Wonderfully captures the feel of the film - Review written on July 19, 2007

The Departed finally won Martin Scorsese the long overdue Oscar he has so very much deserved over the years. Like Goodfellas and Casino before it, The Departed utilized a soundtrack of previously available songs to set the mood and capture the feel of the film, and this soundtrack succeeds on just about all counts. The blistering live rendition of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" by Roger Waters, Van Morrison, and The Band starts the disc off, and is followed by classic tracks from the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers Band, and Patsy Cline. Sandwiched in between these older acts and the two score tracks contributed from composer Howard Shore, is the instantly catchy "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" from punk favorites the Dropkick Murphys, which you'll no doubt remember nodding your head to when watching the film. There may not be anything featured here that you haven't heard before or seen somewhere else, but the soundtrack for The Departed is a blast regardless and wonderfully captures the feel of the film. In those regards alone, the soundtrack, much like the film itself, is a pleasently wonderful treat.
"The Beach Boys' obscure 1972 song "Sail On, Sailor"...EXCUSE me??? - Review written on May 15, 2007

Note to Amazon Editorial Reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli: "Sail On Sailor" is a lot of things, and "obscure" isn't one of them. It's widely regarded as the final burst of brilliance (within the Beach Boys framework) from Brian Wilson, the final "classic" song from the lineup including Carl and Dennis Wilson, Brian as a composer, Al Jardine and Mike Love. It was sung by Blondie Chaplin, who...along with Ricky Fataar...was with the band for three albums (Carl & The Passions So Tough, Holland, In Concert). Explain to me how a Beach Boys song that is not sung by Brian constitutes a "slight twist?"

This is the SCORE from the film, by Howard Shore. There is a SECOND album containing the SONGS from the film, and two cuts of the score. That album has the Stones, Beach Boys, Dropkick Murphys, Roger Waters, and several other bands.
Both albums are superb. However, we're hear to talk about the score.
It is a terrific score, unlike any previous work from Howard Shore. Wonderful tango, heartfelt music....one of the better scores from 06'. Just listen to the first track sample. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
