I first purchased this game in 2002 when it came out. I paid around $49 for the thing. And I don't regret one dime I spent!
This was not my first Final Fantasy, but I had had a hard time getting into some of the PS1 installments of the series for the simple fact that...you had to READ TONS AND TONS OF DIALOGUE! (ugh!)
So the first cool thing about this game is the fact that...yay! They talk!
While a few reviews have said that it is laughable at times...and it is true, but It's more of how the audio was placed into the game and the timing of what is said. Not the actually acting itself.
I read another review that said that the FMV's are SOOO LOONNNGGGG and take up SOOO MUCH time. Yeah...if all you do is follow the story line scene after scene! The WHOLE POINT of ALL the Final Fantasy series is to go beyond the story and level up,do the side quests, and find special items and what not. Which can be difficult and annoying...and CHALLENGING. (But isn't that why we play video games in the first place?)
Anyway, this game is incredibly detailed. Can last forever with literally thousands of secrets to unveil, items &weapons to find, and new creatures to see!
The characters and story line are engaging and by the time you've finished the game....you've spent a good amount of time with those guys and find yourself crying at the end when it's over!
This is such an enjoyable game and I'm not sure how many times I've taken it out to replay certain parts or the whole thing over again.
The FMV scenes are beautiful, but regular gameplay is still incredible detailed!
As far as the soundtrack goes there are only two songs that I absolutely despise in the and that's the Chocobo song and 'Victorious' song they play at the end of a battle. (they use higher notes so it drives me nuts!) But I love the game and often find myself humming along to the beats as I'm going along...haha.
I LOVE this game and I'm so happy that they made a sequel to it (a more lighthearted, but just as fun sequel!)
I highly recommend you try it out, and now that it's a Greatest Hit and less than half the price I paid for....it's well worth it.

Ha! i laugh at gamers who have played this game or those who have played this game but never had the chance to finish it, and still give it a bad review. I have played many Final Fantasy games, basically thats my personal franchise i have been into ever since. We'll yet it is more of a movie, let me say this really clear "IT"S THE BEST MOVIE YOU"LL NEVER SEE" this game has perfect voice acting, more like every voice actor fits that character from young Tidus, to creepy Seymour, you'll fall into the story as it goes, and makes you wanting more of each character and how they all react to thier main goal, the animation is great pushing the PS2 to its great boundaries of rending true graphics on the ps2 like God or war, if not better! i liked Final Fantasy 7, and yet even this game made me think twice after that, and im still in a debate towards which one i personally like more, but again for all who say this game is more cinamatic, let me say, what game isn't now these days?, kinds like this game started it, but not really. Nough said.. go rent it, buy it, whatever, but this game is good in anyway, and i never wanted to play it until my cousin forced me to think twice. Thanks Rigo =)

I have yet to finish this game, but from my hours of gameplay thus far, I can already make some evaluations of the game.
First of all, I am a fan of the battle system and method of learning new abilities and improving stats. I like how you are able to switch out characters immediately during battles. I find the red arrow on the map helpful when trying to delay story progression in order to find items and explore the area.
Despite these enjoyable features, I do find many things I dislike with this installment of final fantasy. For one, I dislike the characters- immensely. Yuna is the cliche, innocent, kind, beautiful character- similar to Aeris or Rinoa, but much more annoying and unlikable. Her lines and mannerisms are aggravating (and I am sure I am not the only one disgusted by the benevolent caress she gives Valefor when summoning!) Tidus is also quite aggravating- but he at least has his moments of humorous stupidity. I also find Wakka's Jamaican-like accent a little unsuitable for his character. The most likable character is Lulu, though her cleavage is quite alarming.
Final Fantasy X seems focused on the plot and the massive amounts of cutscreens are done wonderfully, yet leave me longing for more gameplay time.
For all this, I have to say Final Fantasy X ranks as the lowest Final Fantasy game I have played thus far (though I am led to believe that FF X-2 is even worse!)
After games such as FFVII and FFIX, FFX remains a woefully inadequate successor of the FF title.
One of the greatest games I've ever played. - Review written on July 13, 2008

Final Fantasy X was released on the PS2 seven years ago and to this day it still doesn't disappoint me. In fact, this was my first Final Fantasy so its very special to me. This game influenced me to buy all the previous Fantasies and of course the ones after it up to FFXII.
Plot: This is probably the backbone of any Final Fantasy ever created. Every previous game before FFX has amazing stories and this installment definitely doesn't disappoint. You start the story as Tidus, a rising star in the fictional underwater sport of blitzball. From there you travel into several places, some vast and some small, but each place in this world has its own purpose. The character development in the story is also awesome and each character has its own use, although I must say that Rikku and Auron are my ultimate favorites :)
Graphics: Well any Final Fantasy veteran should know that every recent installment is graphically better than the previous one and FFX definitely delivers. Facial expressions on the characters are now installed (like lips moving) since the characters are now voiced! Can I get a hallelujah??? Now the voice-acting is kinda goofy at times but meh.
Music: Pshh...I feel like I dont even have to cover this part since Nobuo Uematsu is composing the music, but lets just leave it as awesome, okay?
Gameplay: Okay the new CTB-system of FFX is probably the weakest point of the game. Why?? I feel like it gives the game a slower feel than the ATB-system but it is more strategical. The sphere grid takes the place of the usual leveling system in usual RPG's and it is definitely the most innovative thing Square has ever come up with in their games. It's fresh and unique, and its probably one of the best things in the game. It is kinda complicated at times but when you get it, you get it.
Difficulty: If you play just the linear game, then I'd say its pretty easy. If you do the numerous sidequests in the game and the optional places (like the Omega Ruins) then you better start training hard. :)
Overall this is a great game to play. I really liked it and I recommend it 100%.
A masterpiece - Review written on May 31, 2008

For years now Final Fantasy games have been providing the gaming world with countless hours of gaming with the remarkable series. And with the exception of Final Fantasy VII, this may be the best one yet.
This game introduces voice actors to the game, which provides a very pleasant change. The graphics are also far beyond any game created to that point. The movie scenes in particular are simply brilliant as demonstrated by the scene of Tidus and Yuna in the water which may be the most stunning display of digital art that has ever been seen.
But once you get past the look of the game you'll find yourself immersed in an intricate story line. It centers around the journey to defeat a monster named Sin and restore peace to the world of Spira. Each character has a distinct personality and early on creates a feeling of care for each one. Underneath the main plot lies a beautiful love story centered around the main character, Tidus, and the summoner, Yuna.
This game introduces a different way of getting stronger in battle with the Sphere Grid. The characters gain experience in battle to get sphere levels which allow the characters to move around the grid. Also various spheres are found in battle which activate the different nodes on the grid.
The Limit Break or Overdrive is also different in this game. a characters Overdriva gauge is charged by whichever mode the character is set in, whether it be by taking damage, dealing damage, defeating a monster, and many others.
Overall, this game is magnificent and will have you hooked from the first time you play it. This game easily stretches into 50 hours of gameplay, and will have wanting to replay it again and again.

I was never really into RPG's before I decided to "try" Final Fantasy X. 306 hours of gameplay later, I'd say it was a pretty good purchase. No other game I've ever played, except for maybe the original Metal Gear Solid for PS1, has captivated me to the point that this game did. I've played all the GTA games, Resident Evil 4, KOTOR, all the Halo games, Gears of War, Bioshock, Oblivion, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty 4, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X-2, and XII, etc. Nothing I've ever played sucked my life away like this game. I don't usually write reviews for anything, but this game deserved special attention. Buy this game. Just don't flunk out of school, or lose your job, or get in a traffic accident by falling asleep at the wheel, because you've been up all night trying to get the sigil to Lulu's ultimate weapon. I have a PS3, a 360, and an Alienware pc. This game blows away every game I've ever played. Period.
The last real Final Fantasy on PS2 (at least for now) - Review written on March 21, 2008

...like I've said many a time...bad regional artwork...
The simplest word to explain this game is...wow! For a Final Fantasy to have so much depth and great battles (turn base beats FF12's system any day) this is the best FF on PS2.
The characters work together so well and the summonings (AKA aeons, GF's, Eidolons, Espers etc...) are the best to be in a game because not only can you level them up, but you can actually choose what they do such as doing a regular attack instead of doing one massive attack and disappearing to there little summoning paradise. The levelling up system is also very good and is known as the sphere grid system. Although most characters have their own parameters and limited to learning specific abilities for masters you can teach one character every ability under the sun (except summoning which is restricted to one character) and you can switch between characters during battle. THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!!!
Some people have said that the side quests are a down side to the game. I disagree completely, although there is no exact plot based storyline there are many things to do (some of the secret bosses are so hard you'll spend hours training until you can take off 99,999 in every hit...I know that's 90,000 more than usual you can take off isn't that great?) as well as many secret collecting quests and one of the most addictive mini game ever (ever heard of blitz ball?) where you buy and transfer players to great the ultimate underwater ball masters.
Now I know, I know these games aren't as great as the PSone titles, but this game is definetely worth getting if you have money and a weirdly large amount of spare time.

Argh...As much as it hurts to say, I felt this game was the end of the venerable Final Fantasy series (thankfully XII revived the series somewhat). Where the previous games encourage exploration with loads of optional areas and scads of sidequests ( i.e. the elemental Dragons in VI, The big materia, WEAPON, and Chocobo raising in VII).
There are a great many things wrong with this alleged "game".
Just to fire a few off, there's the irritating, unlikeable protagonist, his irritating, unlikeable cohorts, the one cool character in the game is also absent for quite awhile, and then there's the lame point A to point B 'exploration'. This game is essentially a long walk from one end of the world to the other, with plenty of those wonderful random battles in between. I never felt involved with the character, and I never had much of a reason to care about them.
In addition, there are the puzzles. Now, the FF series has had a few really magnificent puzzles (Shinra mansion, cough, cough) These puzzles are in fact less puzzling and more frustrating as you...pick up orbs...and place them in slots! Wow! For 1979 that would be groundbreaking, for the 21st century, it's shameful.
On the plus side, the graphics are pretty. Unfortunately the character designs are sub par, and the non-main characters have about as mych detail as the German soldiers in Medal of Honor for the PS1.
The music is mostly pretty good, with "Zanarkand", the opening theme, being pretty much the high point.
I never bothered finishing this game. It felt like a big waste of my time, and if time is precious to you, don't waste 40 hours on this. Not quite money well spent.
Gets frustrating after the 20th hour, monotonous after the 60th - Review written on December 29, 2007

I'm into my 3rd decade playing video games. I started with role playing games (in fact, I started with Final Fantasy - no number after that; I mean the original). I picked this up as I was getting tired of action games. Graphics are pretty nice, and the story line is decent. However, I find that once I hit the 80 hour mark, and still haven't finished, it's getting awfully stale. And you'll find three of the most inane, stupid, and poorly programmed mini-games ever created in this single title. The most annoying is the Chocobo races - how this horrible crud wormed its way into this title, I'll never know. It looks like it was programmed by junior college kids as a term project; it's completely unplayable, unenjoyable, and gets in the way of a mostly fine game. Stupid chocobos.
Second place has to go to the just as silly, just as unplayable and unenjoyable capture the blue butterlies mini-game. And third place goes to dodging lightning bolts 200 times, consecutively. That's right, you mess up just ONCE, you start all over. If I had known I needed to complete these stupid mini-games to level up my characters, I would never have bothered this title and moved on to a sequel, or another RPG altogether. I swear, I've had more fun painting - it's certainly less painful.
I must say though, this game did succeed in one thing; it rekindled my interest in action games! So, if you like to be infuriated by a game for redundancy, idiotic mini-games, by all means buy this title.
