Eye Candy > Story Content? - Review written on January 14, 2008

The movie was decent. It wasnt bad, it wasn't awesome. More than anything; I did actually enjoy the movie (somewhat). Paul walker did well enough, and Jessica Alba as well. The cinematography and locale is beautiful. What didn't work for me was the chemistry between the two lead's. Sure they look great, but their chemistry just wasnt' there. Throughout the movie, there's not much character development between the two, which is sad, considering they're the main characters. Though pleasing to the eye, they spent a little too much on the eye candy, and not enough on the content. The movie is decent, and watchable, but definitely nothing you'd write home about. I honestly believe the story with this current cast could have been done much better if it were put into the hands of a better director. 3/5 stars from me.
Not your typical teen snooze fest, this film actually delivers the goods... - Review written on July 30, 2007

`Into the Blue' could have easily been nothing more than a toned body showcase with little plot and even littler brain patterns but instead it proves itself smart, exciting and worthwhile after all. I don't think I can really express fully my surprise when walking out of this film. I really expected nothing more than Alba in full skimp form frolicking in the ocean but instead I got an intelligent and very well plotted action film that continues to entertain me viewing after viewing. The scenery is nothing short of gorgeous and the quick paced editing of some of the key action scenes will keep you glued to the edge of your seat in sick anticipation of the next sequence. The directing is actually so delicately handled that the audience begins to feel the claustrophobia and panicked hysteria that can come from too much water.
The film follows Jared and Sam, played by onscreen couple Paul Walker and Jessica Alba, as they struggle with the consequences of buried treasure and smuggled cocaine. You see Jared has just been fired from his job as a snorkel guide, and as much as Sam claims to be happy with their poor existence Jared is determined to find the wreckage of the ship Zephyr and make himself, and his girl, very rich. With the extra time on his hands and some new toys thanks to a visiting friend and his connections they set off to find this wreckage but they never bargained on finding a sunken plane containing kilo's upon kilo's of cocaine. Jared's friend Bryce and his girlfriend Amanda are a bit careless and a lot selfish and so decisions are made that jeopardize everyone involved, even the innocent.
The acting is actually decent for the cast included. Paul Walker perhaps gives his finest performance, beings that for the most part I find him a talentless hack, and Alba does an arguably great job with her character. Love Scott Caan and probably always will and here he doesn't disappoint and neither does Ashley Scott. Josh Brolin also delivers as the rival treasure hunter, complete with deliciously evil stereotypes.
The film though transcends the acting and just becomes a fun film. It's not going to win awards or even be considered as a film on the verge of but it delivers one heck of a great time and it's smart in doing so. There is really so much to enjoy here, from the scenery (both oceanic and Albatic) to the intensity to the sheer shock of pure enjoyment. So shuck aside the preconceived notion that this, as most do, with suck royally and enjoy what might be one of the best films any of it's stars will have the opportunity to partake in (with `Sin City' left out of the equation).
Great summer rental! Eye candy, action, blue waters, and did I mention eye candy! - Review written on June 05, 2007

This is the type of movie that DVD rentals were made for as this movie delivers on showing you engaging underwater scenes, action, sexy sexy Paul Walker and Jessica Alba, hungry sharks, humor and a nicely packaged little love story with some flavor.
While 4 stars may seem like too much for this type of flick (OK I give it 3++), it actually delivers in its own way. We're not talking Oscar material here as the script is full of cliches, the acting is a little wooden, poor Jessica's character had nothing to do except look stunning (lips and back ;-) and there are some plot holes. But irrespectively of all this, it kept me smiling from start to finish.
This movie was massacred by critics and I can see why, but I always would rather see a movie deliver on its own scale than fail in every scale, like some movies that are supposed to be funny and they are not. I recommend this one if you want to feel summery and spend a couple of hours with hot/tanned people surrounded by bad guys and gorgeous blue water.

Being a big fan of Walker and Alba,I looked forward to see how they would be on screen together.I watched it,when it came on tv and was amazed. The chemistry was very cool.It is one of those movies, for me anyway, that whenever it is on,I would watch it.It has all the elements of a beach type movie, with the bikinis and peril.Being it is a action/drama type flick. I'm sure ,that if you are checking out the review for this, you pretty much know about the movie. I waited til the price went down and see Amazon has one of the better prices. It isn't great, but it keeps you on the edge ,til the end. Couple of surprises and cool ocean action....
2.5: dumb dumb dumb...but really pretty - Review written on May 25, 2007

A movie like Into the Blue is one of those kind of films where if you have doubts as to its merits and then watch it, well, it's your own fault. You notice the 2 leads on the cover, the setting, the plot and you just say to yourself "oh no, I might not like this right?" Well you'd be pretty right, depending on what you think you're getting into. You wanting to see an original script? Good acting? Well no but if you want to see beautiful cinematography and actors that look just as good well here you go.
Jared and Sam (Paul Walker and Jessica Alba) are a young couple living in the Bahamas. Jared was fired recently as a scuba dive guide while Sam works at a dolphin show as an announcer. One day, Jared's brother Bryce and his new girlfriend Amanda (Scott Caan and Ashley Scott) arrive and go on a scuba dive. They discover 2 things: a plane that crashed which carries a large supply of cocaine as well as artifacts underneath the sand. But of course they don't have the equipment to haul up what could be a sunken vessel so it becomes a question of ethics: get the cocaine and use the money to fund the vessel expedition or leave it alone. Well, there is also the business of a treasure hunter rival as well as the cocaine owner who wants it back and is willing to go far to get it back.
I'll get the positives out of the way because I'm gonna blast this film later. This is one attractive looking movie with the cinematography showing off the idyllic life that you can have in the Bahamas and the underwater photography was well-done as well. The other is of course seeing Alba and Scott in bikinis, which'll get the males salivating. In fact you can make a case this is really the only reason to watch. As for the ladies, well I'm sure Walker is bound to get them going nuts since he's shirtless for a huge chunk of the movie.
Everything else though is just awful. Granted, parts of the story were kind of surprising since half the time I didn't know where it was going but whether that was the script being ahead of me or it just didn't know what it was doing, I haven't a clue. Not to mention these characters are some of the most dumbest I've seen with so many bad choices and you wonder maybe they've been out in the sun too long. And while attractive, all 4 of the leads either look uninterested or they're just not bringing all their acting cards to the table, especially Walker who just feels so...bland. And what's with his Aquaman-like lung capacity?
Should you buy it? No, unless you're a Walker or Alba fan. Should you rent it? If you haven't found anything else, I suppose you can but don't say I didn't warn you.
Jessica Alba looking good in Blu-Ray! - Review written on December 14, 2006

Story Synopsis:
If you are a clothing minimalist, Into The Blue is for you. With the azure skies and crystal waters of the Bahamas their backyard, Jared (Walker) and his girlfriend, Sam (Alba), enjoy a peaceful existence...and incredible tans. But, with the arrival of Sam's childhood friend, Bryce (Caan), and his girlfriend Amanda (Scott), and the subsequent discovering of a possible sunken treasure, greed rears its head jeopardizing not only their friendship, but their very lives.
Disc Picture:
The 2.32:1 MPEG-2 Blu-ray Disc picture looks great, overall. There is a purposely oversaturated look to the picture, with blown-out whites and colors. The underwater color schemes seem to really look good as well. The picture quality is outstanding, with beautiful locales, which is improved of course by the presence of Jessica Alba.
Soundtrack:
The linear PCM 5.1-channel soundtrack uses a broad front stage, good surround integration, and well-recorded dialogue to deliver an enjoyable audio experience. Deep bass is not very prevalent, making the soundtrack sound a bit thin.
Underwater Thriller - Review written on November 16, 2006

Jared (Paul Walker) works as a scuba teacher but dreams of being a treasure hunter who finds a gold-laden shipwreck. His girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba) supports him in all that he does and truly loves him. When Jared's brother Bryce (Scott Caan) shows up with a new girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Scott) luck seems to go their way. They have access to a boat and have found a few scattered remnants of a wreck that might be the pirate ship that's supposed to be the mother lode of treasure ships. Unfortunately, a plane with cocaine has crashed into the ocean nearby and complicates the situation when the drug runners come looking for their lost product. Further trouble happens as everyone argue how best to proceed with the search for the treasure ship, and what to do about the cocaine.
John Stockwell directed the movie and does an amazing job of shooting eye-catching imagery that's stunning on the Blu-ray presentation. I found myself getting sidetracked more than once by the seascape captured in the camera lens, and the fact that I noticed it at all while Jessica Alba was swimming around in a bikini is saying a lot. The audio portion of the movie is packaged uncompressed, allowing the film to take full advantage of a surround sound system and throughly wow the audiophile.
Although INTO THE BLUE doesn't go anywhere spectacular for the experienced moviegoer (films like THE DEEP and A SIMPLE PLAN offer similar plot lines and conflict), it does deliver a very watchable story. The added bonus of the incredible underwater imagery and the impeccable sound system is worth getting the movie in Blu-ray if you don't already have it on DVD.
As a thriller, INTO THE BLUE works. And it's a great buddy flick. Not exactly date material, but if you're with someone who likes action and tension, this will fit the bill nicely.
Extremely clever directing - Review written on August 31, 2006

3 stars for the movie, plus a bonus star to the director for being a genius. How you ask? It's all about Paul Walker. Man do I love that guy. Absolute worst actor in Hollywood, but still gets part after part. His acting style is like a piece of wood with constipation. But he's just bad enough to be lovable. People still like him despite his failing, not like Hayden Christenson (Anakin from Star Wars), who just needs to die.
Anyways, so the director is sitting and thinking: "Hmmm... Paul Walker's in this movie. How do I distract people from his god awful acting enough so they'll still like it?" Then the answer hits him like a sledge hammer to the head. Get a super ridiculously hot woman to play along side him! Enter Jessica Alba. In a bikini. Think any guy is watching Paul Walker any more? And that handles half the audience at least.
Now if that isn't enough, we also have pirates, sharks, mantas, and other sea creatures who consequently get addicted to cocaine, and lots of underwater shots of our illustrious stars diving for treasure / drugs. Also, putting Paul Walker underwater for much of the film erases the need for him to talk. Bonus!
