A nice new video with neat new friends! - Review written on May 31, 2005
Rating: 5 out of 5
I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about with this video. It's actually quite good and gets played over, and over, and over (you KNOW what I mean!) and is a favorite in our house. Yes, they did introduce 5 new engines - Spencer, Arthur, Emily, Salty and Harvey the crane, along with Jack, the frontloader and Murdoch. Now, as a professional marketer, I can understand why these new trains were introduced. You have to do something to expand the stories and just keeping the same old trains over and over again just isn't going to keep kids' attention very long. Plus, it's just more fun pretending with all those new characters. Personally, we like Percy and Spencer in our house the best, but really enjoy learning about all the new trains. We have quite a bit of role-playing going on here all day long and these new additions just fit right in.
However, why on earth did they not go with Alec Baldwin again? The guy's an actor, for Pete's sake, the ONLY one they've had that could really tell the stories in such a marvelous way and made it very entertaining. It's what the guy does for a living and why they didn't get him for this one is beyond me. This guy, Angelis (?) is British, but for some reason, doesn't quite have the diction necessary to tell a good story. And forget about understanding Sir Topham Hatt with this dude. We had to watch it about 5 times before we could get all the dialogue for Hatt. This should have been corrected prior to production.
That said, this is an excellent video. The stories are very captivating and the introduction of the new engines in the line are done very well. I do recommend it, even if the guy's voice is a little hard to understand at times. You'll understand him eventually!

A new DVD is called: New Friends for Thomas. Well anyway, I watched this DVD and it's great! All these great 6 episodes narrated by Michael Angelis in America. Why isn't Michael Brandon a narrator on this DVD too. I'm sure it's a better deal that I can get instead of buying individually. But they should make an updated version of a new name: Thomas' New Friends. Don't forget to meet: Spencer, Emily, Murdoch, Arthur, Jack and Alfie. Watch out, Max is trouble, but that's what Jack takes a joke. Here are the stories featured on DVD:
-Gordon and Spencer
-Emily's New Coaches
-The Spotless Record
-Peace And Quiet
-Jack Jumps In (Part 1)
-A Friend In Need (Part 2)
-"5 New Engines In The Shed" (Music Video)
Well there you have them, I hope this review has been helpful to you.

Before I start, let me just say that I agree with what Joki said above. I'm getting really annoyed with you constantly berating Michael Angelis. It's blatantly obvious that the reason you're having a go at him is, not because of his skills as a narrator, but because he's British. There are eight reviews criticising Angelis, and only two of them are actually fair. Angelis isn't very creative with his character voices? Nor were Ringo Starr or George Carlin, but you're not bashing them, are you? You weren't hoping for another British narrator? Well that's a bit of a giveaway. Angelis never gives his characters individual voices? Wrong, wrong, wrong...he DOES give his characters individual voices, and you know it. So give the poor guy a break, and judge him on the way he narrates, not because of his nationality!
Anyway, onto the actual review. "Emily's New Coaches" is probably the best episode on the DVD. "Gordon and Spencer" and "Peace and Quiet" are pretty good, mainly for the introduction of Spencer and Murdoch who are two of the best non-Awdry characters introduced into the series. "The Spotless Record" is a rather poor quality episode, with an unrealistic crash and a horrible ending. The two Pack episodes are alright, but easily the worst on the DVD as they have very little to do with Thomas. The song "Five New Engines in the Shed" is pretty catchy, but not as good as some of the songs on the other DVDs.
Overall, a good DVD, and one that you'll probably enjoy.
A fairly decent Thomas video - Review written on September 19, 2004

New friends for Thomas is an alright Thomas tape. I did not care for the new narrator, Michael Angelis, very much because he's not very creative on the voices(Alec Baldwin sure was)and some times you cant even understand what he's saying at all. The stories are okay but not as good as the other ones since they aren't the ones written by Revrend D. Awdry himself.
Stories are:
Gordon and Spencer 4/5:
Gordon meets Spencer, the Duke and Dutchess' private engine. He thinks that he's the fastest engine in the world and refuses to take Gordon's advice about taking on plenty of water. Soon enough, Spencer ends up breaking down on Gordon's hill and Gordon must come and help him.
Emily's New Coaches 4.5/5:
Emily is the newest engine on the Island of Sodor. One day Sir Topham Hatt tells Emily to learn her new route and take some coaches around the island. The only coaches she can find are Annie & Clarabel, but she doesn't know this yet. As she is touring the island, Emily whistles to all the passing engines but no one whistles back. Emily just can't seem to understand why everybody on the Island of Sodor is so unfriendly.
The Spotless Record 5/5:
Meet Arthur, a tank engine with a spotless record, meaning he has never been naughty or gotten into an accident before. While working with Thomas and Percy, he refuses to join in on bumped the silly freight cars. Thomas soon comes up with a trick that will ruin Arthur's spotless record for good.
Peace and Quiet 5/5:
Meet Murdoch, a big strong engine who has come to the Island of Sodor to help pull the big and heavy freight trains. Murdoch soon finds out that everyone on the island enjoys talking to each other, but Murdoch would much rather prefer some peace and quiet. The next day, Murdoch gets to travel through the peaceful countryside, at last he has his peace and quiet, but not for long.
Jack Jumps In 4.5/5:
Meet Jack, the cheerful tractor who has come to work with a construction crew called The Pack and see how his first day goes. First he can't find anybody to work with, then he encounters a big bulldozer named Max, and then he jumps in to help to soon and ends up in a sticky situation.
A Friend In Need 4.5/5:
After weathering his first day with The Pack, Jack is given a second chance to behave. But when the chance comes for help again, will Jack jump in where he doesn't belong again or will he have learned from his mistake?
5 New Engine In The Shed(Music Video) 4/5:
A music video that talks about all the new engines in the shed.
I also think there were to many uneeded characters in this one(Think "The Pack" which includes Alphie, Max, Byron, Oliver, Ned, Kelly, Izabella, and the newest member, Jack) I doubt if they will ever show half these characters again. In fact, the only character they do show now is Emily. Overall, this is a fairly decent Thomas video, 7 out of 10.

I don't like the narrations, but my 3-year-old thinks it's funny that the engines talk differently from other videos.
The best feature is the music video. It's very catchy. My son demands to watch it again and again, and we sing it all the time. (I can't wait for a CD that includes this song.)
New Friends a Decent Thomas DVD - Review written on July 21, 2004
Rating: 4 out of 5
I think this DVD is fun to watch for new and seasoned Thomas the Tank Engine fans alike. Six stories of about four minutes each introduce five new engines to the Island of Sodor: Harvey, Emily, Salty, Murdock, and Arthur. While the humans in the video are stiff and immovable, the engines speed along the track with various, often comical, expressions. The stories are:
GORDON & SPENCER ? Spencer is a high speed, hardheaded silver express engine who refuses to stop for water during a run.
EMILY?S NEW COACHES ? Newcomer Emily borrows Thomas? coaches Annie and Clarabel without asking and alienates herself among the gang.
THE SPOTLESS RECORD ? Cheeky Thomas can't resist spoiling the spotless record of big blue tank engine Arthur.
PEACE AND QUIET ? Mighty Murdock is all work and no talk, but his chatty station mates just want to get to know him.
JACK JUMPS IN ? Safety first! Here come Jack, an energetic red front loader and Alfie, a green excavator.
A FRIEND IN NEED ? builds on the previous storyline about Jack and Alfie.
The only issue I had with this DVD is the SING ALONG SONG entitled ?Five New Engines in the Shed.? It invites the viewer to sing along but does not provide the lyrics on screen! But after listening to the song over and over, my daughter easily sang along with the children?s choir.
My daughters also liked the FUN & GAMES section. It offers 3 games that vary in difficulty, a Scrapbook of photos of all the machines on the Island, and Web Fun. The easiest activity is A DAY AT THE WORKS ? children select the correct paint for each engine. The next one is REALLY USEFUL ENGINES ? match the correct engine to the clue provided. This one was a little tougher since my daughters were not familiar with the newer engines. The hardest activity is REALLY USEFUL PLACES, which requires some knowledge about the Island itself. If you complete all three activities at one sitting, viewers are rewarded with another catchy Thomas song.
For new fans who don?t know who?s who, the SCRAPBOOK is the one to watch. Narrated by Sir Topham Hatt, it introduces both old and new friends of Thomas. Select a short video clip to see the friend in action. Includes: Bertie, Bill & Ben, Bulgy, Bulstrode, Caroline, Cranky, Daisy, Donald & Douglas, Duck, Edward, George, Gordon, Henry, James, Mavis, Percy, Peter Sam, Rusty, Terrence, Thomas, Toby, Trevor, Spencer, then Emily, Murdock, Arthur, Jack, and Alfie.

To start out a review on a Thomas & Friends volume lets get up to speed shall we. To start it's now volume 36 (maybe wrong but sure) and Alec Baldwin is not the storyteller in this one. IT'S MICHAEL ANGELIS! Also it's just not directed by David Mitton, it's also directed by Steve Asquith who sucks as the director of the next one "Steamies vs. Diesels." All the rest is mostly the same.
Gordon and Spencer: The Duke and Dutches came for a visit and Gordon wants to take the train until Spencer the Duke and Dutches private engine was asked to take them. Gordon told and reminded whenever he see him don't forget to take on water, but Spencer would just say, "Who cares!"' and when Spencer came to the hill he ran out of steam, so Gordon was sent to rescue Spencer. Gordon pulled Spencer and his train the rest of the way and Gordon made it. Spencer was imberossed and Sir Topham Hatt said to Gordon, "You are the fastest engine on Sordor," and Gordon replied "I know that."
I 'll write another review soon on "Emily's New Coaches."
Not bad, not bad at all - Review written on June 23, 2004

First off, let's discuss the "new" narrator. Michael Angelis has narrated the British version of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends since 1991 (and he still does) , when Carlin was new to the American version. He does a good job with characters like James, Thomas, Gordon, Spencer, and in fact most of his characters but his Sir Topham voice can best be described as sounding like Sean Connery after having too much to drink. Some of the episodes are slightly dull, like Peace and Quiet, and the Jack and Co. episodes introduce tons of characters in 2 episodes and hardly feature Sir Topham Hatt's engines at all! The Spotless Record has an unexplicable accident and a corny friendship ending, and the Awdrys who created the stories the show was originally based on were much better writers. Perhaps HIT will do something to honor them for the 60th anniversary of Edward, Gordon, and Henry: the oldest 'Thomas' characters.

My 4 year old Thomas addict LOVES this video and begs to watch it over and over: so, it DOESN'T MATTER that I (the adult) find it derivative of Bob the Builder, and dislike the "new" narrator (he doesn't even TRY and distinguish between the character's voices!). Sure, "Ms. Jenny" is a doppelganger for Bob's "Wendy": but at least she's a woman in charge - not a demanding shrew (Lady Hatt), a screaming shrew (Alicia Batti), or a damsel in distress (the ever-rescued Mrs. Kindly). I have spent the last 3 years watching the same 20 or so tapes over and over and over again, til I've started dreaming about trains... so ANY new Thomas videos are welcome, in my house.

I'm a bit torn on this one. The narrator does a very good job with the accents (remember, Sodor was supposed to be between the Isle of Man and NW England); much better than Baldwin. And the new engines look good (Spencer is an A4, and would be a younger cousin of Gordon's; Murdoch is a fine-looking Class 9F, like "Evening Star," the last steam engine built by BR). But the stories just aren't as good as the original Awdry ones. There are plenty of stories left from the originals that have never been produced (see "Thomas the Tank Engine: The Complete Collection) -- HIT Entertainment should drink from the well, not the puddle.
The games are also mediocre, and the voices that accompany the games are just dreadful.

Thomas The Tank Engine's newest video is a good one but I'm not to thrilled with the new narrator Michael Angelis. He sounds good with some of the characters like Spencer and Murdock but does poor with James and Sir Top Hamm Hatt, when he says "Well Done" it sounds more like "Well Jhone" (O.o). I liked Alec Baldwin more than Michael.
Episode Info:
Gordon And Spencer: The Duke and Duchess visit Sodor with there private engine Spencer. It's up to Gordon to help Spencer when he runs out of water on the hill.
Emily's New Coaches: Emily the new engine takes Annie and Clarabel by mistake which makes Thomas cross.
The Spotless Record: Theres a new tank engine on Sodor, Arthur, who has a spotless record. But when Thomas plays a trick on Arthur it costs him his record.
Peace And Quiet: Murdoch comes to the island to help pull heavy frieght, but he also wants some peace and quiet. However Salty, Harvey and a flock of escaped sheep ruin it.
Jack Jumps In: Jack the front loader joins a construction team called "The Pack". He'd like to stay but if he jumps in where he shouldn't, it might not happen.
A Friend In Need: Jack helps Thomas when Ned the Steam Shovel accidentally breaks the bridge. Thanks to Jack, Thomas escapes an accident and Jack officially becomes part of the Pack.
This video is great but I wish Alec Baldwin was still the story teller.
Most of the characters weren't needed but I liked it anyway - Review written on March 27, 2004

Let me start off with saying how much I hated Alec Bladwin's narrations. He thought Stepney and Iron Arry and Iron Bert needed Austrailian accents in order to sound good but he did away with the Donald and Douglas accents George Carlin did so well. Michael Angelis sounds old but he narrates better than Alce Baldwin. I've also said that they don't ever use the characters they have so why bring new ones. The answer is so that they can sell the wooden trains and Take-Along Thomas. I think that they should either create a new series with Jack and Alfie and their crew or they should do away with them all together the series should still be focused on trains.
Ok now for the review part I liked the 4 new trains introduced but they rushed in introducing them becuase none of them were in another episode. Harvey and Salty had yet another minor role they haven't had another major role since their debut tape Salty's Secret. The new trains are Spencer a fast engine who belongs to the Duke and Duchess, Emily the first girl train to become part of the Sodor railway not counting Lady who was only in the movie, Arthur a tank engine who follows the rules and he behaves himself, and Murdouch a ten wheeled engine who enjoys peace and quiet. There are also 7 new trucks, cranes, and bulldozers named Jack, Alfie, Max, Isabella, Oiliver, Byron, and Kelly. Jack is the new truck who helps out Thomas when a bridge collapses and he is eager to help out. The episodes are prety good but they needed to introduce all of these characters in two tapes because they introduced too many. It is still a good tape and I would buy it if I were you.

This is the first release of any of Thomas season 7 episodes in the US, and season 8 is currently in production.
In my opinion, Season 6 was a bit of a mess. Writers were brought in for the first time and the episodes were written quite untidily in general, and they were all quite similar to each other.
In season 7, a new production staff partially have come in and improvements have been made, the new episodes are a lot better and on this new DVD we get an example of that with the 4 new characters. The only thing that spoils this release is the inclusion of a spinoff atempt "The Sodor Construction Gang" which blatently attemps to copy Bob The Builder and fails misserably.
The stories-
Gordon and Spencer. Writer Lee Pressman. Gordon meets a Duke's engine Spencer who is large, big headed and silver, and Gordon soon teaches hima a lesson.
Emily's New Coaches. Writer Jan Page. The new Scottish engine Emily takes Annie and Clarabel without seeking permission from Thomas.
The Spottless Record. Writer Paul Larson. New engine Arthur is keen to stay clean.
Peace and Quiet. Writer Jan Page. New engine Murdoch wants some peace.
And then come the two stories "Jack Jumps In" and "A Friend In Need" Writers Phil Fehrle, Jonathan Trueman, Abi Grant. Thomas is the only train in these two as they try to introduce a new set of contruction workers, but in doing so they have produced the worst two Thomas episodes ever!
So a lot of new engines and characters and a new narrator to the US, Englishman Michael Angelis who has done it in the UK since 1991. He's a pretty good narrator, you certinly won't think he's any worse than Alec Baldwin sounding like he's falling asleep!
A good buy for any Thomas fan, or if you're children aren't Thomas fans then let them try it!

This is awful. It will take years for the all the new "characters" introduced here to reach your local toy store. Fearing audience loss, the creators have brought us a construction site overseen by Jenny, our British "Bob The Builder," and it's here that you'll lose it after the blizzard of new vehicles. It's ridiculous. The Thomas world has gotten so big that I doubt I'll ever see Peter Sam or even Edward again. So, as the accompany sing-along says, "There Are Five New Engines In The Shed" (how can any of them fit?) and Jack the tractor. The coolest new addition is Spencer. Okay, I hate all this marketing, but Spencer is a righteous, gray bullet-type train. It kills me to say that, but it's true. The rest are pretty dull and uniformly large engines (I assume large engines sell better). The stories themselves are fairly lifeless. Now for the REALLY BAD news. This is my third or fourth Thomas DVD review, and I have ripped Alec Baldwin in the past, but heaven knows I miss him now. They've gone back to a British voice. The new narrator does give everyone a distinct voice and is obviously a professional, BUT I just don't like his voice. It's naturally very low and some of his "choices" for the characters are unfortunate. His Sir Topham Hatt is a mumbling, slurring drone, and overall the narrator's pitch is so all-over-the-place that I feel a headache coming on.I know these videos are for kids, but there's only so much bad background noise an adult can withstand. If it weren't for Spencer, I wouldn't even have given this release two stars.

I picked up a copy of this video at my local k-mart. I have no clue why it was out ten days early. Anyway, I've watched it a lot. The new characters are great. Arthur, Murdoch, Emily, Spencer, and Jack and the Pack. Spencer was a temporary character, which stinks, because he's cool. But the others are great too, though the Pack didn't really seem like a Thomas item. But what happened to Trevor, Terrance, George, and Bertie? Oh well. This video is great. Lots of new character, but not many old ones. By the, for those who were wondering, the narrator is Michael Angelis. He is really good, except with Sir Topham Hatt. Good Video. Hope you all enjoy it!

Thomas and his friends aquire new freinds. First, Gordon has a rival engine that think Gordon is less than himself in "Gordon and Spencer". Sadly, this the only episode with Spencer in it. Then, a female steam engine named Emily accidentally takes Thomas' coaches by mistake and Thomas gets very cross with her. But, Thomas is saved by Emily and she gets her own coaches! Third, an impressive LMS tank engine has a "Spotless Record" that gets on Thomas' nerves. So, he plays a trick on him. Fourth, a awsome, huge steam engine named Murdoch comes to Sodor and seeks peace and quiet. Sadly, he comes across run away sheep, but gets what he wishes for. Then, Jack a front loader comes to join a pack of construction crew with new freinds such as Alfie the excavator, Oliver the excavator, and others. Next, Jack is a girder when the bridge breaks and Thomas crosses! Finally, a song dedicated to 5 new engine friends, Salty, Harvey, Murdoch, Arthur, and Emily. This video is awsome and if you like engines such as the A4, 9F, or a 4-2-0, then this is your movie!!! For train lovers! AWESOME narrator!

Those stories are new!
Gordon & Spencer:
The Duke & Duchess of Sodor pay a visit to the engines, and bring with them Spencer, their own private engine. He is sleek, shiny, fast and full of pride. Gordon is jealous and feels that he is not the proudest engine on the line. However, disaster strikes when Spencer runs out of water! It is up to Gordon to save him and redeem himself of his stolen title.
Emily's New Coaches:
Emily is a new steam engine who has recently arrived on the Island of Sodor. She accidentally takes Annie and Clarabel, and Thomas gets annoyed by this. But soon, Emily saves Thomas from crashing and he apologises. As a reward, Emily is given new coaches.
The Spotless Record:
A new tank engine from the LMS called Arthur arrives on the island. He has a spotless record which means he's never been naughty or left a mess. TFC puts him to work with Thomas & Percy. Arthur's first job on the island was to take a train of closed vans full of fruit to market. The trucks started to sing rudely and Thomas then plays a trick and tells Arthur that TFC doesn't like the trucks singing and that Arthur should stop them from doing just that. This soon leads to an accident and Thomas then owns up.
Peace & Quiet:
Murdoch is a new arrival on the Island Of Sodor, but the only thing he wants is a bit of peace and quiet. However, this isn't very likely when he comes across a flock of runaway sheep.
Jack Jumps In:
Thomas delivers Jack the Front Loader to a construction site where a team of vehicles from the Sodor Construction Company -the "Pack" is working under the supervision of Miss Jenny. But Jack gets too excited about working and Miss Jenny wonders if he is too keen to join the Pack.
A Friend In Need:
Jack and the Pack are back. Jack is still on trial and although popular with the Pack Miss Jenny is still unsure about whether to keep him. When Ned the Steam Shovel accidentally breaks the bridge, Jack holds it up so that Thomas and his train can cross, and Miss Jenny decides that Jack has proved himself and lets him join the Pack.
