A Great Grill. - Review written on August 17, 2008

I was concerned about the removal heating plates, however I must say that the George Foreman is very easy to use and also real easy to clean due to the removable plates. It is great to use outside on the patio for the kids. It's small, light and you can grill a number of hot dogs and/or hamburgers for the gang.

It's an excellent product. We use it alot and we love it.

This was our first purchase of a Foreman grill. This grill meets our expectations. We have cooked burgers, chicken, pork chops, brats and a ham slice on it thus far. The grill heats up quickly and does a fine job cooking the meat. The taste isn't the same as cooking on an outside grill but the meat cooks through and is still moist. This is a healthy way to cook as all the grease flows into the tray. I find the grill exceptionally easy to clean. We now use this grill 3-4 times per week. We used to cook chops and chicken in the oven for 30 minutes or so. This is much faster and the flavor is every bit as good if not better.

We used the original Foreman grill quite a bit; in fact, we beat the heck out of it. We liked the convenience of it, the speed at which it cooks (by cooking both sides at the same time), and the elimination of a lot of the fat.

The "Next Generation" offers all of this, plus a lot more. The new version offers removable grill plates for easier cleaning, a thermostat, and a timer. It will tell you when the grill is ready for cooking, and will adjust to handle thicker cuts of meat. It even has an on/off switch (which the original didn't have) to prevent sparks from occurring when you unplug the unit.

All in all, I have a feeling we will continue to get a lot of use out of our Foreman grill.

This product is awesome. We use it to grill sandwiches, veggies, salmon, chicken, and everything is perfect every time. And clean up is a snap. Although the plates are dishwasher safe (which is a biggie for me) I've never had to put them in the dishwasher because they are so easy to clean. I'm glad I didn't let the one negative review on here scare me away from this one. It's a keeper and we use it all the time. Highly recommended!

It's great if you want your meat to come out steamed. The first unit I got had a problem with the heater. It was exchanged with another unit. The new unit worked better but was still not grilling the meat the way I wanted it to so I went and purchased another George Foreman grill that had non removable plates. This one grills the meat perfectly for me. Clean up is a problem but I guess I'll have to live with that.
Does Not Get Hot Enough! - Review written on May 03, 2008

The Problems With This Grill:

If you are looking for a product that grills food quickly and easily, DO NOT BUY THIS GRILL. This grill DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to truly call it a "grill." It DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to sear meats. It also DOES NOT GET HOT ENOUGH to grill quickly. What takes 5-10 minutes on my smaller George Foreman grill, takes 35-45 minutes on this grill, and even then, the meat never truly "grills." This product cooks more like a steamer than a grill.

Another problem I noticed is that after just one wash, the non stick coating began to come off the grill plates.

Lessons Learned And Some Information That Might Save You Some Time:

After doing a bit of research on other similar electric grills, I've noticed that removable grill plates have a positive and negative consequence. The positive is the easier clean up. The negative is lower cooking temperature. So the choice is whether you want easier clean up or quicker, better tasting food. Personally, I prefer the quicker, better tasting food so I am going to return this "grill" and try Breville 800GRXL Die-Cast Indoor Barbeque and Grill.

Edit since review: The Breville is an awesome grill that has removable grill plates. It gets very hot (hot enough to sear meats and "grill"), and the non-stick surface is very durable. It's a much better grill than the George Foreman.

We've been using a small GF grill for several years and wanted a unit suitable for larger dinners. We were very disappointed with the GRP99. As other reviewers have pointed out:
* the grill takes much longer to heat up
* the grill takes much longer to cook food
* cooked meat does not have the grilled appearance - not seared, etc.
* the plates do not fasten securely to the shell
* the heated area is small compared to the grill size

After trying it once we returned it and bought a GR26SB.
The GR26SB was cheaper and cooks meat like our smaller grill.
No removable plates and no thermostat.
That wasn't a problem before, and we are much happier with the simpler configuration.

Before buying the GR26SB we reviewed the owner's manuals for as many grills as we could find. We also looked at the wattage ratings on the bottom of the grills. Sure enough, the cooking guide for the GRP99 lists longer times than the GR26SB and other grills with fixed plates. If time and appearance are important to you, then check out a range of GF grills before buying.

We do recommend using the GF cleaning pads. They work very well and reduce the cleanup time considerably.

I got this grill as gift a long time ago and it worked fine. Except for the fact that it doesn't close well over thick meat therefore is has uneven cooking. My top grill plate fell off twice recently for no apparent reason. So be careful when buying this grill. the handles are not constructed well enough to handle alot use. Im searching for a new grill.

I chose this item because I liked my previous Foreman grill but it was a pain to clean. I thought this would be so much better as the grill plates are removable plus the added bonus of temperature selection. I thought it had enough 5 star ratings to assure a good purchase - Wrong! Maybe there are just a lot of lemons out there and I got stuck with one but I won't buy another to find out. This grill just does not get really hot! My meat took three times as long to cook and there was no grill marks - just grey looking meat. I have now read the 1 star reviews and can see there are many like mine. Now I didn't have a problem with anything melting. Maybe just didn't use it enough for it to happen. I gladly returned it! I will continue to use my old grill and deal with the hastle of cleaning it.
Unsafe - Review written on February 22, 2008

I've found that the upper grill plate on this grill consistently falls off after the grill gets hot. I securely fasten it before cooking (when grill is cool), but as it heats up and you open it to check on your food, the lid portion of the grill falls off. I've learned to be armed with hot mitts to catch it as it falls, but I was caught off guard once when it fell off, burning my hand and nearly falling on my foot (instead, it hit my linoleum and left an ugly scorched spot). The basic product works well except for this fatal flaw. If this defect could be fixed, it would be worth re-buying.

Got this thing about a year ago, and the removable plates, timer, and adjustable temp are big improvements over earlier versions. But after a few uses, the plastic cover on ours melted a bit and is now a bit deformed and ugly. AND the top cooking plate tends to disconnect when opening the thing. Today it fell off clanged onto the floor just missing my foot, spattering grease all over the place.

Hamilton Beach and Cuisinart make similar products, and they are probably better engineered. Even though this one is no long under warranty, it's getting boxed up and shipped back to the manufacturer.

I ordered this for my husband for christmas and paid alot of money to have it sent to me. It was upseting when my husband opened it and it was flimsy and defected! I asked for a full refund and will buy my new grill from a store where I can inspect it before buying.I will most likely buy a different brand as well.

I purchased the GFP99 about one month ago and I have used it to prepare several different meals. Each time was a disappointment. I have an older family size GF that works well, but is difficult to clean. I bought the new one because of the removable plates. They are quite easy to remove and clean. The old GF is such a pain to clean, that I only used it for grilling sandwiches.

The GFP99 is much slower to heat up than the older GF. I think it takes roughly 15 minutes to achieve it's highest temperature. Unfortunately, even at it's highest setting, it still is not as hot as the older GF. I tried cooking small(bone in) lamb chops -- after 20 minutes I removed them and cooked them in a pan. I cooked turkey burgers, scallops, and grilled sandwiches. It took much longer than pan frying, or the older GF, and the results were not very good (uneven cooking, no searing).

I plan to return it to tomorrow.

I purchased this particular grill as a present for my mom for Christmas. She started using it the next day and LOVES IT!! I t is so easy to use, clean and store away! My dad recently passed and he was the one who would fire up the Weber gas grill, so I knew she loved to bar-b-que, so I got her the George Foreman GRP99 Next Generation Grill with Removable plates, for the mere fact she can set the temp and clean up is easy w/the removable plates. Great Item!!!

I purchased a GRP99. It heats unevenly and has some poor design features (the free-standing drip pan being just one). It is supposed to have a beeper for various functions. Well, it does in fact beep, but IT IS NOT AUDIBLE IF YOU ARE MORE THAN THREE FEET AWAY (OR ONE FOOT IF YOU HAVE WATER RUNNING).

I complained to Salton Inc (the importer). "Mark" was completely dismissive of my complaint, and just TOO intellectually enhanced to consider the words of a mere mortal. Part of his response to me was "By your own admission it does beep, the fact that it's not audible from more than three feet doesn't matter as long as it does beep. I'm not going to redesign a product based on your complaint."

Fortunately, (the vendor) readily accepts returns.

Buyers beware of Foreman & Salton LLC ("LIMITED LIABILITY" Corporation).

ADDED Jan 02/08: I notice that one person says this review is not helpful and I do not comprehend this. How can any consumer NOT want to know when a vendor is completely non-responsive, non-caring, and dismissive to a valid complaint? Perhaps it was "Mark" cruising these reviews to salvage his good name? Are you there, Mark?

Many other people share my opinion of the dismal character of Salton. And the dismal quality of this GRP99 (and others).

SALTON IS THE WORST THAT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.

My wife dropped the first George Forman grill we owned and it didn't survive. This replacement is easier to clean, due to removable grill plates. The machine is tricky; you have to try different temps and times. It does pork tenderloins, lamb chops and thick steaks pretty well. I've had less luck with hamburgers and thinner pieces of meat or fish. They are overdone and very dry before you can bat an eye.

We had the basic George FOreman Grill and used it on occasions. However since we purchased the new Fat grilling machine we keep it on

This grill with the removable plates is so easy to use. My daughter and I have wore out several through the years. You can make hamburgers better and cheaper than you can run to get one. Thanks

I had the smaller Geo. Foreman before and I loved using it but dreaded cleaning it if I didn't get to it immediately.
I love being able to remove and soak the plates if I cannot immediately wipe them clean right after using.
I use it all the time, I leave it out on my counter top.

We bought it in hopes of cutting down on fat for cooking for our family of four. Worked for a few weeks. Then we got a CL ERR display in the time and temp and the unit stopped cooking 10 minutes in, had to finish the pork tenderloin in a skillet, nasty!. We thought this was a one time deal... Used the unit again, no problems. Then, it happened again, this time too, about 10 minutes into cooking. We thought maybe we were doing something. Tried one last time, failure after 8-10 minutes. Same thing CL ERR displays and beeps until you unplug it. Tried initiating a return today with Amazon. Hmmm, I am now about 10 days past the 30 day window! Lesson learned, RETURN THE ITEM UPON THE FIRST FAILURE!!!! Do not try to resolve, do not think it is you, just return it.

Another thing I didn't like was the lack of searing... Preheat a little hotter and then adjust your temp down was one trick I tried.

5 meals cooked in 41 days... 3 failures... Lesson learned, at the cost of $79 bucks. I would not even give this one star were it not for Amazon's insistence that I do so in order to post! Zero stars!

I returned my first George Foreman grill as the plates were hard to clean, so I wanted one with the plates (heating units) detachable. I purchased this one after reading the reviews and checking the grill in Target. I ordered it, used it and basically it is trouble to use.. cleaning it that is. And I do not get the grill effect that supposedly it can give somewhat. So it is taking up space o my kitchen counter. If you wish to use it and clean it and do veggies basically,, it is OK
