Thriller has nothing on this cd - Review written on November 06, 2007

I didn't give Off The Wall 5 stars only because I know Michael Jackson wasn't as talented as people and the media made him out to be.
The artists that wrote, composed, produced, and played the music for MJ consisted of guys from Toto, Steely Dan, Louis Johnson from Brothers Johnson, Quincy Jones. MJ was a puppet in the music industry, and without the backup of real musicians, he would of been nothing.
Of The Wall is by far his best musical endeavor. It's a lot more raw, soulful, and funky than anything else he ever put out, including Thriller.
This is the only MJ cd worth owning as far as I'm concerned.
But I most certainly own all of Prince's cds, because Prince was (and still is) the REAL DEAL!

Don't get it twisted, Thriller is a better album than Off the Wall. But Off the Wall is his most passionate, consistent and effortless work. Mike came alive when he got the opportunity to do it for dolo. The whole album is a Pop and R & B standard. My favorites are Rock with you(The Shiznit), Off the Wall(The Shiznit), Cant Help It(Classic), Burn this disco out, Get on the Floor, Dont stop till you get enough(Untouchable), Working day and night, It's the falling in love, and Girlfriend. Musically and artistically no one comes close to Mike. Even Biggie said it, "Some nights I perform like Mike - anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson, Action". Hopefully, Mike and Quincy Jones will wise up and give the world one more classic.

Michael Jackson may well be one of the most popular artists to have ever graced the pop charts, but even buyers need know that his album releases have a tendency to be inconsistent. Arguably his greatest creative period, was between 1979-1982. The beginning of this period, was when he dropped this album "Off the Wall", that many argue was his finest album (although "Thriller", was the greater commerical success). This album with the legendary production of "Quincy Jones", was to seamlessly mix Pop, Funk, Soul into a firecely chorrent album, that set a new creative high for Pop/Urban albums.
Opening with a pair of Urban-pop tunes ("Don't Stop 'Till you get Enough" & "Rock With You") that were as heavily steeped in sophisticated R&B-pop showcase with a definite disco slant, as they are sublimely crafted pop tunes, the remarkably thrilling vocal performances from Michael chime beautifully with the brilliant songwriting, and intoxicating blend of strong melodies.
These were cleverly followed by two resolutely Dancefloor orientated numbers in the shape of "Working Day and Night" and "Get on the Floor", that proved to be as vibrant & as colourful tapestry of alluring funk, and thrilling vocalism, by the real secret to there success was the driving and enormously catchy strings, guitar and Disco Beats (courtesy of "Quincy Jones"), that proved to be the most easily identifiable trademark here....so much so, that both songs are usually recognisable after the first 5-6 seconds of play.
"Off the Wall" is a dazzling array of Funk guitars, subtle strings and horns, and still to this day remains a rousing and deeply dramatic piece of dance-styled mainstream pop, that definitely ranks among the best uptempo songs ever written. Again the double contribution of both Michael's gripping vocal performance and the virtually flawless production behind this track, marked this track out the become, not only a lead single, but quite possibly the most popular song of the album.
The production team on this album takes something of a backseat here, as Michael gets to truly express his vocal range, with the stunning ballad that is "She's Out of My Life", and so proving, not only be a pop singer of some remarkable distinction, but also able to push his vocal range up several levels and deliver effortlessly skilled ballads. And also of having the double effect of giving the album enormous diversity.
And along with the remaining tracks, that are all equally worthy of praise, you have not only one of the greatest Pop/rock albums ever made, but arguably one of the greatest albums ever made...period. There is no Filler on this album, and few could argue against Michael's singing/Vocal performances, which were virtually flawless, and not enough praise is given to Quincy Jones for embuing this album, with such a beautifully orchestrated production, that without either (Michael's singing or Quincy's production), the album just couldn't possibly hope to be the success that it was. As to whether this album or "Thriller" is Michael's best album, will continue to be debated, but both of what quite possibly are the finest collection of pop/rock albums ever made, should unquestionably be a part of anyone's collection.

...awful cover on this special edition.
Buyers realize that record companies do want to make visible distinctions between original releases and re-mastered editions, but to make as drastic a change as this one borders on sacrilege.
The original back cover is a shot of Jackson sporting a modest Afro, a killer smile, and the nose that he was born with. This special edition has a photo that comes closer to being the Michael from the "Thriller" days, a few years from "Off the Wall."
The Epic record executive that authorized this "travesty" should be severely reprimanded.
That said, "Off the Wall" is a more consistent album than its successor, the mega-selling "Thriller." Besides the chart-toppers ("Rock with You," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," and "She's Out of My Life), the "B-sides" are A1!
"Workin' Day and Night," "Get on the Floor," the title cut, and the Stevie Wonder-influenced "I Can't Help It" are as vibrant today as they were over a quarter century ago.
The bonus features on this edition can be, for the most part, avoided.
Anyway, it is the music that counts and it's here in spades.

Michael Jackson's 1979 solo debut Off The Wall stands today as Michael Jackson at his rawest and most sincere.
Long before the scandals, the nose jobs, and the court appearances, Michael Jackson was the youngest member of the beloved Jackson 5, later known as the Jacksons. In the late 70's, Michael was no longer a little boy, he was a young man who, in a few years, became the biggest selling solo artist and the most exciting live act since The Beatles. He teamed up with producer Quincy Jones, and the result was a collaboration that spawned 3 classic albums within 8 years: Off The Wall, the record breaking Thriller, and Bad.
Off The Wall captures Jackson right before the madness kicked in, and it is quite a moment to cherish. The 10-track album features some of Michael's greatest classics: the US number 1 hits Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, and the groovy Rock With You, the sweet ballad She's Out Of My Life (a song so sincere that MJ actually cries at the end), the upbeat Working Day And Night, the Paul McCartney penned Girlfriend, and, one of my personal favorites, the charming title track Off The Wall.
Many people regard Thriller, the 1982 follow up, as Michael's greatest achievement. Thriller was so successful that it overshadowed the Grammy winning debut. Whatever the case may be, Off The Wall is definitely Michael's prized contribution to music, an album so sweet and so modest, Michael ought to take lessons from it for his future release.

Michael's Best (and happiest) Solo Work - Review written on October 11, 2006

Off The Wall is is the epitome of "being in the right place at the right time". This album was released just as Disco was morphing into the "Dance Pop" of the 80's, and Michael with the producer Quincy Jones delivered songs with just the right balance.
Michael was also leaving his "teenybop" image behind, and people were not only willing to see him as an adult, they embraced it. Don't Stop "Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Working Day and Night, Off The Wall and Burn This Disco Out were all up to the minute, Dance/Pop confections with just enough R & B mixed in.
Quincy can sometimes overproduce, but not here, the tracks have a clean feel, and Michael's diverse vocals are allowed to shine. Some of these stylings were heard on the Jackson's album, Destiny, but here Michael is able to take it to the next level.
Michael also updated his ability to deliver a ballad, and the standout here is She's Out of My Life. he delivers this song with just the right amount of emotion, and injects enough restraint to avoid going over into
lounge singer territory.
It is also worth noting that Michael seemed to be at a very happy and content point in his life (that sadly would not last). Michael's later work would slowly turn toward a darker side, Off The Wall would be the most upbeat of his solo work.

This is the album that put Michael Jackson, the solo artist on the map. Showing a more mature Jackson who finally enjoyed the creative control he deserved and who knew what he wanted, Off The Wall took the world by storm with its flawless combination of groovy disco masterpieces (Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Workin' Day And Night, Get On The Floor, Off The Wall), slick R&B tracks (Rock With You, I Can't Help It, It's The Falling In Love) and one heart-breaking ballad (She's Out Of My Life).
The great thing about listening to Off The Wall (and especially this remastered edition) now, 27 years after its release, is that the majority of the album's tracks still sound fresh! Michael, together with Quincy Jones, did something really special in creating a collection of songs that were not only innovative for their time but could also stand the test of time. This album is a true classic and deserves a place in anyone's music collection.
A note on the extra material on this disc:
Of the three special edition MJ albums that contain extra material (Thriller and Bad being the other two), this one is imo the most interesting. It contains the original demoâs of Donât Stop âTil You Get Enough and Workinâ Day And Night, both of which were recorded by Michael at home (with the help of his younger siblings Janet and Randy), using glasses, cowbells and God knows what else to create the unique sound of those tracks. The random banther and unique combination of instruments make the demo's not only interesting but also just plain fun to listen to.

Michael SANG (not sing...SANG!) on 'Off The Wall' (1979), which released 4 number one singles!! The remastered edition includes better sound quality & a few bonus tracks. The Classic songs on 'Off The Wall' include 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough', 'Rock With You', 'Working Day & Night', 'Off The Wall', 'She's Out Of My Life', and 'I Can't Help It' (Stevie Wonder hooked Michael up with this one!).
In addition to the magic pen of Rod Temperton, the rhythm sections from BOTH Rufus and The Brothers Johnson probably made it easier for Quincy Jones to produce this classic for Michael. 'Off The Wall' still sounds great TODAY, and it's foundations can be heard on 'Destiny'(1978) by The Jacksons, and 'You Can't Win' (fr.'The Wiz' SDTK 1978). 'Off The Wall' changed the way music was made (to an extent), and many fans still prefer it over 'Thriller'.
Following the massive success of 'Off The Wall', Michael sang on 'This Had To Be', which is from the 'Light Up The Night' CD (1980) by the Brother's Johnson, but after recording with his Brothers again (the hit album 'Triumph' 1980), nobody expected or knew that Jackson would eventually make history later in 1982. Also, isn't it amazing how the new remastered editions of 'Off The Wall' don't include the ORIGINAL cover art, which shows a 'pre surgical' Michael Jackson ?? Hmmmm.....At any rate, 'Off The Wall' is VERY ESSENTIAL & TIMELESS! Your music library is incomplete without this CD!

Wow, I can remember where I was the first time I heard
this album because it was that pivotal, not only in
his history, but in the collective pop
lexicon as well! In the late summer of 1979,
"Off The Wall", MJ's first adult solo effort hit
the world like a tsunami!
Every track on here is and was bangin'
and we were dancing our butts off to
"Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough", "Rock With You",
"Working Day & Night", "Get On The Floor",
the title track and "Burn This Disco Out" like
there was no tomorrow in sight!
We also were grooving on smooth
tracks like "Girlfreind", "I Can't Help It",
"It's The Falling In Love" and crying our eyes out
to "She's Out Of My Life"...
TRANSLATION: MJ had the world at his feet during this time!
I love this album even more than its follow-up
"Thriller", which was incredible in it's own right,
but "Off The Wall" was MJ before
all the weirdness, plastic surgery, scandals, etc.
and he was ours!
Without a doubt, his best album - Review written on September 30, 2004

People talk all the time about how great an album "Thriller" was. Yet, they seem to either neglect or forget that album was marketed to death. This is, without a doubt, Michael Jackson's best album. One of the few albums you could listen to from beginning to end, it was his first solo album, and of course, a timeless classic.
1. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" - 10/10. One of the most widely known Michael Jackson hits. Quincy Jones did a great job in producing this beauty, one which still gets plenty of play today.
2. "Rock With You" - 10/10. Another classic. Disco with a touch of love mixed in.
3. "Workin Day And Night" - 7/10. Very fast, upbeat track. One that's sure to get your feet going.
4. "Get On The Floor" - 8/10. Pure disco feel that almost has that "Saturday Night Fever" feel to it.
5. "Off The Wall" - 6/10. Another decent track. One that would seem somewhat out of style if it wasn;t so good.
6. "Girlfriend" - 10/10. Awesome track. One of the better songs he's made.
7. "She's Out Of My Life" - 10/10. A gem. Michael sings about a girl that he lost due to his being cavalier. You can hear his pain in the lyrics.
8. "I Can't Help It" - 10/10. My favorite Michael Jackson song of all time. One listen and you will notice how smooth it is. When I first heard this, it put me in a trance. A definite must-hear.

Off the Wall Album Review
From song like ABC to Heal the World, nobody can deny that Michael Jackson is not one of the most often played artists. No matter what age, creed, color, nationality, race, religion. You have at least heard one of Michael songs, like the Man In the Mirror, Thriller, and my all-time favorite Beat It. Michael has been popular since the Jackson 5, practically being a house hold name. Seeing him in many appearances especially with Michael Jordan in the song Jam. Michael is the icon of being a superstar. You can go to one of his concert in another country. They know ever song that he has sung and every word. They absolutely love and adore him; they do not care about the accusations placed before him. Let's be realistic Michael made great music and will be rich for years to come, making money on the rights to all his songs that are still being played today. Even though he is in the media with the whole child molestation, no one can deny that Michael will undoubtedly reign as the "King of Pop."
Off the Wall album is Michael's first album as being solo. He introduced this album in 1979. It was a classic, and the genius that helped him produce the album was none other than Quincy Jones. This classic record has some all-time songs like, Rock Wit You, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Working Day and Night, and especially Off the Wall. This CD is by far the top three of Michael's albums. This CD compared to the others is non-comparable by far. This album released him into to the world as a solo artist and not only was that it a hit, every song was good. It appealed to many people. Michael Jackson was the "It" man. I know that a lot of the new generation barely knows any of the songs that are on the album. That's because when we were born Thriller, Beat It, and Bad were atop the charts. Though hands down this one of the better or even the best overall Michael Jackson album.
Michael has so many albums with just him by himself, or back with Motown and his brothers. It was hard to choose one because I have been a Michael Jackson fan since I can remember. I can tell you that I used to watch the Jackson 5 cartoon when I was a little kid. I remember when I first heard the song Beat It. It was like magic my mother could not get me to stop singing it. My dad had this little red wind breaker jacket, and when the song came on I had that jacket on my back doing the dances. I would sit at home and watch the thriller tape so I could do all the moves with Michael on T.V. I even had the game Moon Man on Nintendo which I begged my dad to let me get it. I will and always will be a fanatic of the older, more younger Michael Jackson
Michael at his most fun - Review written on August 22, 2004

"Off the Wall" came out in 1979, a time period where Jackson was very busy with not only his brother band "The Jacksons", but also was trying to break into the movie business. However, the timing and his age (21) at the time made for a great time to launch his solo career. In 1979 so many manufactured sounding disco bands were polluting the airwaves that something fresh was needed. Enter in Quincy Jones and a young, excited, and energetic Michael, at the age where he entered adulthood, and "Off the Wall" was truly an off the chain excellent release.
While "Thriller" might have won more awards and received more airplay, and while later albums might be more complex and diverse in sound, "Off the Wall" was Michael at his most fun. Jones made sure that the sound was polished and new, but not to the extreme point. Jackson went on to capture the dance-floor audience with club ready hits such as the blazing "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" (a number one hit), "Working Day and Night", "Get on the Floor", the title track, and "Burn this Disco Out." Jackson also showed he was a jack of all trades, and while he could conceive perfect dance music for the party and club scene, that he could also conceive smooth R & B and soul. "Rock with You" is a mid-tempo song with lots of soul and a smooth sound. It went on to hit number one as well. "I Can't Help It", a song written by Stevie Wonder, is another song full of soul. "Girlfriend" shows hints of the pop Michael that would blow up to superstardom (figuratively and literally) after "Thriller". "She is Out of my Life" is one of Michaels top ballads. The pain and hurt of the lyric make for a very sad song, a far cry from the ballads that he puts out today where you don't know whether to laugh or cry.
The album, for the most part, has a very happy feel to it. It's fun to listen to, dance to, and sing along with. Look at the cover, and you see a young, handsome Michael, ready to take on the music world. It's too bad that same 21 year old today is a troubled 45 year old.
"Off the Wall" would lay the foundation for the superior "Thriller" to make it's mark. Though his later work would reek of paranoia and weirdness, this and "Thriller" show of the young, fun Michael Jackson, who would make his mark first as a musicial legend, and later as a side show clown.

This is a great album. You'll love every song on this album! It is truly one of the best albums ever! Michael sounds as good as he ever has. His singing and dancing is fabulous! His songwriting ablities are amazing. He wrote Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Workin Day and Night, and Get on the Floor. These songs are all classics! Now, Michael first off, did an amazing job with this album. But, don't forget that Rod Temperton wrote Rock with You, Off the Wall, and Burn this Disco Out. Which are also great MJ songs. Temperton also wrote Baby Be Mine, Thriller, and Lady in My Life for the album Thriller. So, Off the Wall and Thriller, MJ wrote Seven of the 19 songs (Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Girl is Mine, Get on the Floor, Don't Stop till You Get Enough, and Workin Day and Night which are all genious songs) Temperton wrote: Thriller, Baby Be Mine, Rock with You, Lady in my Life, Off the Wall, and Burn this Disco Out. I'm not trying to take away from MJ's genius work, which truly is genius, but to say that you should give Rod Temperton some love. So, if you reall love Off the Wall, then I suggest that you also check into the band Heatwave which Rod Temperton played for and wrote nearly all of the songs for. So, if you dig MJ you'll also dig Heatwave just like I did.

Off the Wall is a great album for fans of r&b/disco and jazz music, it definitely is an amazing start for michael, but he really blossomed with Thriller, Bad and Dangerous when he started having more creative control over his music. My favourite songs on here are the classics Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You, which I still hear a lot on the radio or in clubs, and I also love the jazzy I Can't Help It, the track Get On the Floor, the funky disco number Burn This Disco Out and the others. A true r&b classic that set stone for modern r&b music. Everyone such as justin timberlake, usher, britney spears, musiq soulchild, janet jackson, neptunes, beyonce, jill scott, mary j blige, brandy, glenn lewis have turned to Off the Wall for musical inspiration and it shows. Buy it today to hear the man behind the music from this album that would become a classic 25 years later. And the best part is that he is extremely talented and original and I'm sure all the artists I named would agree.
