Beautiful, elegant, helpful for shot-tweaking, a bit fragile - Review written on January 28, 2008

I am really delighted by these glasses, which replace my traditional porcelain espresso cups. Now I can see the color of my shot and how much crema I produce, and can more effectively adjust my tamp pressure, grind, or duration of brewing. I also just think a shot of espresso, like a pint of stout beer, is a thing of beauty, and I don't agree with my self-righteous, snot-nosed husband who says the only thing that matters about a shot is how it tastes (he thinks I'm the snob, because I care about the aesthetics). Taste is obviously the main thrust, but the the visual cues of how the shot will probably taste (the depth, texture and color of the crema as well as the color and density of the brew underneath the crema) are practically as rewarding to me as the actual taste. I've had espresso glasses before but never with a curved bottom, and I'm not interested enough to explore the physics in any kind of depth but the curvature does inform my shot for the better (more crema). Maybe I'm tripping but I don't think so and I'm not willing to bone up on this to confirm it other than through ocular proof. Come on, these glasses are just beautiful, and the suspension effect also packs a wallop. One thing, as others have noted, is that the glasses are pretty light-weight and thus fragile, but I haven't found them absurdly fragile or anything. No leaking or micro-cracks thus far. They seem to retain the heat of the drink to my satisfaction and they aren't prohibitively hot to handle. Perfect balance of form and function. Thanks Bodum!

It's been about a little over a month since I purchased a sizable quantity of these glass for home everyday use (assorted sizes, 24 count total), and two glasses have spontaneously cracked on us. Other than using them for everyday-use, we have been very careful with them - they've been washed with a soft sponge, we have a designated space in the cabinet to store them (not stacked), etc. These glasses are just not cut out for everyday use. We have been using the glasses to drink warm (hot chocolate) and cold drinks (iced beverage). Both broken glasses spontaneously cracked at the bottom while it was sitting on the desk holding a drink. At first, I thought someone had accidentally slammed it, but I actually witnessed the spontaneous cracking when the second glass broke.
I am very disappointed with the functionality of the product. I'm a sucker for good designs, but I expect a reasonable level of durability. These glasses have been incredibly sub standard - my cheap ikea glasses I bought for $5/dozen have fared better. Maybe these glasses are meant to be put away in some display case, only to be used for special occasions... but what's the point of buying glasses if you are not going to use them?
