This Grass Hog is worth every dime - Review written on September 15, 2008

I am a long time B & D consumer from yard care products to household items. I needed a new trimmer without having to spend a fortune in the process, and came across this little gem.
As the name implies, it eats up(or more aptly through) some of the thickest spikes of grass, to the weeds that are common trouble makers in one's landscape. The two-in-one on board edger works quickly and efficently and gives a great manicured look. If the electric trimmer is more your speed, like me, trust me it is worth purchase price. Way to go, B&D!

I purchased one of these from the local Home Depot, it went through the courtesy reel within the first hour, just long enough to trim and edge the front yard.

the reel cover was extremely difficult to remove, once the dual reel was in and the wrestling match to reinstall the reel cover was over the trimmer proceeded to disgorge itself of the string within the first five feet or so, what didn't attempt to weld itself to the housing, spilled all over my back yard.

This "trimmer" has found a new home at the local landfill, and is the last Black and Decker product that I will ever purchase

I purchased this product to replace a Black & Decker that I previously owned for 10 years. This particular model has adjustable length and uses the same type spools for the string allowing easy replacement when they run out. Since this is an electric model you'll need a long extension cord. We have a half acre of land and it works just fine for our trimming needs. I would buy this product again.

I am on my third Grass Hog and you'd think I am a real fan. I have number 3 only beause numbers 1 and 2 died soon after buying each. This one has not stopped working just some features like the bump thingy. I will throw this device away as soon as I either get another trimmer or this one dies dead. It, honestly, takes me twice as long to trim the yard by having to stop, undo the string holder, pull some string out, replace the holder and go at it. If the bump worked this would be a 4 rated machine. It can make it to 5 if someone at B&D comes up with a way to make a shaft long enough for folks over 5'7" tall. If you are 6'3" I will almost guarantee a sore back from leaning over while trimming.

Upon opening the package I found this to be lightweight and cheaply made. We had a prior model of GrassHog which worked for 8 years so we wanted to replace it with a similar model. This is nothing like our prior model! The filament spool jammed and the no bump feature didn't work at all. It was returned and a replacement was sent. It seems to work correctly but I doubt it will even last a year! Buy something else!

Pretty good, strong motor, cuts very precise, so far it is worth the price, i do not have to change oil and i save on gas. It is my first trimmer, never own a house, so far i wanted to avoid dealing with messy gas, and has been worthed, my neighbors are impressed. This is a good investment. I just have problems with leveling, sometimes is too difficult to know where the timmer is cutting, i guess i will master it with more practice.

I had too many problems with my gas trimmers, so I thought I would give this a try... All I can say is WOW WOW WOW...so inexpensive and less a pain. It just keeps on going....Make sure to get the Grass Gator Electric Multi-Fit or #6610 Electric Replacement Blades ....much better than string in the long haul...

I'm very satisfied with this product, as I have the battery mate to it. Though the battery model doesn't have the power this has, the string units are interchangeable. The battery unit is very convenient for quick trims, but this unit successfully handled everything we had.
String Hog! - Review written on July 12, 2008

Rating: 2 out of 5

I bought this a while back, but didn't use until now. Big mistake. I used it and the string ran out after about 15 minutes of cutting. Very annonying but thought it must have come with a starter amount of string like they do with the starter ink for computer printers.

Bought a new 30 ft spool for $6. You can get string yourself and wind it yourself for about half that much. Put the new spool on and after about 50-60 ft of trimming and edging I was out of string!

Do the math: 1 Ft of string for evert 1.5-2 feet you edge/trim!

I would take it back but it's been too long.

Assembled easily out of the box and trimmed as expected for most of the hour I was using it.

But...I noticed it tended to eject string in areas where there was little grass (for instance, I had cleared out a patch in the corner of the yard and kept my finger on the trigger - so much string came out of the head that it wrapped around the head itself causing it to stop).

This only happened a couple of times, but it was enough to disrupt my trimming and cause me to think twice about how the trimmer should work. I never had to bump it to get string out - it just came out - but I wasn't a fan of having too much string come out, either.

If I had to do it over again, I'd get a trimmer without this auto-feed feature - I'd rather control when and how much string I want to use.

Even though I am an older female, I still like to do yard work. However, because of my age and arthritis I wanted a trimmer that I could use that was efficient but not a huge hog and that didn't weight a lot. So far, the Black & Decker Grass Hog 14-Inch has done just that. I am having problems finding replacement string although I have not yet needed to change the string. All in all, good product for the money.

Worked well until smoke starting pouring out of it. There's a reason they put vents in the shaft! After the smoke stopped it was dead and never worked again.

This thing eats through weeds like a hot knife through butter. Because it has an automatic line feeder, you never need to pause working to draw out more line. It's easy and fun to use. It can be a bit heavy, so you might need to take breaks occasionally to recharge your muscles. Do not even think of using the Grass Hog without wearing shoes that cover your feet (no sandals), thick long pants, and eye protection (long sleeved shirt and gloves are also a good idea). This baby can and will kick up dirt, rocks, and other debris and send it hurling at your face and other body parts. The line will easily cut flesh, so keep your feet and legs away from it! I've used a lot of weed whackers, and this one is easily the best.

More than adequate motor, best for shorter people. - Review written on June 14, 2008

As everyone else says, goes through string fast, but much better than bumping or manual string advancing. I'm going to try re-spooling myself. I was going to buy extra spools, but changed my mind after it went through the first spool in about only 1 hour of use. Did not give it 5 stars due to few factors: 1) Not for tall people unless you like to hunch over. Just right for my kids to use, but I am 5'8" and have to hunch a little even with the longest setting. 2) Bottom motor design makes the trimmer head heavier, which makes you have to push down on the back handle all the time, while holding the complete weight of the trimmer with the middle handle. I rigged a shoulder strap to the middle handle, which improved the handling and weight distribution 100%!

Black & Decker take note: Make the unit longer and include a $2 shoulder strap!!!

I bought one 4.5 years ago and with sporadic use died today. Not sure if I want to get another. Let me confirm what you will read elsewhere it eats line like it wasn't paying for it (buy the three packs). The first three years it worked well enough. The sound isn't so bad, but quieter than gas ones. In a pinch, you can even trim small bushes under an eighth inch in an ugly unsafe way. I used it to clear around their base. I also agree with another review this is a small yard edger on larger one it may get warm.

It has a tendency as it got older to heat the line causing it to stick to itself ont he spool and require manually pulling the line out somewhat frequently. Today the white plastic clutch lock in the spinning head broke so it won't stop feeding line. I'll edit my review once I find out how much it costs to replace the $.25 plastic part.

After what I read about how Black and Decker trimmers use string, I decided to get another brand at Lowe's. As it happened, the local store had only one other brand and the trimmer was not an edger too. So I was "stuck" with the Black and Decker. I had read that the grass hog GH1000 was a Consumer Reports Best Buy but I decided to get the cheaper one so I would lose less money if I had issues with string. I've used it 2 days now and no problems with the string yet. In fact, I've been pleased with how the string has fed so far.

I have used a gas trimmer with a straight bar for years now and it's a bit hard to get used to the contour of this one. Guess that will come with time, though. I also don't find the balance to be quite right; it seems a bit bottom heavy. I suppose that is the result of having used a gas model with the engine at the top. Again, I'll probably get used to it. It's nice not to have to worry about cranking the gas model and it's a lot quieter. Be careful with the cord, though.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised so far.

I'm not sure what was refurbished on this item. The box looked brand new, the machine the same. I just finished using it for the first time. What a treat no stopping to 'bump' and 'bump'. I moved from one area to the next with ease. The edger is also fantastic. It does a great job making , and it's so easy to switch to edger mode.

As far as comfort, I'm 5'2" and have weakness in my right arm. This tool was a piece of cake to manage and to carry. Even my right arm can carry it alone with ease. The pole telescopes. I use it on the shortest level, so I'm sure that it it will adjust to fit any height.

When this works its like the Tony Hawk of weed eaters but I had a problem with the motor belt constantly slipping off. This means taking it apart (8-10 screws) and slipping it back on just to have it slip off again an hour later. Support was wonderful and when I got the new belt it did the same thing an hour later. Engineering needs to use capped gears and when I find a suitable work-around I will be using it again. Too bad one minor glitch sidelines a really great tool. Oh yeah, wear protective shoes, this thing throws lots of flesh tearing line at random.

I've used this trimmer twice now since receiving it and it works wonderfully! It's very easy to operate and is powerful. I think that the reason some owners complain about excessive string usage is perhaps they are not using the fold down wire edge guard. This guard keeps the trimmer at the correct height and keeps string usage to a minimum. So far, I'm very happy with it especially that one does not have to "bump" to feed the line out.

This trimmer has exceeded my expectations. I knew I would need a strong motor to hack down a weed-infested mess in my back yard and I was not disappointed. This trimmer decapitated all but the thickest stems and deployed the string automatically as needed: this feature was the one I had my doubts about before using the product but not any more. My neighbor has a gasoline-powered commercial trimmer that had gagged on the infestation, stalling more than once. He was incredulous about my having no difficulties at all razing the mess.

I heartily recommend this trimmer to anyone needing more oomph.

This trimmer has a few issues. It's auto-feed feature is hit or miss. The wire guide for edging is poorly designed. It flips out of position too easy and will pop out completely. Mine popped out and I'm still searching my yard for it. The trimmer does seem powerful enough. My advice would be to spend a little more money and get a better trimmer.

After doing plenty of research online and reading reviews I finally decided to buy the Grass Hog.
Side Note: My lot size is only 5800 SQ ft. with a 1400 SQ ft House. So nothing too large!

If you are worried about putting this together, Don't worry about it! Only way this would be easier is if you bought it pre-assembled.

Everything to do with the Grass Hog is Easy for a first time owner! The auto feed is great, the guided edger make it look like I know what I am doing, and the rotating blade makes it that much easier to switch between tasks.

My only complaint I have is the it keeps unplugging. You can tweak how drag the cord but still nothing to bad, but I suggest spending the extra $$ for the cordless. Also I have yet to replace the auto feeding string.. Crosses fingers it is as easy as everything else

I give this two thumbs up

I had high hopes for this unit. My biggest thing was getting the nylon twine extended quickly and this unit is better than most, but I wish the nylon was thicker. Maybe there is an after market spool that is thicker. HOWEVER, the first time I used it today the cheaply attached wire edge guard flew off and almost hit me in the face. This is a serious problem and a lawsuit is waiting to happen. I'm still not going to return it because the rest of it is fine and meets my needs. I just leave the wire edge off the unit. I can't believe the design team didn't spend a few extra cents and fix the wire to the unit.

When I first bought this thing I was amazed at its quality operation. The edging is awesome. That was about 2 years ago (coincidence?).

Until I came on here after having the same problem with the line feeder, I thought maybe I was doing something wrong or maybe buying the wrong line. It comes to find out that this is a very common problem with these models. I'm going to try a new spool and see if that helps. I'll report back if I have success. If not I'm movin on to another brand that I'll maybe get more than 2 years out of.
