Bad Experience Here - Review written on September 04, 2008

I have not had the experience of so many others here. The item is not easy to set up, one must be careful of the blades surrounding the borders of the slicer inserts. Not easy to clean, made mush of the tomatoes, and potatoes.
Sorry, my experience rates this one star.

Hey this is great! I thought I'd end up spending $100.00 bucks for some fancy all-steel mandolin...then I found this. It does what it says. It's easy to clean. It works. Period. I don't use the food holder (gulp). I just make sure I am paying attention to what I'm doing, because this thing is SHARP.

I just unwrapped this thing, and after figuring out how to put the extra julienne blades back, am already in love with it.

I had some overly ripe tomatoes that I wanted to slice up for sandwiches and general snacking (why is it things always taste better bite sized or thinly sliced?).

It takes about two seconds to figure out how to use the safety handle to slam through a bunch of fruit or veggies. Within less than a minute, I had eliminated 3, soft skinned tomatoes in even super thin cuts that would have required sharpening my knife and much thicker, sloppier cutting than I would have preferred. The leftovers in the handle was minimal.

For cleaning, it was just a rinse immediately after using (as you should with any sharp kitchen tool to prevent scrubbing/injury).

If it can handle my kitchen nemesis of almost-worn-out-it's-welcome veggies, I'm sure oranges, potatoes and everything else will be a cinch.

For the price you expect a good product, and this is very good. You don't need one this expensive though. I love mine, and the locking mechanism is a great feature, but it doesn't lock the other blades, so it's not entirely "safe." Needless to say, I keep it far out of reach from my children. A mandoline is so great though, and every kitchen should have one! You can make "spaghetti" out of zucchini, and slice veggies paper thin for great texture. If you can afford it, get this one. If you are more strapped for cash, get the OXO one, it'll do the job too.
Good Mandoline for the Price - Review written on August 17, 2008

This is a good mandoline for cutting soft vegetables, but it has a hard time cutting potatoes. The hand guard is not made for holding potatoes well and they keep slipping out of the holding tines. I did use it to cut cucumbers to make pickles and onions for a julienne fry, but it takes more muscles to cut potatoes or cabbage. It is easy to clean by just rinsing it off after use, but it doesn't store well as there is nothing to hang it with apart from a v-shape that is near the middle of the back of the holder so it hangs out from the hook I tried to hang it on.

Terrific product at a fair price. Compact design, and slices everything very fast saving quite a bit of time during prep. I can't figure out how to cube effectively but I'm pretty sure it's user error.

Excellent product, Good Value - Review written on August 15, 2008

Rating: 5 out of 5

I am very impressed with this slicer. I bought it as a substitute for a much more expensive mandoline I own that is currently packed away. It performed very well for the task I needed it for (5 lbs of potatoes for scalloped potatoes). The storage box that it comes with is a bit odd, but it does protect the blades and is reasonably compact. We'll see if the blades stay sharp, but for the price I won't even care if they don't last forever.

I just bought this product a couple of weeks ago and I LOVE IT! I have owned a $200 mandoline for the last 15 years and I HATE that thing! I never take it out to use because it is so big and cumbersome to use and wash. This thing is the exact OPPOSITE of that! It slices and juliennes BEAUTIFULLY! It is also easy to clean and store and is a fraction of the price of the stupid stainless steel ones. Don't waste your money on the fancy one, get this and actually use it! You won't regret it.

No clearance for food to fall underneath. Food holder leaves dark markings, giant holes and wasted food that falls off constantly. The slicer's holder is absolutely ridiculous letting the pieces fall out easily which includes sharp julienne blades. It's basically impossible to julienne sweet potatoes on the flimsy blades which was the main reason I bought it and leaves me using way too much pressure towards a very sharp set of blades that just aren't sharp enough to cut what I need to cut. The technique they offer for chopping onions is only a few knife strokes away from just cutting them yourself. Rinsing with water DOES NOT clean it. I have to use soap and water with a long brush right after or food sticks to the plates and in corners. I am pretty sure everyone on here praising this works for Swissmar.

Bought one of these in Austria 15 years ago. I use it daily and it is still as sharp as when it was new. Wanted one for my daughter and looked online to see if the same model was available. It was! It makes awesomely thin slices, small dices, and great matchsticks. I just love it.

Nothing like taking longer to peel and de-stem cucumbers than to actually slice them! I've never used a mandoline before but I can't imagine how this one could be improved. I can't wait to play with this some more.

First mandolin we've ever owned. Actually I bought it for my husband, who loves to cook. He's had it about 4 days and used it to cook 3 meals already. He loves everything about it, except the safety holder. It's not big enough, he tried to slice a vidalia onion in it and had to cut it in quarters to fit. Of course, it's very sharp and you need to be careful. But he did let our 10 year old, shred lettuce for tacos. This is a must have for you if you like(love) to cook.
You HAVE to buy this! - Review written on July 05, 2008

It works GREAT. Plain and simple, this thing will cut through any veggie like butter. The hand guard is very comfortable to grip and keeps your hand very safely away from that sharp cutting blade. I've used it every day since I bought it and even my teenage son is getting into using it. We've made sliced cucumbers, french fries, potato sticks, and potato chips. All were cut REALLY fast and clean up was a snap. Just rinse in water, put it back in the caddy, stand it on the counter and let it drip dry. As long as you use the hand guard, you won't cut yourself. Don't be scared by reviewers who cut their fingers. They clearly didn't use the hand guard. I can see this quickly becoming the most-used tool in our kitchen.

I took time to think about this review and how many stars to give it. For five stars I think a product should cover all the bases, nothing superfluous, but at the same time nothing that seems standard on other models that is not on the one you have. It should also function perfectly. For starters I am in my kitchen constantly and love cooking and cutting. I figure that everything I buy will pretty much be used so often that I can essentially justify spending however much to get what I want, many have enough $ in stainless steel pots and pans and understand what i mean. This time I really wish I would have spent more. For starters other reviewers have stated this is sharp. Oh yes it is, I stopped paying attention (giving proper respect) for just a moment and got my thumb nail manicured without even feeling it. I was lucky. Problem is that when you have to clean this thing good luck!!! It is like tickling the blade with the edge of a sponge, you really can't clean this thing all to easily or safely. Huge problem because other models come with blades that are completely removable and allow for this. Part two of this problem is that it is white and stains so you do need to scrub it real well at times and i didn't run a beet over it until i knew i was upgrading. Surprisingly the beet didn't stain and so far I have found my nemesis to be carrots. When I was looking at upgrades I stumbled on models that had these great safety pusher handles that allowed you to do vegetables lengthwise and even better had spring loaded pushers that didn't force you to get the "feel" for how to push down on the vegetable yourself. Thats what I mean by 5 stars should have all the bells and whistles or come with a caveat "at this price" Also it only allows for basic cuts at 1/8th and 1/4 inch.

I haven't had a chance to use the mandoline much yet, but am very pleased with its performance so far. It did an execellent job of thin-slicing lemons for lemon pie with minimal effort. The item is well constructed and thoughtfully designed.

At first, this looked like it could be a pain in the behind to assemble and use. It really wasn't...and for the wee bit of time it took to get it all squared away (mind you, this was the first time, I'm POSITIVE now that I know how it all works, the next time will be a snap) it made up for with how quickly it perfectly sliced two tomatoes. Love this thing!

This is one of the more often used tools in my kitchen. Whether getting a few onions ready for the saucepan, or making potatoes into french fries, it gets the job done faster than I could hope to without it.

Not a NEEDED component to your kitchen, but a useful one. This particular slicer does a better job than some of its more expensive counterparts. Highly recommended.

The V-Slicer Plus does it all. It is compact and will fit in any space available. It will slice any vegetable with ease, sometimes it so easy I am not aware that it is cutting. It is extremely sharp and you must use the utmost care when slicing and cleaning. Slicing ripe tomatoes for sandwich's
is quick and easy, onions chopped for salsa or hot dogs is a breeze. I cannot say enough good things about this product, it is worth every penny.

I love this thing! It is great for onions. I dice them so fast my eyes don't have time to water! I was doing sliced potatoes for days in packets on the grill. Yum. But be careful! I got bold without the guard and sliced my thumb pretty good. I saw a bunch of reviews warning that it happens, but still made the careless mistake. Just warning you.

Enjoy.

I have had this v-slicer for several weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it. I read many reviews of similar products before settling on this one because of its safety and price. The product is made of sturdy plastic and comes with detailed instructions for use. I always use it with the safety holder (strongly recommended) and have had no injuries or even near-misses (I am a person whose family leaves the room so they don't have to watch when I wield a knife). The slicer slices a variety of foods consistently, quickly, and easily. All in all, I am extremely satisfied. My only negative comment is that the white plastic does seem to stain easily (my first cutting experiment was with baby carrots and the slicer retains a slight orange tint).

I've wanted a mandoline for quite a while, but didn't want to end up with something chintzy. This tool is sturdy, well put-together for both use and safety (they're not kidding, the blades are SHARP!), and is now sitting on my counter to be used nearly every day. It has a "safety catch" to keep the main part from slipping out of the holder, again great for keeping your skin attached to your fingers. Purchase with confidence!

I took a few tries to get used to this and haven't tried anything but the slicing blade yet, but it made great thin slices for homemade potatoe chips. There are dozens of warnings about using the protective grip to avoid slicing your finger off and I didn't take any chances. So far, no complaints here.

I bought this slicer months ago, during a spate of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" watching.

I sliced one tomato with it.

I simply enjoy using a knife to prepare my vegetables, and I don't prepare sufficient quantities to warrant getting this thing out.

Maybe someday.

The product works fine, and I'm sure there are people out there who really benefit from it, but just ask yourself whether you really need something like this.

This slicer is one of the most useful kitchen tools I've ever purchased. I've had mine for about 20 years now and it's still sharp! Much faster than a knife when slicing potatoes, apples, etc. and all slices are uniformly cut. It stores compactly in its holder and is small enough to keep in a drawer.

I am an International Yacht Chef, author of two Guilt Free cookbooks and my knife skills are fine. But when you are slicing and dicing on a 'moving object' in the middle of an ocean, you appreciate all the help you can get. So I bought my first Borner V-Slicer in 1989 and immediately fell in love with it. As long as you use the 'pusher' it is very safe. It take a few uses to get the 'holding angle' right, but I can cut all the veggies for a biiiggg pot of soup in about 1/3 of the time it would take me with a normal knife. I later bought the 'holding bowl' and it is even easier and stores the veggies as they are diced, to be dumped right in the pan of choice. I always took it with me on whatever boat I worked. Now retired, I use it at home constantly. About a month ago, one of the slicing blades bent (after 19 years of 'very heavy' use, so I ordered another. They have changed the design a little, but it is still one of the best kitchen tools ever made. Sam Miles, the Guilt Free Gourmet

I ordered this product after reading all the positive reviews on Amazon and wasn't disappointed. It's a great product. Easy to use. The veggies slice very easily, no pushing and grunting as I did with another slicer I purchased earlier and returned. It's amazingly sharp and well designed so things slice quite effortlessly. I use it all the time for salad ingredients. I do carrots, fennel, onion and mango a couple of times a week for salad. My husband has used it many times for potatoes to make french fries. The only thing I had to be careful of was that if you are using the handle/pusher thing, you have to watch that you don't push the metal prongs into the blades as you are nearing the end of your slicing as your vegetable gets smaller and smaller. Actually, sometimes I use a fork if I only have a little piece of vegetable left and just push on it lightly, or just cut the rest up with a knife. All the pieces of the slicer fit into the container to stand on the counter and won't shake loose. I had looked at expensive stainless steel ones around $100 and thought I would have to buy that to have something work decently, but the V-slicer proved me wrong. It's great! It's not often I am impressed with kitchen gadgets either, most are a disappointment.
Surprising little mandolin - Review written on April 04, 2008

Rating: 5 out of 5

Works just as it should. Easy to use, very durable, cuts fast and stays sharp. Not much else to say. Don't let the price deceive you. I have tried several different kinds over the years and this one beats the fancy expensive stainless ones, in terms of functionality.

I almost rated it 4 stars because the appearance is a bit lackluster. However, that would be doing it a disservice. 4 1/2 might be more appropriate, but I'll round up.

I really, really wanted a mandoline but just couldn't see spending well over $100 for one. Saw the reviews on this and thought I'd give it a try. What a terrific buy! I've had it for a year now. When I first tried it with a red onion, I complained that it wasn't doing anything since I didn't feel any resistance at all. To my surprise there was a pile of beautifully sliced red onions under the machine. No effort at all! After a year it still slices as effortlessly. Just sliced through 5 lbs of potatoes for gratins and home-made chips and couldn't be happier with the performance of this slicer. I don't care for the safety guide (personal preference) so I use a cut-safe glove to hold the food items for faster and more efficient slicing. The glove makes it much easier for julienne cuts since that does require a bit more effort and I seem to fumble with the safety guide. Use caution if washing by hand as it will slice your sponge or washcloth with ease! And the size is perfect so storage is easy. It's sits on my counter top next to the cannisters and no one realizes it's there. It does indeed have a bit of a cheap look to it so I hesitate to buy them for wedding gifts, but it really is a nice slicer!
