Before Ratchet and Clank, the majority of "toon" third-person adventure games followed the same pattern: perform stupid tasks for NPCs to collect Stars or Shines or whatever, collect huge piles of items that don't serve any actual purpose, and exhaustively explore giant levels filled with nothing. Your protagonist either rarely or never spoke.

Ratchet and Clank provides you with sensible missions. The only thing you "collect" is money and occasional secrets. Ratchet and Clank are active participants in their adventure, and have character, motivations and goals.

And need I mention that instead of jumping on things' heads you get to blow them away with a huge arsenal of fascinating weapons, ranging from a Han Solo-style blaster pistol to an armed inflatable decoy?

If you're looking for a "toon" shooter or platformer that lives up to the promise of being an interactive cartoon with a wicked sense of humor, providing great gameplay and a memorable plot and characters, you've found it.

I love the whole R&C series. My copy of the first one got scratched badly and wouldn't play any more so I hopped on Amazon and bought a replacement. If you haven't played any of the series you should check it out.

Started playing Ratchet and Clank with the second one all the way up to the latest PS2 one. Thought I should play the original. Wasn't as fun (though the ps3 one is pretty cool) but I enjoyed it. Game came as delivered.

This is a really good game with creative weapons, worlds, and enemies all combined into one really good game

I had played all the later ratchet/clank games before this one. Enjoyed them a lot so decided to get this one. Although the controlls are a little jerky compared to later games (to be expected) i really enjoyed playing this one.

Great game with a lot of challanges. Kind of a mix between Sly and Jak but with it's own twist. The only thing I do not like is the fact that you have to keep flying around in space to get where you need to go, it is fun at first but gets old real fast. Other than that I think it is a good game and I can't wait to get started on the next one.

I started the R&C series with the 4th game, Deadlocked, and worked backwards to this one because of availability. As they BUILD ON EACH OTHER and there are substantial benefits to playing them and finishing them in order, START HERE! The game is amazing. There is great depth in game play as well as story. I only have a couple gripes; No strafe (corrected in later games), and the difficulty of game play fluctuates a little more than I like, from slam-dunk easy to an expectation of perfect moves/key strokes for an extended period of play. The puzzle solving and multi layer story are a nice addition to the huge selection of weapons and equipment you accumulate as you blast your way through many different worlds. Try it and you will be hooked.

Ratchet & Clank, what a game! I bought this merely by reading the reviews of it and I have to say, I was not disappointed. Think of him sort of like Mega man. Ratchet has a wide array of weapons that are diverse and work for multiple tasks, of course, once you start getting the better weapons you'll want to stick with them, but it doesn't hurt to have the weaker ones on your arsenal. Work your way through a decent amount of levels, blasting and shooting your enemies to find bosses and rewards that lead you to the creature who wants to destroy planets in order to create his own (I can't remember his name). The game also provides you with extra fun things to do, such as finding golden bolts (which, later in the game, can help you get a better, more powerful weapon) and skill points, such as completing x/y task in a certain amount of time, or not being hit or destroying flying saucers or landing in a certain place. I'd suggest that, before you finally beat the game, you use an online walkthrough and look for everything you've missed, be it golden bots or skills points, not only will it make the game longer, but you'll also collect bolts for the must have RYNO, expensive but oh so worth it weapon. Other than that it's a game worth buying, and don't be scared that it may be a little old (since it actually have 3 other ones) the game offers you great graphics, humor and fun.

My wife, kids and I love this game. It's not gross or offensive in any way. The game control is relatively easy and you can win or buy weapons and gadgets etc. Its story line is humourous and well...i just love this game and the others that follow.

I've played from 8pm to 5am next day playing and taking turns with the kids. They're both under 8 but they're gamers and it was a weekend...sue me. I usually step in when some parts are harder to advance.

Nothing boring with this game. The characters are fun. It is a blending of shooting enemies (no blood or gores, just bolts), racing, treasure hunters, strategy and more. The environment are great. I gave 4 stars, because the 2 following ratchet and crank games are better (5 stars indeed), but this one is also a must have.

This is chapter one of the Ratchet and Clank series, and will be on my top 10 games list until the day I die. The levels are fun, and the humor is well placed (you'll know what I mean after you meet the plumber).
What will most appeal to people will be the weapons. There are just sooooooooo many to choose from! Whereas many games with hoardes of weapons are tedious and frustrating, Ratchet and Clank sells itself due to the variety! Right off the bad, you get your permanent melee wrench and a bomb throwing glove. Then a flame thrower, then a blaster, later a sniper rifle-like weapon, rockets...and even one that turns enemies into chickens! It's insanely fun, and as you proceed, you can buy upgrades for the weapons, making them better and sometimes more fun!
The story is amazing, and the levels are fun. Ratchet and Clank is simply a must have. And check out Going Commando and Up your Arsenal too. this is a series that just keeps succeeding!

I love Ratchet and Clank, its probably my favorite game. It has great graphics, cool weapons like the RYNO (best weapon in the game). It has a great storyline and nice landscapes and backgrounds. Its definitely not a waste of money. The bosses are easy, the things you have to kill are easy,
its easy to understand what to do. The cut scenes are pretty funny too.

Ratchet and Clank is a super fun game, probably one of the best I have ever played. Almost everything about it is great. The characters' personalities are really well-developed. The plot is also very thought out and also has unexpected twists in it. The background music, the weapons, the enemies you have to defeat, they are all very detailed and just add to the game's awesomeness. The most stunning thing is the extreme attention to details. The graphics are so detailed that it makes you feel like you are right there with them. I highly recommend this game for anyone who is looking for tons of fun.

Ratchet and Clank is a great game and one of my favorites. The weapons and gadgets are fun and unique (my favorite is the pyrociter) and the game features many worlds, all very different from each other and offering something new.

The weapons range from a flamethrower (pyrociter) to the morph-o-ray (turns enemies into chickens) and worlds range from War Battlefront to a Space Outpost to a Tropical Island. Even after beating the game and getting every gold bolt/skill point, I still used to play it over and over (before my game broke) just because I enjoy the game. It's not all that hard to beat, but Ratchet and Clank is fun and enjoyable.

If you are a fan of the Jak series (or a straight out RPG fan for that matter), you will like Ratchet and Clank (although I myself prefer Jak over Ratchet). What are you waiting for? Go pick up Ratchet and Clank and "blow $%&@ up" (Insomniac).

The designers at Insomniac Games had the perfect formula here. The storyline, the controls, the variety of weapons and gadgets, the creative characters, the worlds to explore...all fantastic! I know I am a little late to review...since this was released in 2002, but this is a fun, puzzle-solving platformer that is better than all the platformers I have played in the past. This should be alongside the classics...Marios, Sonics, Crash Bandicoots, etc...

We got our PS2 for Christmas and we also received Ratchet and Clank - it's a great action game and easy to learn. My sister and I take turns playing and find all sorts of cool weapons and gadgets and it's really fun! We like the movie clips too. We're so glad Santa brought it for us because Ratchet and Clank is now our favorite game!

This game is one of the best games in my collection. Its fun and easy to learn, the controls are simple, there is a wide eray of weapons one of them being a gun that turns guys into chickens:).Another thing I like about this game is that you can play it over and over again i have had my ps2 for three or four years and this was the first game we got, every year or so ill dig it out of my collection of games and beat it a couple times. It's a great game for younger gamers its not that hard to understand and most of the puzzles are easy enough. I have'nt tried any of the other ratchet and clank games. I just never got around to it because this game had such a high replay value. Trust me if you are looking for a good cheap platform game this is the one.

My brother and I started out with our Neighbor's "Up Your Arsenal" game and loved it. Upon getting our own PS2, we decided to get the original. This has got to be the best game I've ever played, and the same goes for my brother.

This is a super fun game and easy to learn. If you are a gamer, this would probably be a thumbs up game for you. You can get all these cool weapons. If you have heard of the game Jak and Daxter, you would like this game at least 2 times better, but Jak and Daxter is really fun too. On this game you can buy all sorts of cool gadgets. If you get a weapon called the Rhino Gun, you can blast all kinds of villains and robots. If you like games like Shark Tale and such, you would probably not care for this game as much.

This is one the best 3D Action platformer ever. I would rate this along with Super Mario and Sonic. The cool things about Ratchet & Clank are

6. Very very easy to understand (some games make the gameplay tough and thereby unappealing).
7. The game is very structured, every level has a set of missions to be completed and it is very well organized.
8. You will never ever get stuck at any point in the game(in some games like Prince of Persia , I got stuck at a level for a long time which made me not like the game)
9. The difficulty level rises gradually, forcing you to enjoy every moment of the game.
10. Easy controls which makes jumping, fliying , shooting, aiming extremely easy.

I bought this game at gamestop for 10 bucks and I enjoyed this for more than 4 weeks. I did not play any other game until I finished this. Dont miss this game.

My 6 year old has player this for 2 years. When we first got it for Christmas 2 years ago we spent the whole holidays playing this game. The whole family was into it. We are still hooked on it. We have the whole Ratchet series and have beat all of them, and are still wanting more!

This is one of the greatest adventurous challenges to land on Earth. Ratchet & Clank is actually funny, action/adventure where you must save the galaxy from the scoundrel, Chairman Drek and his robotic crew. Ratchet & Clank join together to stop this evil madman. This is nothing compaired to Jak and Dexter.

I have never played #2 or #3, but from what I've read and heard, they have all the parts of this game that I didn't like amplified. I originally rented this years ago in a quest for a new platform in between Spyros. It was kind of cute, but everything just seemed dull and repetitive. No puzzles, missions, or anything. Just firing at enemies. Eventually I got to an area where I couldn't find the way through, passed the controller on.

I've always been a huge fan of platform/adventure games, so when I saw Ratchet and Clank, I knew I had to play it. But I did'nt have a Playstation 2. So, 3 years later I finally got a PS2, and the first game I bought for it is Ratchet and Clank. I hoped It would be good.
I was not dissapointed. The Ratchet and Clank series has quickly become one of my favorite video game series because it's diffrent than any other adventure game i've ever played. The characters and worlds are very well- desingned and the voice acting is excellent. But it has to be the crazy weapons that are the best part of Rachet and Clank. I could'nt wait to find out what gadget I was going to get next.
The only problems I have with this game are that you can't easily obtain bolts, so it's hard to get all the weapons quickly and the hoverbord races are a little tedious. But these were both fixed in the sequel, and they don't detract any enjoyment from this instant classic.

This is the BEST action game I bought for PS2. I am also a Spyro fan and if you played the Spyro games (I have all of them) you will LOVE this game. I have all the Ratchet and Clank games and the characteristic that is great about each of the three is that they keep getting better from version 1 to version 3. I DEFINNITELY recommend buying this game.

Pros
All of the weapons are creative and fun to use.
It has a good story line.
They have clever obticals to go through.
The monsters are cool looking.
They infobot videos are funny so you won't get too bored playing the game.

Cons
Everything is very easy to do.
When clank commands the little robots you can't call them from very far away, so if one of them dies you have to go all the way back to the beginning to find them.
It is hard to get bolts because there are no arena battles for money, you have to destroy boxes and kill enemies and that takes a while.
Hover boarding is a little tedious,annoying and hard to win.
Overall this game is very good, but sometime gets frustrating and
I would say this game is about as good as the next Rachet and Clank game.

Is one of the best games I ever played!! every single level is different and unique in its own way. For some games you beat a level and boom its done with. But in this game your going back and forth in between level and different paths. the graphics are amazing through there are some glitches. The bigest problem is that you press a certian butten(triangle)to switch weapons but it doesnt pause the game so you enemies are still running around trying to kill you while your switching out weapons! Also the weapons are cool but most of them stink. overall I would give it a four and a half because of the weapon thing. I recomend you buy this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do think this is a good game, and it's lots of fun and crazyness, but it's incomparable to _Going Commando_. My only real beefs with this game are that you can't quick select and freeze the game; everything is in real time, so you have to make sure you're either far from any danger or quick with your fingers. Also, there are no weapon upgrades, and as for Nanotech, there are only four units that can be lost before you die. If you want to upgrade your Nanotech, you have to *buy* upgrades, and not just earn them. There is no strafe, which can be quite useful with multiple targets.

But this is not to say that I don't LIKE this game; on the contrary, I think it's quite addictive and fun. Some of the weapons are pretty cool (I'm especially fond of the Glove of Doom, with the four mini-robots which jump out and destroy closeby targets), and some of the gadgets are pretty nifty. All in all, I'd give this game 3 1/2 to 4 out of 5.

This is my 3rd fave game currently. Its just so much fun here is the good and bad.

Pros:
-Great animation and environments
-Funny scripts and characters
-Great weapons such as the R.Y.N.O.
-Huge replayability. You can go back and find "Gold Bolts" and "Skill Points" you may not have found earlier and you can revisit bosses, races, and jet fights.
-Really good gameplay!It has a really comfortable control system and seems oddly familiar

Cons:
-Gathering money takes really long to get new weapons especially the R.Y.N.O. which comes at a whopping 150,000 bolts!
-You cant revisit turrets
-Some enemies wont appear again after you beat the game
-Hard to figure out how to use cheats!

As you can see these are really silly cons. Who needs cheats anyways. Using cheats to beat the game sucks. Dont let any of the cons keep you from buying this game. [...] Go buy the game you [...]!Scurry!!! Git!!! Hurry!!! Now!!! Fetch!!!
