Perhaps Under-rated, and very dark - Review written on January 17, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
When "Morning View" was released in 2001, it seemed to get some flack for the fact that it was "to mellow" and the band had "sold out" due to the popularity of "Drive" off of "Make Yourself". NOW, it is true that the album has a bit more of a laid back sound, when you compare it to "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" but dont let the more laid back tone fool you, Its very dark, and my opinion is the dark sound, with the obvious "down tuning" of guitars gives it a very heavy feel. "Morning View" has a great feel to it, and it might be the most under-rated album in their catalog. If you have been hesitent to pick this up because of poor word of mouth, I really insist that you give it a listen, with an open mind, and you might find it dark and desparing, as I did.
My favorite album from my favorite band - Review written on August 07, 2007

I've been a fan of Incubus for about seven years, have seen them live four (soon to be five) times, and have listened to their albums countless times. Morning View remains my all-time favorite Incubus album, despite some "old-school" fans' opinion that this album, and the two that have followed, represent Incubus' "sell-out" to "mainstream" or "radio" rock (I must say, also, that the rock radio station in Miami still only plays "Drive" and no other Incubus songs). Let's not forget that several of Incubus' hits came from the album Make Yourself: "Pardon Me," "Stellar," "Drive." Certainly Morning View represents a departure from the days of S.C.I.E.N.C.E., but Incubus has always said they want each album to represent an evolution in their sound, and I feel that true fans can appreciate all phases of Incubus' career.
Another criticism of Morning View is that it's too mellow, too "chill." This quality, though, is really appealing to me. Although some of the songs are more "chill" than those on Make Yourself (which, I might add, contains the extremely mellow "I Miss You") or S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Morning View contains more of those sweeping, almost epic, moody, dramatic compositions that are my favorite Incubus songs. Tracks like "Here in My Room" and "Monuments and Melodies," both of which were produced after Morning View's release, retain some of that drama, but Morning View the album on which Incubus is at its moody best. That's why I love it!
"Nice to Know You" - This is a great rock song, but because it's Incubus, it has a little extra. "NTKY" is also amazing to hear live.
"Circles" - Another great rocker, and like most Incubus tunes, it has more thoughtful (although Brandon Boyd is as enigmatic as he is thoughtful) lyrics than the majority of rock music out there today.
"Wish You Were Here" - The music in this song is all drama, and you can't help but sing along. Gotta love, "I'm counting UFOs/I signal them with my lighter/And in this moment I am happy."
"Just a Phase" - Extremely moody, beautiful music, and Brandon Boyd can really get emotion across with his voice. This song has great build-up and then just explodes at the end.
"11 am" - My favorite song on the album. Again, you can feel the pain and frustation not only in the lyrics but in the voice.
"Blood on the Ground" - This song rocks, and I love the lyrics.
"Mexico" - I have to admit, this isn't the most exciting song because it's just an acoustic guitar and Brandon singing, but it's really emotional and, again, super moody.
"Warning" - This song has moments of that quasi-epic quality I like about Incubus, but it's also just a quality rock song with mainstream appeal.
"Echo" - This is a beautiful song that makes me feel really happy to be in love.
"Have You Ever" - Another rocker, but not my favorite on the album.
"Are You In" - A contagious party anthem. It's kind of out of place on the album, but it's fun.
"Under My Umbrella" - This song has some really interesting music and is one of the hardest songs on the album. One of my faves and an interesting balance to some of the softer, more mellow sounds that characterize Morning View.
"Aqueous Transmission" - This song is the epitome of chill. Even when I think I don't like this song that much, I listen to it and love it. Incubus experiments here with some different interests and comes up with a cool sound.
My third favorite Incubus album - Review written on July 17, 2007

I consider Make Yourself and SCIENCE to be superior to this album, but this album contains three of my 10 favorite songs by them: "Nice to Know You", "Wish You Were Here" and "Warning". So this album is no slouch. I actually enjoy this one straight through, just as with the previous albums I mentioned. "Just A Phase" is a really cool song, too, but some of the stuff on here is more experimental, so not everyone is going to get into it as much as a die-hard fan would. It is kind of hit or miss with me. To me, Incubus has kind of faltered on the two albums that follow this, so I recommend their earlier stuff up until this one, and if you enjoy the more experimental side of them, then pick up their new ones too.
Almost perfection..but bogged down by a dying style... - Review written on October 02, 2006
Rating: 4 out of 5
Judging by their latest release "A Murder of Crows", Incubus have ditched their funk/Nu-Metal/Progressive/Poppish style for a more straight forward rock sound. And for good reason. The moniker genre they were usually placed under has long since died out, and the remaining bands that attempt to release material even remotely close to Nu-Metal usually replicate the Nu-metal bands that came before them. Lets face it, Nu-Metal is dead, and it never really was that great to begin with. Incubus was one of the few great bands that incorporated Hip Hop/Funk/Metal/Jazz and a DJ all in one package.
"Morning View" sees the band in their most popular and at the height of their career. Now in the lime light, with millions of fans, "Morningview" does show the band ditching much of their Hip-Hop/Funky roots for more mature production and compostition. The vocals have become the lead instrument with the band taking much of a back seat. That is not to say that "Morninview" is a less-than-stellar album, on the contrary, it is an album worth owning with much to offer. The musicianship is still amazing and the vocals and lyrics are just as deep and meaningful.
"Morninview" takes time to break into, and even more time to find the hidden gems beyond just being a "great" radio friendly album. Just like "Make Yourself" I took this album at face value and have missed much of the magic to be found in each song. Under a new light one can easily see that "Morninview" is one of the greatest releases of its time.
Bottom Line: Great Music - Review written on August 31, 2006
Rating: 5 out of 5
Incubus just knows how to make good music. Even though Morning View is not another SCIENCE, its a great album. And I don't know how you can call this album soft. Sure its not has hard or fast as old incubus, but its not soft. Morning View is a more upbeat uplifting album, but it does have some heavy and hard rifts in it. The lyrics sound great as well, and it has some addictive hooks in it.
I hate when people get stuck on a certain style a band might have had at one point. All bands go though different phases in their music, and Incubus is no different. I'll be the first too admitt that the old incubus albums rocked, I loved the funk style that made SCIENCE so great. But I also appreciate the new incubus, Make Yourself and now Morning View are both great albums.
This is a more mature sounding Incubus, and it is something different from Brandon and the guys. I personally am glad Morning View is not a retread of SCIENCE or Make Yourself. Fortunatly for us, Incubus is not a band that continues to pump out the same album over and over again. They do what they should, and thats make a different soundng album every time, and they are great at it. I'd rank this as one of my top 3 Incubus albums, the other two being SCIENCE and Make Yourself.
Anyways, I find this to be a really well made album. Many of the songs could be singles, and it's very diverse album that can appeal to alot of different people. I bought this album when it came out in 2001, and I'm still listening to it today, in 2006. I think that speaks for itself as to how good it is. Bottom line is that morning view is a great album and has alot to offer.
Critically, Id consider this their best release to date. - Review written on August 25, 2006

I discovered incubus one night in 1999 or so, just before Make Yourself was released. I heard "Pardon Me" on the radio and i was hooked. Two years later, Morning View is released. By then, i was already familiar with their songs and was eager to see how they had evolved/built upon their earlier work. Lemme tell ya, this record did not dissapoint. Incubus has a knack for evolving with each cd they release. I say "evolve" rather than "change," because it is extremely graceful rather than forced.
As a critic, this cd has pretty much everything i could hope for: experimental time signatures, violins, interesting guitar effects, soulful lyrics, even crickets chirping at the end of the cd! It is really nothing you would expect from a "nu metal/funk" band. This cd is rich and complex and very thoughtful.
As a listener, its a little harder to get into. With Make Yourself, all it took was one spin and i was forever hooked. This CD (along with most other great cds) takes a little longer to sink your teeth into.
Overall, id reccomend this cd to anyone who can appreciate a band that isnt content with creating the same sound over and over again, a band that wants to create something that THEY are proud of, a band that is a step above the other bands that it is unfairly labeled with.
Incubus' most Unique Album - Review written on April 12, 2006

"Morning View" in my opinion is the most different album by Incubus. Their traditional sound lies within rock, hard rock, etc. But this album is the one with the most chilled-out songs on it. That is one of the reasons for this being my favorite Incubus album: its originality.
Mind you...if you like this album, don't attain the mindset of "omg if I like this one I'll like their other albums too!" It doesn't work that way; Incubus' other releases are nothing like this, with the exception of a few songs. And now...let's move on to the song review.
Nice to Know You--A nice opening song. I like the lyrics a lot, and the constant transission between heavy rock and slow beats gives the song a good rhythm. 8.5/10
Circles--Probably the one song on "Morning View" that is most like Incubus' other albums. The guitar in the background is especially cool. The chorus is also nice, and the lyrics really stay true to the song title. 8/10
Wish You Were Here--My favorite song on this CD by far. The guitar riffs in this song are the greatest on the whole album. The chorus is also very amazing, and so are the lyrics. Quite possibly a perfect song. 10/10
Just a Phase--Probably the song with the mose meaningful lyrics on the album. It starts off as an easy-going song with no lyrics and a catchy, steady beat and then is joined by powerful lyrics that have to do with going through a typical phase and how annoying it is to go through something like that. 9/10
11 A.M.--A song with a mixture of Incubus' rock and the slow beats on this CD. This track acts as a bridge between the other albums and this album, in my opinion. 8.5/10
Blood on the Ground--Like Circles, this track is like Incubus' songs from other albums. Not only that, but this song's lyrics are meaningful as well. It portrays getting in fights, but not saying anything to the other person (hence "Blood in my mouth beats blood on the ground"). 8/10
Mexico--The slowest song on here by far. This is such a big step for incubus, because as far as I can tell, they have never done anything like this before. This is why they are such an excellent band: they take risks by exploring other genres, and they do a good job at it too. 8.5/10
Warning--My second favorite track on the whole album. I dunno why, but it is excellent. The vocals and lyrics are the best here. Especially the nice-sounding bit in which the vocals go "We'll make millions writing a book on the way it should have been." Parts of this song like this one portray a great range in the vocals, which is why this is such a great song. 9.5/10
Echo--My favorite slow song. The vocals sound very nice, especially the chorus. The chorus alone is a reason to listen to this track over and over again. 9/10
Have you Ever--Not one of my personal favorites, but still a good track. It resembles a lot of other Incubus songs on the other albums as well. This song is basically about putting yourself in someone else's position before you judge them. 8/10
Are You In?--The most pop-like song on the album. I was surprised and happy to hear this song. Again: Incubus is awesome at experimenting with new songs, and I must say, this one came out nicely. 9/10
Under my Umbrella--Also a lot like their other songs on albums such as "Make Yourself." But the beginning vocals ("When I close my eyes...") sound awesome, and so does the main singing. Overall, a good track. 8.5/10
Aqueous Transmission--The most UNIQUE song ever done by Incubus EVER. It includes instruments they've never used before, such as a Japanese flute. It has a "Crouching-Tiger, Hidden-Dragon" feel to it, and it is enjoyable even for the sole reason that it is different from the rest of the songs. The vocals are also great. 9/10
OVERALL score: 5 stars. This is definitely the most unique, most laid-back album by Incubus. It shows a lot of very successful experimentation as well. I dunno what all this "selling out" talk is, but you should definitely buy this album. It is much different from the other albums, and still manages to be one of Incubus' best albums.
Definately the Best CD and band of our time - Review written on March 21, 2006

Ok, Ive had this CD for over 2 years. And I still listen to it. This CD makes some of the best melodies and sounds ever known to man. Don't listen to the reviewers that say they sold out or its too mellow. Its not to mellow, its just too good for you and your ears. Definately buy this CD. Standout tracks are Nice To Know You, Wish You Were Here, Just a Phase, 11am, Blood on the Ground, Mexico, Warning, Echo, Have You Ever, Are You In, Under My Umbrella, Aqueous Transmission. Yeah, I know I mentioned all of the tracks on this CD except for Circles, because I think it gets too old and repetive after 50+ listenings. Your a fool if youve never heard this whole CD.

Coming from a different world, I got interested in Incubus after seeing the movie
"Stealth" ... which was an unbelievably dumb movie except that the soundtrack (by
BT) and songs (3 originals by Incubus) were great. I came online to Amazon to buy
Incubus' backlist and get to know them, but argh, they are under the Sony label.
Literally "under". I just figured out that the movie "Stealth" is also a Sony product
... with all those pushes, like the pilot saying, "at least it's good music, man" ...
oh dear ... I've been duped by Sony self-promotion. Did I really like the music or
was I just being suggestable? Does everyone understand that this is going on
except for me? Well, after Sony's rootkit attack on their customers, Sony CDs (and
now DVDs) are not welcome in my players nor my house: I just don't trust them.
Incubus, if you read this and if you are a real band: (1) get another label, (2) good
work on the music for Stealth, and (3) get another label; until then, goodbye. If you
are not a real band (i.e., Sony's lapdog), then shame on you, posers; goodbye.

All right. All of you who haven't heard Incubus or think they aren't any good you need to stop what your listening to now and pick up this CD. Whether your listeing to Rage Against The Machine, 311, Red hot Chili Peppers, or any other band, pick up this CD now. You will not regret. This is one of Incubus's best albums, and possibly the greatist band and CD since Pink Floyd.
Here are my ratings of the songs
1= lowest
10= highest
Nice to know You - 10. This is one of Incubus's best songs. What a great way to open this album. This song is so sick with the intro and the chorus and versus. Great song
Circles - 8. This sounds like a good song at the beginning, but it quickly wears off. It has a great guitar riff but tends to repeat itself often.
Wish You Were Here - 10. This is another great song on this CD. It was a hit and I agree. This is a nice tune to play.
Just a Phase - 10. This is such a beautiful song. The middle when it builds up and finally goes into a heavy, emotional part is just killer. You need to listen to this song now, because if you havent, youve been mising out
11A.M. - 9. This is a chill, laid back song. Its generally a good song, but sometimes you just skip through it while listeing to this in the car or something. This too has a great guitar riff that defines where they recorded this album in California.
Blood on the Ground - 9. This is one of the more heavier songs. It is really underrated. It has a heavyish guitar riff in the beginning and goes into a massive amount of heaviness. Good song to listen to when your mad.
Mexico - 10. This song right here is the most underrated song on the album. If I could I would rate this a 100. This song is one of the most emotional songs Ive ever listened to. When I first heard it I thought it was stupid, but then I gave to a closer listen. When you listen to this song more, you'll like it more. Argueably one of the best songs on the album.
Warning - 10. This song is very good. The intro when Brandon Boyd and Mike open up is so insane. If you listen to this more youll also like it more. All around good song.
Echo - 10. Echo is very unique. It is a laid back song, with jsut enough strength in it. I can't explain this song. Its really good.
Have You Ever - 8. This is another heavier song on this album. It has a insane bridge, but not much else. Also very good lyrics.
Under My Umbrella - 9. A very heavy song. If you do not like this song at first, you will like it when you listen to it more. Probably the heaviest on the album.
Aqueous Transmission - 7. This is the worst song. It has a Eastern flavor to it, and is very laid back. This is just the guitarist, Mike, and the singer, Brandon Boyd. A good song to fall asleep to.
All in all, this is an unforgettable album. Seriously, but this now or yuoll regret you havent.
Very mellow...very good. - Review written on October 09, 2005

Alot of people dislike this cd. But I can understand why (in a sense.) S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Make Yourself were very good, very rock, very funk, just a good blend. This quite simply, is different. It's a mellower side of Incubus, and honestly a very good side. They got it right with this one...although i'll be the first to hate poppy things, and hits left and right, this is an exception. Here we go...
1.Nice To Know You 8.5/10...Used to be my favorite incubus song before i really got into them. Overplayed with simply boring verses at times...but the chorus and riff are extremely good.
2.Circles 8.5/10...Very cool song. This is a Make Yourself-esque song, very well done..basically an average incubus song though.
3.Wish You Were Here 8/10...An incubus classic i have to admit..with amazing lyrics, but this song never grabbed my attention too much. Still good.
4.Just A Phase 9/10...Very cool...a very long beginning with brandon humming so to speak, with an acoustic guitar..and this is the ultimate build-up song, when in the end turns into a hard rocker.
5.11am 10/10...One of my favorite incubus songs. It's just very emotional and i absolutely love the lyrics and the humming in the background.
6.Blood On The Ground 9/10...Alot of people don't like this song and i don't know why. I love it. The lyrics are cool while the song rocks, it changes tempos a good amount of times also..very good.
7.Mexico 8.5/10...All acoustic. Good song...get's tiresome, but includes some nice violins.
8.Warning 8.5/10...Another hit..but this includes amazing vocals, definitely a classic.
9.Echo 7.5/10...Eh..I like the jazzy part but...it's not my favorite, good song though.
10.Have You Ever 9/10...Another song alot of people don't like. Again i don't know why. The verses do get annoying fast, but the chorus makes up for it, making this a good short rocker.
11.Are You In? 8/10...Another jazz piece..but this one's a tad better than Echo, don't get me wrong they're both good..but not my favorite.
12.Under My Umbrella 10/10...Up there with my top 3 favorite incubus songs (Vitamin, Clean) from start to finish this song is amazing...just listen.
13.Aqueous Transmission 8.5/10...Incubus' most experimental song to date. SOOO relaxed and really a nice touch, and can't really ask for a better way to end a great cd.
So basically this is just as good as any of Incubus' other stuff. I do recommend.
A nice "View", although one that leaves something to be desired - Review written on August 20, 2005

I'm sorry to say the last part but that is what I honestly feel. Maybe the audience of this album isn't necessarily for someone like me. I like songs that can be "more quiet" as well (look at my review for "Adore" by the Smashing Pumpkins). It just seems to me like what is done here is just kind of, well, average. That's not to say that there aren't moments I like listening to on "Morning View", there are. I mean, I think it's pretty good, but it doesn't leave much playback value or aftertaste.
Songs that I particularly enjoy the whole way through include the excellent single "Warning" which should pretty much be heard by EVERYONE. I like the progression of the chords on the outro in particular. The message is good and turns out to be unpretentious. I enjoy other tracks, but not nearly to that extent. It seems that the really good tracks don't come until late in the album. For instance, it ends well with "Aqueous Transmission" which is unique for bands that they are compared to. I like the somewhat stream-of-consciousness lyrics as well. There are a lot of times here though that I respect the ideas a lot more than I actually enjoy the record.
This reminds me of listening to "Good News..." by Modest Mouse in that both records, while praised among new fans, don't really do a whole lot for me. I don't think that this is bad at all, but it seems like a lot of other bands do similar ideas and pull it off in a more convincing way. And yes, to me, 3 stars is actually a favorable opinion.

So this is Nu-Metal huh? I ignored this band and the others that fall into that genre. I gotta get out more often. I figured they were just another bunch of talentless punks who knew little or nothing about making real music; real art.
I heard Meglomaniac on my daughter's radio station when I got my car back (for a day) and thought that was awfully good and then forgot about 'em. Someone loaned me this CD and one night, when very bored (I work in Tempe AZ during the week but live in Tucson AZ), I gave this a spin. What a great record this outfit has put together here. Aqueous Transmission is downright beautiful with the flowing but dreamy progression and vocals accentuated with Japanese flutes and... is that a koto I hear in there? A creative surprise. This is truly excellent.
There are plenty of rowdy, heavy moments on this release but it is well thought out music that reminds me a lot of some of King Crimson's music though not as rhythmically complex as that outfit. Still,it's above the cut. There are also some more laid back, introspective moments. I'm playing this one a lot.
Is this a CD for you? I don't know, my tastes are very eclectic (see my other reviews) ranging from John Lee Hooker to Elliott Smith; The Shins to King Crimson; Miles Davis to Eric Dolphy; Neko Case to Stravinsky; Bob Dylan to Wilco. My standard is pretty much this, if it comes from the heart,it is worth at least a listen and, if it's very good, I pull out my hard-earned wad of cash. I pulled out my hard-earned wad of cash for this one.
A Rarity- Maturity in a Post-90's Rock Band - Review written on August 16, 2005

While unable to attain the great symbiosis of Anger, Drama and Musicianship of the Alt-Rock Kings, the Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus displays clearly on Morning View something the Pumpkins and most of their genre counterparts did not possess- a level of maturity. While the Pumpkins use outbursts of anger (Bullet With Butterfly Wings) to sharply contrast their drama (1979), Incubus takes a more resigned, ebb-and-flow approach to their music. Though the anger is still visisble (tracks like Nice to Know You, Blood on the Ground) and the drama is still there (Wish You Were Here, 11am, Mexico), the anger has been dull and the drama is mellow, giving the listener a feeling of control to replace part of the power void. But, controlled maturity will never be as musically satisfying as raw, unbridled adolescent agression
