Matthew Perry is a really funny guy. A lot of people have said his Hollywood moives don't reflect his abilities. Those people are wrong and they need to stop comparing his movie characters to his most famous role as Chandler on "Friends." It's not a fair comparison and they won't enjoy his movies until they stop.
Serving Sara has a funny plot. Joe Tyler(Perry) is a process server. He's pretty good at his job, but has been on the slump as of late. His boss Ray(Cedric) is mad at him and is ready to dump him for Tony(Pastore) if he doesn't stop screwing up. His next assignmrnt is big and simple.
He must serve Sara Moore(Hurley) because her husband Gordon(Campbell) doesn't want to be married to her and he certainly doesn't want to give her any money. Sara is tipped though of Joe's plans and it doesn't work. She gives him a proposition though. If he can serve Gordon, she will give him half of the assests that she gets out of the divorce. Joe sees his chance for millions and decides to take it. Now the race is on in Texas to see if Joe can do it, before Tony catches up and tries to serve Sara.
Matthew Perry is great in this movie. There isn't a better guy in Hollywood that uses sarcasm as well as he does. His timing is perfect in the movie and he takes the character Joe and runs with it. He's serious during the serious parts and he's funny as anything during the funny parts. I love Perry when he's working with the bull on the farm.
Elizabeth Hurley is great as well. She plays her charcter Sara well. It is kind of a miscast for her, but she still works. She is as hot as ever in the movie, and is really there just for eye candy.
Bruce Campbell is awesome. This guy is the man and so few people have ever heard of him. This isn't as funny as his role as Ash in the evil dead series, but it's certainly a change for him. He's funny doing the typical Texas stero tpye baron. His fans should be pleased with his performance.
The rest of the cast is great as well. You have to like Cedric the Entertainer. This guy is funny and I love all his anger management toys he has.
This is a funny movie. Is it one of the greatest comedies of all time? Certainly not. Is it a funny movie that is worth a cheap buy or Rental? Absolutely. If you are willing to look past a few flaws, this movie can really be enjoyed, and like I said earlier. Matthew Perry is Joe Tyler in this movie, not Chandler..don't let the comparisons ruin the movie for you.

When Sara (Elizabeth Hurley) is served divorce papers while she is in New York, she is stunned. Not about to lose the fortune she amassed with her self-serving Texas husband, she makes an offer to her process server, Joe (Matthew Perry) that sets them off on a wild trip across the country. Honestly, this movie was actually better than I thought it would be. This movie is very similar to another movie starring Matthew Perry titled "Fools Rush In", 1996, also starring Selma Hayek. The movie is about a man whose struggles to be successful at any cost and slowly learns what is important to him. He struggles to reach his true goals, as Matthew does in "Serving Sara". Like "Fools Rush In", "Serving Sara" is light humor with little or no real point to the movie. In both movies Matthew Perry plays a funny guy who works along side of beautiful women, and in the end is able to accomplish his goals.

This movie will take you from NY, to Florida, to Texas and back and you will be on a whirlwind attempting to keep up with Matthew Perry as he attempts to 'serve' Sara. Millions are at stake and Perry has to decide between his job and Sara.
This movie has some very funny scenes with Perry competing with another from his firm in serving the papers that will end the suspense.
This is a fast paced movie, Perry is very much in Character with Hurley playing the 'straight man.' With Perry everything continues to go wrong. That is what makes it so funny, what will think up next??
A small "serving" of humor - Review written on December 21, 2003

The local video emporium was having a "two-fer" deal, so I picked this up as my "bonus" movie when renting "Bruce Almighty." And while I have to say that "Serving Sara" is nothing special, my wife and I both thought it was every bit as good as "Bruce." Of course, that's not much of a compliment; "Sara" is really pretty lightweight.
The plot, such as it is, is just a contrivance to send the various characters ricocheting around the country in search of ... well, opportunities to fall down, get punched, and endure embarrassing encounters with livestock.
The acting is adequate, but no more than that. Best in show goes to Cedric the Entertainer, who is on-screen perhaps 10% of the time. Elizabeth Hurley is quite the hottie, especially at age 37, but her acting skills are minimal. Matthew Perry is his usual slightly-snide self. And Bruce Campbell gives HIS usual deadpan performance.
Overall I'd give "Serving Sara" a LOW three stars --- more like 2.5, actually. Worth renting if there's nothing better on the shelf.

This is a fairly humorous movie starring Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley. Perry serves Hurley's character with divorce papers, not after his colleague warns her about it, so he will lose the deal. Hurley's character is in shock over the divorce, and learns that if her husband is served with papers first, he will have to come to New York rather than her going to Texas, and he will owe her money. In order to do this though, Perry's character would have to backtrack and ruin his reputation. She writes a contract that he will get 10% of her earnings if he serves the divorce papers to her husband. This works out to be about a million dollars, so he jumps at the chance. Hilarity ensures in a bunch of funny scenes. The only problem is Perry's colleague is on the case and trying to serve the papers to her first, so they constantly try to trick each other. It seems unethical and unrealistic, but in the spirit of the movie, it makes it more funny. Overall it was a funny movie, and the cast was well suited for these parts.

Serving Sara (2002) is a love story with many comic/tragic interludes.
Joe (Matthew Perry) is a process server who delivers legal papers and has a clueless life (makes wine at home but never seems to get it right for once). One day he serves elusive Sara (Elizabeth Hurley). But he has no idea what that was about and going to change his life and his Vineyard dream.
It's unquestionable there are some vulgar, absurd, "sad" moments in the movie; yet these numerous "tragic" events are there only to push the theme even further. Some direction here too may only be so much arduous as its succinctness and directness approaches the near "ancient" tragedy in the sense of Romans and Greeks. Much of it has to be sour, salty, melancholy in order to remove in the process some. As far as screen play goes there are some moments of pause and poetic inter-weavings do connect some loose moments and recovers for the audience some sense of momentum in the direction. Such scene as Joe pursuing Sara in the mid-town Manhattan, the plot-factoring by a "painting" (or life-size "canvas") which divides Joe and Sara, the secondary "key-tossing" between Joe and Sara, the inflection point of Sara's English accent, Elizabeth Hurley's sensitive character-to-real-life juxtaposition, no longer get the same disinterested response from me (so as the scenes involving the romance between Sara and Joe). Everything in this movie somehow coalesces into a well-posed juxtaposition of characters. Some ambitious raillery such as scene involving "Bull's Hind" is a recapitulation against the salt and sour humor and perhaps a reconfiguration of figures (many vulgar scenes with buffoons or "comedians": now the ersatz version, "bull") in the context. If early English/Roman/Greek theaters had not been accused of its comic folly it has now been redeemed somewhat by such carefree and modern association.
A vindication of comedy can go a long way. Likewise the tragedy, its comic errors and sadness, many trivial interludes, the intermixing of judiciousness and absurdity, a modern screen play might want to extend itself further into an abandonment and perhaps the very absurdity itself. But this movie, Serving Sara, is a classy one with "classic" (sensitive, caring, vulnerable) actors (Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley). Its supporting casts too are great. Every detail in this movie is weighed and measured with great care. The chain of events that are led to the final getting-together of Joe and Sara in the Vineyard are portrayed with rationale good enough to be called a poetic justice (the fact Joe's dream has come true). Even to the very ending, there is a tight grip of humanity in the material. This movie is a questionable masterpiece with good workmanship and artistry.

I really loved Elizabeth Hurley, her BEING there, against all odds and appearances. Some tragic sadness is of small consequence when the movie later alters life without meaning to life with some meaning.
A funny script failed by Elizabeth Hurley - Review written on July 02, 2003

Matthew Perry is a New York process server who, in trying to serve divorce papers to a Texas millionaire's trophy wife, gets sucked into her scheme to get revenge on her infidel husband.
The plot and script were amusing, and the cast was well chosen except for one actress - Elizabeth Hurley. Her sex appeal is her only asset in this film (would Sara Moore's pants have been torn off by an airport baggage claim conveyor belt if a less hot actress had played her? I think not.) Her acting is shallow and grows less and less tolerable with every viewing of this movie. Serving Sara could have been a very funny movie that could be enjoyed for years after, but instead will be abandoned as soon as it loses its "new release" status because of the mediocre acting of the second most major character. Sandra Bullock would have been an excellent choice for the role.
This film's screenwriter has obviously never been to Texas, and any Texan would be nauseated by the blatant inaccuracies and character portrayals. Even today, Texans are still portrayed in films as loud, unintelligent, overbearing, and materialistic. The scene where the attendees of a monster truck show whip out guns and begin firing on Gordon Moore once they are told he is carrying the Ebola virus is absurd (Texans don't carry guns around with them, we keep them at home). Also, regarding factual information, when the secretary points out Durango to Sara on a map to reveal Gordon's whereabouts, she points to central Texas, around Austin and San Antonio. Durango is a small, insignificant town in south Texas near the Mexican border. No one with money would hold property down there. Also, Gordon Moore may be stupid, but if he was stupid enough to try to farm in hilly, rocky central Texas, he wouldn't be worth $20 million.
I gave this movie 3 stars out of kindness, because with the right actress, it could have been something worth buying.

Perry plays a down-on-his luck process server who hits his latest victim
with divorce papers from her rich husband. She convinces him to tear up
the papers and serve her husband instead with the process of a million
dollars of the settlement. Naturally, since he wants to be sensitive and
open a vinyard, Perry agrees.
The plot was a waste of time. The movie wasn't funny. The chemistry
between Perry and Elizabeth Hurley is non-existent. Don't watch this [movie]!!
Mildly Amusing (and I won't spoil the plot for you either) - Review written on February 14, 2003

Michael Perry, Elizabeth Hurley.....yes, she's better by far....he just doesn't have that something special......which, of course, is what has made him a star......people just keep watching because they *know* he's almost there.....the key is the almost part.....if he ever gets it, I predict his career will end (because there probably isn't anything to get).
Anyway, this is mildly amusing.....a good film if you don't want to have to think about anything and aren't serious about seeing something *really* funny......it's ok, worth the time to watch as long as you don't expect to be gloriously entertained.
So, without spoiling the plot (why do so many reviewers *insist* on detailing the entire film?).....there are a number of plot twists, most of which you can see coming although there are definitely a couple that may catch you off guard.....I got one big surprise near the end that was sorta fun.....and this is what makes the film worth watching......you can enjoy this one even if you didn't pick it up because of the Friends connection.
Comedy, no romance ... - Review written on January 30, 2003
Rating: 4 out of 5
The term "romantic comedy" doesn't really fit for this very rewatchable flick. It isn't that romance between Hurley's and Perry's characters is unbelievable, only that the film never sets it up. There are no moments, no sparks, no intimacy, no true sexual tension. Suddenly, really without preamble, the two are together.
That said, I thought it was hilarious. Perry's character has a certain enjoyable caustic bite that his character in Friends lacks. The dialogue is clever. Some sight humor and a bit of scatalogical comedy, without an overwhelming gross-factor. And Hurley is ... well, delicious.
Most important, rewatchability. If you like the flick at all, you can definitely watch this one many times without boredom. Not a dust catcher.
an OK romantic comedy - Review written on January 23, 2003

One can look at the cover and tell right off the bat what it is, and besides being a girly chick flick romantic comedy starring Mathew PErry, Elizabth Hurley, Bruce Campbell, and Cedric the Entertainer. However this particular title provides some decent laughs for both sexes.
Serving Sara is about Mathew Perry who is process server. Basically he delivers court orders to a prticular person, and hopes he doesn't die. He's good at his job however until he seems to hit a two month rut, mostly caused by one of his associates Tony. Elizabeth Hurly is plays Sara, a beutiful women who is happily married to her handsome husband (played by the always funny Bruce Campbell). Little does she realize that he is cheating on her is about to file for divorice. Cederic plays Mathews Boss who is giving him this one last chance, an easy job. However when he (Perry) goes to deliver the papers she ends up giving him an offer he couldn't refuse. At this point the comedy really begins as the movie turns into a romantic, slapstick, physical comedy.
The main problem with Serving Sara is that the focus on PErry and Hurley, there funniest moments are shown in the trailers. FOr the most part the movie when it focus on them turns into utter blaw at many moments. In fact it is the Bruce Campbell and Cederic who really light up the screen when they are on.
OVerall Serving Sara is not utter drek that many romantic comedies end up being. However with a fairly lack of focus at times and the fact that some of the humor does backfire makes this movie a renter only. A good date flick, but certainly something not worht owning.
Serving Sara-Better Than Expected - Review written on October 24, 2002

I honestly was very eager to see the Matthew Perry film, Serving Sara, also starring gorgeous Elizabeth Hurly. The films was actually quite funny, but was occasionally your average american comedy, with some vulgar and crude humor and obscene language. Matthew Perry, plays Joe the process server, who must force Hurley's character so sign papers to make her divorce official, which she actually really wants later on in the film. And of course from here, both Perry and Hurley fall in love and inimately want each other, ohh how romantic. The film is decent but is somewhat insipid and apathetic. Serving Sara is rated PG-13 for Crude Humor, Sexual Content and Language, so an acceptable choice for preteens, but perhaps one that should be researched or looked into first. Hurley and Perry were yet alone worth seeing the film, especially Hurley I might add. Directed by Reginald Hudlin, this film lacks brains, but is worth your time and money...

Let's face it.Matthrew Perry and Liz Hurley are not the greatest actor and actress in the world but in this movie they make up for everything that they did wrong. This movie is not only funny but it is fun to watch. The plot makes the movie fun and the small scenes and one liners that they stick in are hilarious. Everybody told me not to go and see this movie but whatever they said about it was wrong. The thing that makes a movie good in my point of veiw is the plot that the writers give the movie. The plot in this movie is not only funny but it also has a little bit of heart added into it which I think is the perfect combination. Also the genre.Since this movie is a road ceomendy which are my favorites I think that is what gives it it's good looks.Well the movie is good and could be one of the funniest movie of the summer but what is it about?I have been ranting about how good the plot is for the past few lines. Now see for yourself.
The Plot:Joe Tyler(Matthrew Perry) is a shady process server who has to go around to people and tell them that they are being sued and then has to touch them to make it official.Since people don't want to get served and when they do they want to kill Joe this doesn't really make his job easy.Joe used to be the greatest process erver untill along came Tony who is always finding the people Joe needs to serve faster then Joe finds them.Joe hates his job.He gets picks for an assignment worth 5 grand and Tony gets angry and tips the girl who Joe has to serve,Sara Moore(Liz Hurley),saying that Joe is going to come and serve her.She runs away and Joe chases her around New York.Joe's boss Ray Harris gives Tony the job and Joe learns that Tony is always tipping off the people he needs to serve.Joe gets his revenge and serves Sara and sends clues all around the place to get Tony far away.Sara decides to go back to Texas where she lives and bumps into Joe on the bus where she learns that if her husband who is sueing her serves her first then they could have the trial in Texas thus letting him get most of the money while if Joe serves him first they have to have it in New York.Sara tells Joe that if he rips up her papers and serves her husband first then she will give him a million bucks.Joe agrees and they travel to go find her husband.Meanwhile Ray sends Tony off to find Sara and the race is on.
The movie may seem a little complex but it really is not.The movie is great and funny and if you havn't seen it yet I suggest that you see it now!
ENJOY!

I cannot believe anyone could have found this turdfest funny or even interesting. This was one of the many, many examples of a waste of film and talent, well film anyway. First off it starts with one of those dubious legal things that seems to apply on TV and in the movies but I doubt has much chance of happening in the real world. It seems one has to serve divorce papers in person and if the servee can avoid the server, then the divorce isn't legal or something. This is cause for all manner of whacky hyjinx where someone is outrunning or hiding from someone with papers. I guess one could stay married forever if they can outrun the server. I think this is from a page of movie law like "double jeopardy," you can shoot your husband in broad daylight and it's legal, yeah...right. Of course we are treated to lots of goofy characters in New York (where Sarah is to be served) dumb Italians, a black man who resembles Don King etc. Soon the...plot thickens and we are down in Texas for some Texas sized stereotypes. Stetsons, cowpies and guns...oh my. This film expects us to believe that experienced ranch hands will think that a British women and a New Yorker driving a rented car are veterinarians "we forgot out equipment" they say, oh yeah and the bull needs help making little bulls so someone has to [help]....Ha ha ha. At least the bull had fun. This was one of those films where you truly feel sorry for everyone involved, especial Liz Hurley, she's pretty but lets face it, she's a little long in the tooth to be running around in a Daisy Duke, Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader get up that Jennifer Love Hewtett wouldn't be caught dead in, and flashing her [breats] (from the rear) for a free motel room. For this lame story to work everyone had to be a complete moron, even in the end it seems the bad guys can't tell time allowing out heroes to save the day by going into a monster truck rally. No, I'm not kidding. My list of the 10 worst for 2002 has grown by one.
