Good game crappy music - Review written on January 05, 2008

This is a fun game, I just bought it now after all these years of wanting to play it. It was on sale here at Amazon and I figured what the hell. It took about 4 days to finish this game, and while the gameplay was pretty fun, the fighting parts did tend to get kind of repetitive and boring. The music in the game is also horrible, it sounds good the first 5 or 10 minutes you hear it, but after listening to the same tune throughout the entire game you want to destroy the game. The variation in the game is what keeps you playing, as I'm sure if all you did was fight baddies the entire time this game would be incredibly boring. You can play as Princess Peach, and you get to play as Bowser. It keeps things interesting. Anyway, this is a good entry level RPG, it probably doesn't have the depth that seasoned RPG players are looking for, however it is a good one for the kids.
Very fun. My wife and I play it together. - Review written on September 25, 2007

This is a very fun game. My wife isn't into video games very much. She purchased the GameCube and Wii mostly for me. I got this game planning on playing it alone, but my wife thought it looked cute, so she started playing it. Then, we started playing it together.
We played the whole thing together and enjoyed it so much that we've downloaded the original Paper Mario on the Wii Virtual Console and are now playing that together. I've never had a video game provide so many hours of fun together. I just hope they keep making more.
By the way, if you've played the original Paper Mario, we've found that this one is almost exactly the same. The battles, the plot, the characters, the mechanics, almost everything is exactly the same. But we love it! The graphics on this one (Thousand Year Door) are substantially better, though, as are the sounds. Some mechanics are a little more complicated, also.
If you enjoy cute Nintendo games, this one is perfect, especially for $20. We bought a second copy for some friends. If you're a hardcore FPS guy, maybe you should pass on it, though.
Repetitive combat, WAY too much backtracking, and slow moving dialogue. - Review written on September 03, 2007

This game had potential, and artistically it's very well done, but it quickly becomes a chore to play:
- Repetitive combat: there are only a limited number of unique enemies, with much of the "variety" created by simply changing colors/stats of previous bad guys. There are a few combinations of attacks that defeat most enemies, so most of the battles are fought the same way.
- Uninspired level design: players are forced to walk back and forth across levels in order to complete quests, even though one time through a level would be plenty for many people. One level is comprised solely of battles, which are the most monotonous part of the game.
- Slow dialogue: the dialogue is often so slow as to be painful to click through. And I know it's only Mario, but even with low expectations the story leaves a lot to be desired.
- Frustrating badge system: Even if you only ever select badge point increases when leveling up, you will never have enough badge points to wear all the badges you want (not to mention the ones you don't care too much about).
GET THIS GAME!!! - Review written on August 12, 2007

Well I want to tell you one of the reasons I love this game so much. It's because when you beat the final boss, instead of it having the fnal scene, credits, and finally forcing you to turn the game off, making it so that you lose your data and must continue from your last save, like you never beat the game, it has the scene, the credits, ANOTHER scene, and then it goes back to the game. It's all happy and peaceful in the game, and if you go back to the place where the final boss is, it's not there.
But don't think the fun's not over yet! You see I like games that are fun and that you can enjoy after you beat them. You can still find enemies and battle them in it, revisit all the towns, explore, battle, etc. also this is an rpg (role-playing-game) where you collect items, have turn based battles, etc. unlike super paper mario. But it is still REALLY fun! There's also nice music. Intellgent systems and nintendo are really great copanys. This is one of the best rpgs ever. If you like paper mario 64 (the first paper mario game out of the three, for the classic Nintendo 64, the games go Paper mario 64, Paper mario the thousand year door, super paper mario) rpgs, or awsome games, then get it!
Fun, But At Times Boring (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars) - Review written on August 04, 2007

Paper Mario-The Thousand Year Door is a fun game. In fact, when it comes to anything by Super Mario, this would be ranked in the top 10. It's so fun the way the stage is set up when you fight an enemy. Mario and his friends has many great moves that can help him in his battles. You get to run around the map and talk to people, and some people say some funny things. The game is set up differently than other Super Mario games that are normally played, but at the same time, it's still fun.
The problem I have with this game is the mass amount of dialogue. Yes, this game is sort of like a storybook, but it gets real boring after a while. In fact, after you beat a boss and get a Crystal Star, expect a 20 minute dialogue of reading, and it;s usally about nothing at all. That is the only problem that I have with this game. And sometimes, it's hard to figure out where to go next (and that guy who lives in Ancient Rockport doesn't always help you out), so that gets real frustrating. But overall a fun game. If you grew up playing Super Mario, like I did, this is a fun game to play. Peace!
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door - Review written on July 14, 2007

I loved this game! It was so much fun. RPGs are my favorite types of games, and Nintendo really delivers with Paper Mario The Thousand Year door. The storyline is fun, and the gameplay is great. The fighting style is innovative, as you fight in front of an audience, and as you level up, the audience grows, refilling your Star meter faster. The Pit of 100 trials is a nice add-on bonus (it's not required, but it's fun, not to mention challenging!). Bobbery is favorite secondary character, as he can blow up the walls. The Paper Mario ability is great fun, as you can become a boat, airplane, and even a roll! Highly recommended to anyone who like Mario or RPGs!

The appeal of Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door is the game's sense of style. The makers of this game have explored many different ways to exploit the built-in comedy of the second dimension. Since we view the world in three dimensions, there's something inherently funny about a world comprised of only two dimensions.
The silly dialogue also adds to the comedy of the game. For the first half of the game, it's fun to read what the characters will say next, and I remember laughing quite often. As the game wears on, however, the tone shifts slightly, and the dialogue becomes tedious and un-funny. After about 20 hours of fun, the game suddenly wants you to care about the characters and their concerns. I didn't like this change in tone.
The game is far too easy until the last few battles. There's a lack of balance that doesn't sit well with me. As you get closer to the end, you'll have to endure tedious puzzles and revisit areas over and over again. I thought the game makers got rather lazy when designing the last half of the game.
But the game is a lot of fun initially. It's not necessary to finish the game. I recommend playing it until you feel like you've had enough. There's no big revelation at the end that don't already foresee. If you are in the mood for a silly, sometimes clever, and highly stylized, turn-based role playing game, Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door is for you.
One of the best games I've ever played - Review written on May 06, 2007

It's rare for me to spend a lot of time on any one game; I'm just not a huge gamer. That said, I've recently been picking up a few Gamecube games for my Wii, and Paper Mario TTYD blew me away.
Gameplay is fairly simple and easy; the turn-based battles are great for someone like me who won't spend hours trying to master perfect button sequences to launch special moves. The characters are entertaining, and at times it seems more like reading a novel than playing a game, one that the writers had a lot of fun with (I've found myself laughing at the game more than once).
I'm about 20 hours into the game and I would consider this one of the top 3 video games I've ever played. I'm definitely looking forward to checking out Super Paper Mario after I finish.
Edit: I've long since finished the game (it took about 50 hours, I think...time well spent!) I now have several dozen Wii titles, but with the exception of Wii Sports and Trauma Center, none of them even come close to this game. (Including, unfortunately, Super Paper Mario; it was a neat idea, but the execution falls far short of Thousand Year Door). If you have a Wii or Gamecube and don't mind reading well-written dialogue, you -need- this game.
Easily the Best RPG Game to be Released by Nintendo - Review written on March 09, 2007

Even though I haven't completed this game yet, this is the best game for all ages, Mario fans or not. It takes your gameplaying experience to a total new dimension that has not been seen yet. Yep, since this is "Paper Mario", that means you are in the PAPER DIMENSION. What really made me interested into this totally new concept is that how characters can maneuver around the levels and landscapes, which is totally made out of paper. It is a cross between 2D and 3D. That's what was interesting about this game in the whole start. It is sometimes easy, and sometimes hard, but mostly hard, so it is a good idea to get the whole handbook with the game (found in Gamestop, or other used game stores near you). You may love the violence in the game. Great cartoon effects, and great moves by Mario; In this game he can do moves that he couldn't do normally in the regular games. If you get the chance, find the fire hammer; it will save you someday in the game. The characters that travels with you, especially Yoshi. You can't get over Yoshi, by the way! He maybe young & small, but this yoshi has quite an attitude. Easily one of the best RPG characters of the whole game. Don't mind reading this review anymore. The game will tell you how good it is better than I can, so buy the game as soon as possible before they are all gone!
A fun RPG that breaks the traditional mold - Review written on January 09, 2007
Rating: 4 out of 5
I'll keep it simple and short. Paper Mario is a lot of fun when it comes to being a video game. However, as a true RPG, it suffers a little because of the lack of a truly strong and engaging story line. Mario is once again looking for stars (a la Mario RPG for SNES) only this time, they're crystal ones, and yes, Peach has been stolen AGAIN.These repetitive storylines make the player not care about the story as much as they should, considering the game's RPG classification.
All story complaints aside, the game itself is a lot of fun. The battle system is similar to that of the one found in Mario RPG, and the fun, quirky visual styles allow for interesting gameplay when not in a battle. The saving grace of this game is that the developers did a good job of creating engaging areas to explore and puzzles to solve, while building in that uniques humor found only in a Mario franchise title.
If you like Mario and don't take yourself too seriously, Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door is worth picking up, especially since it is a Player's Choice Title now.
Better than the original - Review written on December 31, 2006

The Paper Mario games are by far the highlights of the series. This game lives up to that reputation in an incredible, funny, and story rich adventure. The game opens up in typical Mario fashion in which Peach comes across a magical treasure map, a map that can lead to a treasure rumored to be under the ruins of an ancient civilization that lay beneath a town named Rougeport. She sends the map to Mario and he goes to Rougeport in hopes of helping her find the treasure. She has gone missing and a criminal organization called the X-Nauts appears and they seem to have big plans that involve gaining control of the map and the treasure. They have begun to seize control of parts of the lands, trapping the inhabitants, and searching for artifacts known as Crystal Stars so they can gain control of their power and use it to unlock the Thousand Year door and uncover the Treasure. But what are the treasure and the Crystal Stars? That opens up into a huge story that players will gradually learn as the game progresses.
The leader of this organization is Grodus who makes an excellent new villain; it's a nice break from Bowser. Without giving the story away, I will say that it along with the game itself is much more darker and involved than the first game. Though the game itself is not dark, it is in comparison to some of the other games much more darker. The game starts up with a seemingly simple plot that turns into a very complex and satisfying story. There are also many subplots in each episode of the game, which are great on their own and also tie into the main story in some way.
The characters, especially Mario's partners, are much more alive and interactive. Every character has unique personality that comes to life through the dialogue. Each character's dialogue has such a unique feel to it that you'll fell as if they are really talking. Even Mario is more alive, though he has no actual lines of dialogue; he makes faces and noises that speak for themselves. Now the graphics are incredible and very satisfying to look at, they're enough motivation to play the game just to see what new sights are comprised in the game. The best thing is that each chapter explores a region that is completely different than the previous one, and has it's own theme and story. This gives the game new and original experiences in every chapter.
And what would be a Mario game without Bowser? Though not the main villain he still serves as a villain and he is playable in intervening parts in which Mario completes a portion of his quest. The cut scenes with Bowser are hilarious and contain alot of in jokes that even adults will laugh at. Peach will also be playable as you control her in the X-Naut fortress, the organization that kidnapped her, and here you will learn alot of Grodus's plans and the overall storyline.
The battles system in fun and easy to learn. There is always something fun to do on screen and something good to look at. Now for those who believe that every game has faults. Here are some possible faults. There is alot of dialogue. This game has a very complex story and that requires lots of dialogue, but it's so interesting you might not notice it. Some scenes however, especially the first few, can be very long and tedious for those who just want to jump in and get into it. But, I will say that it is worth waiting through the scenes as the action after that is just plain fun. Saving can be a hazard as the only way to save is to find save blocks and use them to save. They are times where you're engrossed in the game you forget to puncha save block. Then you face an enemy who is difficult to beat and then beats you, you go back to the title screen and have to start from the last save block. That is VERY annoying so remember to save no matter what.
Well, Paper Mario; The Thousand Year Door is an incredible game. It has great graphics and settings, interactive and funny characters, a complex and involved storyline, humorous cuteness, and of course tons of Mario elements and humor. Still reading well stop, get in the car, and get this game.
