I Love Being Here With...Diana! - Review written on March 20, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
I love Diana Krall's scotch with honey voice and amazing piano playing. She really is the modern jazz chanteuse carrying on a great tradition trailblazed by Peggy Lee,Carmen McRae, Helen Forrest, Sarah Vaughan, Kitty Kallen, and Dinah Washington, etc. Anyone that does not absolutely love this performance is - well, crazy! From the smoking hot "I Love Being Here With You" opener to the gorgeous "Cry Me A River", Diana and her band are on fire. For the reviewer that complained about the performance filmed against a black background with black piano and Diana wearing black - I suggest buying eyeglasses. I have a 42" Samsung plasma tv and visuals were crystal clear so I have no idea what he was complaining about not being able to see thru all the black colors. I almost think this was recorded in hi-definition. Even though it was filmed on stage, the lighting with orchestra sitting behind the band reminded me of an intimate jazz club. The sound quality is excellent. The camera work was superb with some wonderful closeups of Diana's fingers caressing the keyboard during solos. I played this dvd for a friend that does not appreciate jazz and she loved it!

Beautiful Music To Hear, And To See - Great Concert! - Review written on September 08, 2007
Rating: 5 out of 5
The Canadian jazz singer and pianist gives about a two-hour concert in Paris and all two hours are very worthwhile to watch and hear. This is good stuff - and I'm not really a jazz fan. Krall is accompanied by five other jazz musicians and a European symphony orchestra, conducted by Alan Broadbent.
This is simply good music by real pros in the jazz business and led, of course, by Krall, who has a wonderful voice and is a terrific pianist. It doesn't hurt that she looks great, too! (Actually, the whole concert is filmed beautifully.) To Krall's credit, she lets her band get a lot of solo time and she's generous with the compliments. I found guitarist Anthony Wilson a particular standout. However, you can see Krall is partial to longtime musicians John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums.) She speaks of them like old buddies, which they probably are.
The first selection is the most upbeat of the concert and gets things rolling. All of it is first- class and gets better and better with each viewing.

A real performer has a presence on the stage, no explosions or fantastical lights to cover a lack of talent; a true musician can stand up, play their instrument, alone, and as the audience, the world seems to disappear, and all we hear and see, is the music.
I remember seeing John Bon Jovi in Europe, playing alone with his acoustical guitar and only a microphone and knew, this was a talented individual...no amplifiers, no sound engineers, nothing but a beautiful voice and a great guitar...and a good song.
The first time seeing the Diana Krall in Paris DVD was at a country hideaway, along with a friend, a partner with similar sensibilities, a raging fire, good food and wine and the only other sound was the pattering of rain on the roof.
Is this too good to be true?
Well, may sound so, but Diana Krall's beautiful face and her wonderful voice filled the space creating a near perfect scene, a room for love, crafting a real and sensitive encounter.
This is a well produced DVD, a concert soon after recording her Look of Love CD, circa 2001, and touring around the world gaining fans from around the planet.
Diana's crew, Anthony Wilson on guitar and renowned bassist, John Clayton, are connected, smiling, and that non-verbal "language", that link between a group of musicians that talk through their instruments, when they know they've hit the mark. The Paris Symphony Orchestra brilliantly adds, their own, astonishing mix of creation and class, to these popular jazz and popular tunes.
For Diana Krall fans this DVD is a pure treat.

Addictive Krall - Review written on September 27, 2006

You could argue that Diana Krall is not a fantastic singer, but she does what she does oh so exceptionally well, which is why she has such a huge fan base. The voice is unique, instantly recognisable and possessed of that essential characteristic of the jazz vocalist - superb timing. This is particularly in evidence in this live performance. She has the delay technique down to perfection, and uses it in a hugely expressive way. Speaking as a professional musician, and a singer, I find her wonderful sultry, husky growl addictive, to say nothing of her stunning musicianship, playing and improvising skills. This DVD is magic - you couldn't find better in its genre than her inspired interpretation of Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You'. I'll listen to this performance for the rest of my life.

I really bought this DVD to see Anthony Wilson play, even though I have heard Diana, I wasn't moved to buy any of her CD's. I am now. The swinging, up-tempo tunes swung hard and the ballads were...well, beautiful. Anthony and his blonde Byrdland just kills it with tone, taste, and hyper-swing. All the musicians are world class players and none disappointed, all can REALLY jam. Usually I'll buy a DVD and have my finger on the search or fast forward button, replaying the "good" parts. Almost all of this is the "good parts". Maybe just a little of it made me want to ride the elevator when the violins came in, but over all this is one of the best DVD's that I've ever bought. If you are a musician like I am, you need to own this one.

I have a friend who is a long-time Jazz and Audio enthusiast.
He recommended Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" CD by saying "You must have this CD, many high-end audio dealers are playing the album for demonstrations because both sound quality and her performance are superb!"
After I heard these words, I went to my favorite record store in San Francisco.
When I located the CD, I found a stack of DVDs titled "Live in Paris" right next to CD shelf.
"Hmmm, it maybe better".
I purchased the DVD instead of "Love Scenes".
I was very impressed by the members of her band.
Especially, Anthony Wilson's guitar playing is truly phenomenal. His technique is really second to none and tonal quality is just what Jazz guitar solo should be.
Base player John Clayton is amazing also. His deep rich tone is superbly captured by digital recording. I suspect that Diana Krall has very talented recording engineer with her for both CD and DVD sessions.
I was so surprised to find Jeff Hamilton as a drummer of the band.
I have been his fan since LA4 days; with his friend Laurind Almeida, Ray Brown and Bud Shank, he recorded so many wonderful albums. I have them all.
What a nice surprise to see him playing in Paris!
Why not five star then?
It's her voice.
I found she is a terrific Jazz piano player; powerful yet lyrical, sensitive and sensual.
She has a genuine talent as a musician, but alas! She is NOT a great singer.
In comparison with Billie Holiday, her voice totally lacks of seductive dreaminess.
In comparison with Ella Fitzgerald, Ms.Krall cannot sustain any note; melodies fade out so quickly because she gets out of breath.
In comparison with Astrud Gilberto, Diana has none of that feminine sweetness; her voice is just coarse and wheezy.
Therefore, very regretfully I rated this DVD two stars.
I believe this disc will be my last purchase of either CD or DVD of Ms.Krall.
