I love this album. I have been listening to their music for countless years, and never tire of it. All the songs here are true classics. Everyone here contributes in their own way.I would place this album as my favourite Fleetwood Mac album (of the Nicks/Buckingham era). This is the album that contains most of Fleetwood Mac's best songs. There is "Rhiannon" that features Stevie Nicks on lead vocals. Go Your Own Way, Dreams,The Chain, Don't Stop and most of their best music. Beside defining 70's hit radio, they were highly influential. You can hear how the next generation of people were influenced by their songwriting style. Just listen to 10,000 Maniacs, Jewel, REM, Smoke Ring Days, Sheryl Crow and dozens of others who were consciously or unconsciously hearing this music. The music of Fleetwood Mac is simply great. their voices, the lyrics, the melodies, the instrumentation, everything.

I recently got "The Very Best Of", and it confirmed my feeling that the "Greatest Hits" album was just not enough. This 2-disc collection includes every track the "Hits" disc had, and almost every track it didn't have, plus numerous pictures and a nice history lesson. Besides the obvious choices, I'm really happy this has "Silver Springs", "Landslide", "Second Hand News", and "Seven Wonders". "Gold Dust Woman" and "Family Man" are also nice inclusions. Overall it's a wonderful collection for any level of fan, and shows how many great songs they really did release. It'll go great with Stevie's "Best Of".
A lot of filler on single and double editions - Review written on August 07, 2005

The term "very best of" is often misused in the record industry. It is someone's opinion, and in this case, Warner Bros. This compilation includes most of their impressive works but wastes valuable space with fillers such as "Family Man", and the live "Big Love". In UK and Australia, a single disc edition has been released which also features three of the original Fleetwood Mac songs (Man of the world, Albatross and Black Magic Woman) - these are welcome additions and demonstrate an important part of the history of the band well before Nicks and Buckingham came on board. There are a few fillers even on the single disc which could have been better used for classics such as "Silver Springs" and "Hold Me" (these two appear on the 2-disc edition).
What I do like about both compilations is the inclusion of the radio edits of "Rhiannon" and "Over my head". These were previously hard to find, and I must say I prefer these versions. I have the album versions already so this is a real bonus to me. I would have liked to see the radio edit of "Say you love me" thrown in too, but I guess Rhino couldn't get their hands on it.
Overall summary: I would recommend users importing the single disc edition which is a fine collection (although like the 2-disc version, not perfect). As always, listeners owe it to themselves to check out the original source material ie. the studio albums (Rumours, Mirage, Fleetwood Mac and to a lesser extent "Tango in the night").
SHAME ON THIS COLLECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Review written on May 27, 2005

Another in a long long long line of collections (greatest hits, best of, very best of, definitive, ultimate, etc) that DOES NOT DELIVER THE GOODS!!! This cd would be a 5 star masterpiece, but NOOOOOO, the label had to go and screw us good by including the damn live version of Big Love instead of the studio version. The studio version of Big Love and the addition of the song "Save Me" would have made this 2 cd set COMPLETE. Anyone who is a fan already would have The Dance anyway. Why RUIN a hits collection by adding a live version of one damn song!!! It is completely unnecessary and makes this "Very Best Of" very incomplete. Shame on the record company for perpetrating this sham and shame on the band, one of my all time favorites, for letting them. Either put all the studio versions of HITS on a HITS cd or don't release one at all!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never Break... Never Break the Chain! - Review written on April 24, 2005

Fleetwood Mac has gone thru many incarnations exploring blues, rock, and experimentation. This collection takes you from the 70's thru today spannng 3 decades!
The Mac changed line ups several times and after Peter Green's departure the band recruited Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks who had recorded previously under Buckingham-Nicks. This added to Christine McVie (formally Brit Blues-Chanteusse: Christine Perfect) gave the core members John McVie and Mick Fleetwood a much stronger line up of talents.
Now armed with three singer songwriters the group rose even higher with early singles like the mythical "RHIANON" and the amazing selections from RUMOURS their penultimate album whose great songs include here such as "GOLD DUST WOMAN", the airy bewitching "DREAMS", and "DON'T STOP", "THE CHAIN" and the rockin' "GO YOUR OWN WAY" to name a few. The band then entered thru another experimental era via Lindsey Buckingham on TUSK a double album that spawned the title track as a hit single performed with a marching band. Another hit from TUSK is Stevie's dreamy "SARA" which makes you want to 'drown in the sea of love'!
Of course around this time the group began to splinter due to tension among the shattered relatioships. The band members went their own way (wink!). One fruit from the solo projects is an accoustic live version of Lindsey's "GO INSANE" performed with the band in 1997 live...an incredible addition to this package.
Stevie Nicks of course soared like the white winged dove to the pop charts extablishing herself as an important singer/songwriter but returned with the group for the MIRAGE album which spawned the amazing Buckingham-McVie duet "HOLD ME" and the Nicks swirling perfumed hit "GYPSY". It wouild be a few years later when Christine brought everyone back and recorded the album TANGO IN THE NIGHT which brought out "SEVEN WONDERS", "LITTLE LIES", "BIG LOVE"(here a great live version is presented), and Christine's angelic tune "EVERYWHERE".
Lindsey soon parted ways and the Mac replaced him; but the magic had drained away and everyone disbanded again. It would be about 10 years later when they reunited for the RUMOURS anniversary tour and live album THE DANCE which spawned the hit "SILVER SPRINGS", an amazing omitted track from RUMOURS oringally on the b-side of "GO YOUR OWN WAY". The original studio version is included here.
The songs in bold in the bio are included in this anthology which span the lives of Fleetwood Mac and help cement their music and magic!
A great gift for both the die-hard MAC fan or the newcomer to great music! Enjoy!
Not A Loser In The Bunch - Review written on April 17, 2005

Fleetwood Mac is the one of the few bands truly deserving of a two disc "best of" collection. From Stevie Nick's amazing songwriting prowess to the rest of band's craftsmenship in making their songs come alive, they are truly worthy of a career spanning anthology.
"The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" contains all of the band's biggest songs that put them on the map back in the mid 1970s' and early '80s, including "Say You Love Me", "Rhiannon", "You Make Loving Fun", "Don't Stop", "Go Your Own Way", "Dreams", "Sarah" "Hold Me", "Gypsy" and "Little Lies". All of these songs have been digitally remastered for the finest sound possible in today's modern world.
"The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" also contains the lion's share of classic album tracks and minor singles that rarely get any recognition, including "The Chain" (which was somehow absent from the previous single disc collection), "Gold Dust Woman", "What Makes You Think You're The One", "Seven Wonders", "Everywhere" (one of my all time favorites), "As Long As You Follow" (very mellow, got me through a lot of long car rides as a kid) and "Paper Doll", to name a few. I really like some of the stuff that usually gets a lot of criticism from fans, such as "Family Man" (though the music for this one sounds like it cmae right out of "Donkey Kong) and "The Sky's The Limit".
The producers made a wise decision by leaving off everything from the first five years when Peter Green was in the group and the incarnation without Byckingham or Nicks from the mid 1990s', when they released the horrid "Time" album. The only thing I wish they did with this collection is added solo hits from the three members who actually had them: Buckingham ("Trouble"), McVie ("Got A Hold On Me") and Nicks (either "Stand Back" or "Talk To Me"). Other than that, everything you could possibly want is hear. Definitely a must have.
70s Supergroup Doesn't Disappoint....Too Much - Review written on January 09, 2005

This is a well-chosen lot of songs that surpasses the 1988 Greatest Hits collection by far, by including many lesser known but equally important songs. One of the best things about this CD is that it does not flow in chronological order - the song list is arranged to complement the previous and next song, giving the CD a more artsy feel and sound.
It is my estimation that no "Greatest Hits" or "Very Best Of" will please every listener - especially these days, no matter who the artist is. Since the advent of CDs in the mid to late 80s the concept of the "Greatest Hits" album has changed. Before that time, the Greatest Hits Of... was really a Greatest Hits album with no filler and no new tracks. Since then, record companies can release "Greatest Hits" after "Greatest Hits", leaving off certain chart hits and including others, forcing fans to buy all the semi-Greatest Hits releases to get all the hit songs. This set is a must though for casual fans.
Though all the hits seem to be here with Fleetwood Mac, there are a few glaring, unfortunate recordings that should not be here. Lindsay Buckingham's live "Go Insane" is just horrible. And I cringe when I hear "Skies The Limit", from their unfortunate early 90s AC effort "Behind The Mask", as they all sound old, tired and ready to retire. These cuts really do damage to the overall quality of the entire CD and without them, I would have given the CD 5 stars.
Those unfortunate songs excluded, this is a great CD. All their 70s work is classic and sounds superb. The songs that made them ("Don't Stop", "Go Your Own Way", "Dreams", "You Make Loving Fun") are fun to listen to, yet it is their lesser known album tracks included here that really make this listenable. Stevie Nicks is a superb songwriter and it shows with the haunting "Storms" that closes out disc one. Her "Gold Dust Woman" and "Gypsy" are finely crafted, equally attention grabbing songs. Christine McVie has a pretty voice that shines on "Songbird", "Over My Head" and "Little Lies". Also key on here are the rockers "Seven Wonders", "Second Hand News" and "Think About Me".
Fleetwood Mac is a classic example of a band's individuals with personal turmoil creating art out of their misery. Though their 90s output was far inferior to their introspective 70s and 80s recordings, they continue to endure. The classic #1 hits may have cemented their reputation as legends but their lesser known, interior-seeking, dark, exposed nerve-ending songs made their overwhelming success seem human and real to the rest of us mere mortals.
What an AMAZING collection - Review written on October 13, 2004

One of the best musical groups in history now has a 'greatest hits' album that does them justice. Every song from 'Rumours' is on here except for 'I Don't Want to Know' and 'Oh Daddy'. It spans Fleetwood's entire career (well, when it started with Stevie Nicks and Chrissy McVie that is) and has all of their great songs on two discs. We get classics like, 'Go Your Own Way', 'Dreams', 'The Chain', 'Gypsy', 'Little Lies', 'Landslide', etc... but this really was an introduction for me because I only knew all of their popular songs. I was so happy to discover that almost every song (excpet for 'Hold Me', 'Family Man' and 'Sisters of the Moon') is amazing. Stevie Nicks has the sexiest voice in the business and it's stamped all over this album. Chrissy McVie writes some great pop-friendly songs and Lindsey Buckingham's work on guitar is nothing short of amazing. Now this... is music.
1970s' Super Group Finally Gets Their Due - Review written on September 17, 2004

For a band as innovative as Fleetwood Mac, useless hits collections are bound to pop up. In 2002, that problem was solved with 2 - disc set "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac". By far, the best Mac collection ever, it features 36 songs plus a 15 - page booklet with photos, liner notes and track information.
Disc 1 kicks off the set in fine form. In fact, the joy of having "Dreams", "You Make Lovin' Fun", "Go Your Own Way", "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me" coming in rapid - fire succession of each other is alone worth the price of both discs. Also, there's a wealth of underrated masterpieces on here: a haunting solo live rendition of "Big Love" by Lindsay Buckingham from "The Dance", Stevie Nicks' masterpiece "Silver Springs" and Christine McVie's catchy "Love In Store" to name a few.
Disc 2 is even better. Opening with the 1 - 2 punch of "The Chain" and "Don't Stop", this whole disc is practically full of underrated masterpieces. Of course, there's the best song Stevie Nicks ever wrote, "Gypsy", as well as Christine McVie's best compositions, "Hold Me" and "Little Lies". I also loved Nicks' "Paper Doll", which is a great way to close the collection. A few other good songs on this collection are the haunting "Seven Wonders", "Everywhere" and many more.
Overall, a great collection of Fleetwood Mac's best. I recommend it, as well as their studio albums, especially "Rumours", which is one of the greatest albums in the history of rock and roll music.

This 2 CD set includes all of the Fleetwood Mac's hits from albums "Fleetwood Mac" & "Rumours" (Basically it contains the entire "Rumours" album, minus 2 tracks).
"Tusk", "Mirage", "Tango in the Night" are also represented well on this collection. I won't bother to go into every song and whether or not it should have been included in this set, but anything from "The Dance" should have been left off in place of the original. "Big Love", the acoustic and whiny version presented here does not do the song justice. "Go Insane" I guess was a way for Buckingham to sneak in one of his solo hits onto a Mac album. It's also kind of sad to hear a band that was so original and inventive, go from songs like "The Chain" and "Tusk" to elevator pap like "Skies the Limit" and "Paper Doll". I enjoy the early stuff, hits or not, but everything after "Tango in the Night" should have been left to the record store bargain bins. Instead of buying this, look for used copies of Mac's early albums, I've seen them listed for $5 and under, you could probably buy all of them for the price of this one collection.
