Does Not Get Hot Enough! - Review written on May 03, 2008

The Problems With This Grill:
If you are looking for a product that grills food quickly and easily, DO NOT BUY THIS GRILL. This grill DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to truly call it a "grill." It DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to sear meats. It also DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to grill quickly. What takes 5-10 minutes on my smaller George Foreman grill, takes 35-45 minutes on this grill, and even then, the meat never truly "grills." This product cooks more like a steamer than a grill.
Another problem I noticed is that after just one wash, the non stick coating began to come off the grill plates.
Lessons Learned And Some Information That Might Save You Some Time:
After doing a bit of research on other similar electric grills, I've noticed that removable grill plates have a positive and negative consequence. The positive is the easier clean up. The negative is lower cooking temperature. So the choice is whether you want easier clean up or quicker, better tasting food. Personally, I prefer the quicker, better tasting food so I am going to return this "grill" and try Breville 800GRXL Die-Cast Indoor Barbeque and Grill.
Edit since review: The Breville is an awesome grill that has removable grill plates. It gets very hot (hot enough to sear meats and "grill"), and the non-stick surface is very durable. It's a much better grill than the George Foreman.

I purchased the GFP99 about one month ago and I have used it to prepare several different meals. Each time was a disappointment. I have an older family size GF that works well, but is difficult to clean. I bought the new one because of the removable plates. They are quite easy to remove and clean. The old GF is such a pain to clean, that I only used it for grilling sandwiches.
The GFP99 is much slower to heat up than the older GF. I think it takes roughly 15 minutes to achieve it's highest temperature. Unfortunately, even at it's highest setting, it still is not as hot as the older GF. I tried cooking small(bone in) lamb chops -- after 20 minutes I removed them and cooked them in a pan. I cooked turkey burgers, scallops, and grilled sandwiches. It took much longer than pan frying, or the older GF, and the results were not very good (uneven cooking, no searing).
I plan to return it to tomorrow.
GRP99 - Foreman & Salton LLC (Buyers Beware) - Review written on December 21, 2007

I purchased a GRP99. It heats unevenly and has some poor design features (the free-standing drip pan being just one). It is supposed to have a beeper for various functions. Well, it does in fact beep, but IT IS NOT AUDIBLE IF YOU ARE MORE THAN THREE FEET AWAY (OR ONE FOOT IF YOU HAVE WATER RUNNING).
I complained to Salton Inc (the importer). "Mark" was completely dismissive of my complaint, and just TOO intellectually enhanced to consider the words of a mere mortal. Part of his response to me was "By your own admission it does beep, the fact that it's not audible from more than three feet doesn't matter as long as it does beep. I'm not going to redesign a product based on your complaint."
Fortunately, (the vendor) readily accepts returns.
Buyers beware of Foreman & Salton LLC ("LIMITED LIABILITY" Corporation).

ADDED Jan 02/08: I notice that one person says this review is not helpful and I do not comprehend this. How can any consumer NOT want to know when a vendor is completely non-responsive, non-caring, and dismissive to a valid complaint? Perhaps it was "Mark" cruising these reviews to salvage his good name? Are you there, Mark?
Many other people share my opinion of the dismal character of Salton. And the dismal quality of this GRP99 (and others).
SALTON IS THE WORST THAT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.

We bought it in hopes of cutting down on fat for cooking for our family of four. Worked for a few weeks. Then we got a CL ERR display in the time and temp and the unit stopped cooking 10 minutes in, had to finish the pork tenderloin in a skillet, nasty!. We thought this was a one time deal... Used the unit again, no problems. Then, it happened again, this time too, about 10 minutes into cooking. We thought maybe we were doing something. Tried one last time, failure after 8-10 minutes. Same thing CL ERR displays and beeps until you unplug it. Tried initiating a return today with Amazon. Hmmm, I am now about 10 days past the 30 day window! Lesson learned, RETURN THE ITEM UPON THE FIRST FAILURE!!!! Do not try to resolve, do not think it is you, just return it.
Another thing I didn't like was the lack of searing... Preheat a little hotter and then adjust your temp down was one trick I tried.
5 meals cooked in 41 days... 3 failures... Lesson learned, at the cost of $79 bucks. I would not even give this one star were it not for Amazon's insistence that I do so in order to post! Zero stars!
