Dudley Moore fans will be SORELY disappointed.... - Review written on August 25, 2007
Rating: 1 out of 5
I don't know how this movie got under my Dudley Moore radar. I am a fan of all His work going back to "Beyond The Fringe", and I never saw this movie until now. I'm not so much disappointed in Dudley Moore, but the writer and director. What an embarassment to this great comedic actor! Why they couldn't have written a better part for this man is the question[why Dudley accepted the role is another]. My guess is that He was too nice of a guy-which Dudley was-to walk off the project. Ridiculous[and UN-FUNNY]lines they have Him say and His supporting cast is the worst[or at least their parts were written/directed terribly also]. This looks like a role that the younger Dudley Moore may have had, like his role in Alice in wonderland-20 years earlier, but not after Dudley had risen to the heights he had["Foul Play","10", "Arthur",etc.]. I truly wish I had not seen this film. I found it to be degrading to a comedic actor of Dudley Moore's caliber. God Bless Him for being a nice guy and agreeing to be part of this lame and WEIRD version of the Santa Clause story. To me, it would be like an Ex-President being asked to take a job as a small town Mayor-BENEATH HIM. My young niece and nephew DID NOT enjoy it either. They called it "weird" and "boring". Not for adults or children and certainly not for people only wanting to see Dudley Moore. They will be disappointed, as I was. R.I.P. Dudley Moore and Thanks for the laughs[in other movies]!

If you wish to embark upon a journey of pure Christmas magic, please DON'T believe a word of the few negative reviews of this movie posted here. Instead, BELIEVE in the plethora of glowingly positive reviews here, and rush to order this DVD (preferably the wide-screen version if you can find it)! This movie is a sheer joy and a true classic for the whole family! I discovered this film as a 36-year-old, when my beloved mom and I watched it on TV together a few years after it came out. We both adored it from the start!
Everyone in the family will delight in the first 45 minutes of the film, which re-tell the legend of St. Nicholas and how Santa Claus came to be. David Huddleston and Judy Cornwell, the actors who play Santa and Mrs. Claus, respectively, are the total embodiment of the warm, wonderful Santa and Mrs. Claus of my heart and imagination! The depictions of the far-away, wintry North Pole--the elves with their various personalities, the amazing toy factory, the magical flying reindeer, and everything else--are the stuff of my eternal-inner-child dreams!
The film then moves from the times of legend to the present. Two subplots that eventually intertwine constitute the rest of the film: a rather touching story involving a starving, homeless boy and the well-to-do little girl who helps and befriends him, and the other subplot, involving a renegade elf (played by Dudley Moore) and a comically villainous toy mogul (played by John Lithgow), who wants to exploit him. While all is told in a way that youngsters will find truly entertaining, older children and adults will also find meaningful (but not preachy) observations on everything from the crass commercialism that has seemingly overwhelmed Christmas (at least in the U.S.A.), to the decline of workmanship and quality, to the true meaning of charity, compassion, and kindness--and yes, even forgiveness.
In short, it's a winner, and I predict you and yours will enjoy this movie together as a family tradition-of-the-season for years and years to come!
An Unrecognized Classic - Review written on December 17, 2005

"Santa Claus, The Movie" is a film that my family and I watch every year at Christmas. As time goes on, I am sure it will be recognized as one of the all-time classic yuletide movies. As a Child of the 80's, this movie holds a special place in my heart, and only the presence of the superb "One Magic Christmas" (both from 1985) prevents me from giving "Santa Claus" 5 stars.
The late Dudley Moore plays the elf Patch in "Santa Claus", a sort of brilliant renegade inventor trying to become Kris Kringle's apprentice. John Lithgow overacts (wonderfully) as B.Z., the evil toy company owner who is out to use Patch's naivete (and magic powers) to take over Christmas and put Santa - who he considers competition - out of business.
The most magical scenes in the movie, however, take place at the beginning, as a mortal Claus discovers he is the Chosen One, meets the elves, and discovers what his role is going to be down through the centuries. The first flight of his sled is amazing, and the lack of fancy CGI animation is strangely welcome.
This movie has been ignored, basically because it belongs to a generation who has not yet come into its own culturally. The dominant movies are still "It's A Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Story". But, as people who grew up with those classics age, a new crop of movies will be fondly remembered. When that time comes, I am certain "Santa Claus, the Movie" and "One Magic Christmas" will be recognized as two of the best seasonal movies of all time.
This 20th-anniversary edition of "Santa Claus" may be the first step. Do yourself a favor and order it from Amazon at its very reasonable price, and make up your own mind.
