This is in my opinion the best game system. First of all it's made by sony. I have allways had good luck with sony products. From tvs to cameras, sony has allways made good stuff. Lets talk about the system first. I have the older version which came only in black. Now though you can get on in black, silver or ceramic white. I lay the system down flat when I store it, as well as when I play it. The system is pretty light at about 6 pounds.
The controller is in my opinion the best controller of the last gen game consoles. You have to buy a memory card to save your games which is good if you have friends that play the games you do. You can just bring your memory card with you when you travel. Also, if you insert the memory card before you put a game in you can look through your card to see what games you have saved on it. This is good if you want to delete a game or make a copy of another. It also shows you the date and time you made the save. I though it was neat to see when I saved the games I saved on it.
The system plays very quietly and lasts a long time. I have had mine since like 98 and it still plays great. If you looking for a big game list, your in luck. If you look playstation 2 games up on amazon you will see more than 1000! They have games that more than likely everyone will enjoy. Now you can go online with the system. However I'm not sure how many games actually have online portions in the ps2. It was to late for ps2 fans to care. Also, you could have a hard drive for the system for games like Final Fantasy 11. I only have one because I beta tested the game and got mine free. I don't know if more than 5 games even use the hard drive. You don't need to have games to use it though. You can store all your ps2 game saves from your memory card to the hard drive. I have SO many saves on it. So that is one cool thing you can do. I am pretty sure the new ps2s don't even have space for the hard drive. So if you did want one you would need to get the older version.
They are still putting out games for the system. Some would say the graphics do not meat up to the new systems but I say so what? I have a 360 as well as a Wii and I think the graphics look great. What it all comes down to is this, if your looking for a well know, long lasting video game system with a huge library that will keep you entertained for a long long time, then the ps2 is the system you should get.
tons of great games if you are serious about gaming !! - Review written on August 18, 2008

I bought my PS2 probably about five years ago and I think it's a pretty good system.I know the PS2 has its problems like the graphics are worse than the first Xbox and Gamecube, but the system has a lot of great games. The Xbox quit early because a lot of companies went straight to Sony and Gamecube never really had that many games they did not want any violent games and focus on Gameboy advance and DS.
The best thing about the Playstation 2 is that it has very type of game that is popular like Final Fantasy 10,Time Crisis 2&3,Grand Theft Auto San Andreas,Devil May Cry 1,2,&3,Midnight Club 3, and many other games.I prefer a PS2 over PS3 any day because the point of PS2 is the huge library of games and PS3 doesn't have any games that I want to get. I own every brand console Dreamcast,N64,PS2,Snes,Psone,and Xbox 360 so I am not biased I just like great games that are made well, part of the problem is that the companies take longer to make because they could go out of business if they don't sell enough games so they only release something that will sell something like Halo 3 or Final Fantasy.
Well,I bought an extra Playstation 2 at a used store for $20,if it didn't work I could always use it for parts. The issue with the system is that it had "disc read error" this is so annoying, but my brother and I just took it apart and fixed it,now it reads most of the games.Another problem is that the graphics are dated and some games look bad. Besides the problems it's a nice system if you want awesome variety of great games than pick up a PS2.
Pros: huge variety of games, some of the games look good still, you can
you can still buy the games and controls at the store, DDr and
Guitar Hero gave it new life
Cons: "disc read error" is annoying, some games look bad,at the time not as
powerful as Xbox or Gamecube

On March 4th 2000, the gaming world was rocked by the arrival of Sony's next generation videogame console know as the Playstation 2.The Playstation 2 went on to sell over 980,000 units within the first 24 hours after release in Japan.Powered by the 128-bit Emotion Engine processor tested at 294 MHz and supporting Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, the Playstation 2 delivered some of the most advanced graphics, gameplay and sound to ever grace the gaming market.Sony's Playstation 2 has continued to dominate it's rivals with an impressive library of games that include:Metal Gear Solid 3,Final Fantasy X,Killzone,Socom: U.S. Navy Seals,Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas,God of War, and Grand Turismo 3: A-spec, which has reportedly sold over 14 million copies as of April 2008. The Playstation 2 uses the "Dualshock 2" contoller which sports an analog interface and "force feedback" technology, commonly known as the "rumble" or "vibration" effect. The Playstation 2 also uses an 8MB memory card for saving game progress and information.Along with the improved design, the Playstation 2 also functions as a DVD player, allowing the player to watch movies using either the Playstation 2 controller as a remote or using the seperatley sold DVD Playback Kit which included a T.V. style remote control along with a signal receiver for the remote that plugs into the controller port on the front of the system. The Playstation 2 is also "Backwards Compatible", meaning that the system can recognize most Playstation 1 games as well.In later years, the arrival of the "Network Adapter" brought the Playstation community online for the first time, allowing gamers to verse each other in real time on such games as the critically acclaimed online frag-fest that is the "Socom Franchise".The Playstation 2 has gone on to sell over 130 million units, and has grown one of largest online gaming communities to date.Though the arrival of the Playstation 3 has drawn much attention, the Playstation 2 continues to sell. With one of the strongest line-ups of original games and one of the largest library of games to date, the Playstation 2 is here to stay.
Is Playstation 2 the best? - Review written on October 06, 2007

Actually,I only have a gamecube, but I have played x box and ps2 a lot. Personally, I think the gamecube has the best games and controllers, but doesn't do very much. The games on it are appropriate for most younger kids. The playstation 2 also has great games and controllers, but not as many great games. The games I would recomend for playstation 2 are: Guitar hero |,||,and |||, anything in the crash bandicoot series, and the capcom series. The playstation 2 can also play cd's and DVD's. The x box has the best graphics, the worst controllers, the fewest great games, and is the most expensive. So it all comes down to your choice. But there all great consoles.
Get It NOW!!!! - Review written on January 19, 2007

Sony, made the PS2 in 2000. Now in the year 2007, you must buy it. The game selection is bigger then any other console (over 1400, maybe even 2400), and at 130 bucks, it's a nice price. Old PS2's had an expansion pack for online adapters and hardrives, altthough the new, slim as hell versions have a network slot built in, but no hardrive slot. PS2 plays PS2and PS1 games, and lets you watch most dvd's. The PS2, and it;s games, arent good for online play though. It came out a year earlier then the XbOX and Gamecube, so it wasnt made for online play. The graphics, depend on the game. If you care about minor graphic details, then get a XBOX or Gamecube. The PS2 uses DVD-ROm type disks for games. Gamecube uses a smaller, in size and capacity disk. Online play is ok. U can connect keyboards and headsets for some games, to talk with your oponents. Games on this console are staggering in numbers. Wanting every great game the PS2 has to offer is like wanting a different game every day for next few years. A few are the Need for Speed series, and the Burnout series, and, everyone's favorite, the GRAND THEFT AUTO series. My old PS2 is over 2.5 years old now, and it still runs great. The only bad part is the peripherals. I dont know why, but my PS2 controller doesnt work, and my TV cable is ripped on the video wire. Although i have a friend with a PS2 who never had these problems, im not sure where they're coming from. The PS2 controller is the same as PS1 (with analog sticks), except the analogs sticks are used with the directional pad for the games. There are available component and s-video cables for the PS2, so you can get better graphics on your games. It can stand horizontally, and vertically (with a stand sold seperatly). XBOX is to big and bulky. Gamecube has bad games. PS2 is the king. For game saves, you need a seperate memory card, but now that the PS3 is out, they're cheap as hell. The games are cheap. The games are fun. The console is reliable. Get it now.
And you can play your CD's on it, and hook it up to a 5.1 surround sound system witha seperate cable.
A Good Investment, Even For Non-Gamers - Review written on January 12, 2007

I was a Nintendo loyalist for years and years, and aside from Sega's colorized Game Gear, this was the first non-Nintendo system I ever purchased. I switched to Sony for one reason, and one reason only. Vice City. After playing it at a friend's house, I had to get it. I couldn't get enough of insane bike stunts and spectacular car crashes with 80's music playing in the background. After a long-standing combination of determined effort and shameless cheating, I completed 100% of the game.
So there was no more need for the Playstation 2 now that Vice City was over and done with, right? You'd think that, but sure enough, I found another game I had to get, even while restricting myself to a somewhat miserly budget. Dance Dance Revolution Max this time. I never imagined a video game could be used for ANY form of exercise until this game showed me better. Some of those goofy little arrows move pretty darn frustratingly fast.
I never quite mastered DDR Max, and to be honest, I haven't even come close. But I found a new game to play in the meantime - Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain - a rare Brock Lesnar wrestling video game. I'm definitely getting my 15 bucks worth of this disc.
I'm not too big of a gamer anymore. In fact, these are the only three Playstation 2 games I have. They're good ones though, and they've brought me enough joy for me to know that my Playstation 2 purchase was indeed a wise one. Add onto that the added bonus of DVD playing, and I'm a very happy man. Been watching quite a lot of Ren and Stimpy on my Playstation 2 lately I can tell you.
Great affordable upgrade from PS1, still plays all of the games, and DVD capable - Review written on December 22, 2006

Now that PS3 is out, PS2 has become more affordable than ever. I have a PS1, and this system allows me to play all of those games. It also works as a DVD player as well, so I can keep it in my gameroom as the sole DVD player as well. The system does run warm, but not much warmer than any of my other DVD players. And Many new PS2 games are still coming out, so this system is not dead yet. Sony has a winner in the PS2, and if PS3 is half as good as PS2, it will be the monster of gaming systems for a long time coming.
Playstation 2 Beats The Test of Time - Review written on October 12, 2006

My first video game console was a Sega Genesis, so it was so strange to try even a Nintendo or Sony product as I got older. I was glued and attached to my Sony Playstation 2 when I got it in late 2003. To this present day, I still have it amazingly. The bulky model that "sits" instead of "stands" still plays on. I read about gamers that have to do that or can't get DVDs to play or some dilemma that lessens their experiences. I have been very lucky to not encounter any of these situations. My regular, bulky PS1 was not so lucky and had to be replaced as disk read errors reoccurred way too much. After 3 years, the only issue I have is waiting a couple extra seconds for the browser window to show up and read the PS2 disk. However, this has been happening for several months and it stills reads PS1 disks and DVDs perfectly.
Playstation 2 may not have universal games (e.g. Mario, Halo), but it has an exclusive video game lineup that goes on and on. The graphics never cease to amaze me even when I switch to the newer video game systems. The controllers are very user-friendly. I don't find myself wanting to get wireless controllers, and the analog sticks so beat D-Pads. The advancements made with the Sony Playstation 2 are ground-breaking compared to when I first started playing video games. I am not much into PC/computer games, but the online capabilities via the PS2 would make me want to try!
Fabulous, but with flaws - Review written on October 09, 2006

I was always a computer devotee when it came to gaming, I never got into the whole console debacle, until now.
I got a PS2 for a birthday present a couple of months ago, and I'm so glad I did. There's some games I've wanted to play that are only available on PS2 (Broken Sword 3 for instance). So I was happy with my present. And what do I think of it?
The PS2 is brilliant, but it has it's flaws.
For an example, when I got it, my Dad and I bought one and brought it home to set it up. We turned it on and 5 minutes later, it turned itself off and wouldn't turn back on. We'd only bought it 20 minutes earlier and it was already broken. We took it back and they gave us a new one. This one worked perfectly, so I was satisfied. But it's pretty shoddy work to have it break 5 minutes after turning it on for the first time.
And I the only person who has dust galore all over it after letting the console sit for a couple of days? I have nowhere to put it, so I have to put it on the floor - I leave it there for two days and come to use it and it's coated in dust.
I also don't like how you have to buy memory cards for it - the memory card is expensive on it's own, not including the PS2 itself AND games.
But the good things are it's a nifty little piece of technology - very sturdy and small. It doesn't take up that much room and it plugs into any TV. I have a small TV in my room and it plugs and works on it fine, which makes me happy. The controls aren't that hard to use, it really depends on what game you buy, but it didn't take me long to figure out how to work the controller. The graphics are pretty amazing too, especially since it's being played on a TV versus a computer. And I LOVE the fact you can play DVDS on it - I have a DVD player, but it's always being used by somebody else. And I can't play normal movies on my computer, so the PS2 is perfect. Fabulous.
So the PS2 is an amazing piece of technology, but it definitely has it's flaws. I'm still pretty annoyed the first one we bought broke immediately.
PS2=Great while it lasted. - Review written on July 12, 2006

At this moment in time,Quarter 3 2006,nobody no longer cares about PS2,XBOX or GameCube but all the hype is being poured into next-gen consoles like the PS3,XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii.
All that will be on the PS2 for the rest of its lifespan will be rather cheap knock-offs of next-gen games(think GRAW) and multiplatform sports games.
But I nontheless have things to do on my PS2 before upgrading to a next-gen console,I`ve got to buy some games I want.Mercenaries,COD2:BRO and MGS3:Subsistence,I also want to buy a cheap/used Network Adapter so I can go online with Subsistence and maybe try COD2:BRO.
PS2 has had its moments,3 seasons that PS2 most enjoyed were:
Quater 4 2001:GTA3,MGS2:Sons of Liberty,Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 and others.
Quater 4 2002:TimeSplitters 2 and GTA:Vice City.
Ouater 4 2004:GTA:San Andreas,MGS3:Snake Eater.
Now I will sum out the whole console and rate it:
The console:
Design:The design is great, its portable and you can place it either horizontal or vertical. But the SlimLine is the best design.
8/10
Variety:The PS2 is not the most varied console ever, you can have either a black or silver "big block" PS2(the original model) or black or silver "Slimline" model of PS2.
8/10
Controller:The PS2 has a very comfortable controller that is not as bulky as XBOX`s or not as many buttons as the GC or XB.The PS2 controller is not very good for shooter games though. Its the DuelShock 2,with two anolog sticks which can be pushed down as R3/L3 and has the "Rumble" feature.
9/10
GAMES:
Library:
The PS2 has the biggest game library of this generation from the Metal Gear Solid series,Devil May Cry series,Resident Evil,Silent Hill,Gran Turismo,Jak and Daxter,Ratchet and Clank as its exclusives. And LOADS of multiplatform/ported games.
10/10
game variety:
The PS2 game variety is very balanced, you get loads of RPG`s,shooters, fighters, stealth, driving, racing, crime and squad-based strategies.
9/10
Other:
Graphics:
The PS2 does actually have the worst this-gen graphics,XBOX and GameCube ones are much smoother, but the PS2 still has bloody great ones!,the best looking games on PS2 are MGS2,MGS3 and any sports game, but many other games do seem to look like polygon pixel hell. The best graphics on PS2 are impressive,on par with some XBox games even, but that is limited I`m afraid.
8/10
Loading times:
Meh,the loading times on pretty much most of PS2 games suck but much better than PS1`s DREADFUL loading times which you could be half making a cup of coffee and the game will load up.
5/10.
Well thats all I gotta say about the PlayStation 2,Great console with flaws, overall I rate PS2~~~8.5/10~~~
But now onto next-gen games!
Great System - Review written on June 25, 2006

This is the first gaming system we have purchased for our children, and it is a big hit. After shopping and comparing, we decided to get the PS2 for 2 reasons: 1) The price was good compared to the Xbox and, 2) Huge game selection for all ages and interests. A month after purchasing the PS2 we have got our entertainment value from it already. We hit the local video store and took many PS2 games for "test drives." I like The Shadow of the Colossus, and the many fantasy and RPG games available. My wife loves good old Sonic, Pac-Man, and all the arcade games. My daughter loves Curious George, and Chronicles of Narnia. If you are looking for a family gamily system, the PS2 is flexible, and a great value.
PS2 maybe the least powerful of all three, but is def. the most FUN! - Review written on June 16, 2006

PS2 does not have as good hardware as XBOX and GameCube, both of its competitors have better graphics, less loading times etc.
But PS2 beat them, just because it has more games.I own all three, but i`ve packed my XBOX and GCN away because i`ve finished all the games i wanted from them,if any more games I want come out for XBOX/GCN i will obviously connect them back up again, the reason I have to packi away a console when i`m not using it is because on my little TV screen in my parents room I can only fit one console at a time as I do not have enough room on my desk as its also got our PC is also on our desk.
Anyways on with the topic, the PS2 not only has a feastful of games but as you know, you can play DVDs,CDs and play Online multiplayer games. You can also play all your old PS1 games.
