I never got to try this product because during shipping the flask was broken, twice. Bistro Double-Wall 30-Ounce Pour-Over Drip Coffee Maker with Gold Filter

It works pretty well. The included filter lets finer grounds through, so you either have to use a rougher grind or paper filter. It's surprisingly light and easy to clean. I've cleaned it in a dishwasher about a dozen times already and it seems to be perfectly okay with that.
It's faster, cheaper and cleaner than a coffee machine and the results are better too.
The only complaint I have is that it's a little hard to pour from, at least when you've just woken up and haven't had your coffee yet.

Not only is this coffee maker a pleasure to look at, it makes a fine cup of joseph to boot. Not quite as good as a french press, but miles better than a drip coffee maker, the brew comes out full flavored and aromatic. By having direct control over the temperature of the water one can tweak the process in ways that are impossible with other coffee makers. If you want to get away from a drip brewer and don't care for the grittiness that can come with pressed coffee, this is a great option.

Its a beautiful product but the first time I put it in the dishwasher it shattered. There were no instructions to the contrary and I had written to the manufacturer asking if it was dishwasher safe but received no answer to my inquiry. Presently I am just using a typical insulated carafe and #4 paper filter and funnel to brew my coffee. It works fine but would be nice to be able to see how much water is filling the carafe instead of having to lift the funnel.

I like this on many levels. I, too, received a broken one. Amazon replaced it (no charge) the same day! WOW!! I believe Amazon sent it (the first one) BROKEN and probably bought it BROKEN, too. Both were packed well. It looks good.

I have used this everyday for about 8 weeks and it is doing just fine. I've never preheated the coffee pot, either. I don't get that. In fact, I don't get the "double pot" either. For insulation? Huh.

Furthermore, the gold filter doesn't get enough love. It is good and should last. The funnel thing (the filter sits in) is plastic.

My way of making a great cup of coffee, you ask? Grind your favorite beans while you are boiling 30 oz of water in a pot. Pour the coffee INTO the water and stir for 10 - 15 seconds. Then pour the pot of coffee into your bodum coffee maker (or any other make) thru the gold filter. If you want it real clear you will need a paper filter (Chemex is best). This is essentially the French press method but easier to clean.

This was a good choice for me and Amazon deserves credit for standing up.

I was really looking forward to trying this set up for making coffee. I have a Chemex which uses paper filters so I like the idea of the gold filter. I also think the idea of having the double wall construction is a great for keeping the coffee warm. Alas, I have to give it a one star because it arrived with the inside chamber completely shattered! But I give Amazon 5 stars for ease of returning the item and refunding the price. If the fragility cam be addressed then I see this as an ideal coffee setup.

Luckily my Bistro arrived intact, we admired its beauty, but agreed on it's fragileness. As soon as I saw the upper paper thin glass funnel, I told my husband I would break it the first time I used it. The writing was on the wall from that moment. For the first week we handled it with utmost care, we babied it, we nurtured it, we handwashed it. Oh, how I scolded my husband when he put it in our stainless dish rack to dry. "Are you crazy?" I asked him. If a teacup fell on it, it would break. Then on the seventh day in the slightest of rush, I tapped it on a bowl in the sink while hand washing it, and it shattered. Although I knew it was meant to be, I did not expect the day to come so soon. But, I had an idea...Bodum must have known about this fragility... this weakness in their product. I knew I couldn't be alone with my problem. I went to the website searching for a replacement glass funnel. I phoned. I emailed.

I was informed.... that....

BODUM. DOES. NOT. MAKE. A. REPLACEMENT. FUNNEL. I was stunned and depressed. Money thrown to the wind... I decided to make a terrarium out of the carafe. P.S. Could the woman with 2 funnels and 2 broken carafes please contact me?

Do not waste your money here.

not only did I get mine for $19.99 but I've had it for over a month with no problems at all - I love it. It makes an awesome "pot" of coffee and looks cool too. I prefer to use a relatively fine grind and while I can deal with the bit of sludge in the bottom of the cup, I'd prefer not. Just bought some #4 unbleached paper filters and problem solved - but make sure you put the paper filter inside the gold filter when you do it. My first attempt without the gold filter in place blew the paper filter right out the bottom into the carafe. The "double" filter also slows down the drip brew time a bit which is a good thing - more flavor.

Two more broken ones sent my way - first from my original order, second as the replacement. Carafe appears to be extremely fragile.

Seems that people get broken ones. Mine was shipped in same box as 12 lbs of rice, and not very well cushioned, so I opened the box expecting shards. But it seemed well cushioned within the Bodum box, and was in one piece. Have used it everyday for a month, and love how it looks and how it holds the coffee hot for an hour or two (if you prewarm it with hot water out of tap). The silicone bottom cushion and grip at top are nice touches. As a person who bothers to home roast and grind the beans by hand, I have to say that the filter won't hold the water long enough to get a good brew. I put the grinds into 205 degree filtered water in a Bodum stainless steel double-walled pitcher for 4 minutes, stirring a few times, and then pour into this Bistro coffee maker. That's now my favorite way to brew coffee, and I have tried many. Two last notes, I got it from Amazon at a 4th of the listed retail price. I guess it was some kind of sale. And it goes nicely with the Bodum double wall glasses, which I 've used every day for about a year.

I got one shattered coffee maker in the mail, asked for a replacement, and then was sent another shattered coffee maker. The packing job done by Amazon was grossly inadequate (and dare I say inept), even though I explained in detail what happened to the first package. I would not recommend anyone buy this product and have it delivered. It is a fragile design and Amazon cannot ship it safely.

This may be a wonderful product but I have no information about that. Mine arrived late, and as others have described in their experiences, was totally shattered inside the box. I opened the package just enough to take some pictures but will not remove it from the box because I'm not in favor of lacerations and bleeding. Customer Service asked that I return this but I will not ship it because that's just simply stupid. All I need is to have Homeland Security track me down for knowingly shipping broken shards of glass through the postal service. Tape or no tape on the box, this is no longer a carafe, but is now a mess of very sharp bits of glass which are too dangerous to send. Bad enough it arrived in this condition, ridiculous to ship it again. Amazon is sending a replacement but I'm not holding my breath on being able to use a Bistro Double-Wall 30-Ounce Pour-Over Drip Coffee Maker with Gold Filter. May still be using my trusty Chemex.
UPDATE: Second one just arrived DOA. Can't even recycle this shattered glass!
Poor packaging and product design - Review written on January 25, 2008

Unfortunately, I suffered a similar experience - the carafe was broken in shards upon arrival, though only the interior was actually broken.

Judging from other user reviews and my own experience, I can only speculate that the problem lies not so much in the packaging (though it is woefully inadequate for something so delicate), but rather in the design of the product itself. Clearly the glass is too thin or brittle to survive the wear and tear of transit, let alone daily use in a kitchen.

Same experience as buffalowoman. Received one broken, and then the replacement, broken. Both shipped with cushioning on only two sides. Particularly galling was this fact: I noted that the problem was poor packing when I requested both replacements. No matter. I received email from a customer service rep telling me that they assumed the first item was received defective by them from the manufacturer but that, with this second defective item, "it appears that the problem is more widespread". The rep went on to explain that they are unable to physically check the item before shipping it to me.

I wrote back and said that I was not and did not claim that the item was damaged before it was shipped, and I certainly didn't expect Amazon to inspect my item before shipping it to me. Just pack this delicate item properly! Well, they're not interested apparently. The last rep I communicated with claimed "our system do not allow us to create a replacement for the second time". However, he graciously added that I may wish to place a new order for the desired item. At the new price, of course, which is three times what I paid.

Sent the first one to me......arrived in shards. Sent the second one.....also in shards. Both were sent UPS, but packed box inside a box, but with only padding around inner box on one side! This is America, and there should be a way they can ship this to a customer in one piece!!!!! Instead, Amazon refunded my money, so now I have 2 filters, and NO CARAFE!

I purchased the bodum double walled drip coffee maker and used it for a couple weeks. I loved the look of it, the feel of it and it made great coffee but the outside wall cracked straight across the bottem for no apparent reason. It was set on a cold stove top and the protective bumper was in place. The vessel had been preheated with warm water, I poured the hot water into it and a minite or so later. . . the outside wall cracked. Very dissapointing. Now what do I do?

I can't recommend this. As much as I love Bodum's designs, the glass carafe on this coffee maker shattered the first time I used it. I made a pot of coffee, poured myself a cup, turned away and heard a 'pop.' The thin glass at the bottom of the carafe had shattered - I can only assume because of temperature as there was no impact.

The pour over drip coffee maker is the simplest and least expensive way of making a great cup of coffee. For everyday use I use a Melita pour over unit I bought at the supermarket for $12.00 (I also only use Melita paper filters with it)
I use the Bistro when there is company but that's for looks the coffee is no better.
The gold filter requires a coarser grind of coffee than a paper filter and you may wind up with a little residue in the bottom of your cup but not as much as you do with a French press.
I always use freshly ground coffee no matter what method of coffee making I am using. I usually pour hot water through the filter and into the carafe to preheat it before making coffee in a pour over drip unit

I purchase a lot from Amazon.com, but have seldom been as impressed as I am by the Bodum Double-Wall Brewer.

I should not have been surprised, Bodum has been a leader in coffee makers (chiefly French press) and I already owned some of their unique double-walled glasses. They make the liquid seem to float in air.

Starting from the top, the included gold plated titanium filter is the best of its type I have seen. You can use standard paper filters with this brewer, but the gold filter lets all of the coffee's flavorful oils pass through while trapping the grounds.

The clear filter base that attaches with a silicone ring is made of heavy glass, not plastic. It can remain perfectly clear of stains and should never scratch.

Also included is a silicone stopper to cap off the carafe once brewing is done.

The glass carafe has a silicone grip, and silicone base bumper. The double walled construction not only looks great, but keeps the coffee warm for over an hour.

The base bumper is a good idea, although the glass is exceptionally strong, it is also exceptionally thin and will shatter without careful handling. I do not mark it down for this as thicker glass would destroy the liquid floating in space illusion.

I gave 2 as gifts, and both recipients were absolutely thrilled. I wish they were unbreakable (be careful with the glass filter holder as well) but cannot take marks away from Bodum for choosing the best possible construction for beauty, stain resistance, and taste.

Not for everyday use for those who are not careful. But for impressing guests, remove the bottom bumper when bringing the carafe to the table for the full effect.
