Awesome grill for RVing and Nascar! - Review written on May 09, 2008

I saw one of these at a Nascar race. The guy camped beside me had one. He cooked every meal for he and 3 other people on the grill! Since I've bought mine I have cooked almost every day on it. Steaks, chicken, burgers, chops, corn, eggs, baked beans, bacon, pancakes. Tomorrow I'm going to try soft shell crab. It is so easy to use, cooks absolutely fabulous and is so easy to clean... At least one of my friends that has eaten with me over the past month is getting one for her new house. I just saw where Camping World has them for $60.00 off. What a deal. I also got the cooking grate and travel case. I plan to get a full size griddle and another grill section soon. Frugal on gas, too. I only used one of the small bottles of LP for 5 meals at the races last week!

I just got this little grill, and I do love it! After reading so many reviews on the messy cleanup, I decided to try lining the drip pan with foil, it worked great!! I only used it to cook cabobs, but it kept everything clean. I used heavy duty foil, and I think it would stand up to filling with water if you wanted or needed to. After seeing how heavy the wever q is, I am glad I chose this one, and it is so versatile!! Also, you can not cook with the lid down, that is NOT anywhere in the instructions, but I called the company after reading some of the reviews, and they confirmed it is just a grill, not a barbecue. This was not that big of a deal for me, but it might be for some of you out there. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a lightweight, versatile grill, griddle, camp stove for camping or rv-ing! I hope to have this for many years to come!
A good small barbeque, well designed - Review written on July 03, 2007

I read several reviews of this grill, and also the red one with wheels, before purchasing it. I somehow got the impression you could cook with the top down on this one, although understood you can't on the red one. I would probably have gotten the one with wheels had I called Coleman, which I did AFTER the grill was delivered. The Coleman customer service fellow confirmed that they "don't recommend cooking with the lid down." We like our meat cooked clear through (no blood visible), so this was a problem. I solved it by using some metal shelf bracers, which I line up with the open side down and the pointed side up, 3 in a row, which holds the lid up enough to keep the handle away from the heat, but still cooks everything through. Incidentally, the instruction book is not really clear about the lid issue. It says to keep the lid up while lighting it - but not while cooking with it - but Coleman recommends not cooking with it down also, as the handle might melt. It would have been a lot more intelligent for Coleman to offer options for handles - with unmeltable being one option and meltable being another! - and at least make the one on here removable so you can rig up something yourself if you want to put the lid down.
Despite this, I like the grill, it's a nice size, and I like the griddle and stove top burner options - makes it great for cooking when it's too hot in the kitchen. I made roasted vegetables on the griddle side and salmon on the grill at the same time, for a full dinner without using the stove in the kitchen. I find the 'non-stick' grill difficult to get clean - the grease seems to stick to it and I have to soak it for hours to get it clean; and will probably invest in the cast iron options soon. This is our first barbeque and we will get lots of use from it. I don't want to sound as though I don't like it - but I do want to make sure everyone knows what to expect. I am still trying to figure out if the wheels would have been worthwhile. We won't be moving this around that much, and it's certainly lightweight enough to carry if we do - so I think this is a fine option. Overall, I think it's a good choice. Since we got a good shipping price from Amazon, it was worth buying it online rather than locally - something to think about.
Good grill, cleanup a serious issue - Review written on July 03, 2007

I have had this grill for 3 seasons and we use it as our primary grill. Basically, 3-4 times per month during the summer we make burgers, steaks, dogs, etc.
Overall, this grill does a nice job cooking things, but the cleanup is really a headache. I truly don't know why more folks haven't commented on this, but you have a tray in there that you must fill with water. The grease drips into the tray and, inevitably, at the end of the session you have a grease-water mixture with all sorts of nasty debris floating in the tray. You now have to dump this somewhere (like behind bushes or into a grease can) and then wash the entire thing which is totally gross. Compared to say, the Weber Q (which my neighbor has), this is a nightmare for cleanup.
In terms of build construction, it is fine for a portable grill I suppose, but again, much flimsier than the Q. A strong gust of wind blew it down and now the legs do not work well and are bent.
In sum, not a bad grill, but I think things like the Q are superior in terms of build quality and cleanup for a very similar price.
Actually, I would rate this great little grill 4.5 stars - Review written on July 01, 2007

My wife and I recently purchased a pop-up camper that came with a gas grill that attaches to one of the outside walls. It hooks up to the camper's LP gas system via a hose, making it very convenient, but it didn't produce very much heat and it took way too long to cook even hamburgers.
Since I generally do the cooking while we're camping, I started looking at portable grills to take with us instead of the camper's grill. After seeing the red Road Trip at a store, I did some research and decided the blue Road Trip would be perfect for us. My wife resisted at first, but finally relented after becoming frustrated with the (lack of) performance of the grill supplied with our camper.
We purchased the blue Road Trip, as well as an extra griddle, grill, and adapter hose for a 20 lb gas tank. We used the grill this weekend for cooking burgers, hot dogs, omelets, bacon, and scrambled eggs, and for heating various buns and rolls. Overall, we are very pleased with this grill. Set up is a snap, it is reasonably stable even on uneven ground, it heats up very quickly and produces lots of even heat. I know some of the reviewers said that you cannot cook with the cover closed, but I had no problems doing just that for the short periods of time it took to cook the foods we did. I also found the water pan to be extremely useful, both in eliminating flare ups and in making clean up easier. I didn't find that it made clean up difficult or awkward at all, as some others have. I just carefully poured the water into a 5 gallon bucket until I could dump it later. And using plastic utensils instead of metal should protect the finish of the cooking surfaces.
The only quibbles I have with the grill are very minor. The adjustable pads on the bottoms of the legs don't have 'stops' on them, so they easily unscrew all the way off the legs. And the slots around the perimeter of the griddle allowed the eggs to run off and into the water pan if I wasn't quick enough to prevent it. I think in the future we will probably add the stove grate to our other accessories so we can use a frying pan.
I rate this grill 4.5 stars instead of 5 only because I don't believe any man-made creation could ever be perfect! :)
was a great little grill when it worked - Review written on June 13, 2007

I buy alot of stuff on Amazon, but this is my first review. I bought this grill in time to take it on a 4 day trip to a Nascar race. Even though we had a 32ft class A motorhome, I intended to use this grill to cook all the meals. Worked great for 2 days. cooked burgers, dogs, chicken. and pancakes in the AM on the griddle. the grill produced far more heat than I would have thought. However, lunch on the 3rd day - grill would not light. I was using a large propane tank with the accessory hose to retrofit. plenty of gas in the tank, and teh hose was working fine. the ignition was sparking, but no gas to the burners. I can only guess that it is the regulator assembly on the grill. in any event I ended up cooking burgers in a frying pan on the stove for a day and a half. I was not happy about this. I've emailed customer support at Coleman, and gotten no response. I called the 800 number, but it was busy. I ordered the regulator assembly replacement for $22(incl shipping), and it should arrive in 2-5 weeks if I am lucky. the webste warns that it may be longer for parts during the summer. I may just have gotten a lemon, but my experience with this grill has not been too good
The BBQ grill that is not a grill ... - Review written on June 05, 2007

While the Road Trip Grill comes fully assembled, with great design features, outstanding QA inspections, and the solid, professional performance I have come to accept as the 'norm' for Coleman products - it simply is not a great grill. The water tray is the biggest disapointment. When the day is done, you have take this filthy, greasy pan filled with noxious water, grease, and food particles to ??? someplace where it is 'legal' to dump the waste. Then supposedly this 'clean' pan is put back into the grill and loaded into your vehicle. What a mess!
The other really big disappointment is the tase of the food. Dry, bland, and tough. After a day in the woods or at the beach, I'm ready to go home after the 1st meal.
