I was listening to AOL Radio one day and they played Corrine Bailey Rae. The song they played would come to be one of my all-time favorites. That song is called "Breathless." After that, someone who I often discuss music with mentioned Corrine, basically singing her praises. Since her taste in music is generally tasteful, I just had to hear Rae's self-titled debut. After listening to this album, I will profess that it exceeds decent slightly. Many have said that this album is excellent, brilliant and/or remarkable, and I have to disagree. This album is solid and definitely different from most of the music that has come out lately, but I wasn't impressed overall. I appreciate her craft of guitar-playing, her lyrical ability (she wrote or co-wrote everything on this LP) and the relaxed tone she tends to sing in, but it didn't do much for me.
All songs on "Corrine Bailey Rae" are either ballads or mid-tempo. I didn't have a problem with that since I love both tempos of music. As stated before, "Breathless" is a gem, but its the only song that stands out. Corrine exclaims her obsessive infatuation with her best friend on this track, and she does a beautiful job. The guitar compliments this song a great deal, not to mention it has one of the best hooks I've ever heard (lyric and melody wise.) "There's this chemistry, energy, a synchronicity when we're all alone", wow! Amazing lyrics! I related to "Trouble Sleeping" directly. This mid-tempo has good production and even better lyrics. Corrine is falling in love, but because love sometimes has a bad reputation, she is steadily denying that she is falling for someone. "Put Your Records On" was released to radio, and there is no need to wonder why because it is kind of radio friendly and has a nice hook and beat. "Enchantment" and "Butterfly" are both mid-tempos which contain very thought-provoking lyrics and decent production. Both songs are worth listening to.
Corrine's voice is sometimes pretty emotionless and also quirky, but that is what helps to make her different. Though this album didn't a lot for me, still, I recommend it to neo-soul fans or fans of soft rock. 3 stars.

I bought this for the song Put Your Records On, thats all I knew about this CD...I liked how someone sang it on American Idol...so I was buying this on blind faith and hoping I would like it. I figured I would like a few songs and it would be shelved for a long time. I don't like jazz or blues music that much, but I LOVE this CD. I think she has a great voice, how someone can call it monotone I don't know, but it draws you in and the stories with the songs are just perfect. I wanted to buy more of her songs, but there aren't any yet, come on Corinne, get recording! As for comparison I had bought Norah Jones also in the past, but that one didn't go anywhere with me, it got shelved pretty quick, Corinne has a whole different style and voice.
