A bit too strenuous for beginners, but a good workout nonetheless - Review written on October 09, 2008

Having watched and worked with a more basic power yoga video in the past, I was already more or less familiar with the postures and exercises in Rodney Yee's Power Yoga - Total Body Workout DVD. I really enjoyed the calming music and the spectacular scenery in which Rodney performs the workouts. It makes me feel just a little more "powerful", despite my presently somewhat flabby midsection! ;-D
I must admit, however, that I have not been able to make it through the entire set of workouts. It's just too strenuous for an office worker like me who leads a mostly sedentary life. Just 30 minutes of this video is more than enough to send sweat trickling down your brow and raise your body temperature and heart rate considerably. In fact, I usually feel exhausted but well-exercised after even 20 minutes of the basic workout - and I'm a 39-year old male who isn't in particularly terrible shape to begin with.
There are a few postures that I thought could use a bit more explanation or practice, but unfortunately, this video doesn't linger on the basics - it rolls right along from one pose to the next. I found that the pacing is easy enough to adjust to overall, once I ran through it a few times. I haven't lost weight with this DVD, but then again I think it's something you need to continue at least a few times a week, and I probably haven't given it enough attention.
Overall, as a general workout guide and a decent physical and mental diversion, I'd highly recommend this DVD, despite the more advanced nature of the postures and the no-nonsense, non-stop pacing.

As a yoga enthusiast for years, I am used to yoga for fun, stretching, flexibility, and a peaceful experience. The Power Yoga-Total Body Workout is just that...powerful. Forget peaceful. You will soon be in a full-body sweat. The poses progress from one to the next with little time for catching your breath, and some are great for challenging your balance and coordination. I wanted a more strenuous workout, and I got it with this DVD. Rodney Yee is a good teacher, especially for the intermediate and advanced levels. However, this is not for beginners.
All in all, I love the workout and try to incorporate yoga with my other workouts at least three times a week.
I am a fan of Rodney Yee, but this was disappointing. Very repetitive. - Review written on August 01, 2008

I bought this DVD based on the reviews and because I have his other Power Yoga workouts and enjoy them. I was very disappointed in this DVD. Like another reviewer, I was expecting some more challenging poses. All I got were the same few poses over and over again. Yes, it was hard. Very hard. But boring at the same time. If that makes sense?
It was too difficult for me to continue without stopping, and I am somewhere around intermediate in my yoga skill level. But yet I was so bored I just wanted to stop. I would think to myself "this pose AGAIN?"
So here is my list of pros and cons:
Pros:
Very challenging, for intermediate or advanced students
Beautiful setting
Basic yoga poses, nothing too out there
Cons:
Very repetitive
Few of the more challenging, interesting poses
Too hard for most people, I think. He holds the poses quite a long time.
I didn't care for the music
You will like this DVD if you like to do the same poses over and over again. The first 30 minutes basically consisted of Warrior 1, Warrior 2, push up position, upward facing dog, downward facing dog, standing forward bend. Over and over again.
The rest was a little more varied, but still only common poses. You will not like this video if you are looking for different kinds of poses, or if you do not have a whole lot of strength already. This is not for beginners.
I'd recommend instead:
Intermediate video for women - Yoga Conditioning for Women, 60 minutes.
Power yoga - Power Yoga: Stamina (Rodney Yee), 20 minutes.
Beginner yoga - Stress Relief Yoga (Suzanne Deason), 20 minutes.

I've tried a couple yoga DVD's, and out of all of them, this one is definitely my favorite. I like that Rodney Yee has a great, low-key, personae, as opposed to some of the wishy-washy yoga instructors featured in many videos.
I could have gone for some more poses, as he seems to repeat Warrior one, Warrior two, and some of the basic poses just a bit too much for my liking. But, all in all, it's enjoyable and I definitely feel it without overdoing it. I will say, though, that you may feel it in your back. I know I do, but I've had some problems with lower back pain.
All in all, I feel great after completing the video and it's a good 60 minutes long, so I feel like my yoga practice is complete. It's definitely a great choice if you are like me and aren't one of those people obsessed with yoga--but you enjoy it. It's tame, to the point, and effective. It's great on the intermediate yoga level (or for some beginners with more flexibility, etc)-- there aren't any headstands or anything too terribly difficult.

After reading other reviews of this DVD on Amazon, I expected this DVD to be quite chellenging but found it not to be so. Rodney is a great teacher, the anatomical directions he gives on the DVD are very good but I found there to be a lack of consistency with his breath counts, which is a crucial part of a yoga practice. The flows were very basic based on Short Form Ashtanga postures - although you would have to have practiced yoga before because he uses the names of the poses often without verbal instruction as to how to move your body into the pose. I've been practicing yoga for 6 years and teaching for 3 years. I am 50 years old and in good shape for yoga but I am NOT and never was athletic. I've had shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff so I'm not Cirque de Soleil material but I can still take and give a tough class!! I like to rate a class on how many times I have to wipe my sweaty face with a towel, how many times I have to take a break in child's pose, and how many sips of water I need!! With this DVD I did not do any of those things and I was in a HOT room wearing fleece yoga clothes! So, my advice is if you are an advanced beginner or beginning intermediate yoga student, this would be a nice choice for you but if you are more experienced or stronger looking for a good, challenging home practice and are used to a strong vinyasa flow, this would not be my first recommendation.
