Another Gift Set Coming Soon! - Review written on September 14, 2005
Rating: 5 out of 5
Loved my first Gift Set, which included Seasons 1-3 of the series! I can't wait for November 22, 2005: Sony is releasing the second Gift Pack, which will include Season 5 and 6 (also available as separate seasons).
[...]
Gift set will include:
* Complete Seasons 5, and 6 on Region 1 DVD
* An Exclusive Replica of the "Puffy Shirt" that Jerry wore on The Tonight Show.
* Reproduction of a hand-written script from "The Pilot" (Episodes 4.23/4.24) by Jerry Seinfeld
Seasons 5 and 6 include some of the most hilarious episodes of the entire series:
The Puffy Shirt
The Bris
The Lip Reader
The Non Fat Yogurt
The Masseuse
The Big Salad
The Label Maker
The Fusilli Jerry
And many more. I would have a hard time picking a "favorite season", so I won't do so, but I will say I'm counting off the days until November 22, and I hope Amazon updates their information soon regarding Season 5 and 6 soon. (They currently state there are no plans for the DVD release, but rest assured, it IS coming out in November, [...]);
The box set is only a gimmick. Save your money and buy the DVDs individually - Review written on June 27, 2005

Please note: I am giving a 1-star rating to the overall "Seinfeld Limited Edition Gift Set (Seasons 1-3 with Original Script, Salt & Pepper Shakers, and Playing Cards)." The episodes themselves are great 5-star affairs.
I just wanted to give a heads-up to prospective buyers that this box set is a bit of a letdown. The salt and pepper shakers are miniatures that stand about three inches tall, the so-called "original script" is a cheap miniature photocopy of a script (and is hardly legible), and as for it being signed, well, think again. It is not literally signed. What you really get is a photocopy of Larry David's signature on a small and useless photocopy of a script, with photocopies of illegible scribings by David throughout the script. If you want a signed script, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for one that is literally signed in-person and has a Certificate of Authenticity. And the playing cards are small and useless as well.
I know this box set is very attractive. Obviously, that's why I bought it myself. But it really is quite a disappointment once you open it up. I recommend buying the DVDs for seasons 1-3 individually. You will save about thirty bucks.

It's about time, that's all I can say. But with all the great extras, the behind-the-scenes looks at the psychology of Cosmo Kramer, the talks with the cast and creators about how they struggled to get NBC to even let them air the show (boy, I'm sure NBC thanked God every day for making the right choice) and commentaries, the Seinfeld Seasons 1-3 set was well worth the wait.
I'd never seen the pilot before, having discovered Seinfeld late in the game through reruns, and so that was a special delight for me as it was actually funny and sitcom pilots are usually just amusing and passable but this one actually made me laugh out loud (by something George said, of course). The cast...well, what can you say? Legendary cast. Though much talk was always made over the greatness of Jason Alexander and Michael Richards, I have to say that Julia Louis Dreyfus (Elaine) is my hands down favorite. Just watch The Subway episode and you'll see why. That was truly the Lainey tour de force and showcased the hilarity of how this small innocent looking woman could explode into a fury of rage and vitriol...all in her mind of course.
The Chinese Restaurant, The Parking Garage, The Boyfriend (with the famous JFK parody), all classic episodes. I'm still confused as to what exactly happened with Jerry and Elaine's burgeoning relationship at the end of Season 2, it seemed like they were together and then at the start of Season 3, the plot was just thrown aside and mentioned once again, cleaned up rather quickly. Nevertheless, this is perfection because as I watched this I only knew the best was yet to come. Elaine had yet to dance, Jerry had yet to say "Hello Newman" in his special way, George had to yet become even more neurotic, Kramer had yet to start making his grand entrances and weird hand gestures and most importantly...the Costanzas had yet to come.
Here's to more years of more seaons and more laughs.

This is magnificent. This is one of the most glorious boxed sets I could have asked for, and I got it free as a Christmas present! You get the first three seasons, a small book-style script (mine was "The Big Salad"), playing cards, and a napkin dispenser with salt and pepper shakers from Monks. I thought the script would have more notes from Larry David in it, and I was sorely disappointed with that. I had a few pages of enormously unintelligible scribbling at the beginning, and then VERY sparsely (like practically nothing) interspersed notes after. But who cares? We all want the DVD's anyway.
I normally wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but these episodes are evidently remastered. A couple of them have an optional intro monologue by Jerry, and it's really obvious when you watch them with that. The intro looks absolutely horrid, but then once the episode starts and the familiar stand-up routine comes in it's beautiful again. There is an average of five episodes per disc across 8 of them. They all have special features; nearly every episode has an "inside look," ranging from around 2-5 minutes, showing interviews with the cast and the writers and how the story evolved. There is another longer (maybe 45 minutes) documentary on the evolution of Larry David's old neighbor Kenny Kramer into the Kramer we all know now. Additionally, there are bloopers, deleted scenes, commentaries, footage of Jerry and Michael Richards from the Tonight Show (RIP Johnny Carson), and more. I have yet to sit through a whole episode with the "notes about nothing" on, but those are basically like that old Pop-up Videos (I think that was the name) show on VH1 where they would pop up trivia text on screen every few seconds relating to what was going on.
The episodes themselves are classic. Personally, I don't think the first season was very funny, but it only constitutes 4 episodes and the pilot. Once the second season hits, though, the show really gets running. The laughs are practically nonstop, which I never really realized before. I certainly never noticed just how funny Michael Richards is. There is a blooper from the episode "The Good Samaritan" in season 3 where Kramer has a seizure at the sound of Mary Hart's voice, and I couldn't stop laughing, it was so funny (make sure to watch for the blooper, not the actual episode...the aired seizure isn't as good). Season 3 only continues the stride. There are so many classic moments from this show that you'd have to have no sense of humor at all to not laugh (like the "kid" who gave it 1 star below).
The writing on this show is top-notch, and it may never be seen again, as less and less original ideas are presented to the public. Do yourself a favor and pick up this boxed set, or if you can find the two individual sets for cheaper, get those. This show had a profound impact on television, and it demands appreciation. I absolutely can't wait for the subsequent releases. At least season 3 of Curb Your Enthusiasm comes out next month!

I have been a Seinfeld fan since I was turned on to the show after a friend suggested I watch "The Contest" my freshman year of college. Since then, like most fans, I have taped every episode I could, waiting for the day they would be available on DVD. Now, that the day has arrived, the waiting is well worth it. Besides, having immediate access to your favorite Seinfeld moments, the extras on the DVD set are spectacular. The gift box has ruined me from any other supposed, "Limited Edition", "Collectors Edition" DVD box set. There is no stone left unturned, and every little known fact a Seinfeld fan could want to know is awaiting you on this set. I have owned it for over a month now, and still have not tired of it. It is one DVD set you will view every night. Well worth any price. We can only hope for the same packaging, and attention to detail in upcoming series.
Very, very, very impressive!!! - Review written on January 02, 2005

The first 5 seasons of Seinfeld will probably never be matched by any other show, simply because it's plot took off from the start and they had such a well-rounded cast. The combination of regular characters/personalities and quirky guests as well as their image of NYC made the show so much more believable. All in all, this was much more than your average TV show and should never be forgotten. The first 3 seasons (with extras) are produced better here on DVD than they were when originally broadcast on TV. The biggest assets of this collection are the hilarious and confident performances of its cast members before they became quasi-icons and living catch-phrases ("spongeworthy", "yada yada yada", for example). And it was all done without the need to resort to crude humor, indecent language, or drug references. The playing cards, Monk's ceramic salt & pepper shakers, and show script are nice bits of lagniappe but add little to the overall package.
This set is still a treasure for those who have seen the first 3 seasons, and an initiation for the unfortunate who have not.

At an expensive price, this is a dream come true for fans of NBC's Seinfeld, the number one show on television for many years. It was a masterpiece of sitcom comedy, the creation of Larry David and stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld. For many years through the 90's, it brought laughter to millions of homes. Seinfeld, long labeled as "the show about nothing" the long running comedy proved that it was a show about EVERYTHING. It made fun of the little things in life, the commonplace became great comedy. Larry David (from Curb Your Enthusiasm) and his comedic talents were in their full power on Seinfeld. For Jerry Seinfeld himself, it became a vehicle for his own stand-up comedy. For me, it became as much a 90's definative show as Fox 11's "Married With Children". It is a time capsule of the 90's. New York City, stand-up comedy and guest stars galore including Kathy Griffin, Raquel Welch, Patrick Warburton, Brian Cranston and many others.
This was the pre-9/11 years, and New York City was exciting and colorful. There was one episode in which Krammer prepares two years ahead for the 1999 New Years Eve party to ring in the New Millenium. A lot of the comedy was in the characters and the adventures they got themselves into, which were hilarious !! Remember the episodes "Master Of His Domain" in which Jerry, Kramer, Elaine and George made a bet on who would abstain from masterbation ? Pure hilarity ! That was a well-written episode. Kramer could always be counted on for laughter with his cartoonish apperance and physical comedy (coming through the door all of a sudden, his many antics) Elaine was a promiscuous, men-loving, adventuresome, care-free, devil-may-care but intelligent and classy girl. Her search for a man who was "Spongeworthy" her affair with the jazz musician and the mechanic who invented sex moves, and of course, her unforgettable lousy dancing made her a colorful character. George was awkward, funny, bitter, pathetic, charming and witty. This show is one that will remain in the mainstream for many years.
There are still reruns on tv and I hope all the episodes of all the seasons, including the memorable finale are captured on DVD. The finale was the highest rated episode and the most watched. All of America tuned in to see the cast jailed as a result of vendettas for characters they had "wronged", including the Soup Nazi, the Iraqui restaurant owner and many others, among them the bitter and chubby mailman Newman. This show will be loved forever.
