt-fed machine guns, which take more time to reload than it takes to root around for another one to pick up.
To this day I have not been able to get multiplayer functioning due to the finicky Punkbuster anti-cheating system, which has a habit of kicking you from a game at the drop of a hat, and can cause serious issues with your computer.
All in all, despite it's flaws, Call of Duty 4 is a fun game- there is a fairly realistic sniper mission where you creep around in a ghillie suit, the graphics are quite good, and you can feel yourself getting attached to some of other members of your team. It certainly isn't the second coming, but it's a good game if you have nothing else to play.
Great game - get it now - Review written on May 14, 2008

Some games are guaranteed to be great. At one point, I believed this about anything with the Tom Clancy logo on it, until Ubisoft bought that franchise and turned them into arcade shooters wit ridiculous graphic requirements. Call of Duty however is a pc franchise which delivers and remembers what makes this kind of game fun in the first place - brutal, immersive combat, realistic graphics, explosive sound effects and an interesting storyline.
The last COD for the pc was the brilliant COD 2 in 2005. COD 2 changed the rules somewhat from its predecessor, as it had no health kits and limited saves. COD 4 follows this pattern but deviates from the previous games in one very important way - you are now a modern soldier of the US Marine Corps or British SAS instead of a World War 2 infantry grunt. Obviously, returning to the modern day gives you many more weapons options which did not exist in the 1940s, such as rpgs and AK47s. You even get, a few times, the Javelin, a great anti-tank weapon.
COD 4 switches back and forth, at least early on, between the perspective of a US Marine (whose platoon is trying to find an atomic bomb) and a British SAS operative (whose team is tracking down those who financed and arranged the bomb delivery). In one important deviation, your character flashes back to the early 90s on a covert assassination mission in Chernobyl, shortly after the nuclear meltdown there.
The gameplay is pretty tight, and there are few dull or slow moments. COD is all all business shooter, and you won't waste a lot of time looking for keys or solving puzzles. The one stealth mission is engrossing and very well presented.
One important contribution which the COD series has made to the shooter genre is the concept of swapping weapons. In the COD series, you can carry just two weapons at any time (not counting grenades of course), but you can swap any of these weapons for those which you find from friend or foe along the way. This makes for interesting gameplay. You might want to grab say a powerul machine gun to hose down a lot of enemies at once, or you can find a sniper rifle and pick them off from a distance. Or you can find an RPG and blast the whole lot of them. COD usually allows you a few different paths through the most difficult sections but they take time to figure out.
There are a some annoying logjams. In a few tough places, enemies will respawn endlessly until you reach a certain invisible checkpoint after which they will quickly all run away or refuse to follow. In one such area, I kept sitting there picking off enemies until I was almost out of ammo, at which point I realized that I had to move. But, this feature also keeps you moving forward. You cannot camp out in the game, ever.
I guess my favorite level of the game was the stealth mission in Chernobyl. You are a young SAS sniper in a ghillie suit, avoiding Russian soldiers on the way to snipe a rogue arms dealer who is sellling a stolen nuclear device. Your commander is with you to give you advice. The end of the mission is a fantastic set piece battle in an abandoned amusement park. Another great mission lets you call in airstrikes as you and your men race to the extraction zone after a failed mission later in the game.
This is a game which alls shooter fans will love. I recommend it highly.
