Cartoon like but the game is all that matters - Review written on July 18, 2008

Halo what else can be said that other's have not?
I love the game, not the speed of play, not the FPS, not the graphics, not the other graphics cards of now days but just the game of capture the flag or team sports.
Halo has hit the mark on the spot. The ping response then frame rate the lag...does not matter I adjust and continue to play. The OBJECTIVE of what ever you select it to be is what matters.
I have some who see this game as a pawn ownership (most kills) but that is not any game in Halo, except slayer (don't play that unless you have the game hosted and one the best hardware known to man and also cheat).
The Objective is what matters and so you must achieve that regardless of your ping, or connection. This will mean you must hide, you must run, you jump, you switch weapons, you get better weapons...
That might mean go for the enemies flag, the skull in oddball, the mountain, some differently choose random spot on the map within a crown you just defend for a longer time.
It's about a goal here. Nothing else matters regardless of the splatter of text from others... If you get the job done then the chatter is just noise.

Halo, the game is one of the main reasons the xbox did so well on the console market. All I have ever heard from most of my friends was "halo, halo 2..," so when I finally get my hands on the PC version of the game, I thought that I was going to be in for one of the most extreme and best experiences in game history. That's not really what happened.
Graphics. This game is showing its age, it was made in 2001!
Sound. This sound is amazing, the sound director certainly did his job.
Gameplay. Ahh, well, yes the AI does give you a great experience, it wears off quickly, it's not helped by the fact that the levels are very repetitive. The enemies you fight are either the Covanent or the Flood, that's it, 9 different enemies. Well the gameplay was not everything I was told.
Plot. Great story, nothing more to be said.
Multiplay. Yeah, its fun, but it doesn't live up to my expectations from the 6th best game of all time.
Replay. You may decide to occasionally hop into multiplayer, or play the campaign with a friend, but that is it.
Sorry, Halo fans, but on the PC, halo doesn't really hold up to the high expectation, especially when it was released two years after the xbox version. It would have faired better if it was released at the same time.
On the PC, halo is crushed by opposition like Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor. That concludes the review, I am going to go play Unreal Tournament 2004.
Graphics 5/10
Sound 10/10
Gameplay 7/10
Plot 9/10
Multiplay 7/10
Replay 6/10
Stability: On the second to last level I experienced some serious graphical corruption, and after that the game messed up by graphics driver
Overall 6/10 - Passable (Sorry)
Loved single player. Never played multi-player - Review written on March 20, 2008

I bought this about a year ago. I loved the single player game. Never played the multi-player version so my comments do not apply to multi-player. I prefer single player. This was a lot of fun action that was enjoyably addictive. I would do a good, bad, and ugly review, but whether I would recommend this game (today in 2008) depends more on the buyer than the game.
If you are a hard core cutting edge game player who plays PC 1st person shooter games more frequently than you blink, and you laugh at any PC game that has less than 20 different keyboard controls that you have to memorize just to avoid being killed within the first 30 seconds, and you have a super-turbo charged PC that you have to bolt down to the floor so it doesn't fly away because of all the over-clocking and super coolers that you have installed, then this is probably not for you (by 2008 standards). Those guys should check out Crysis. The demo of that alone brought my PC to its knees. You'll love the challenge of just getting Crysis to work with its graphics settings on high.
But, if you have a relatively decent gaming PC, that didn't cost more than your new car, and you like 1st person shooter Quake and Doom types of games that are simple and straight-forward, and you don't play PC games more hours than you sleep on average, then you will probably love this game.
The graphics are pretty decent. But, they aren't super impressive, especially compared to games coming out now. But, again that depends on you and your PC really. I think comments on this site within the last year that criticize the game because of its graphics or lack of complexity in the graphics are a little unfair. Modern games (like Crysis) have graphics that are unbelievably realistic. But, I think they require you to own your own small nuclear power plant to run them and they really require at least two graphics cards installed in a brand new gaming PC to work. No joke.
The graphics in Halo are great but not relative to newer games obviously. That is an advantage if your PC isn't a small power plant like I described above because you can actually play the game. The story line is fun and easy to move through. You don't have to invest a whole lot of time just to get past a certain level or room. You can keep progressing fairly easily without feeling "stuck." The music is very cool and adds to the dramatic scenes. Like a previous post said, the vehicles (jeep, banshee flying ships, etc.) are really cool and both fun and easy to operate. Like a previous post said also, the sounds the aliens make are not really impressive. I didn't even think of it unill I read that comment. But, it is true. The aliens movement is sometimes a little awkward and it is a bit awkward to have a sniper rifle at the end of a level and then find that you no longer have it on the next level because it basically starts your character over with the original weapon.
I think Halo is exactly what it was designed to be. It is a simple, straight-forward, and fun 1st person shooter that is fairly easy to progress through. It has a lot of fun action and variety but isn't so huge spacially that you sometimes feel lost. It is designed so you and the action keep moving forward. If you are an avid modern (2008) gamer, you may not care for this. If you are someone who loves video games and 1st person shooters but plays PC games occassionally, then I think you will like Halo a lot. Plus it's only $20 here on Amazon.
My all time favorite game - Review written on February 11, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
First a review of the single player campagin. This may be my all time favorite game or at least in the top 5 along with Halo 2 and 3. I played Call of Duty 4 and I still think Halo 1 is better than that!! It has better gameplay and story than COD4. And I even like Halo's graphics better than COD4 even though they aren't as advanced!
First I played Halo 1 for the PC several times over, including 2 or 3 times on Legendary level of difficulty. Then I bought an xbox 360 just so I could play Halo 2 and 3, which I did. Then I bought a far more powerful computer recently, and I'm playing Halo 1 on it !again! in legendary mode! Also I found a hack to play it at 1680 x 1050 resolution on my widescreen LCD monitor. It's fantastic! Halo 1 NEVER gets old! I still discover something new sometimes! Halo 1 is like an action version of a chess game. People never get tired of playing chess, and I never get tired of Halo 1. It's always different each time you play it, because you can decide to use different strategies and the enemies do different things in response. So it's never exactly the same twice. It's so much fun. This is very unusual for me because I never play the same videogame more than once or watch the same movie more than once. Halo 1 is probably better than a lot of much newer games because they put so much into it and did such a great job on it. Halo 1 has definitely been a very special, life enriching experience. The story is epic and grand. It really sucks you in, like it's a real world. I think it's as good as any science fiction novel. So after I finish playing through Halo 1 again, I plan on playing Halo 2 and 3 again. I can't wait until Halo 4, which I'm sure they will make even though I haven't heard any announcements yet. They couldn't possibly end a game series that has made far more money than any other game series and has sold a lot of xbox and xbox 360 units.
Now for the multiplayer. There are still people playing this game in multiplayer mode on the internet. It is very easy to play multiplayer Halo. I found multiplayer to be a bit amusing but not extremely engaging or addicting. It is possible to play online using a 56K dial-up modem. It does work, and I killed some players with it. Just try to connect to a server with a low ping number, otherwise there will be too much lag. It'll probably be much better once I upgrade to DSL. Halo 2 and 3 I'm sure have far better multiplayer than Halo 1, but Halo 1 still has some value. Why else would people still be playing it online.
Fun but no coop - Review written on December 28, 2007
Rating: 4 out of 5
I had a ton of fun playing this game. Two downsides of it though are:
-it came 3 years too late
-no coop?!? WHAT?!
The story is unique, and the game itself is amazing. Many people say that Halo isn't innovative and is overrated, and they have a point- Halo didn't really invent anything. But it did combine vehicles, melee attacks, awesome, easy to use grenades, fun weapons, a cool protagonist, and great multiplayer effectively and creatively for the first time, and the game turned out to be great.
Still, no coop for the PC version. Again, WTF.

I've played quite a few games of this type and I loved this one from start to finish. First, it wasn't too hard for me. I'm old, slow, and I'm playing on a laptop with a touchpad and no mouse (that's the way I want it). The first thing I liked was that there was only 1 CD. Great! and unusual. And yet the graphics were beautiful. From the beginning of play, I loved the outdoor scenery. The indoor scenery was extremely repetitious, but I guess that's how they saved all that space. One of the things I liked best was the humor, something these games usually run short of. The grunts and the monitor are both hilarious. I was daunted in the beginning by not being able to save the game anywhere I wanted. I typically can only get through rough spots by repeatedly saving every tiny move that I make correctly. Here, the game saves itself at predetermined checkpoints instead. I learned to live with that. It made things more challenging, and that turned out to be a good thing. Another extra challenge was the limit of only 2 weapons on board at a time. Since you don't know what's coming up, you don't know whether you will be better off with a plasma gun or sniper or shotgun, and you have to choose. I learned that if you are in a place where rocket launchers are lying all around, you probably should pick one up and take it along. But a lot of times it was a guessing game. The mutants were really creepy, but the game is not gory. I was horrific at driving all of the vehicles, but they were fun and I was saved by the fact that crashing was usually an okay way to land or stop. Overall, this was a highly entertaining game and well worth the time. I just wonder why it took me so long to get to it.
Shockingly short, leaves you wanting something more - Review written on September 21, 2007

I had never ventured into the first-person shooter arena before, and I wasn't even interested. But Halo looked so much like Metroid Prime (which I like and hate because it's a good game, but I don't care much for the first-person shooter change in format) that I decided to give this a try on my PC since I never had time to use the TV for Metroid.
What I liked where the graphics, very good, sharp, clean for the time it was made, very smooth playing most of the time. The sound was merely okay, mostly thumping heart-beat noise to try to make us feel we where in a horror film, doesn't work. I wanted a more spatial, 3-D sound, like Metroid.
What I didn't like, absolutely hated was the control for the vehicles! The move the mouse to move the vehicle thing sucks, the control was awkward and I just wanted to get past those parts. What really annoyed me is the 6-minute ending where you have to race to the end in a combat vehicle through an obstacle course. It took me six tries, and what a pathetic finale!
This game is too short! You don't get to keep anything thing, and when I had the weapons I wanted, the area would end in the next area I'd have default weapons. Either way on and off for three days and the campaign was complete. I don't play online,
I wanted more to do. A new, DVD edition with added content and more expansive areas would do this game justice. The save feature is great, because you never get more than a few minutes behind in game play when you die, so all that you have to repeat is a small area, and it's automatic so you don't need to bother about it. I get tired playing games when I reach a tough area and spend twenty minutes and then die, do it again, die, do it again, turn off game! Halo spares you that.
Over-all a fun, but limited game with no map, no sub-screen, and all your routes laid out so you never get lost, it's a little too easy even on Heroic setting.
Never been a videogame fan... till now - Review written on July 02, 2007

This was the first time I bought something on Internet, but the experience with Amazon was excellent!! The game is absorbing, the story is excellent and you can play it for hours without getting bored. If you want, you can eliminate the blood from the graphics and you are more aware of your own survival and on how to get to the next level than you are on just shooting aliens, so I think the label "mature" is an exaggeration. Anyway, this is not a game for children. I would not buy it for someone younger than, say 18 or 20. If you are looking for a game that will have you on the edge of your seat, on something that is a real challenge, look no further. It is easy to master, you have plenty of chances to accomplish the objectives and there are many options on the quality of graphics, sound, etc., so you can personalize it to the speed and capacity of your computer. By the way, don't waste your money buying a joystick or something, it is much better, easier and accurate to play it with the keyboard and the mouse!
