Select Queen's Greatest Hits - Review written on August 27, 2006

Queen released albums from 1973 to 1995. In that time Queen made a lot of music that was "great." Thus, as with most artists that have been around for more than 20 years, it is impossible to capture all of their hits or best music on a single CD. Recently this difficulty was recognized with a boxed set of three CDs that captured a much greater cross section of their music.
I consider this collection of Queen music to be their popular music. Much of the music was mellow or radio friendly, and thus much of it hit the top 10. Given that Queen had a very eclectic repertoire, you'll find quirky songs such as "Fat Bottomed Girls" next to the mellow love song "Somebody to Love." Queen's progressive rock and harder rock songs are only barely represented on this particular collection, though strains of their harder edge show through in songs like "Bicycle Race" and "Another One Bites the Dust".
In many ways Queen was an album group. While most of their albums stop short of being true concept albums, most of their albums did have a theme. Also, their music was organized carefully to provide a presentation of the music that was greater than the sum of the individual songs. Thus, listening to a "greatest" collection does little to express the true scope of this group. I recommend this CD as one that provides a small sampling of Queen, and some of their more mellow music at that. You need to also have "Classic Queen" to additional hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody." You may also want to consider "The Platinum Collection: Greatest Hits I, II and III", which is perhaps the most comprehensive set short of buying albums.
There are several variations of this CD. This particular version is an import to the United States, and the play list varies from the U.S. version. The U.S. version has 17 songs, which includes "Body Language" and "I Want to Break Free." This version substitutes "Flash" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," and adds "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)." I consider this version to be superior to the U.S. version when considering the play list. However, this version is significantly more expensive than the U.S. version and the "Platinum Collection" includes all but "Teo Torriatte" and many more songs, keeping it the best choice for a "best of" collection for Queen.
Though this CD is lacking in its breadth and there are better choices available, I still give it 5 stars because Queen was such a great group, and the songs here do represent a small portion of their incredible talent.
An Ideal Collection For Those Who Want Only Queen's Early Material - Review written on October 06, 2005

Queen is, undoubtedly, one of the greatest bands of all time (the greatest in my opinion). As with all great bands, Queen has an unseemly amount of greatest hits collections in their catalogue. On August 17, 2004, a new Queen compilation was released entitled "Queen - Greatest Hits ("We Will Rock You" Edition). How does it hold up? Read on for my review.
Actually, it is not a new compilation, so to speak. It is a mere repackaging of their first compilation releaed in back around 1981 and later remastered and repackaged as a dual compilation along with "Greatest Hits, Vol 2" and repackaged agan about five years later as part of a three disc collection entitled "The Platinum Collection". The catch? This new edition comes with three bonus tracks. How does it hold up? Read on.
Positives:
-If you're only a fan of Queen's early work (their first album up to the "Flash" soundtrack), than this collection is ideal. All the classics from the early half of Queen's career are on here, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "You're My Best Friend", "Another One Bites The Dust", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Somebody To Love".
-A few underrated gems are included as well, such as "Don't Stop Me Now", "Save Me" and the live staple "Now I'm Here".
-The song do indeed sound fantastic.
-Very affordable.
Negatives:
-One of the bonus tracks is "I'm In Love With My Car", one of the weakest tracks in the Queen catologue.
-The two live tracks are pale shadows of the original versions.
-If you buy this collection, you're missing out on all the great stuff Queen did in their later years. No Queen collection is complete without "These Are The Days Of Our Lives", "Radio Ga Ga", "The Miracle", "Hammer To Fall", "The Show Must Go On" and "I Want It All", to name a few of the great tracks from their later years
Overall, if you're only interested in Queen's early years and Queen's early years alone, than this is an ideal collection. But if you want more, there are better collections on the market.
When Will They Get It Right? - Review written on September 28, 2005

It's a tragedy that Hollywood Records ever got a hold of the Queen collection because they've done nothing but screw it up. First they put out that original greatest hits CD, which unbelievably didn't even have Bohemian Rhapsody on it. No accident of course, just a little scheme to try to force you to also buy "Classic Queen". Then they ruined one of my all time favorite albums, the classic "The Game", by adding that terrible, awful, disgusting bonus remix version of Dragon Attack. And to top it all off I can't even replace my awesome greatest hits tape from the eighties. I loved that tape! It had all the best songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody and Keep Yourself Alive, and no bad songs at all.
At first it looked like this CD might have been what I was looking for, but it has two major flaws. The most important one is that you can't even record the songs to your own computer. One reviewer mentioned that you can record it in WMA format, but that's useless if your entire music collection is in MP3 format. The other mistake is the addition of the three live tracks, which really bring down the overall quality of the CD. They put a song on there just because it was used in a commercial? Are you serious? Who cares if the song was in a commercial. It sucks!
If you want all of Queen's greatest hits and don't want to spend a fortune and need to have the songs on your computer, I would recommend just buying the original Queen Greatest Hits CD. Then use file sharing to get Bohemian Rhapsody, Keep Yourself Alive, and whichever other of your favorite Queen songs they left out. That way you really do have all the greatest hits and you don't have to be a total slave to the record company.

I believe there are only a few people on the face of the planet who have never heard a song by Queen. Whether you've heard "Bohemian Rhapsody" during the first few minutes of the film "Wayne's World", "We Will Rock You" at a sporting event, or even seen any of the countless films and comercials featuring "We Are the Champions", you've probably been blessed to hear one of rock music's greatest bands. I was lucky enough to pick this album up at the store (LAST COPPY!!! :D), and I loved it so much, I had to listen to it like fifty more times that day. If you've heard and loved some of the most played Queen songs and want to hear more, this is a great album to build from since it features most heard classics like "We Will Rock You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" as well as songs you may never have heard before like "Lover Boy" and, huge surprise to me, the "Flash Gordon" song!!

This is some of the gayest rock music ever created! Freddy Mercury really pulled the wool over the eyes of so many "macho" rock fans it's hilarious. As he paraded and pranced around in tights onstage, most of his straight audience was too lame to know that he was mocking them - I'm sure many would've been horrified to learn the truth about him. How great is that? Freddy was such an awesome singer. Check out the LIVE AID footage from '85. No one comes close to the way Mercury commands the audience. He had virtually every single person clapping over their heads in unison. What a presence!
As for the music itself: I used to think this was a rock band that dabbled in opera, but, as this collection indicates, they were pretty much a rock-opera band that dabbled in different styles, like disco and rockabilly. Most of this disk is indeed rock-opera. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is probably their most well-known cut in this style and it's great. But then you have cheesy songs like "Bicycle Race" which, as it was released as a single, illustrate the incredibly overblown egos of Mercury and co. (and, hey, more power to 'em).
Of course, the most indespensible Queen songs are here: the sports anthem "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" and the disco funkster "Another One Bites The Dust" is classic too, evoking memories of a fascinated, naive 5th-grade existence. I also like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" which is an old-school rocker unlike anything else here. Aside from that, "Killer Queen" is pretty cool/gymnastically incredible (in an aural sense) and I think "Flash (aaa-aaah!)" is enjoyably bone-headed and funny (whenever that single bass note starts playing, my mind thinks: "Stumble out of bed/ And I stumble to the kitchen/ Pour myself a cup of ambition! . . ." - "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton). The rest is far too "packerish" for my tastes, but I admire Queen's willingness to be themselves even if they were too wimpy to verbalize it in their heyday (c'mon, what wouldn't YOU do for money?).
The original 'GREATEST HITS' - Review written on March 05, 2005

Hello! The original version of Queen's 'Greatest Hits' has finally been released by itself (outside 'The Platinum Collection' and 'Greatest Hits 1 & 2' box sets) in the US. This compilation includes every Top 30 Queen single from the first 8 years of their career. Hence, the exclusion of classics like "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Tie Your Mother Down", both superb songs, but neither a hit and therefore not included on the 'Greatest Hits' album. The tracks were handpicked by the band themselves, and must I remind everyone that the original 'Greatest Hits' release, with the exact same tracklisting as this one, minus the bonus tracks, went ELEVEN TIMES PLATINUM! The downside is that this CD does not include the original packaging and artwork, and the liner notes are not as interesting as those in the US-only releases, 'Greatest Hits' and 'Classic Queen'. Sound quality is at an all-time high on these remasters, and the single version of "I'm In Love With My Car" is finally on available on CD.
Great, but a few omissions - Review written on January 15, 2005

I bought this version of Greatest Hits (there are lot of them, aren't there?) to replace my red Greatest Hits album. Overall, the We Will Rock You edition is a solid set of early Queen songs (from 1974-82). And unlike the red covered Greatest Hits album, you don't have to be subjected to the awful song Body Language.
Unfortunately, there were a couple omissions. Tie Your Mother Down and Keep Yourself Alive should have been added, along with the studio version of Under Pressure.
The live versions of Under Pressure and Tie Your Mother Down should have been dropped. Those versions are on On Fire at the Bowl, so why did they need to be added to Greatest Hits: WWRY?
But forget those problems, this is a solid CD. If you want a CD of old Queen songs, get this one.

First off - if you've already got the UK version of "Queen's Greatest Hits" in some form or another, then you don't need this. This is the UK version - with bonus tracks. People who only have the undercooked USA compilation will find this a delightful purchase, as their theoretical "Greatest Hits" was a bit lacking.
This album features Queen's chart hits from 1973-1981 - yes, this means that the three singles from this era that did relatively poorly on the charts - "Keep Yourself Alive", "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Spread Your Wings" - have been culled (though "Mother" is now added as a live bonus track, along with "Under Pressure", both lifted from the new "On Fire At The Bowl" Cd/DVD). Despite this, we have seventeen classic tracks - all hits in their own right. As was typical of the Queen of the age, they range in style - from simplistic ditties ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "You're My Best Friend"), to hard-rocking live faves ("Now I'm Here", "Another One Bites The Dust") and even one or two songs that defy conventional description ("Bohemian Rhapsody", "Play The Game"). But every single bit of it is great - there's not a disappointing song on there, and you'll be singing along to the lot in no time. My personal favourites are the beautiful "Somebody To Love", with Roger, Brian and Freddie multi-tracked to the point of sounding like a gospel choir; and Brian's emotive "Save Me" - with it's stunning and heart-wrenching lyrics. Possibly the best ballad they ever released as a single.
At least one of the prior reviewers has grumbled that Queen are just being cash-cows and are out to make a bit more money by releasing the same stuff over and over again in different boxes. I seriously doubt that anyone who already has "Greatest Hits" was ever going to buy this anyway, unless they're a massive collector. But, if you haven't got it already in one form or another, then this one is fine to get - plus the added bonus tracks make it just a little bit better. (And by the way - something tells me that it's less Queen trying to make a bit of money and more their American record label - most of the reissues (like this one) are commerically released in the USA only.)
A brilliant album, and well worth the money - unless, of course, you've already got a copy of it.

Queen-Greatest hits (We will rock you) was released to coicide with the opening of the musical "We Will Rock You" in America. It features the same track listing as the original release (excluding Under Pressure, the studio version) in '81 but contains a few new suprises; "I'm in Love with My Car" (originally released on A Night At The Opera '75) and two live tracks "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Under Pressure" (From the upcoming DVD 'Live at Milton Keynes 1982').
The collection also has a corresponding DVD featuring 2 live performances:
Somebody to Love - Queen with George Michael at the 'Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
The Show Must Go On - Queen with Elton John (vocals) live in '97.
Why should you buy something that has already been out there in 4 other incarnations over 20 years? Well, I'm glad you asked. Let me tell you...!
After listening to the first vocal line of Bohemian Rhapsody you can tell right away that this new collection is unique. The digital restoration of these 'seasoned' recordings has cleared up all of the original tape hiss, and it features new 'mixes' on every track. The vocals have been cleaned up and the bass has been brought up as well to make these tracks sound better in our modern stereo systems. This is most present on the new mix of "Another One Bites The Dust". Where some songs are too trebbley or have too much 'mid range', these new mixes have almost made a 'colourful' sound to each song. Even the new music of today has yet to sound this clear and crisp!!
The addition of "I'm In Love With My Car" is an odd choice, but it works. (The song has recently been used by Jaguar in a series of Television commercials bringing attention to the song once again!) Now, the live tracks sound clear, but they definately are not the best recordings we've heard from Queen. (These were released to showcase the soon to be released "Live at Milton Keynes DVD). The inclusion of the live tracks is why I have given this a 4 star rating. Your best bet for the ultimate live recordings of these songs is by picking up "Queen-Live at Wembley Stadium".
Yes, it's just another incarnation of the Queen Greatest Hits train (The 5th to be exact... '81, '91 (american version), '98 (Gold edition), and '00 (Platinum edition). But hopefully this is a precurser for all of their releases in the times to come... Lets hope they follow this up with an anthology of rarities or wonderful album cuts!

"Queen" have had numerous collections through the years, but whether they were released in the U.S. or the U.K., they were always short a few essential songs. Well as far as I can tell, this is finally the collection most casual fans have been waiting for. It's 20 remastered tracks, including "Another One Bites The Dust", "We Are The Champions", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Killer Queen", and many others. Plus a live version of "Under Pressure". Of course there's good songs missing, but the main hits are here, so I suggest you buy this in a "Flash".

Rock bands usually come and go and thensome. 2004 proved to be a good year for returing bands from the smashing 70's, to have a exceptional hits collectionb. Recently, Van Halen proved that, and scored a #3 record with their Best Of Both Worlds.Yet, another band that celebrated over 30 years of music is Queen. They truly were the most dynamic group of the Rock era. Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon, have truly made classic power rock beyond an illusion. The songs that Queen made were just exciting, powerful, and just more than anything else that no one could imagine.
Queen's 2004 remastered Greatest Hits - We Will Rock You edition, is really nothing new for die hard Queen fans. The songs here are just great and remastered beautifully on this record. The hits are still as fresh with classic anthems like We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, as well as traditional Queen standards like Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend, Bicycle Race, and the bass driven Another One Bites The Dust. The album also includes a trio of live performances here, including Tie Your Mother Down, a track that was overlooked previously from this collection. Even though the original recording was overshadowed here, the live performance still is showcased graciously.
Although many people may enjoy this record, several great Queen tracks were overlooked here. including Radio Ga Ga, The Show Must Go On, and other good songs. This collection only was a remastering of the first Greatest Hits. Yet, many people may not want this collection either for both the Queen Greatest Hits Volume I & II package instead, or the Queen Platinum edition with Greatest Hits I, II, and III. This is a good collection for starters, and die hard Queen fanatics that never want to stop being rocked, ever.
