But that doesn't mean this album is worth throwing in the trash. There are some good performances turned out by the likes of Ann Nesby ("I'm Getting Ready") and Shirley Caesar ("The Stone"). But the fact that several gospel songs are mixed in on an urban album may make things seem a little disorganized (but Missy Elliott had a hand in producing, so that's not really surprising). However, some people will probably argue that the movie dwelled on singing in a gospel choir, so those tracks fit perfectly well.
Anyway, there ARE a few missteps on this album, like the cheesy title track performed by Beyoncé, Missy, MC Lyte and Free (the VJ from 106 & Park). It's hard to distinguish between MC Lyte and Free anyway because they both rap exactly alike. And "I Know" by Destiny's Child neither helps nor hurts the album. There's another song, "Rain Down", by Angie Stone and Eddie LeVert. Angie sings well, but Eddie LeVert's scratchy (for lack of a better word) vocals don't sound right on an uptempo song. He sounds better when he's at home with the O'Jays later on the album on "Loves Me Like a Rock".
The rest of this soundtrack is okay, but as reviewer Reginald D. Garrard said best, none of the songs really stand out on their own. Basically only buy this album if you're a huge fan of the movie or of Beyoncé.

The songs need the movies' visuals for them to succeed. Tunes like "To Da River", "I'm Getting Ready" "The Stone", "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Loves Me Like a Rock", and "Time to Come Home", while enjoyable, worked on film because of the combination of music, setting, character reactions, and all the other ingredients necessary for a musical film.
The songs lack their "punch" when standing alone.
"To Da River" with T-Bone, Lil Zane and Montell Jordan
"Rain Down" with Angie Stone and Eddie Levert Sr. (from The O'Jays) this is my 2nd fave
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" (great acapella!)
"He Still Loves Me" (lovely song)
"Fever" with Beyonce (3rd fave, incredible vocals!)
"Time To Come Home" with Beyonce, Angie Stone and Melba Moore (1st fave-heavy vocals and rapping)
The thing I love about this album is anyone can listen to it, whether young or old. This has got something for everyone and I recommend this to ANYBODY especially gospel music lovers! Ciao xx
It's 75% pop/rap kinda music (and let me just state I hate that junk...I'm into real singers, not "stars") starting with "Fighting Temptation" by Missy Elliot et al which is just a disco song that really detracts from any mood you're looking to achive by listening to a gospel or blues album. Then you've got "I Know" by Destiny's Child which is just typical of the band.
Things start looking up with track #3 with "Rain Down" which I'm pretty sure was the finale song they played at the competition in the film. The mixing on this track bugs me, but thats a minor thing about a good (not great) song.
Unfortunantly for Track #4 we move to gospel-rap (who'd ever think those two genres could ever come together!) by T-Bone et al and although it was an okay moment in the film, this track is way to dull and long to listen to. Again, it's too fast comapred to Track #3 stuffing up the flow of the listening experience.
Now...Tracks #5 and #6 we're back to gospel with "I'm Getting Ready" and "The Stone". These two are typical gospel tracks which are satisfactory.
Track #7 is terrible as far as I'm concerned! Faith Evens has a gorgeous voice at the beginning of the song, but then next thing you know this ridiculously annoying disco beat comes in and ruins it all. Great voice, bad bad bad producing!
Track #8 is "Fever" and it is the HOTTEST song on the album by far. Classic song, simple execution, and a great voice! I wish Beyonce would do more blues!!!!
Track #9, "Everyting I Do" is a dull duo worth of a Destiny's Child album.
Track #10 is my 2nd favourite song and is The O'Jays (the barber's from the film) singing "Loves me like the rock" in a great blend of blues and barbershop-quartet styles! Simple and pure gold!
Track #11 is "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" which is okay but I dont get much feeling thru this recording. I wonder if it was the playback they had on the film actually since I liked it better in the film.
Track #12 is "He Still Loves Me" and is nice because it brings one of the O'Jays together with Beyonce to make a nice harmony of voices in this beautiful gospel song.
Track #13 is gospel-rap again...*sigh* Dull!
Track #14 over-produced rap (with a dash of indian) junk they play during credits!
Track #15 P.Diddy and Beyonce....by this stage I am so dissapointed I turn it off in 5 seconds.
Now...after all that, I recommend something like the BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA who sung their great song "Soldier" in the film - or just buy the great film instead.
Don't watch the movie-just get the soundtrack. It's worth it.
I was hoping there was a soundtrack to the film because the movie was only half the fun. I even felt moved on these preformances of:
Rain Down
To Da River
I'm Getting Ready
The Stone
He Still Loves Me
Time To Come Home
One thing we all have to remember is that gospel music has evolved just as any other genre'. God does'nt care how you praise him....just that you do!
This album is a symbol to that testament. So dont just look at the the singers themselves. Look at the quaility of music that is being performed. Expression is an art which is also a gift from God.
Enjoy and God Bless!
I listen to these songs early in the morning on my way to work and it gets me going for the day. I know that the people in cars next to me think that I'm crazy because of all of the dancing that I do while I'm driving. I recommend this Cd for all Beyonce fans out there, I think that I would have enjoyed the CD more if it didn't have as many songs with her on it. I also recommend this CD for all of the people out there that went and saw this movie in the theaters and loved all of the music and joy that it may have brought them. Go pick this one up even if you aren't that religious.
"I Know," by Destiny's Child (whom I am not a big fan of, but I really love that song).
"To Da River" by T-Bone, Zane, Montell Jordan for all the hip hop fans.
"Rain Down" by Angie Stone and Eddie Levert, Sr
"I'm Getting Ready" by Ann Nesby
"The Stone" by Shirley Caesar and Ann Nesby (takes you to church).
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by Beyonce I feel the Holy Ghost when she is singing that song.
"He Still Loves Me" by Beyonce and Walter Williams, Sr (my favorite song on the whole album).
"Time To Come Home" by Beyonce, Angie Stone and Melba Moore (my second fav).
This whole album is a winner. If you would purchase this CD you will not be disappointed.
The other songs are great also. Beyonce's "Fever" is very sultry. Great mix of artists on this album. Enjoy!
