A good attempt at trying to bring some change to the series. - Review written on March 30, 2008

Now a lot of people think this game doesn't live up to the Mario name, well I disagree. The platforming and level design aren't the best in the series, but they're not the worst either. In my opinion, the platforming and level design are actually better than most other plat-formers out there. Now, for years the Mario series has been merely running and jumping, but now they tried to throw in something new, a little water cannon backpack. Some may argue that it is annoying to use and detracts from the game-play, but in my opinion if you take the time to get used to it, it ends up adding something new and somewhat refreshing to the mix. If you are desperate to go back to the basics there are a few neat levels with weird visuals and zany music in which you simply try to get through the level in time, and with no water cannon backpack. I thought these were a good addition and mixed it up a bit. The difficulty was pretty hard at times. I know there were some levels that took me a long time to finish. The soundtrack is nothing to get excited about, but I guess its not really bad either. The visuals look pretty good, but some people will argue that its not "realistic" enough, I think that the day Mario starts looking realistic is the day I stop buying Mario games. The water effects in particular are surprisingly good, and the water reacts to your movement. Overall I'd say give it a try, you can probably get it for cheap now anyway.
Much Better Than Many Say It Is! - Review written on November 27, 2007

This game has been picked on for so long that I just HAD to step in and defend it! This was the first big Mario adventure since Super Mario 64, and I thought that it delivered everything that it should have and more! I had such a wonderful time playing this game. Spraying the jetpack, riding Yoshi, collecting coins and shine sprites etc. And that cool, tropical music...ahh! Everyone keeps saying that this wasn't as good as Super Mario 64, but I thought it was way better! Super Mario 64 didn't even have Yoshi, except as a brief cameo appearence on top of Peach's castle. No, Yoshi isn't the only reason I think Sunshine is better than Mario 64, it's just ONE of the reasons. Spraying all the goo off of thing's with the FLUDD jetpack is much funner than it sounds! And this game also gave Mario's arch enemy Bowser a voice for the first time ever! And Peach? What can I say, she's as cute as alway's. I guess that's why Bowser keeps kidnapping her again and again! ^,^
The bottom line is, don't let anyone tell you that this game sucks, because it's totally awesome! If you missed out on this game, then you missed out on a HUGE moment in the Super Mario Series! It will alway's remain a classic.
Very Disappointing - Review written on July 12, 2007

When the first Mario game came out for the NES, your goal was to rescue the princess from bowser--an evil, fire-breathing turtle/dragon boss.
A little more than a decade later, and Mario is running around watering plants and hosing off sidewalks. What the heck happened?
In all seriousness, this game is extremely disappointing. The graphics in this game are almost no improvement over its N64 predecessor, and the controls are sloppier and more frustrating (the water pump controls are very awkward and take a lot of getting used to.) On top of that, the camera behavior has become even more irritating than before. It's not uncommon for the camera to swing around behind a wall and make it difficult to see what the heck you're doing. You'll find yourself adjusting the camera very often, which isn't exactly my idea of fun.
The overall look and feel of the game is strange. Many of the levels look basically the same, the enemies lack creativity, and the music is just bad.
On the plus side, the game does have its moments. Some of the bosses are fun... that's pretty much it.
If you are a big fan of the Mario games, I'd get this just because it's cheap and is a good back-up game for when you get tired of the really good ones (like Super Smash Bros. Melee.) However, if you're expecting this to be a step above and beyond Super Mario 64, you're in for a disappointment.
Very summery game - Review written on May 15, 2007

SMS is definitely a gorgeous game to look at and a perfect game to get you in a summertime mood. The perfect blue skies, glorious sunshine and beautiful water effects make you just want to pass through the screen and into the Isle of Delfino in the game itself. Mario vacations in this sunny resort only to find it's covered in pollution when he arrives. So now it's up to him to clean it up across the various levels and worlds.
It's one of those games that you can just keep on playing over the years and even put aside for a while before going back to it. It doesn't really have the same charm in the winter months however. The music, the graphics, the humor are all cute and colorful. It makes for perfect escapism.
However, the designers have simply tried to cram in too many controls on the Gamecube pad and, as a result, it's a very hard game to control. Many levels and missions require precision manoeuvring and can often take several minutes of painstaking balance and ascension only for it all to be undone, as Mario plummets several hundred feet, by a tiny little flaw in your button-bashing. It will seriously drive you C-R-A-Z-Y.
Had it not been for this, I would probably have stuck with SMS to the end, but I had to just be done with it once and for all, otherwise I would have chucked my Gamecube at the wall.

Incredible, Mario's best game yet! - Review written on April 08, 2007

My Uncle bought me a GameCube that was bundled with this game. I never forgot the day.
I put the disk into the newly plugged in system and immediately noticed I could instantly play... on the file select screen! It wasn't much, but I had fun screwing around with all the blocks.
I started on File A, and I saw the graphics. They were astounding! I had only played NES and N64 before, and I was attached to those. The first thing you get to notice is Mario's "new outfit". His overalls are lighter, and he wears his shirt rolled up. I ran around looking for something to do, and I came across the little toy thing, and it gave me a newer look.
The storyline is twisted. Mario is framed for covering the city with goop, although it is really a phony Mario. Thus, Mario must clean up, and return the Shine Sprites in order to restore sunlight in Isle Delfino.
For the gameplay. Now, I like to nickname it "Super Mario World 64". Why? Well, we of course have Mario doing some moves from the classic. The spin jump, for instance, does the opposite of it's original. It makes you go HIGHER. Mario is also able to pick things up. Also from SMW is Yoshi. He is used for his juice-squirting abilities and his eating, as in Super Mario World. Instead, Yoshi needs fruit to stay out of his egg form. the "64" is self-explanatory, as the game uses many things from Super Mario 64.
"Once you get all them shine thingys, you're done. Boooorinnggg."
Wrong. You not only have more items to collect, but you are able to explore the free world. Beating the game unlocks a special Shirt that you can wear with your sunglasses, another nice thing. Besides, as in every game, you got speed running to do!
You may remember "L is Real" from Mario 64. This time he is real! No, not for playing. He is in the 5th picture of the end credits. See if you can find him, and keep in mind, he's a jumper! ;)
Overall, it's a 10/10. Incredible graphics, gameplay, replay value, and fun. Lasts a long time!
Newly minted Mario fan - Review written on April 05, 2007

I'm a pretty old school gamer who played Donkey Kong in the arcades, and the original Mario Bros. game as well. I liked them but I wasn't crazy about them or obsessed with them.
I've also played the Super Mario Bros. on the older Nintendo systems. These were a bit more fun and involved but I think I only actually finished the first one. Great games to be sure but again, didn't become a giant Mario fan like some people.
I bought an N64 system and played Mario 64 for awhile. This was a pretty cool game as well but again, didn't love it. In fact I liked it the least of all of them if I'm being honest.
Now I'm a parent and bought a used GameCube recently, since I promised my daughter a Wii and couldn't come up with the goods. She was young enough not to care and was happy to get a GameCube, and she enjoyed playing the couple Sonic games I bought for her to start off. I tried playing them myself and they were pretty bad games, so I went in search of something better.
So I picked up Super Mario Sunshine. I thought to myself I probably won't like this game, and my initial impression was, "What a pain in the butt, I have to clean up all this gunk? What kind of game is this?!?" So I didn't really play it at first. But my daughter loved it (she is 6 years old) and was able to capture approximately half of the shine sprites in the game on her own. It is definitely appropriate for her age.
But she would need help with certain obstacle courses and such, so she'd pull me in to play since I had some "skillz." Not bow hunting skills or computer skills, but Mario playing skills. At first I was just doing it to help her, but eventually I got to really enjoying the challenges. I began to see how interesting and fun the game was, and I started my own "save" of the game and started going through it on my own.
Now I'm convinced that this is one of the best games I've ever played, not to mention the best Mario game in my opinion. It's not just because it's fun and has a lot of variety and depth, but because it's truly an all-ages family game, which I appreciate. Even my 3 year old son, who never plays any other video games, loves to jump around and spray water and carry fruit around. He doesn't really go after the shine sprites although he knows they're the goal, and he's managed to really develop a sense of the place and can find his way around. I didn't expect him to have that capability at his age, and I think this game may be good for some aspects of his brain development (but maybe I'm going too far heh, after all it's a video game!).
The atmosphere of the game cannot be understated. The music is fantastic and throughout the whole game you truly feel like you're on a vacation to Mexico or Disneyland or something. I had a crazy experience recently where I actually did go to Mexico with my daughter and we stayed at the Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay resort, and she said "This place looks like Super Mario Sunshine!" That was cute and everything, but the creepy part was one evening while lounging in the lobby bar with my wife and daughter, the piano player started playing old Super Mario Bros. music! Just weird I tell you.
Bottom line is that I'm extremely impressed with how much fun this game can be for people of any age, once they give it a chance. Now I'm a Mario fan eagerly anticipating the arrival of Super Mario Galaxy (once I get my hands on a Wii)!
Good game, but with flaws (rounded from a 3.5 star) - Review written on January 02, 2007

Super Mario Sunshine was one of the launch titles originally included with the Nintendo Gamecube, and represents the hallmark name in the Nintendo lineup. Mario is back armed with "FLUDD," a backpack device that spews water to knock out enemies, help Mario hover, rocket you around the screen, or even propel you sky high. It's a versatile tool that's lots of fun to play around with.
The graphics (particularly the water effects) in this game are outstanding. Water ripples as it should, splashes just right, and never ceases to amaze. The colors are vibrant and exciting, and there is no lack of eye candy in the game.
By the same token, sound is good. Voice acting is hardly standard in Mario games, but you get several scenes of it here. The rest of the talking is gobbledy-gook accompanied by on screen text, but it is still well presented. Music is atmospheric and hardly epic, but it serves the purpose.
Game play is also diversified from other offerings with a full arsenal of moves at Mario's disposal. He can bound off walls, balance on a tightrope, and climb cages (in addition to the aforementioned FLUDD moves). It's fun just to run and jump around levels with Mario trying out moves.
So why knock the game down? Well, to start with, the camera. As you run up against walls and obsticles, the camera all too often gets trapped behind a wall, or cannot rotate where you want because of something in the way. So it becomes a chore at times to get your view pointed where you want. Also, there is a high frustration factor here. I appreciate difficulty, but when a 20 minute trek inching your way to the top of a structure is nullified by a slight misstep that finds you back at the bottom of the level, it goes from hard to just annoying.
Finally, I found there to be a slight lack of variety in levels. Although the levels are beautiful as I said, there are not many, and you simply play them 8-10 times over with only slight variations for different challenges.
All in all, this is still a good game, and I recommend it for a GameCube collection. If nothing else, it's Mario for crying out loud! But it is not a game without flaws, and you should take note of them so you know what you're getting into! At the current price ($20), it's worth it, though.
