Review no.63. Twenty track CD release of all of Foreigner's hits they put out, between 1977-92. Has it REALLY been that long?Yes,I guess it has. All the great arena rock cuts your mind simply cannot forget are here, like "Feels Like The First Time" (my personal Foreigner favorite), "Hot Blooded","Double Vision","Urgent","Dirty White Boy",their signature tune "Juke Box Hero", their ballad "Waiting For A Girl Like You" among others.Only problem I have with Foreigner is these days on the tour circuit, they seem to tour with EITHER vocalist Lou Gramm or guitarist Mick Jones.Have these two parted ways for good?Would like to catch the band with both players. That'd be good.
Definite but not Complete - Review written on August 24, 2006

It may be hard today, given their footnote status in the history of rock, to realize how huge Foreigner once was. They were, however, one of very few groups having three albums among the top 50 best selling ones during the 70s. The records are:
22. Foreigner - Double Vision (7 Million Sales)
38. Foreigner - Head Games (5 Million Sales)
42. Foreigner - Foreigner (5 Million Sales)
Their forth album, 4, also sold as many records and actually elevated them to international super stardom. After that their album sales began dwindling but they still managed churning out a few hit singles.
Since their break up, a number of compilations by Foreigner have been released. The main ones are The Very Best...and Beyond and Complete Greatest Hits. The former one was close to being perfect with two major problems though. The first problem was the addition of 3 new songs, all of which were stinkers. Luckily those songs were the first songs on the CD so one could simply start on track 4. I know one could go on and on about such and such tracks should be included but releasing a Foreigner compilation without Long, Long Way from Home as this compilation did can't be justified. This was one of their biggest hits on Rock stations, basically a staple on such stations and also a top 20 hit. Omitting that song is similar to deleting Let the Good Times Roll on a Cars compilation, not a huge hit but a staple at Rock stations. It also omitted Blue Morning, Blue Day but that is not the same travesty. This was rectified on this compilation, Complete Greatest Hits, which really has all their hits (including one of the before mention stinkers which albeit became a minor hit at Rock stations) but has one problem; the songs have been in many cases edited. The name of the compilation is thus not correct since some of the songs are not complete and really should be called The Definete Collection.
Recently Rhino released a double CD compilation which rectifies the above problems. That collection contains all the hits by Foreigner plus practically all the main album tracks. There is hardly a track I miss unless maybe a few of Double Vision, which is my favourite Foreigner album. What is maybe of even greater interest for many is the fact that most tracks are presented here in full length, I Don't Want to Live Without You the only exception I noticed. Being more of a complete collection rather than a definite one, it includes a few avoidable tracks.
The re-mastering job is very good on both compilations. Comparing the sound to the Very Best...Beyond release brings forth a subtle yet clear difference in clarity. For audiophiles, the difference is still obvious.
For the casual fan, this collection is the one to get, despite having edited versions. For those who really want the full length versions and some added album cuts, The Defenite Collection is the one to get.

Reviewing greatest hits albums is generally a waste of time, but whatever. This certainly has every Foreigner song that I've ever heard on the radio that I can think of, plus quite a few more. If you like the Foreigner songs you've heard on the radio, check it out. They're here too.
Foreigner are the sorta band that punks love to trash-- They're very over the top, overproduced and so on and 'I Want to Know What Love Is' is unquestionably the least punk song ever written. The irony of this attack is that punks tend to be boring, pretentious twats whereas Foreigner is actually *fun* to listen to, and they strike me as far less self-important than your politically inclined punk bands. (Now don't get me wrong, there is quite a bit of good punk music out there, but it exists in spite of their moronic incompetence=authenticity philosophy, not because of it.) Certainly, aspects of this are dated, and I don't always always take it 100% seriously, but most of these are just fun, catchy songs, no matter how you look at it. I suppose Foreigner could be called the ultimate guilty pleasure as far as I'm concerned, though I hate that term.
I'm primarily a heavy metal fan, so my taste for Foreigner may seem a little strange, but it actually makes quite a bit of sense, when you think about. The parallels between AOR and power/classic metal are pretty obvious: They both generally center around the soaring, over the top chorus. Metal songs usually have some interesting riffs to back it up, but the root of the interest is in the chorus. Suffice to say, Foreigner knows how to write an overblown chorus, and Gramm has the perfect voice to work with this sorta thing. Take any song with Dio singing on it and put Gramm in his place and it'll mesh just perfectly
This compilation isn't 100% consistent, though it's better than I'd anticipated it would be. It is, actually, almost uniformly excellent up thru track 14, after which point they determined that guitars weren't cool anymore. I actually still kinda like most of this later stuff, but it actually proves to be too much, even for me. Anyway, maybe half of this compilation is totally classic: 'Feels Like the First Time', 'Cold As Ice', 'Hot Blooded', 'Double Vision', 'Blue Morning, Blue Day,' 'Head Games', 'Urgent', and finally 'Juke Box Hero' which is the greatest song of all time, last time I checked.
Yeah, I'm done. I like Foreigner...

FOREIGNER-COMPLETE GREATEST HITS: Foreigner was no better or worse than any number of the slick rock outfits clogging the pop charts from the mid seventies through the mid eighties (Boston, Journey, Styx, etc.) and certainly some of their moments outshone others. Like many groups that came out of the gate strong, their momentum and quality ebbed rather quickly, to the point where oldie tours and greatest hits compilations were all they had left. COMPLETE GREATEST HITS is just what the title implies---all the superior stuff from their first anthology RECORDS, plus plenty of less enthralling efforts (read: ballads and schlock) representing their later years. Lou Gramm's vocal wallop and Mick Jones' melodic guitar sense on FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME, HOTBLOODED, LONG, LONG WAY FROM HOME, and the sax driven URGENT are equal to any pop singles of their era; even anthem JUKE BOX HERO is decent dumb fun. But with the exception of their choir enhanced mega hit I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS, nothing after their fourth LP warrants "hum in your head" status, and certain pieces (SAY YOU WILL, THAT WAS YESTERDAY) are downright anemic. So stick with RECORDS and FOUR and your Foreigner collection will really be complete. RATING: THREE DIRTY WHITE BOYS
Not sure about all these single edits! - Review written on October 27, 2005

This album is just like Sultans of Swing - The Very Best of
Dire Straits. Edited songs. I can't believe they edited songs like Hot Blooded, Urgent, & Jukebox Hero I hate these single
edits. The worse edits would be from the Dire Straits greatest
hits with Money for Nothing, So Far Away, Heavy Fuel, Brothers
in Arms, On Every Street, Calling Elvis, & Private Investigations
. Anyway, this album is great and boy this is way better than
Foreigner 4. I can't stand Lou Gramm screaming like that album
has. There is only 1 good obscure song from 4. I think it is
I'm Gonna Win. The rest of the album, the only good songs are
the 4 bigones that are on this compilation. You know them
all, Girl on the Moon, Urgent, Waiting for a Girl Like You,
and Jukebox Hero. Foreigner 4 is one waste of money just like
Brothers in Arms 1985 from Dire Straits. I think they go better
together with that. Anyway, the best song on this compilation
is Dirty White Boy. Cold As ice is also great! The last track
Say You Will rocks really hard. This album is recommended for
any heavy metal fan, so go buy this masterpiece along with
Making Movies from Dire Straits today, with the lovely songs,
Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway, & Expresso Love.
