The Pink Martinis rule when it comes to creative and
innovative cocktail music. Their unique style brings
them out in front of all others once again.

Pink Martini has been my favorite band since their first CD Sympathique in the 90s. Their style is an indescribably delicious mix of world, jazz, swing, classical (with a twist) and new works. Good to dance to, clean house to or just lighten up your mood. Besides this, their talent, especially vocalist China Forbes, Piano and artistic director Thomas Lauderdale and Gavin Bondy on the trumpet is stunning. The rest of the band is top notch too including a rocking percussion section. This CD is as well produced as all their work, great depth of sound quality and variety of musical styles. If you don't already know their work it will knock your socks off. If you do know them is will satisfy your craving for more.

Magnificent. I feel this album is their best work yet. The diversity and strength of the group shines through every piece on this album. Too many favorite songs to mention. Every song is a joy to listen to. Taya Tan just oozes with style, feels like I've stepped into a Wong Kar Wai film (I know, it's Japanese vs. Chinese but the feel is still there)...Ojala is so catchy my 3 year old sings and dances along....and Eugene is a great contemporary feeling song...finally, Tea for Two is a true Gem of a duet with pure sincerity....I've listened to this CD over and over since it was released and have yet to get tired of the songs.
Great job Pink Martini....Every album just gets better and better.

"Hey Eugene" is an expansion of the first two Pink Martini CDs, only showing us a bit more diversity in their musical repertore. Along with songs in English, Spanish, French, etc. that were present previously, they have now added Japanese to their song languages. Pink Martini is hard to pin down to a particular style: they may be called diverse, a parody, a small orchestra, a band, a lounge act, and probably several other incomplete descriptions. You may accurately call them fun and entertaining, though, and "Hey Eugene" is certainly that.

Everything about this album is good. I heard the title track and just bought it on the strength of that. If you like those tracks that ooze tragedy and cinematic melodrama then you need to hear the Sabotage album by Gamine. We ned more music like this!

I liked this but I don't think it is quite as good as their previous two albums. The lyrics were not as unique or playful compared to the songs in Hang On Little Tomato (referring to Lily, Hang On to the Vine, and Clementine tracks). And the overall album wasn't quite as refreshing and wonderful as Sympathetique. The performances still have that wonderful ballroom meets big band, and orchestra with terrific international flavor. I will still eagerly await Pink Martini's next venture, but didn't like this quite as much as earlier work.

Wow...this was a revelation. the vocals, instrumentation, material..everything. China Forbes and the rest of this wonderful group have to be one of the best things to happen to music in a long time. Every song is a winner. they effortlessly shift between styles, languages and moods but still have very distinctive sound. Personal favorite is "Hey Eugene", also loved the cover of "Tea for two" with Jimmy Scott. waiting for more!

A friend gave us "Hey Eugene" by Pink Martini as a Christmas present and i will be forever grateful. The album has been well and accurately reviewed here on Amazon and everyone has favorite tracks. Frankly, I liked them all; but what I liked most about this collection and the group is the total originality involved in the production and the great places the music takes the listener. Whether its old American standards, Latin, Japanese, Arabic, etc., it's all a great trip. I'm definitely getting the group's other albums.

For those of you (like me) who loved Sympathique, but were left for wanting with Hang on Little Tomato... well, this is a great new cd. While it still has the easily accessible songs, it also has some real gems with international flair and what feels to be huge orchestral productions. I have fallen in love with Pink Martini all over again.

I was previously unfamiliar with Pink Martini, but decided to try the album, and was thoroughly pleased. China Forbes has a clear, engaging, vocal quality that evokes kind memories of some of the old Big Band singers, though the album would be difficult to fit into any one category..."Easy Listening"?...Maybe... I don't know how many languages Miss Forbes can sing in, but several are in evidence here.....

The album certainly has a Latin flavour, though the opening cut, "Everywhere", the title cut, and "Tea for Two" reach back into our own musical heritage... Great nostalgic duet on "Tea for Two", and the title cut is a real ear-catcher.

If you want to hear a wonderful voice, superbly backed, sing multiple genre of music well, this album is for you. The cover fits well with the music, and I, for one, will Not object to the girl holding a cigarette...Well Recommended.

Hey Eugene! (Again?)
I expexted better than this from Pink Martini. A lot of repeats from previous CD's and the new numbers are not inspiring. Sad to see such a decline in the creativity of this group.

I love all of their albums. Their music is just so global. One gripe that I do have is China's french. Her accent bothers me. Almost to the point where I don't even listen to the french songs. Other than that everything is superb though. Don't hesitate to buy this or any of their other works. Worth every penny.

I am new to Pink Martini's music. I came across their latest cd HEY EUGENE! last weekend and decided to check it out. I didn't know what to really exepct but I loved what I had heard. I am normally not into lounge or jazz music. Most of it I find to be rather boring but Pink Martini livens things up a bit with their fusion of jazz and world music. Whenever I listen to HEY EUGENE!, I feel like I am in a smokey jazz club in the 1950s, drinking an extra dry martini while soaking in the music. I enjoyed listening to every single song on the album. HEY EUGENE! is a great cd to relax to with a cosmopolitan after a long day at work.

Pink Martini's third album is a welcome companion to the first two. "Hey Eugene!" is a joyful follow-up to "Sympathique" and "Hang on little tomato." Portland,Oregon's house band returns in top form.

"Everywhere" sounds like a song plucked from a '40s movie musical. One could imagine Fred and Ginger swaying to it. "Tempo Perdido" is a joyous Brazilian song;it sounds like it came straight from Sao Paulo's samba schools."Taya Tan" goes across the globe for an exotic Japanese cabaret song;it would go well with the lounge versions of Yellow Magic Orchestra on Senor Coconut's "Yellow Fever!" "City of Night" is a perfect noir song. "Bukra Wba'do" is a Middle Eastern cabaret song, with hints of Bollywood. "Cante e Dance" is as close as Pink Martini will ever come to smooth jazz. "Hey Eugene" is Pink Martini's signature number, always played at their live concerts. It's a bittersweet song with zest to it. The standout track is "Dosvedanya mio bombino",blending Russian with Latin sensibilities. It's a song about lost love and regret. It speaks of "storming the Kremlin of your heart" from the perspective of a Russian in Italy. It's a joyous song, yet its melancholy makes it heart-wrenching.

"Hey Eugene!" is a perfect addition to any lounge,or "retro with an edge" collection. It's smooth jazz with an international twist. It's a musical buffet, with delicious, spicy pieces from around the world.

Oh, goodness . . . this is a great album, but if you have the chance, DO try to search out the Pink Martini website and plan on attending an upcoming concert. I had the good fortune to see them live, AND FREE this summer . . . how fun is that?!!! Pink Martini's "Hey, Eugene" disc is lovely, and I especially love the song "Mar Desconocido" as it contains within it the beautiful Chopin Waltz in C# minor as an added bonus - sort of the fruit creme filling inside a lush chocolate truffle. I wrote them after the concert to ask if they had or will record the AMAZING rendition they performed of "Malaguena" - this being the pinnacle performance of this summer season (and I spent a lot of time concerting this season!). They said it will be recorded for their NEXT album . . . oh, just wait until you hear it. Your ears are going to be happy, happy!

There are a few good tunes in "Hey Eugene". But for the most part, I can't recommend it. China Forbes and bandleader Thomas Lauderdale do their best to keep the boat afloat with their cozy blend of pop cabaret, jazz, and latin-tinged tunes. You could do a whole lot worse than "Hey Eugene". If you want your senses dazzled buy Sympathique. It's marvelous!

This album has a little of erverything!
The chorus at the end of "Hey Eugene," for example echoes of 1970s sitcom staples, Good Times and The Jeffersons.
There are songs in Arabic -- "Bukra Wba'do," ("Tomorrow and the Day After"). And Portuguese -- "Tempo Perdido" ("Lost Time").

You will enjoy it as much as the previous works.

I first heard of Pink Martini at a dinner party. The sounds were wonderful but not until I got my own CDs did I really get hooked on their music. I can listen to the first two albums back to back without feeling tired of their sound. Naturally I had high expectations for their new album Hey Eugene. I was sorely disappointed...I guess mainly because I hyped about how good it would be. Having the album for the past two months, I have to say that it has grown on me. I really like the title track Hey Eugene and there are some other catchy songs. I wouldn't rate this group less than 5 stars and I can't wait to see them live at the Hollywood Bowl next month.

This is the third cd (following Sympathique & Hang On Little Tomato)by this fabulously ecclectic musical entourage. Each CD builds and reinforces this groups range and style. Peppering their original compositions with some wonderful world musical selections, singing is done in the songs original languages, which is a treat in itself. Of course having a band of incredible depth and range to back up vocals by China Forbes adds volumes to the mix. The songs are addictive and you will not be able to stop playing this CD on your way to work. "Taya Tan" is particularly intriguing with its Asian sound, and Bukra Wba'do is a knockdown Middle eastern cut which will get you moving in your seat as well as reminding you that there is fantastic music all over the globe. The album ends with a duet between China Forbes and Jimmy Scott in "Tea for Two". Jimmy is at his all time best with his delivery and pauses counterbalancing China's light and sweet melodies. While there are faults to any production, I cannot find any worth mentioning here. Five stars and one moon is my rating. Enjoy!!

We really liked this CD, and played it quite a bit after we bought it. It benefits as well I think from skipping around a bit, listening to the songs individually and in other mixes. The relentless multi-ethnic focus - a song in Japanese, one in Arabic, several in Spanish and French, can make it seem a little like a hodge-podge of experiments, but China Forbes' crooning will win you over.

I have been a big fan of Pink Martini since I heard them first on NPR and bought their first album. I loved their second album, too; these two albums are among my listening favorites. When I attened a live Pink Martini concert in July, 2007, I really looked forward to hearing new songs from "Hey Eugene." The concert was great, but the new songs didn't seem to match the quality and intensity of the music from the previous two albums. There's nothing new in "Hey Eugene," and some of the music is actually trite (especially the title song). The best song on the album is the Portugese song "Sing and Dance"--it matches the best of the former two collections. "Hey Eugene" is not a bad album, it's just a disappointing follow up.

While many of this album's songs reflect the usual fine output of the creative collage known as Pink Martini, Hey Eugene is a truly extraordinary piece, one that in the "good ol' days" Casey Kasem would have taken right to the top of the charts. My prediction is that the song will be a Golden Oldie for many years, and makes purchase of the album a must.
