A more polished sound and a gret effort put out by Enrique! - Review written on February 20, 2008

I have all of Enrique Iglesias' Spanish and English-language albums and I can definitely say that this one is the most polished and most diverse to date. It's not my favorite album of his, but I thought it was an excellent effort and I listen to it every few days because I do like about 80% of the songs.
Some standouts for me are: 'Ring My Bells' because of the sound and the mysterious mood of the song, 'Do you know/dimelo' because it's just one of those songs that you just start singing along with when it comes on, 'Somebody's Me' because I always love a good ballad and I could relate to the song, 'Tired of being sorry' because of the sophistication of the lyrics, 'Sweet Isabel' because eventhough he claims that it's not about his mother, Isabel Preysler, the song sounds like it could be like her and it's a sweet song, and 'Push' because of it's urban/hip-hop influence. 'Push' is also on the Step Up 2 movie soundtrack.
With some other songs, Enrique mixes in a little reggaeton flavor and even a little middle eastern sound with 'Miss You' and 'On Top of You'. 'Little Girl' is my least favorite because it's just not that exciting.
What I truly admire is that his sound does have subtle differences from album to album and he is definitley not afraid of taking risks musically. I truly thought this was a great album and worth my money!

It's been a long time since 1999, because that's when Enrique Iglesias was on top of the world with hits like "Bailamos", "Rhythm Divine" and "Be With You". Even so, it still seemed like he couldn't match the overall popularity of other singers in his vein like Marc Anthony. But I'm thinking he might have to throw in the towel after hearing his latest album.
It's ironic that this album is called Insomniac because actually, it'll pretty much put you to sleep. There are a lot of dull songs, like "Miss You", "Somebody's Me" and "Wish I Was Your Lover". And "Tired of Being Sorry" is hard to relate to because it has Enrique not wanting to apologize for continually breaking his girl's heart, and if he doesn't want to do that, well...STOP BREAKING HER HEART!!!
Things also fail with the obligatory urban crossover "Push" (featuring Lil' Wayne -- didn't Enrique learn anything from Ricky Martin's "I Don't Care"?); and the necessary song with a message, "Little Girl", neither helps nor hurts the album. And as is the case with most Spanglish albums, the end of the album unnecessarily features Spanish version of earlier songs on the album ("Do You Know", "Somebody's Me" and "Tired of Being Sorry"). If Insomniac is all Enrique has left to offer for American audiences, maybe he should go back to making Spanish-language albums.

Unlistenable for rock fans - Review written on January 01, 2008

I got this as a gift by chance - otherwise I wouldn't deem to listen to this sort of music. But after all I did. For me, a rock fan, it was nearly unlistenable (I went thru it to the end just from the respect I had for the donor). Boring, boring, from the start to the end. I cannot understand the success that Enrique could achieve. Musically, nothing new, untouched with rock history and with current modern trends in music (the effort to rap in one of the tracks is just worth a smile). Commercial bubble gum music for female teens, only pretending emotion while being emotionless. Enrique's vocal is ordinaire, somewhat worn down and weepy. I see the only advantage of Enrique - the handsome face on the cover photo. If you are a principally a rock fan, don't waste your time with this stuff like I did.

Pretty good album. Anyone who likes this should check out a compilation series on iTunes called "Euro Club Hits" ... (there's a vol. 1, vol. 2, vol. 3, etc. etc.)...... So much of current club music in the USA is based in the stuff coming out of Europe, and yet nobody seems to know of it and the radio doesn't play it here! So I'm taking it as my personal mission to introduce everyone to it as best I can ...... "Euro Club Hits" -- it's only on the digital services for some reason -- iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Emusic, etc. etc.

MMM...MMM.MMM...and ooh la lah. What a romantic, perfect specimen of a man! Oh, yes, the album review.....I can't believe this album is getting such lukewarm reviews but I give it one awesome review! I have only heard one or two songs from Enrique in the past and that may be a good thing because I don't have any pre-conceived ideas of what I think this new album SHOULD sound like. This guy sings with so much feeling I almost melt. His lyrics are so impassioned and poignant, I wish I could bottle it and sprinkle it on the next man I meet. Fav is Somebody's Me, so heartfelt, so sad, so me. In reading his liner notes, I was very saddened for him. Insomnia is a torturous affliction and it sounds like he went through hell and I have to hand it to him for sharing that with his fans. I, for one, give this album 5 stars and hope he continues to write and sing and make 100 more albums.
A Great New Album By Enrique - Review written on June 27, 2007

I guess some people are feeling lukewarm about Enrique's newest album but honestly I am really enjoying it. I have loved all of Enrique's albums and I do not feel disappointed at all with Insomniac.
There are a lot of hits on here. Ring My Bells, Push (which I hear is going to be his next single), Somebody's Me, Wish I Was Your Lover, Stay Here Tonight, On Top of You, Sweet Isabel, Little Girl- well I am just naming off all the songs aren't I?
The only songs that I feel lack the same power as the rest would be Miss You and Don't You Forget About Me. They're not bad songs at all- but they probably will take a bit longer to grow on me.
Overall, regardless of how well this album turns out, I think it is a success. Enrique knows what works for him in music and keeps at it while changing it up a bit (like with Push) but overall is the same Enrique all hardcore fans of his like I love, love, love.

Moody, Dark, and Almost Perfect - Review written on June 18, 2007

The opening track of "Insomniac" drops us into the good stuff right away. "Ring my Bells" is a masterpiece, a fusion of the holy and the carnal. It sounds like something that could be sung in a monastery. Its deep vocals and dense, obsessive rhythms are exhilarating introduction to the album's theme of desire.
There's much on Insomniac that absorbs. Iglesias likes ear candy -- a good thing for listeners who like ear candy. "Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)" features the daring and intricate use of a bouncing ping-pong ball. "On Top of You" is a more dancy "Ring My Bells," sans innuendo. "Tired of Being Sorry" mentions vampires and has an ambiance of desolate, decadent L.A. nights.
Listening to the album for the first time is a slightly jarring experience, because the sound of one song doesn't suggest the sound of another. The rhythms on "Push," for instance, don't hint at "Do You Know." But gradually, we're clued in to theme and rhythmic unification; we see what Iglesias is driving at; we're into the groove. The album has intriguing similarities to numerous other albums, including Bryan Ferry's "Bete Noir," Dido's "Life for Rent," and the Pet Shop Boys' "Nightlife." "Insomniac" an appropriate title for this shadowy, nighttime music.
Unfortunately, the last third of the album is a let-down. The darkness and stark yearning of the songs that precede it only make "Little Girl" look shallower and more boring and mawkish than it already is. "Stay Here Tonight" is a likeable workhorse of a track, but an odd follow-up to "Little Girl." "Sweet Isabelle" further adds to the trouble. A blasé, 1970s-sounding number, it comes out of left field, and the only thing you can think of when hearing it is, "Who let the B-side in?"
But the biggest disappointment is that Iglesias ends the album with the interminable "Don't Forget About Me." The last song on this album should have been a dance number, or maybe something that returned us to the sound of "Ring my Bells;" something, anyway, more upbeat. All this moodiness, and we can't even work things out in a club, or maybe go a bit Bjork? If Iglesias and producer Mark Taylor wouldn't give this song a groove--despite the fact that Iglesias' vocals beg for one-- they should have shipped it off to someone who would. Giorgio Moroder could have worked wonders with it.
At the end of the day, you'll want to stick with the first eight songs on the album and then skip ahead to the tenth. Those are the numbers that make waking hours worthwhile.

Enrique Iglesias is really in a bad boat. Because, it seems like in this era, if you are trying to set off a Latin explosion and your name isn't Shakira, it's going to flop. Look at Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony (I didn't put those last two together on purpose), none of those people have had any recent hits. And if you look through charts, Enrique hasn't really had a big smash in a good long time. So, as expected here, he tries really, really hard to impress you, by going off on different genres and different styles. And, like anyone else going completely out of his or her comfort zone, it really fails. One forgettable thing is Enrique Iglesias's very sad attempts to appeal to the hip-hop group. Songs like "On Top of You" and "Push" (latter featuring Lil' Wayne) are dead-drop forgettable tries at another scene. But, aside from that, Insomniac provides a solid, poppy and fun listen, regardless that the disc might feel a little dated (it ain't summer 2002 anymore), and you may have one or two blander songs to deal with. Enrique Iglesias should stick to what he does best: ballads; and that shows in "Somebody's Me", the acoustic "Don't You Forget About Me", and radio-friendly "Little Girl", and dancehall vibes, like "Tired of Being Sorry", or the best of both worlds, "Wish I Was Your Lover". And the two pop-rock songs "Stay Here Tonight" and "Sweet Isabel" are above passable. And like any other Enrique album, we are treated with three Spanish songs, all of which are already on the album in English, these are "Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)", "Somebody's Me", and "Tired of Being Sorry". Enrique should try sticking to his roots for his next album, but Insomniac is still a very solid, contained, and fun listen. 3.5 stars.

Trust me. if there's one Album that will keep you up all night, It's this one. Up all night doing what you ask. I don't know. Partying? Getting it on? - Yes. Really the album is that sexy. Though not as lively as his other records, Enrique delivers some great music here. There aren't any weak songs, though i feel the album slumps a little in the last quarter, but even them songs are pretty good. The album is a melting pot of all different types of music. There's some Groove, some Reggatton. A little bit of Pop, Rock and even some R'n'B, and all the while still sounding sexy. This is definetly his most sexy record. I mean just listen to "Ring My Bells". Go on. Press the sample clip. You know you want to.
Enrique was certainly experimenting with different sounds here, and the results seem to have paid off.
First up is "Ring My Bells". A Groovy little tune, that was used in the Tommy Hilfiger commercial for True Star Men Aftershave. When I heard the clip from the song in the commercial i just knew id love it. It has this unmistakeable Commercialism to it. I wasn't sure just how much i'd love it though. But on hearing the song in full, I can say it did not dissapoint.
The song reminds me of being in a Forest at Night time. With the thud of it's base line , the beat and animal wailing, this song is sexy as the Night itself. There are even Whale sounds in the song. YES!!!! Thats Right. Whales 4 cryin' out loud. Who thought of that ? but who cares anyway. It's a sexy little Groove number and sets the Album off to a Terrific start.
This song isn't very upbeat, but it doesn't try to be. It's just Sexy, and one of the best Groove songs I've heard. Wanna get it on with someone - PLAY THIS SONG.
Next up is "Push" a hip hop flavoured tune, that features rapper Lil' Wayne. This song is just as good as the first but with a touch of reggatoen.
Enrique hadn't really done anything like this before, and as I heard it i thought. Oh no. He's trying to buy into the rap movement...but as it turns out. It's pretty good. The Base Line is awesome, and i love the little spanish guitars dotted throughout the song. Just as smoove as ever, this song is great, and one of the Album's best. Whatever this song is it's Addictive.
"Do You Know" is the third track. The Albums First single, is one of the catchiest songs on the album. no doubt. Though the spanish version "Diemilo" is better, this song is just great. It has a great chorus, and is sure to get stuck in your head for days. And that's not a bad thing. I'd never heard anything like this before, but it's kind of like Escape. Just more POP than rock, this time. He also gives a good Vocal performance. Can't get this song out of my head. It's great, though i would question why it was the Album's First single, but a single it deserves to be. No Less.
The Albums fourth track is it's first ballad, and is called "Somebody's Me". It opens with crisp acoustic guitars. Enrique first preformed it on Extreme Makeover - Home Edition. It's a beautiful song. It's kind of like a lesser version of Hero. But still beautiful in every way. It's one of his best ballads, and talks about longing for someone, and how you hope they will find out how you feel about them. Like a secret love. The bridge is one of my favourite parts of the song, but the whole song is great. Enrique never fails to deliver.
Next up are the sexy R'n'B sounds of "On Top Of You". this song, while even though slower, reminds me of some of his previous tunes from Escape. Very catchy, and kind of has a shuffling beat to it.
No doubt one of my favourite tracks from the Album. It's sexy but very Beautiful at the same time. He gives a good vocal performance, and I can honestly say, it's one of the best songs of his career. One of my all time favourit Enrique songs. Only one word for it. AWESOME.
Up next is a remake of Ringside's "Tired Of Being Sorry". Id never heard the original, but this version is pretty good, and delivers a slice of rock into the album. I like the synthesisers, and beat of the music. Good lyrics too. Not one of my favourites from the album, but a good song none the less. I like the chorus, and the bridge. Enrique adds some spanish guitars, to give it a kind of latin rock feel.
"Miss You" is one of the albums better tracks. It's similar to "Push" and "Ring My Bell" but a bit more lively. It sounds VERY Reggaetton, and is a new sound for Enrique. Definetly one of my faves from Insonmiac, and i hope it will be a single. I Love the verses and words to the song. Then the chorus comes on and i'm addicted. Love the alarm sounds too.
"Whish I Was Your Lover" is the BEST song on the Album, right next to RMB. This should definetly be a single. The song is Sounding very R'N'B.
One of my Absolute fave Enrique songs. The Bridge is the best part, and i love his vocals. The chorus gets you PUMMPED. It's smooth, but upbeat at the same time. This is THE song that reminds me of his "Escape" Era. If you love Escape you'll probably love this song. it's similar to his older songs like "Love 4 Fun" & "If The World Crashes Down". Love the words. Love the beat. Love the Tune. Love everything about this song.
"Little Girl" is another one of the album's ballads. It is one of the sweetest songs he's ever recorded. Sounds very beautiful. This is probably THE Enrique song that touches me the most. Not hero, or Maybe. It's this one. I think he write it about Anna. But who knows?. Anyway it's downright beautiful. "She cries in the night. But no one can hear her. She's all alone. This little girl closes here eyes. All that she want's is someone to love her". These are the most beautiful lyrics anyone could write, or hope to hear.
Up next is the Alternate Rocker "Stay Here Tonight". The song is no doubt catchy and fun, but it does sound like a left over from 2003's "7". It's not a great song. But it is good. The chorus is the best part. Good verses too. Even a good bridge. Don't over look this song.
"Sweet Isabell" is a bit different from anything he'd ever done before, and sounds quite similar to the previous track, but it's better. It will probably grow on me, and become one of my favourites. I love the acoustic guitar, and the way the song opens. It's a sweet song, and I like the way it adresses a person by name. I Love the chorus. It's a pretty simple song. Very Alternative. Alls i can say bout this song is...ROCK ON.
The Albums last track is another ballad. "Don't Forget About Me". It's a sweet song, and will no doubt be a fave with many people, but i don't think it's anything special. Good message & a pretty song. It's similar to "Somebody's Me". It's one of the Album's best ballads, and a good way to end an already good Album. How could we forget about him with such a great Album ?
The last 3 tracks are Spanish versions of "Do You Know", "Somebody's me"
and "Tired Of Being Sorry".
Overall even though INSOMNIAC still doesnt match up to the greatness of 1999's "ENRIQUE" or 2001's "ESCAPE" it is a little bit better than "7" ( which was a good album ). It definetly has the potential to be a commercial success to the extent of "Escape". So stay up late and play the album. Enrique did not dissapoint with this Music. Even though it took 4 Years of waiting for a New Enrique Album. I can honestly say the wait was WORTH IT!!!!!!

I think at first listen I thought, huh, this is different. Not a typical Enrique album. I loved his album, 7. And I wondered why it sold so little in U.S.A. I think this new album is a change but a change in the right direction. I was not sure how much I liked this album until I noticed how much I've been singing part of Ring My Bells. I loved Do You Know the first time I heard it. Tired of Being Sorry is great, too. Somebody's Me is great, very touching. These songs grow on you once you give them a chance, read the lyrics, make you feel like it's late at night and your experiencing something very personal. Which is what I believed Enrique intended. Thank you Enrique for being so honest and personal.
Insomniac? Sleepy, more like... - Review written on June 12, 2007

"Insomniac" is everything we've come to expect from Enrique Iglesias; ordinary pop songs about love. However, unlike the album's title, most of the songs are unlikely to keep one awake.
Much of the album comprises songs which seem to be inspired by George Michael's "Hand to mouth", sung in that heart broken voice Enrique seems to be stuck with, a very good example being "Ring my bell".
Lead off single "Do you know (the ping pong song)" is a desperately ordinary song made a bit different by the ping pong ball effects. It sounds much better in its Spanish version "Dimelo", almost like a different song thanks to his fervent delivery in Spanish. "Push" is a rather tepid mid tempo number featuring the obligatory rap (or you won't get any airplay in the US) by Lil Wayne.
All's not lost though. Three songs really stand out. The more upbeat, guitar drenched dreamy sounding "Tired of being sorry" is lovely (similar to "Love to see you cry" from "Escape"), and is featured again in a Spanish version. "Miss you" is a horn sprinkled flamenco-like dance number which gets you moving, while the acoustic ballad "Don't you forget about me" (featuring a yearning vocal delivery) is superb.
"Sweet Isabel" is rockier and edgier than most of the other stuff. "Little girl" is a ballad about a girl who found fame and fortune but nobody to love, while the uptempo pulsing synth of "Stay here tonight" is remniscent of The Police's "Every breath you take".
I really wish Enrique would take the risk and push the envelope musically. As it is, "Insomniac" is just adequate.
Your Favorite Latin Lover Is Back - Review written on June 12, 2007

Just like his Father Julio, Enrique Iglesias emerged as a Latin lover, but a few decades later in the late 90's were Latin music finally was getting the recognition it deserved and also getting alot of airplay. Enrique combined seductive ballads with Latin insipred uptempos and the result was great success. On his first English album from 1999 he had a smash hit with both the uptempo "Bailamos" that reached #1 position on the billboard charts and with "Be With You" a ballad also reaching #1. simultaneously, several other Latin artists like Shakira, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony had also had hits with simular concept, Latin inflenced pop songs in English that is. However, Enrique proved he was no fluke and stuck around with another great album in "Escape" and scored with the wonderful ballad "Hero" that reached #4, the album ultimately sold 9 million copies and Enrique was on top of his game, perhaps the most popular Latin singer to crossover. "7" his third album from 2003, was alright but lacked major hits. The only hit was "Addicted" reached a decent #19 place but I doubt alot of people recalls it?. 4 years have gone by now and Enrique has been outisde of the spotlight concentrating on other activities and his girlfriend Ex-Tennisplayer Anna Kounikova. A few months ago I heard rumours about a new very anticipated 4th English album titled "Insomniac" and I was quite suprised cause I hadn't been thinking of Enrique in ages and wasn't sure he'd be coming back at all. It seems like he had completely lost his interest for music. Before listening to this album I had 2 major questions that I wanted an answer to. Would he sound like usual? and Would there be enoguh potential hit singles for his old fans to still bother?. Read on to find out.
Enrique Iglesias's 4th English album and first new album in 4 years feauture production from Stargate, Sean Garrett and, John Shanks and several Swedes in Kristian Lundin, Rami & Anders Bagge just aswell as Mark Taylor who wrote "Hero". The album seems to have something for everyone and in some of the occasions it works just fine while in others it doesn't. Not that many Latin inspired uptempos this time, but many ballads and midtempos. It starts with "Ring My Bells" a decent midtempo with great verse and production, but the killer hook never arrives and that's a shame, However this is a grower. A dirty Hip Hopish club song called "Push" with Lil Wayne is a major surprise on an Enrique album, this feels like a misstep though and I could do without. The first single "Do You Know (Ping Pong Song) was produced by Sean Garrett and it's the absolute standout here. It feauture beats resembling a ping pong ball and, great melody and a hook that is so good it's irressistble. Not surprisingly this is already a hit. "Somebody's Me" is a midtempo with a basic guitar riff, it's passable. Stargate produced "On Top of You" is another straight forward song but it isn't Hip Hopish this time. It uses some very catchy sirens and and is alright but need a few listens too. "Tired Of Being Sorry" is a midtempo with spanish guitar riffs, decent pop but can't say we haven't heard it before.
"Miss You" offfers more of the same, only that it's more oriental inspired with it's rhythm. "Wish I Was You Lover" is a standout though, it's a midtempo/uptempo with great beats and hook and hopefully a upcoming single. "Little Girl" is a sugar sweet ballad with basic guitar riffs that kind of resembles The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes". It seems to deal with a little girl without someone to love that is all alone. "Stay Here Tonight" is more decent middle of the road pop but "Sweet Isabel" is a great rock inspired midtempo that is abit diffrent from the rest and also got the hit potential. "Don't You Forget About Me" is the last song in English and it's quite dull, right after there are 3 Spanish versions of other album songs.
Overall, Enrique offers an alright album with decent variety and a few standouts. "Do You Know" is really good and so are 2-3 other songs aswell, But there is also alot of half decent and mediocre material here aswell. At times it sounds like Enrique is going through the motions and he just gives you pop songs without much passion or personality. I wouldn't mind more uptempos cause there are few of them and they would defenitely improve the overall quality here. On the other hand there are few really bad songs included either. Having said that, this album is decent but not better then his first 2 that were really good. I think some of his older fans may still enjoy this but unlikely that new fans will arrive. "Insomniac" gets 3 stars without being too special
