If you think you are a gamer, try this. Don't give up after passing the first town, it gets better and more interesting. I used to think that God of War was the best game I have played, but in My Opinion Resident Evil 4 is now my favorite game (for the PS2). The PS3 has better graphics, but a game is more than just that. Acting, story, sound, etc. This game has it all.

My little cousin came over my place once and saw me playing and his thoughts were, "that game has no graphics", but then he turned off his PSP and decided to see me playing instead. Even my wife loves it.

The Best Resident Evil Game In The Franchise - Review written on August 20, 2008

Resident Evil 4 is by far the best Resident Evil game. In it, there really aren't zombies, but crazy towns people with little creatures inside of them.
Capcom and the designers of Resident Evil definately fixed the error of Resident Evil Code Veronica X, and put in a lot more ammo. The even added a money system, and first person shooting system for your rifle/sniper.
It is very challenging, and will provide about 20 hours worth of fun for experienced gamers. You'll enjoy the plot and the ending and hours of gory excitment and scares.

Well what can I say about RE4.Six years after the T-virus outbreak in Raccon city the returing survivior Leon Scott Kennedy now has a new mission.Save and protect the damesal in distress Ashely Graham from hordes of enimies. Now their are a few major changes in this game. For one the new over the shoulder shooting system replacing the traditional up,down, and foward system.Another change is the massive amounts of weapons and ammo you get in this game.In RE4 capcom dares you to fight the multitude of enimies and monstrosities in this game.Another change is the fact that you can stun enimies and kick or do a suplex which is a great way to conserve ammo. Now the AI is smart in this game they'll set up bear traps, chuck dynamite, set up tripwire explosives, and if youre distracted they'll try to take Ashely and if they do its game over for you and Ashelies only defense is calling Leon. The boss fights are even better you actually have to think out a straegy other than just point and shoot. Now for the bad.Well nothing bad is in this game.To put it simply RE4 is simply amazing and will satisfy your crave until RE5 comes out next year

What A Game - Review written on July 16, 2008

Wow, Resident Evil 4 sum's on in one word; Great. Why? Read on.

RE4 starts out with Leon pretty much explaining what happen after RE2; he joined a anti-Umbrella organization secretly run by the government to take Umbrella down, it was there that he was hired by the President himself to rescue Ashley Graham (the president's daughter).

The game takes place off the coast of Spain where he discovers that there is a HUGE cult following by Lord Saddler whose controls the villagers with a virus known as Las Plagas. Leon goes through the villages trying to find out if he can find Ashley, he does find her in a church on the outskirts of the village but it than confronted by Saddler whose main reason was kidnapping the President's daughter was to hold her hostage for a ransom to "keep the church running".
After finding Ashley, they try to get off the island alive (and once Ashley is with you, if she get's kidnapped the game is over and you pretty much have to start off from where from your last check point) but their plans get hijacked when their helicopter get's blown up by the villagers.
Leon and Ashley than meet Ramon Salazar in the castle they run into. Now this is where the game starts to get a little tough because ammo is kind of scarce (unless you beat the game along with the two mini-games than you have the Chicago Typewriter and the Rocket Launcher, more on that later) and some of the enemies are pretty hard to take down with just a regular pistol. So CONSERVE your ammo when in the castle, you're going to need it for later.
In the castle, it's there that you find out that Ashley and Leon have been injected with Las Plagas too, so now it's a race against time before the eggs hatch inside of them and they become one of "them".
As you get deeper into the castle, Ashley falls into one of their castle's MANY traps and now you have to rescue her, but once you do, you get to play as Ashley, but the down part is this; she has NO WEAPONS. None. So you have to use ween your way through the enemies (and trust me, playing Ashley is no walk in the park).
After rescuing Ashley, she again get's kidnapped and taken to an island (thanks to Salazar) and this is where you have to fight Salazar. The Salazar fight is kind of tricky because you just can't blow him up (he's protected by a shield), instead, you have to shoot an 'eye' in front of him and blow him away with whatever you got.

After defeating Salazar, you than head to the island for the final fight with Saddler (that's a little later in the island) but first, you have to go through some pretty hard baddies; one of them being a chain-gunning villager who is particularly not easy to just take down with a pistol (I like the magnum), but like the castle, this level is HARDER; why? Little or no ammo hanging around (and again, you're going to need it) for you to grab.
After going through the island, you than face a "repeater"; it say's it in the name; you shoot off one of the arms, it grows back. The trick to kill this baddie is to kill the Las Plagas in his body (using the sniper rifle) with a custom scope you find in one of the labs.

As you get closer to Saddler, you run into an old "friend" of Leon's: Jack Krauser. Except this is in a cut scene and one thing about the cut scene is RE4 is that you HAVE to react by pressing the right button at the right time. In this scene, it's a knife fight with Krauser and this is one of the HARDEST part's of the game because you have to pay special attention to which button to press.
After that is said and done (thanks to Ada who is also in the game, but she is there for another purpose), you move again and get Ashley back, but she get's kidnapped (again). You than have to fight Krauser before you get Ashley back (because he has Ashley locked in a cell by him) and fighting Krauser is not easy because he turns his arm into a deadly wing and can easily kill you in two hits! So be careful. I recommend using the Magnum against him (15 or 20 shot's should have him done in) but you don't kill him, he use's a smoke bomb to disappear into thin air.
After rescuing Ashely (for the final time), you finally run into Saddler and kill him with a rocket launcher Ada gives you. After blowing him up, you have to get off the island alive using a jet ski and go home.

Now, just playing RE4 one time is not enough; once you beat the game you get the rocket launcher with infinite ammo that can be used in the main-game, and professional mode (which the enemies take more hits, and you get less ammo, good luck because you're going to need it but after beating Professional Mode, you get the hand-cannon which kills the Las Plagas in the body of your enemies) but also the side-games like Assignment Ada (after beating this, you get the Chicago Typewriter for the main game) and the Mercenaries game where you basically try to kill all of the villagers in a amount of time, and if you do you get to play as Albert Wesker, Jack Krauser, Hunk, and Ada Wong.

If you are looking for a game that (I think) is the best RE in the series thus far, look no further than RE4.

I am going to keep this short and sweet. The gameplay is realistic enough and fun, you can't move and shoot but no biggie cuz most of your opponents move slow when they are close. The weapon selection is great, the difficulty is challenging but ridiculous, the story line is cheesy as F#$k but once again who cares when you can blow a guys head off...

This was an awsome game. This game was real fun, leon had to find ashley thorugh the horrific mission he was in. As the story continued he had to battle not zombies but people with viruses, he had to fight he's way through a creepy yet thrilling mission to find ashley. When i first played this game it was great from the begining, it starts of with leon driveing a car with 2police men then they let leon out and leon explored the woods thinking he was not alone, he went inside a house a found a man that wanted to kill him but that did'nt happen. The 2police officers were being attacked by the people with viruses then there car crashed in the water, leon went outside to wonder what was going on then the people with the viruses was trying to attack him but luckly he had a gun. He then walked over to where the crash was and he found the car but the 2police men were not in it either he was thinking they were flushed away by the water or the people took them. Continueing the story he was walking he's way out the woods but more of the people came and wanted to kill him but leon was loaded with action and got through in anything that stood in he's way, he then came out the woods and founded the 2police officers hanging on a branch burning, then he new their was shelters around him with the people with the viruses in them, then a chainsaw guy came in the party but leon fought he's way through him to. He went inside a shelter and pushed something to hold the door then he ran upstairs then found a shotgun a grenads the people used the latters to get upstairs were he was but he jumped out the window and was waiting for them to show, killing one by one on the roof, after he got passed that part he went to a door and saw a symbol hole, the could'nt open without the symbol in place of the door so he had to find a way to get the symbol. He saw a door he did'nt no was there then opened it and he was in a farm and fought he's way through to get passed then he opened another door and he was in a graveyard and the people with the viruses were there to. Their was a symbol on the door like the other one but different shape, so he walked over the brige and the people were their trying to attack him but he got passed, he opened a door and the people relesed a big ugly monster to kill leon that part was fun. Leon was shooting the monster then a dog came and distracted the monster giving leon the chance for advantege to attack withoutthe monster seeing him. Their's more but this was a great fun game.
The biggest bait and switch in horror gaming history - Review written on May 12, 2008

Basically if you liked Resident Evil Dead Aim, Code Veronica and any of the movies that were out in theaters, then you're in for a REALLY big treat because Resident Evil 4 is everything those games proffered in being loud, dumb and obnoxious action-packed thrillers with amazingly stupid dialogue (stupider than the first game's dialogue), embarrassingly weak plots (weaker than the original game's plots) and being virtually devoid of atmosphere, pacing, even shock factors. God help you if you played the original games and liked them for their atmosphere, decent characters and adventuring aspects of game play because to you the huge glossy four on this game (that surprisingly comes before the title) will feel like the biggest bait and switch in the history of horror gaming.

Do I even REALLY need to explain how stupid this game is? I understand what Capcom was trying: they thought that a new, smarter enemy would be a lot scarier and in theory they would be, but they seemed to forgot that adding a bunch of BS action-packed attacks to the hero cuts down atmosphere faster than a lawn-mower to grass. Would you be terrified of a group of people you could decapitate almost immediately with a single round-house kick to the head? Would you be scared of possessing the ability to toss big, heavy combat knives effectively and always hit your target? Would you be shivering if you somehow possessed the ability to jump off of thirty/forty foot ledges, land on your own two feet and NEVER GET HURT?? What the Hell!! How could any of this qualify as horror?

Capcom basically took Leon from the second game and turned him into a Devil May Cry character! And his change in attitude doesn't make any sense, either: how can a well-grounded, mature young man lose so many brain cells that he practically regresses to an angsty middle-school student in a manner of six years? Does a man become more mature by the amount of curse words or smugly witty commentary he spouts?

I used to love Ada Wong from Resident Evil 2 because there was something interesting about her whole situation and you actually started learning a little bit about her... there was something human about her then. Well, there certainly isn't now! Not only did they change her character, they turned Ada into an action-packed, back-flipping, bullet-timed super woman in quite possibly the most laughable and offensive spy get-up I've ever seen in any visual media.

And how about that 100% Hollywood, back alley garbage plot? European terrorists? A plot against the president's daughter? Some completely unknown, unheard of bacteriological entity that just appeared out of nowhere and has absolutely nothing to do with Umbrella? Oh no!

Everyone compliments the game play, but all it really comes down to is a rip-off of Splinter Cell used in a completely inappropriate situation. The reason why the over-the-shoulder zoom worked in Splinter Cell was because you didn't have to constantly worry about people crawling on screen at all sides while you're trying to sharp shoot. Oh yeah, and how about those Quick Time Events, eh? Since when was mashing buttons scary? Quick Time Events aren't even FUN! They're obnoxious little mini-games tied into the game's cinematic moments (particularly in moments where you'll probably end up shouting "Oh now what" instead of admitting fearfulness) made to keep you from sitting back like you usually do so you can watch helplessly as your character performs so many hyperactive super moves according to random buttons they might as well be dancers in a Merce Cunningham production on the surface of Titan hooked up to electrodes.

The moments the game even remembers it wants to be a horror game run few and far between: all the game has in its favor is an inexplicable water-boss and naked, seven foot, sniffling, nose-less zombies that look like they were designed in about a minute. That's it. The rest of the time you'll be gunning down crazy people (NOT zombies), manga villains and guarding a prostitute.

Look, I can see why most people venerate this game as a good action game (which is why I give it a 2 for fun), but really, trying to find the game scary, terrifying or worth more than a rental is pointless.

Great game. The beginning is a little rough but once you get used to the controls everything is fair. Wish the controls were more along the lines of God of War but i guess that'd make this a different type of game. Corny story, but well designed and fun game. Go read any magazine review and you'll see it's hard to find much written about this game that is bad.
A Highly Effective - But Not Too Radical - Change in Direction For Resident Evil - Review written on April 17, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5

Resident Evil 4 - which is actually somthing like the 15th game under the Resident Evil banner, but the fourth of what are considered the 'main' games - takes a definate turn away from its predecessors but manages to keep itself firmly within the established action-horror mode of the rest of the series. Rather than a new outbreak of T-virus-spawned undead, the zombies are actually absent entirely this time around, and familiar trademarks like Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation get brief mention. The new enemy is spawned by a parasitic lifeform called Las Plagas, and though similar to the zombies in ways, is smarter and capable of mutating into progressively more inhuman forms as the game progresses.

The setting for the game is that a college-aged girl named Ashley, daughter of the US president, has been kidnapped by a mysterious group called Los Illuminados. The player takes on the role of Special Agent Leon Kennedy (who was in previous RE games), who's dispatched to a remote corner of an unnamed European country to follow up on a lead. Following an attack at a small rural farmstead, in which assailants murder the two local policemen assigned to assist in the case, Leon, communicating with the US through a radio commlink, finds himself fighting his way through the forest towards more clues as to what's going on.

The chief enemies, the ones that there are swarms of, are called Ganados, and are inhabitants of the countryside who've been infected with the parasites. They fill the role of the zombies from the other games, attacking en masse, but smarter and working together. Initially looking human, they use weapons like pitchforks, torches and chainsaws, but, on an individual basis, are clumsy and awkward (although capable of running). More horrific Plaga-infected enemies are encountered later on, some of them mindless monstrosities and others talking, thinking members of the Los Illuminados hierarchy. The games progresses through little villages, a large quarry, castle settings, a deadly lake, and other such locales. Allies are encountered but you generally don't get to play as them. The exception is Ashley herself, who becomes the playable character a couple of times. The game winds through a cool progression of battle scenarios, sinister envirornments, puzzling out secrets and discovering the history and intentions of Los Illuminados and the Las Plagas. The Las Plagas themselves turn out more interesting than one might think, for what, at first, seems to be just a microscopic parasite wielded by a shadowy organization to create an obediant army. Very good story unfolding, although I personally found the finale, in some ways, a bit anticlimatic (although the as-the-end-credits-roll glimpse back at the village, very peaceful and idyllic before the parasites arrived, adds a potent touch).

There are the usual kind of flaws in reasoning that you often get in games like this, that would be terrible flaws in a movie or book but aren't as bad in a video game, i.e. the character can carry around an absurd amount of weapons and supplies without being visibly loaded down; you can be almost killed by terrible injuries but healed instantly by a first-aid spray, etc. These really make no sense and are just put in to make a game more fun. You could have the character just carry a single gun and quite a large ammount of ammo and it would be far more realistic, but it's more interesting to be able to have your character switch between pistol, uzi, shotgun, mine-thrower, etc. as the situation calls for it. Some games have found ways around the flaws in logic by making the healing items magical and thus more potent, by letting the character only carry a smaller amount of stuff but letting him/her build up a stockpile of it in a location that can be accessed frequently (such as shifting items back and forth between the 'normal' world and its 'nightmarish world' counterpart like Silent Hill 4: The Room did), others just let it go like Res. Evil 4 does. In most ways, I, and probably a lot of other players, like for a game like the Resident Evils to try and be plausible, but the things like 'how much can the character carry' just don't do that much harm to the game even when they're not believable (now it would get really annoying if the Resident Evil Movies let characters each carry an arsenal on their backs and in their pockets). The prescence of the arms dealer, roaming at will through the game without the Los Illuminados seeming to mind, is also rather unrealistic, but there he is, waiting for you to buy weapons and sell treasures you've uncovered.

Once beating the game once, you unlock bonuses, including three separate mini-games. In two of these, you play as Ada Wong, off on her own missions through Illuminado territory; one of them shows how certain unexplained events in the main game unfold, although it's a question of individual preference whether these should have been explained or left as mysteries. In the third, you start off with Leon and proceed to unlock 4 other characters, who you can send on timed missions where you just try to rack up points by wiping out as many enemies as you can before your evac chopper arrives; there are 4 different locales to be played through in this one and its non-story, points-oriented style is a nice contrast to the rest of the game.

Good graphics, good gameplay, a nice playing length where you don't end up running through the whole thing in way too short a time, and better voice acting than some of the other (primarily early) games in the series all add up to help make this one nice package. Reccommended for all fans of horror video games and high firepower, high carnage action games.

This is, by far, the worst Resident Evil game in the series. Fighting a village full of crazies to save the president's daughter has WHAT, exactly, to do with zombies or survival horror? Fighting a big fish in a row boat? Yeah, that's real "scary". RE4 has managed to completely remove the horror element from "survival horror". And it's looking like it's going to be the same with RE5. Epic fail. Save your money or buy something from the Fatal Frame series.

I must say that I stopped playing this series after Nemesis because the games just became too confusing for me. I bought this one on a lark, and I am completely HOOKED!! The graphics are great, the controls are very simple, and although you may need the manual to complete the game (I did), you can figure a lot out by yourself.

What I liked about this is the fresh approach to the series. You are not hounded by slow-moving goblins, ghoulies, and zombies, but real people who are mind controlled and can turn VERY sadistic. In keeping in tune with the rest of the series, you are warned about "graphic violence, gore, and language." I'm thinking that's a bit too much. This is CARTOON violence at best because these are CARTOON people. This ain't real folks; stop making a mountain out of a molehill.

Pure entertainment; I enjoyed this one tremendously!!

I won't go on and on about how fantastic this game is. There are P'lenty of reviews screaming and singing it's praises. You can judge for yourself and with the "used" copies being as affordable as they are, you'd be making a mistake to pass up buying a copy for your collection. This game sets a new standard for the RE series and one I was simply blown away from. The storyline and zombies/monsters are far more complex. They move differently. They run right up to you so you have to have even better/faster reflexes. This is a long game which I very much enjoyed and may I dare say it's my all time favorite. Just when I thought the game was over, there is more to play as a different character at the end!!! BONUS! I picked this game up for twenty bucks and it was worth every penny. I hate paying full price for a video game (rarely ever do) but this is one that I would have dropped 50-60 bucks because it's just that dang good! I'll be excited to play the newest PS3 version this summer.

One of the most amazing games I've ever played. The gameplay is terrific and the graphics and sound are also great. I was kind of afraid to even get started with this game because I remember watching a friend playing it and being terrified of the villagers and the atmosphere overall. It's quite an engrossing game and the experience is quite visceral once you start to get overwhelmed or surprised by the enemy that presents itself... Recommended for any game who's looking for an exciting and thrilling gaming experience.

Resident Evil 4 was my first foray into the Resident Evil Universe. The characters and storyline, while not totally unfamiliar were for the most part entirely new to me. But this lack of previous history did not detract one bit from the experience.

From the moment you emerge from the Police Vehicle until you escape at the end, I felt like I was on one fanastic "shooter" ride. The atmosphere and detail of the surrounding is first rate. Sounds are used to great effect both in scarying you as well as your first line of defense. The puzzles are straightforward enough that guys like me could figure them out in less than 50 tries and added to the overall enjoyment of the game.

The additional characters were interesting and added some good spice to the story. And getting to play the President's daughter sans weapons was a nice touch. The fighting in this game is intense. There are traps galore and the female zombies with the chainsaws....good grief they are fast and deadly. The mine car ride and fight has to be one of the most thrilling I have ever experienced in a game.

And perhaps the best aspect of this game has to be it's depth. It goes on and on and on. In fact, there were points, where I was just exhausted. Some of the major fights came so rapidly one after the next, that I just wanted 5 minutes of just walking around in order to rest.

Overall, a really rich and exciting game that held my interest and kept coming back each night.

So lock and load and be sure to mix your plants before you get hit!

It seems like most games last only about 5-12 hours on Xbox 360 and PS3 and they cost three times as much as this game. Of course, length isn't the only reason to buy this game but it's the fact that not only is it so long but every minute is oozing quality that makes it an absolute must buy for PS2 owners. I really like that fact that it's challenging but never too hard. For those who want to pull their hair out you can try it on harder settings but I found the normal setting just right. I wish they had a bit more back story since I've never played other Resident Evil games but it's still one of the best games I've played.

In RESIDENT EVIL 4, Leon Kennedy, the main character of RESIDENT EVIL 2, returns. Leon is now a special agent of the U.S. government. The President of the U.S. has had his daughter, Ashley, kidnapped and Leon is sent to rescue her. Her location has been determined to be in a small, remote European village. Leon is dropped off at the location by two police officers. Leon attempts to communicate with the locals but they try to kill him. Leon survives the initial encounter, but the police officers who dropped him off meet a fate far worse. It turns out that the local citizens, ganados (which is Spanish I believe for cattle), have been infected with an alien parasite. Once infected the parasite eventually kills the person and takes over the body and those who are controlled by the parasites are under the command of certain "leaders". The leaders of the ganados cult have very big plans for world domination and Ashley is an important key in those plans. So Leon sets forth killing the villagers as he first finds and rescues Ashley. It turns out that he and Ashley have both been infected with the parasite and before they can escape they have to find a cure.

The game is pretty exciting and takes between 25-30 hours to complete for an average player. It also has a lot of replay value. Most of the time you play as Leon, but sometimes the player plays as Ashley and there are a few instances where both characters must work together. Out of all the weapons in the main game, I preferred to use the shotgun for close range fighting though Leon also has a knife which I would recommend, in order to save ammo, using for close range fighting with just one enemy. Enemies aren't completely mindless in the game and reveal some intelligence, such as dodging attacks, carrying shields, and joint attacks from different fronts. In my opinion besides some of the bosses the most difficult and frightening characters to fight where the chainsaw ganados. Those things just freaked me out and it is worse hearing the chainsaws but not seeing where those particular enemies are. Every time I heard that chainsaw noise while playing the game it gave me the creeps.

The graphics are pretty decent, but it was the music which I found most haunting. There were many times when Leon would commit a certain action and this haunting music would begin that gave me goosebumps because I knew some enemy was going to appear and sometimes they would just appear out of nowhere. Something different from many other games is that you can't always relax during cutscenes. Sometimes you have to perform actions that appear on the screen or Leon dies.

Upon beating the game, several extra features are unlocked including different costumes for Leon and Ashley; a shooting mini-game entitled mercenaries where you can unlock up to five different players; a separate mini-story line entitled "Separate Ways" where you play as Ada Wong and learn more secrets that weren't revealed in the game; another mini-game entitled "Assignment Ada" where you play once again as Ada, but on a different assignment than the one in the main game; a movie browser where you can watch all of the cut scenes from both the main game and "Separate Ways"; and a list of Ada's files from "Separate Ways".

A very entertaining game that is a nice addition to the Resident Evil franchise, even if there aren't any zombies.

The whole behind the back camera angle is a very cool feature, the game is nicely paced with not too hard enemies. Use of the laser is cool but a bit annoying at times due to the fact that the game was made with as much realism as possible meaning the character's hard tends to shake. That was my only problem with this game, otherwise, it's wonderful if you are looking for a nice horror game. But if i were to class this with other versions of RE4 i would say the Wii Edition is the best BUT this is a PS2 review sooooo.... 8.5 out of 10 n_n

It's true, this game has over-shadowed every ACTUAL good game for the past 3 years. This game may very well have the most cliche'd storyline ever conceived for a game. And not to mention the dozens, upon dozens of stereotypes. And as far as realism, this game has none. Feel free to look at some of the outrageous stunts on Youtube, or Google. I really don't see what all the hype is for.

Too bad Capcom threw away all credibility they used to have. And didn't Shinji himself say that if this game appears on anything other than the Gamecube he'd cut his own head off? Shows how much intergrity they have left. Gone are the days of quality games, and in are the days of "chasing the all mighty dollar" Capcom has "soldout" and from the looks of things, every future title will be a carbon-copy of RE4. Too bad.

I gave the game the benefit of the doubt, and gave it a a four star rating, just so the RE4 fanboys wouldn't harrass me with their nonsencial mumbo jumbo.

Buy Metal Gear Solid 3 instead, unlike this, it isn't vastly overrated, it's quite the opposite, actually. If you INSIST on buying this, just be sure to turn your brain off while playing it.

The fourth installment of Capcom's pivotal "Survival Horror" series continues on Nintendo GameCube and PS2. The title takes place in 2004 some six years after the events that transpired in Resident Evil 2. The government has destroyed the Umbrella Corporation, which has been behind just about every plot and disgusting bio-chemical mutation in the survival horror series. Now-US agent Leon Kennedy (of Resident Evil 2 fame) has been dispatched to Europe to save the President's daughter from "crazed organizations." RE4 boasts some of the most impressive visuals to date on Nintendo's next generation console, and takes the series into the realm of truly three-dimensional gameplay. Stagnant environments found in previous Resident Evil games are replaced by detailed 3D surroundings complete with dynamic camera work.

So if want to new school scary game with a more user friendly combat system this game is for you.

I have always been facinated by the Resident Evil genre. However, I've always been a big chicken when it comes to playing their games. While I'm not a diehard fan like some, I have played the original for the PSone as well as a demo of RE3: Nemesis which came with Dino Crisis, another Capcom game, for the PSone.

I put a lot of thought into whether or not I should purchase this game or pass it up. Considering that I like the franchise in general, part of me wanted it, but I didn't want the same thing to happen to me that happened the first time I rented the original: Play it five minutes, get freaked out and shut it off for the remaining five days I had it.

However, the numerous good reviews I'd heard about this game were making it too hard to ignore. I picked up a copy for $20 and started playing. The truth is that it did take me a little while to actually like this game. I was about ready to go onto a RE discussion forum and ask when I should be getting into it.

Well, I didn't have to do that as eventually the heart-pounding, adrenaline-rush of action overpowered my initial fear and boredom to the point that I just wanted to kick the living crap outta every enemy I encountered. This game does stray from its survival-horror roots and becomes more of an action-horror game.

The game is incredibly long - a lot longer then I thought it would be. It took me nearly 30 hours my first time to complete the game. The replay value is extremely high, too. Capcom is known for having good replay value for their games and RE4 is no exception.

Upon completion of the game, you unlock another difficulty level, new weapons (some with unlimited ammo), two mini games and a third longer mini game where you play as another character that gets played out simultaneously to the main game.

Surprisingly, it has become one of the best games I have ever played and it is no wonder why it achieved all its high ratings and awards. Players should be warned that the game is extremely violent, rightly deserving its M rating.

Interactive cut-scenes add to the unpredictability as you can no longer simply put down your controller and watch. You may be required to do a series of button presses to prolong your life. Enemy AI is great, too. Enemies dodge your attacks, wield weapons, throw projectiles, carry shields and coordinate attacks.

Here's the lowdown on the basics:

Graphics - One word: Stunning, especially near the start of the game in the village. You'll truly be glad you aren't in such a desolate, wooded location. The loneliness and isolation of the first few areas makes you truly appreciate what you do have. But as the game progresses, you'll be wishing for the villagers rather then facing some of the more powerful enemies later on, some of which can scare ya just by looking at them.

Sound - Not as good as the graphics but still eerily satisfying. The howling wind in the village will give you chills and the heavy breathing of enemies lets you know their presence but being unable to locate them will cause you to turn in circles until you think the coast is clear. The music, especially in Ada's "Separate Ways" mini-game is powerful and gives you a little adrenaline boost. It's not "scary" powerful, but more like "emotional" powerful.

Replay value - High. Very, very high. With an added difficulty setting, many mini games and new weapons to test out, Capcom truly wants you to be playing this game nonstop until you have it implanted in your memory.

I was slightly nervous upon playing it for the first time and while there are those moments of fright within the game, the action and pulse-pounding adrenaline keep you going until you wear out your controller.

The game is all it was touted to be, and different than some of its predecessors. I still haven't finished it, but then I take my time to finish a game, as I don't want to run through it and then have to buy another.

Resident Evil has seen many highs and lows in the years since its' debut on the Playstation in 1996. I, personally, lost interest in the series after RE3:Nemesis. While I played RE: Code Veronica X, it just seemed to me it was the same ol' same ol' all over again. So, I went with Silent Hill for awhile because of its' fresh approach to survival horror. Sadly, it, too, began to regurgitate the same ol' formula with it's PS2 games so I gave up on games of this nature altogether. So, recently, my nephew comes over to play videogames with me and brings his copy of Resident Evil 4. Leaving it behind when he leaves to go home, I find it and decide to take a look at the game. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised when I got sucked into the game and played for hours on end. See, with this installment of Resident Evil, the series goes into a bold new direction with a greater emphasis on the story. If you're wondering how, all I can say is to check it out.

The story itself has Leon Kennedy(whom RE Vets will remember from RE2) searching for the President's daughter in a remote European village where she was supposedly spotted. Yet, instead of facing zombies like in previous Resident Evil games, Leon faces a threat far greater than that. A threat that is genuinely creepy and very unsettling.

While many of you know this game was originally released on the Nintendo Gamecube, it was successfully ported over to the Playstation 2 with several new extras(such as Ada Wong's Separate Ways sidestory, new outfits & whatnot). Very little was sacrificed in the making of this game and it shows. The game looks absolutely stunning(measuring up to the graphical style of Silent Hill and then some) and the gameplay is as perfect as it can be. Resident Evil 4 is a fine return to form as the leading Survival Horror game on the Playstation 2. I highly recommend you play this game.

For me, I'm gone....out to buy Resident Evil 4. Later you all.

Keeping this review short and sweet. I dont personally believe that this was the best resident evil due to the fact that the monsters werent so creative which took the whole UNDEAD fealing away from the game. IT MADE ME FEEL MORE LIKE I WAS PLAYING METAL GEAR SOLID or something and not a survial horror. COULD HAVE DONE BETTER>
