One Of the Real Classics : Put It On, Let it Do Its Thing - Review written on November 16, 2007

First of all, this album contains "You Don't Know my Name", "If I was Your Woman", "Karma", and "If I Ain't Got You". I can't think of anything except Janet's 1993 album that has so many classic tracks one after the other. One of my favorites remains the album opener (I love how Alicia always has a quiet piano intro that breaks into a big song).
However, moving past the obviously amazing singles, there is much here to drool over. 'Samsonite Man' in particular - there is something very unique about that track. When most people think of this CD, they almost always remember "If I was Your Woman" first, but I would say that I personally think of "Dragon Days" first - its a slow burner, but when it hooks you in, it really never lets go.
Alicia Keys made a better album on "Unplugged" (she has never sounded better before or after that album), but as a studio album, this will always be my favorite Keys album. There is something special about it, you can just put it on ANY time of day, let it play and do its' thing, and it will never disappoint you. Her debut album is certainly not 'timeless', but this one definitely is.
If you are at all into collecting classic R&B records, then this has to be in your collection already. If you're new to the scene, there are very few albums on Amazon with so much repeat value. Get this today!

And I think this is probably the album to choose. I have listened to this CD over and over in the past. More than 25 times! =P
Anyway, this is what I think of it, track by track.
Intro - 7.5 Nice, but I think the intro, Piano & I on Songs In A Minor was better.
Karma - 7 Never cared too strongly for this track, and it's not the best way to start this off. However, it's OK. The worst track on the album.
Heartburn - 7.75 Has somewhat of an old-school R&B feel to it.
If I Was Your Woman/Walk On By - 8.5 Quite enjoyable actually. I don't know how much of it is Alicia's doing though since it's partially a remake.
You Don't Know My Name - 9.5 One of the best tracks on the CD! Leave it to Kanye to work his production magic. Loads of bass, but it fits. Love you, Kanye Omari!
If I Ain't Got You - 9 Decent video, but love the song. Great choice of a single. This was my ish for a while!
Diary - 10 It was very nice to hear this tune at night on 93.7 WBLK. Anyway, it's perfect. No flaws whatsoever. The second best track on the CD!
Dragon Days - 7.5 I can relate pretty much even though I'm a guy! =D Anyway, it's decent, but she offers better elsewhere. Also, there isn't enough piano.
Wake Up - 8.25 Nice lyrics, some meaning behind it. Pretty good overall.
So Simple - 8 Not as strong as Wake Up, but relate-able.
When You Really Love Someone - 8 She writes about relationships, and the needs that many people seek. Love her.
Feeling U, Feeling Me (Interlude) - 8 This is my mom's jam. She wishes so much for it to be a song. It makes for a great interlude.
Slow Down - 11 I feel this song immensely. Great message, especially for the ladies! I think it's her best song, period.
Samsonite Man - 8.5 Great piano. But what do you expect from Alicia? Pretty good lyrics. One of the better songs here.
Nobody Not Really - 9.5 A super-great song. Jazzy feel. Relate-able. Nice ending. Gives you a bit of insight; into her life, maybe even into your own. Super enjoyable.
Overall, it is a very good experience. Alicia brings you into her thoughts, her dreams, her life. Longing is what I hear in her spirit. You gotta check this one out if you've skipped over it.

4.25 stars.
R&B with a touch of soul that shouldn't be missed!
My Favourite R&B/Soul Album From A Female Artist! - Review written on October 27, 2006

Despite the fact that "The Diary Of Alicia Keys", singer/songwriter/musician Alicia Keys' sophomore effort, has already achieved phenomenal success both commercially and critically, I'm reviewing this album (I've owned my own official copy since 2004) in hopes of converting non-believers into Alicia Keys fans and scoring myself some helpful votes.
This album is most definitely a flawless R&B/Soul record - whereas her debut album "Songs In A Minor" was a ballad-heavy debut that showcased Alicia's soulful, gritty, powerful vocals, her compelling songwriting abilities and her undeniably amazing display of musicianship, "The Diary Of Alicia Keys" continues to capitalise on those same qualities while throwing a few extra surprises into the mix. Produced by super-producer/satisfactory-rapper Timbaland, "Heartburn" finds Alicia Keys sexily professing her infatuation with another man over sweaty bursts of faint percussion and infectious electric guitar loops; slow jams "Slow Down" & "Dragon Days" finds Alicia Keys sounding sexy without being sl*tty, lacing soulful vocals with lusty lyrics, smooth production and sexy guitar riffs for extra intensity; she pulls off a beautiful rendition of "If I Was Your Woman"; and "So Simple", which uses a nifty vocal sample (or it could be singer Lellow, who is easily overshadowed by Alicia Keys' soulful vocals and overpowering presence...hell, maybe Alicia's voice was studio-altered/enhanced), explores the growing complexity of an increasingly troublesome relationship with incredible lyrics over a simple arrangement of piano and faint percussion.
However, it's when she sticks to what she does best that she churns out some of the best songs to grace her catalogue. Alicia Keys' always-spot-on vocals and killer lyrics, which talk about that inescapably overwhelming feeling of being absorbed in addictive love, effortlessly ride over Kanye West's stellar production and old-school grooves -piano keys, violins, etc.- on the flawless lead single "You Don't Know My Name" ; R&B singers Tony! Toni! Tone! lend their soulful vocals on "Diary", a piano-driven R&B/Soul classic ballad about being the person or "diary" someone else can confide in and be truthful with ; album closer "Nobody Not Really", with its laid-back horns and smooth vocals, is a melodic ode to universal loneliness and feelings of neglect from the rest of the world ; and the ballad "Karma", where dramatic violins and obligatory piano work accompany Alicia Keys' story about a man wanting her back after dumping her, speaks for itself.
"If I Ain't Got You" is definitely the best track on the album, and the reason I bought the CD in the first place. Alicia Keys' soulful vocals and expectedly excellent display of her piano skills ALWAYS make room for her powerful lyrics. However, this song has more substance than its "all-the-riches-in-the-world-are-nothing-without-you" theme/cliché might suggest. It tells us how we judge people by their physical features ("Some people think / That the physical things / Define what's within"), how our material obsessions are what makes us happy as opposed to what our actual lovers have to offer from themselves ("Sometimes you need 3 dozen roses / And that's the only way to prove you love them"), how we're all so focused on retaining our youth and outer beauty ("Some people search for a fountain / That promises forever young") and so much more. Hell, the grand statement of how people live for fame, fortune, power or just to play the game reeks of raw truth all by itself, as does the whole track.
If you're into raw, artistically accomplished R&B/Soul that speaks to the heart, soul, mind and life as a whole, you should have no problem enjoying this album. For those of you who despise albums loaded with balladry, you MIGHT be better off avoiding this album. Ultimately though, everyone should get a copy of this album & hear what real R&B/Soul should sound like. 5 stars!

Her music comes from the heart and it's still worth purchasing! - Review written on May 25, 2006

This album tops her first one. She's one of few performers who can wear the title of artist and wear it well -- she's always honing her craft, and produces marvelous results!! This album is proof that Alicia means biz-nessss when it comes to producing quality music.
One pet peeve I have in regarding this album is that my two most absolute favorite tracks on the album are the two shortest ones!! The last track, "Nobody Not Really" is a beautiful song, but it's under three minutes long; the other one that's tops with me is "Feelin' U, Feelin' Me." It's an interlude, but it's so smooth, it should have been a song in itself. It has a definite "get busy" kind o' vibe. She plays the Rhodes piano and synthesizers on "Feelin'..." so well that Stevie Wonder, the perfect or of the Arp and Moog synthesizers, would be proud!
Of course, "You Don't Know My Name," is the gem of this album, and "Heartburn," which is produced by one of the hottest producers (pardon the redundancy) in the biz, Timberland (move over, P-"Dippy"), pays homage to the foremothers and forefathers of funk -- if you wanna "get jiggy," then this is the song to listen to. The slower songs, "If I Ain't Got You," and "When You Really Love Someone" (which sounds like a combination of "Fallin'" and "A Woman's Worth" from her debut album -- which is good thing) also score big with me.
Alicia Keys has done a superb job on her second album. She has injected herself right smack into old school. Her full bodied musical effort conjures the street corner harmony of The Delfonics with a generous tinge of Teena Marie inspired musicianship. To just say I absolutely love this album doesn't even come close to describing the total listening pleasure it gives me. It is in a class all to itself.

Okay, I'm not hatin' because Alicia really does have big-time talent. She's singing and playing the piano at a time in the industry when more female vocalists are spending time strippin' and posin' -- tryin' 2 distract you from the fact that they don't have skills.
Alicia, thankfully, isn't in that category. Outside of Beyonce, she's probably the next best female artist of the decade.
I own this CD and it's not bad, but it's not all that compelling or passionate once you get past her radio singles "If I Ain't Got You," "Karma" and the catchy, luscious "You Don't Know My Name."
I do believe this album is an improvement over her debut CD, but overall this album doesn't tickle my fancy like a Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, Jill Scott, Janet Jackson or Aaliyah CD.
I'm not saying this LP is bad ... just as an LP, it doesn't hold my interest song-to-song.

Ok. This album is just perfect. There is absolutely no other way to describe it. It is perfect. In every way. Alicia Keys is one of the the BEST artists ever born, and I hope she lives to be 100 so I can listen to her sing until I die. That is how good this album is.
Track 1- "Harlem's Nocturne" is a beautiful piano solo with some other little special effects. I am not a huge fan of this type of music, but I really like this track.
Track 2- "Karma" is SLAMMIN'! Just great. A nice, up-tempo song about what goes around comes around. A. Keys delivers once again.
Track 3- "Heartburn" is like Karma, only delivers a totally opposite message. I like this track. It is good. Not smashing like some of the others, but a nice relaxation track.
Track 4- "If I Was Your Woman/Walk on By" teaches Gladys Knight a thing or two about soul. This is probably the 2nd best track on the CD.
Track 5- "You Don't Know My Name" is AWESOME! It is somewhat more up-tempo than the previous and next song, but still extremely soulful and erotic in a strange way. AWESOME SONG!
Track 6- "If I Ain't Got You" is the best song ever written. And my personal favorite song of all time if youre interested. It is beautiful, soulful, relaxing, basically the quintissential A. Keys.
Track 7- "Diary" is not one of my personal favorites, but a pretty good song never-the-less. Tony Toni Toné does a very good job with A. Keys.
Track 8- "Dragon Days" is a very good track. It has very interesting lyrics and is soulful, as most of A. Keys' stuff is. A very good track to listen to when you need to relax.
Track 9- "Wake Up" is again, not my personal favorite and not very memorable at that. I only listen to it rarely, so I cannot really tell you what its like. Sorry : (.
Track 10- "So Simple" is a COOL song! It is so interestingly mixed. This is a very neat song to listen to. EXTREMELY COOL!
Track 11- "When You Really Love Someone" is basically a track to show off her voice. It doesn't have great lyrics, but it shows off her smokiness and soul. Good for relaxation.
Track 12- " Feeling u, feeling me" is just o.k. It isn't that interesting or good, it's just kinda there. I don't know why she called it an interlude. Or why she even put it on her album for that matter.
Track 13- "Slow Down" is a good song. It is solid and durable, not powerful like some of her stuff, but good nonetheless.
Track 14- "Samsonite Man" I only listened to twice. I just never really took the time to study it like I have some of her other tracks. Its a good song, but not noticeable.
Track 15- "Nobody not really" is one of my personal favorites. Like on Songs in A Minor, she put, as track 15, a song that is NOT about love, but about her and how she feels. It has such cool lyrics, much like "Caged Bird" on SAM, and it just such a neat finish to such a great album.

Alicia Keys. One of, if not the best female artist in the world. On The Diary of Alicia Keys, she puts her heart and sould into every song. The vibes and beats are unbelievable. If I Ain't Got You is one of the best songs that I have ever heard, having written this entirelly herself, Alicia really won me over with this song. You Dont Know My Name gives you a slight, slight taste of Alicia's acting ability, which you can see more of in her If I Aint Got You Video, or in the Feature Film she is starring in, due out sometime soon (???). Karma is another great one, with a hot beat and powerful lyrics. Wake up is also one of the better songs on the album with more powerful lyrics and a great beat. All in all Alicia Keys 2nd album into her career is a must have. Highly reccomended.
