My son really uses the functions of this watch. Easy to understand operation and accurate. He does a lot of driving in unfamiliar areas so uses the compass frequently. This is a fun watch for the outsider.

This has been a good watch for me. I ve owned it about a year and it has taken a good beating and survived.

The features (timer, chronograph, compass, and alarm) are easy to use once you learn how.

On the downside the strap has detached a couple of times and I have nearly lost my watch. The compass needs perdoic calibration (which is easy) but I would not think of hiking cross country with this compass.

One watch I would take with me in the field as a photographer. Very useful functions and alot of them. Very light and rugged. Like they say "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking"

Nice Watch, poor compass - Review written on January 29, 2008

I liked the watch, but found that the compass only worked for the first day or two. After that it only seems to show an easterly direction. I nearly got lost in the woods, assuming that it was registering the proper direction.

I'm sending it back for work. If it comes back repaired, I'll be happy to use it. Until then, I can't give it a good recommendation.

Nice watch for the money. I purchased mainly for the compass but I still need to calibrate it. It was probably set up for the west coast.

It seems to be Water-Proof. I shower with it after work daily, and the watch works fine. The straps take about two (2) hours to dry out. The features and functions do what they claim to do.

I have this watch for about a month. I'm happy with it so far.

Purchased as a gift for its features. My experience with Timex over the years made this timepiece the logical choice. The friend was totally satisfied!

"This is John Cameron Swazey here in North Vietnam. We're just about to tie a Timex watch to Phan Lun Duc, a Vietnamese infiltrator whose just about to go down the Hue Trail. Good Luck Phan baby. Six months later..There's the dead body of Phan Lun. Notice though, the Timex is still working." The quality of this watch does not match up to its Timex reputation. The band is of poor quality and so is the crystal. It cracks very easily. You can't go near anything without having to calibrate the compass. Was not impressed with the overall quality at all. It would never last on the Appalachian Trail that for sure. Swazey's rolling in his grave right now. This is a child's playtime watch.

I've had this watch for a month or so now and was very excited to get it. I had 3 Timex Internet Messenger watches which slowly died over th 8 or so years I had them. This watch looks nice and does the basics well. I agree with other reviewers the directions are hard to understand and you have to fumble through some of the functions to figure them out. But the biggest problem is that the compass function never seems to work right. I have re-calibrated the watch numerous times and can never get it to reliably hold proper north orientation. I chose it for this feature but would never rely on it in the woods, that's for sure. Magnetic fields can confuse it, requiring re-calibration but if that is what is throwing it off it is overly sensitive and not worth the extra money spent. I should send it back to Timex , but I'm one of those people that hate all the hassle of calling, sending, waiting and for what?.. a $40.00 item that should have worked right in the first place. I will continue to wear it as it looks OK but it's doesn't live up to the Timex name and for the purpose for which it was sold.

I've had this watch for 7 years now and overall it is decent. The straps do not last long especially when they get wet frequently. I've gone through 3 or 4 bands already. Battery is still fine. The compass frequently loses its calibration and requires you to pull the cover off the back to do a reset of the watch. But when it is working, it works well, even underwater.

The watch is digital and is priced moderately for all its features. I acually gifted this watch to my friend on his birthday and he just loved it. I think its a great watch and will stay with him for quite a long time.. :)

Timex Men's Outdoor Performance Digital Compass Expedition Watch #T77862 I wanted an inexpensive watch to tell me direction when I got lost on the motorcycle. This watch does the trick. Although I can't steer the bike and get a heading at the same time it serves the purpose. Easy to read display most of the time (except in somewhat dim lighting). The band is very comfortable and I don't know I have it on most of the time. Great watch, great price. I'd buy again.

I like my new Watch. I live in MN and get a signal every night. Things I would change. I would make the date available in other time zone modes. The date that the watch used to last update shows in the bottom window and that can cause confusion for travelers like myself.

It is really a good watch with solid features, however, it is a bit large for those who might not want something like that on their wrist.

This is my second one. The first one got kind of beat up during yard work, etc. The compass function gets a little funky when the battery gets older. Nice band, although the leather in it may not last forever.

Great watch. I just bought my second one after the velcro band lost its grip. I thought that I was ordering the same watch with the same band, but it came with a regular band (not velcro). Otherwise, it's a good watch.
Watch is great, instructions are abominable - Review written on May 19, 2006

I bought this watch last night and very easily set up the time of day settings per the instructions, which referred to buttons numerically. Today when I went to set up the compass I very carefully read the instructions and quickly became irritated as they referred to settings such as "Heading" and "Start" which were not identified on the instruction sheet.

After seeking answers on the Timex site and finding none, I called Timex. The lady was exceptionally nice and helpful, telling me that the button settings are identified inside the dial. They are, but initially to me they appeared as a dark blue design, and with strong light and magnification, did indeed see that they were indicated as "Heading" and "Start", etc, but in type so miniscule you'll need a microscope to read them!

The watch deserves four stars, but the incredibly inept and lousy instruction sheet drops it to three. With a bit more attention to detail and the omission of the French and Spanish instruction versions, perhaps Timex will sell more watches. The nickel they saved printing 3 in 1 language instructions isn't much compared to the bad press they'll get from this review.

There are a number of Timex watches that are far more intuitive to use. These other newer watches don't require directions for use. As an example, the 77862 has no reset feature for the Timer. What? I can't reset it? That's correct! To get it back to 1 minute, you have to manually toggle through the minutes up to 99 minutes in order to get it back to 1 minute. Stupid, huh?

The indiglo light should stay on for 3 seconds when ever the indiglo button is pressed, but again this is not the case. You must hold this button down in order to keep the light on. Other Timex watches have the 3-second On feature but not this one. Ok, how about having plus and minus buttons for setting stuff. Nope, not this model, but other Timex models have this feature. And, this is a very nice feature on other Timex watches.

Not to say I hate this watch, but I'm getting there. It is very accurate and the band is far more comfortable then the rubber/plastic types.
