Tweeter and the Baby Boomers - Review written on May 02, 2008

For an assemblage of big-name stars, the Traveling Wilburys is about as good as it gets. Lynne, Dylan, Harrison, Orbison, and Petty team up and perform together just as well as they do when on their own with their own bands. Usually super groups come across as contrived and shoe-horned to fit a market niche, but these guys combine in a way that, had Roy Orbison lived another 5 years or more, they might have achieved enough fame as a group to rival the fame they achieved on their own, or, in Harrison's case, as a lesser member of the Beatles. Who knows? The only drawback I can find is that their musical style is a bit dated, so maybe today's listeners won't be very impressed, but for nostalgic "boomers" on a fixed income you can't beat the 2 CD/1 DVD set that's being offered for sale. Highly recommended.
Even better than you would expect from these guys - Review written on April 05, 2008

Music lovers would rightfully expect some pretty awesome songs to be written and performed by a group consisting of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan, but, I dare say, no one could have anticipated the treasure that these superstar musicians created. No, not even George, Tom, Jeff, Roy, and Bob themselves had an inkling that they would achieve what they did.
The story of how these recording industry giants came together to form the "Traveling Wilburys" is as amazing as the music they produced. These guys were all friends, and when George Harrison needed to come up with a song for the flip side of a new single of his that was about to be released called "This Is Love," he acted more or less on a whim and asked his friends to collaborate with him to come up with a song that could be used for that purpose. What they came up with was the song "Handle With Care," and it was way too good to be a "B" side.
This was the birth of "The Traveling Wiburys." Their story, as told by the Wilburys themselves, is included on a DVD in this set, and it is just about as entertaining as the music.
Because of the success with their first song, and because of the fun they had in recording it, George asked the others if they would like to make an album. They agreed, and in only ten days in May of 1988 they came up with the ten songs of their first album.
The spontaneity of their collaboration is plainly felt as one listens to their music. It was magic from Day One.
My two favorite songs are "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line." I love the videos, too, especially the "End of the Line" video.
I cannot recommend this 2 CD, 1 DVD set strongly enough! It is unimaginable to me that anyone who likes the music of each of these performers individually would not absolutely love the songs of the Wilburys.
This one is a "must have!"
Tom
P.S.
It is sad that George Harrison and Roy Orbison have passed away. May God rest your souls, George and Roy. Thank you for the great music you left us.
awesome CD/DVD set by The Traveling Wilburys - Review written on February 21, 2008

The Traveling Wilburys put out this incredibly awesome two CD/one DVD set; and it wows me whenever I listen to it. The quality of the sound couldn't be better; and the DVD footage and music videos are excellent and fun to watch over and over again.
This is one outstanding band. George Harrison wanted his own band and that's what he got. The group members include none other than Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty--along with, of course, George Harrison. Jeff Lynne and all the others who worked on this project are incredibly talented, too. I could never get tired of this music.
The first CD opens with "Handle With Care." "Handle With Care" features Roy Orbison singing the verses and they all come in on the chorus for an effect that blows me away! "Handle With Care" is a beautiful rock ballad that makes a strong start for this album. "Last Night" has a great arrangement for guitar and percussion; and they sing and play this to perfection! There's just a slight touch of a country twist to "Last Night" that really enhances the beauty of this number. "Congratulations" is a torchy rock ballad as they lament the loss of their women. "Congratulations" has great vocals by Bob Dylan and again the whole group joins in on the chorus for a great effect! "End Of The Line" has Tom Petty singing his best and it all works very well. Great guitar, percussion--and that's some melody, too! There are two bonus tracks including "Maxine" which has a Beatles type of flavor to it; "Maxine" should have been released earlier than this but it's still better late than never!
The second CD continues the great music. "Inside Out" has a great beat and Bob Dylan with the other men on chorus all perform this flawlessly. "Inside Out" rocks well and I really like this tune. "If You Belonged To Me" is another ballad with a slight country twist to this rock tune; and I love it! "Where Were You Last Night?" has a Beatles type of musical arrangement and they sing this without a superfluous note! The modulations between major and minor keys work to make "Where Were You Last Night?" a very solid hit for this band. In addition, quite a strong number is "Wilbury Twist;" this number rocks really hard and the positive energy strikes me as truly exceptional. "Wilbury Twist" is a modern day equivalent to Cubby Checker's songs about twisting--"Wilbury Twist" is also perhaps my favorite tune in this package! Finally, the second CD has two bonus tracks just like the first CD does; and listen for "Runaway." "Runaway" gives us the band doing a great cover of "Runaway" that would make Del Shannon proud.
And then there's that DVD. What a DVD it is! You get a documentary about how the group formed and how they made this great music--there is very special footage shot using a home camcorder. There are also a few music videos that you won't forget anytime soon.
Overall, this is one strong package from The Traveling Wilburys. George Harrison got his own band; and they all put their egos aside and made some of the best rock I've ever heard. I highly recommend this for fans of good quality rock and roll; and people who enjoy work by the individual artists in this band will enjoy this package set as well.

The Beatles' George Harrison, Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. Sounds like one hell of a super group, doesn't it? Well, it was! Back in 1988 this five some hooked-up to write and perform the kinds of music they do best. Alone, the five each had their own unique sound. Together, they brought all those sounds together to take themselves to a higher plane. It also helped that they were the closet of friends.
Although they only released two studio albums, the meat-and-potatoes of those albums can be found here (okay, it's both albums with bonus tracks). "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line" were perhaps their most memorable, but each track falls in line with the Americana sound that the Wilburys were known for. Two previously unreleased tracks are included on each disc. Where most bonus tracks are filler and junk, the ones included here are quite good. Be sure to look for the 3 disc Deluxe Edition that includes a live DVD performance

I just got this as a gift. I thought...Wilburys? It's been a long time. So I play the audio. "You Took My Breath Away" applies. This is a truly great rock n' roll album. We have an incredible eclectic collection of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and (on the first album) Roy Orbison, all intermixed and/or taking turns to get their licks in, and at the top of their games (Roy's song "You're Not Alone Anymore" may be his greatest song, IMHO). The guitar rock - acoustic or electric - is simply terrific and driving. The lyrics are mostly great. The presentation is like a dream: leading vocals by some of the greatest rock voices of all time, sometimes switching from one great to another. The backups of course are marvelous.
I won't go into details - there are some outstandingly perspicacious reviews below, where fans tell one everything that needs to be known about who does what, how they came to be, etc. Buy and savor this album. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
