We bought this for my almost-3-year-old, who was showing interest in blocks. We were looking for unpainted, durable wooden blocks that were large enough to not be a choking hazard for her baby sister. We went through tons of different blocks online and decided on these. These were perfect -- sturdy, large (the smallest is about 1.5"x1.5"x1.5", give or take a bit), varied in shape and size (there are tall cylinders, triangles, half-circles, regular squares and rectangles, arches), a good value and come in a big wooden box that pretty much tests my IQ by seeing how I can get them all to fit back in! I would highly recommend these.

For Christmas, we sent grandchildren the 60-piece block set. Because each household has 4 and a 2-yr. olds and we'd read reviews to get 2 sets to have enough variety of blocks, we sent 2 sets per family. We didn't see the sets until several weeks after Christmas, but saw that there was considerable excitement by the children for building buildings, towers [soon toppled with joy by the children] and creativity provided by the variety of shapes. Like previous reviewers, we immediately saw that glue is needed to keep the sides of the wooden boxes together which hold blocks when not in play or when the boxes are part of the block-building projects, but that is minor negative. Parents appreciated the fact that the children spend hours creating with the blocks, the gift doesn't require batteries or make music or noise [except the occasional crash] and that the children are also learning some principles of physics in the construction of shapes and buildings. We had fun with them, too. Blocks are well-shaped, smooth and seem well-made and durable.

These blocks, though somewhat soft in the wood, are smooth, well formed, and free of any paint. The box is wooden, and the kid can store the blocks in it, making a neat kit. My three year old grandaughter took to them immediately, and next year we're going to spend Christmas vacation painting them in our very own designs. The blocks are somewhat "beveled" on the edges, for safety, so it makes it hard to stand them up on carpet. They are best used on a firm surface. Two sets would make an even nicer gift, with more possibilities in construction.
