Awesome Little Weed Hog - Review written on June 03, 2008

I was hesitant about buying this item when I read some of the reviews but I decided for such a low price I'd give it a shot. I was amazed at how fast it arrived and even more pleased when I used it for the first time. It's a little powerhouse. I especially like the cord saver in the handle--it keeps the cord from unplugging. But, the amazing thing was it really works good. I had weed almost knee high and it took care of them without any problems and I didn't have any trouble with the automatic feed.
Good for light duty edging and trimming - Review written on June 02, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
I have a small yard - takes me about 20 minutes to mow it - and I was needing something to get the tall grass at the edges of the patio and fence. This fills the bill nicely. It's lightweight and it cuts a good swath through even thick grass, such as bermuda runners that are lapping over into the flowerbeds.
I don't think I'd try to use it for heavy duty, like trimming a whole hillside. It's a lightweight product designed for light duty work. I found that if I ran it for more than a couple of minutes some nasty burning smells came from the motor.
Some other reviewers have complained about the shroud. Does anyone really use the shroud? I always assumed it was just included for liability protection. That way when you lose an eye B+D can't be blamed, because you didn't attach the (completely impractical and unusable) shroud. So yeah, eye protection. I'd also recommend earplugs as well; the high-frequency whine of the motor hurt my ears and I had to pop in some Hearos.
For the price, which is a Jackson as of this writing, I'd buy it again.
Great Trimmer for $19.99 - Review written on May 26, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
This is a great trimmer for $19.99. It does a nice job of trimming the grass and weed. It is light and the noise level is comparable to similar trimmers. I picked up a 50 ft. outdoor power extension cord for $8 at Home Depot.

Keep looking, this is a low quility product, string binds up, low power, cuts poorly. may be one year product.

Maybe that should be obvious, but it wasn't to me. A good extension cord costs more than the device.
Easy to set up and use, great value - Review written on March 26, 2008

I bought this product before traveling for 10 days. When I got back, I set it up quickly without screws and started using it in about 10 minutes. Worked great, the autmotatic feed really works. I bought the aditional pack of 3 replacement string. Some commented on this site that the string runned out fast, I have not experienced this issue. I will use it some more and comment here. By the way, I had a jungle waiting after the trip and the trimmer had no trouble cutting it all. The edger function is so easy to use.
I have one and love it - Review written on January 27, 2008

I bought one last year for full price from Walmart or Homedepot to replace the expensive gas whacker that never worked. I love it. I have a lot of land and lots of thick weeds that I ignore too long. This thing does the trick for me and I have not had any problems at all. Sure, it runs out of juice and you have to recharge it after a half hour of use, but so what. For $29 deal of the day, its well worth the price.
cheap plastic - Review written on January 20, 2008

Like most B&D products they are cheap made and last no more then 2 years. Now I try to fix them myself or super glue the plastic. I also own a B&L blower that just stoped working about the same time. You get what you pay for.

This item is light weight and handles like a gem. I had no problem starting the trimmer and it handled well.
Cheap - Review written on November 06, 2007

The one I had not only didn't last very long, but while it did work, the power and the .062" string was very underwhelming. If you don't want to use a gas-powered weed whacker, look for the Ryobi electric trimmer with the .080" line.

Black & Decker 13-Inch Automatic Feed String Trimmer and Edger #ST7700
Easy to assemble, light weight, great manuverability.....died after just 3 (approx) minutes. I gave it a few 10 minute intervals to 'rest' after that long workout, finally sticking it back in the box and returning. Got prompt replacement, it's in my garage...unopened. Sure hope I can get a season out of it next year...high hopes. Wonder how good the edger works? Could've used that this past season.
I don't recommend this particular trimmer; spend a few more bucks and hopefully you'll get your job done.
Automatic feed was Always feed - Review written on November 04, 2007

We got this thing right after it came out. It wasn't and automatic feed so much as it was an always feed. It basically just always fed out line, using it up quickly. It ended up being cheaper to buy a new weed eater (not this brand or with that feature) than it was to keep buying line. About the only positive was the service from the company. They'd send replacement parts to us when we asked at least for the first year. There was a small plastic piece which controls the feed of the line. It was constantly wearing down and melting. This just didn't work. The replacements had a piece of metal on it to try and help, but it didn't really do much.

The 13 inch black and decker trimmer is great, the only downside is how loud it is, great for quick edging and trimming.

Works okay especially for the price. However, it does wear on the hands a LOT and the weeding area could be a bit better. For the price it is pretty good though. Be sure to buy a 50 ft extension cord with it though.
Definitely not a grasshog - Review written on September 29, 2007

Horrible product. Almost caught fire from burned out motor on first useage. It started smoking after six minutes of light use. Do not buy. Buy one of the Black & Decker grasshog models instead. They need to recall this thing before someone gets injured.

I wish I could review the product fully, but Amazon shipped it without the black plastic shroud that goes on the back of the motor. And right now, I don't know when I'll get a replacement. It was at a good price and it looks nice - but not very useful in the shape it's in.

A portion of my yard was not accessible all spring and summer due to construction. The grass and weeds grew to 4' tall. Tried this trimmer and edger, which does not state it is a weed wacker, and did it ever take care of those weeds. The string feeder works great, bought extra spools but did not need them for this job. It is easy to handle (I use a cane) and had no problem at all. No gas smell, not noisy. I cannot say enough good things about this Black & Decker product.
Easy to use trimmer - Review written on July 12, 2007

I am very pleased with the ease and strong performance of the B & D edger and trimmer (#ST7700). I have both Bermuda and St Augustine grass and it cleanly cuts with out tearing up stolons. I use it on a large bed of primrose and it cleanly cuts the tough runners. In addition to the light weight the handles make it east to switch from trimming to cutting.

This purchase was very well worth it. Has a lot of power and lightweight. I can't use gas trimmers so this was the next best thing, very powerful cut. Highly recommend.

lasted less than 1 year - always a problem - Review written on May 21, 2007

I purchased this trimmer last year. It has already died, but I was so frustrated with it, that's OK. (if interested, you can see my 3-star review right after purchase)
The automatic feed never worked right: I had to continuously unplug the thing and advance the line: the auto feed depends on a sprocket system that allows the spool to advance: but as soon as dust gets inside (which happens immediately), the sprocket binds up, and the line does not feed out.
Also the black guard that protects the user from debris getting kicked back is fastened with one small screw in soft plastic: the vibrations caused by normal usage caused this screw to strip out in the second use. Getting the item back to B&D for warranty repair would have cost me more than a new unit, so I did my own repair last year. The construction seems rally cheap and therefore potentially unsafe to me.
This trimmer has been nothing but trouble since I bought it. It's better to use a less-polluting electric trimmer (not gas powered), but this one is not well made.

It has lots of power and is easy to use. It converts from trimmer to edger with one easy twist. Also a great price.
