I did not use Amazon to subscribe to MacLife, as far as I can remember there was an offer on Version Tracker in February 2007. Nevertheless, I have not seen a single issue of the publication. I contacted their customer service a couple of times and finally asked for a refund but did not receive it either.

Subscribe at your own peril.

Second one I've purchased. I should have remembered. Amazon is a great place to purchase many items. And, I love being a customer. But, Magazines are not a good fit. Be prepared to wait two months for your first issue.
And, also, be prepared to not get all the issues. I'm hoping that I'm the only one who has this problem. Cause Amazon is great, and so it MacLife.

MacAddict Not Worth It Anymore - Review written on March 02, 2006

I have Issue #1 and just received the lastest issue (March 06), but I've let my subscription run-out. MacAddict isn't worth it anymore.

First, I loved MacAddict for "the Disc." Back in the days of pre-broadband, the Disc was a godsend! Software galore! But now in the days of broadband, the Disc is not a good enough reason to get MacAddict. The only original conent on the Disc is the monthly staff movie, I think I watched one staff movie over the years.

Second, the magazine seems to have lost quite a bit of content over the years. The magazine started at over 100 pages and is now a slim 80 pager. Often there is one "feature" article and that's it. Lately I spend about 10 minutes scanning the magazine for anything worth reading and then file it with the others.

Third, the magazine has a pretty weird view of who "Mac Addicts" are. "Mac Addicts" are accomplished musicians (who use Apple's GarageBand) and accomplished cinematographers (who capture video with high-end digital cameras and use iMovie and iDVD on a near daily basis.) They're also people who have the latest and greatest hardware who upgrade at the drop of a hat. I don't do any of those things, and I wager that the majority of Mac users don't do most of those on a regular basis.

Forth, their review section is hit-or-miss. Sometimes, they review relavant products that a good majority of Mac users want to know about. Other times they review fringe products (MIDI accordion, anyone?) or products out of the price range of all but the independently wealthy. The rating system seems to suffer from grade inflation. Nearly every product earns a score of 4 out of 5. If they like something, it gets a 5, if they don't like something, it gets a 3.

On a positive note, Mac Addict is a "fun" magazine. And its news coverage is pretty good.

Not as deep as MacWorld but worth the subscription due to the alternative perspective on software and hardware. Very fun to read with a unique style of writing. The reviews can rarely be spotty with lack of depth as the culprit in some cases. The majority, though, are on target. The best part of the magazine are the unique 3rd party hardware finds. Overall a great addition and enjoyable read.

Let's face it ....... owning a Mac is like owning a Harley or an Airstream.

It's a cult!!!

Good fun. Harmless as can be and it just makes you feel good everytime you sit down at your Mac. Having a magazine come every month with a bunch of foolishness about this very slick machine increases the joy way more than the magazine price.

I read it from cover to cover and even believe some of it.

I used to sell and fix Macs since the original Mac 128,
I have owned 14 Macs over 21 years so I have seen it all.
Mac Addict is OK but only because our choices are so slim. Mac User was always the best and I couldn't bother renewing MacWorld after they got nasty with my late payment after I bought it for almost 20 years.

I quit buying MacAddict because of all the free disks. They were full of buggy freebies and Ii turned me off. To keep up with Macs, read the NY Times in the Circuits section and David Pogue's column, web site. Also. if you can afford the Wall St Journal, read Walt Mossberg for all Techy things. He gives a fair review and answers any questions he can, Mac Pc, Camera. The Wash Post on line has a good tech writer for Mac stuff. We reallt don't need a Magazine with the Web. Happy Mac-ing and order TIGER.
I JUST GOT MY NEW IPOD PHOTO 60 gig and a 1gig Shuttle which I use every day in the gym. Buy Applecare and Apple will cover the (probably) 2 batteries. I have an original IPOD (10Gig in 01) and the battery still works and I abused it on many plane trips. It still runs and is my bedroom pod hooked up to my Bose Cd/Radio. yeah I love toys.

If you read some of the older reviews some make the comment that Mac Addict isn't what it used to be. I'm not sure what they're getting at with that. This magazine has been steadily improving over the years. Lots of reviews, and the included CD is a great tool, filled with free ware, share ware, and samples of commercial software that allow you to try the program before buying it.
If your a Mac engineer it may not be enough for you, but for most of us this is a good source of info.

I have been subscribed for little over a year now (no discs on my magazines though - they must have phased this out). I look forward to the day my Mac Addict arrives as it is always full of great tips to make life easier. A must have for anyone who owns a Mac, this magazine contains useful tips, troubleshooting, guides to free downloads, and loads of tech support. I especially love the Q&A section, and find that this part is the most useful to my day to day computing needs. I have just renewed my subscription for another year!

Where Macworld is bad, Addict is dreadful. It is dumbed down to the level of Teen Beat, and the "reviews" don't deserve the name. The extent to which it drools over Apple is embarassing, leaving no pretence of independence. Like its competitor, it exploits the crummy support that typifies the computer industry, so we get articles about the "secrets" of such and such product. A "secret" in the computer industry is a feature or defect that has not been properly documented by the manufacturer. This should be blasted, not applauded. But Addict is happy to exploit readers by selling them the information they should have gotten when they purchased the product.

i got a subsription after not reading the mag for several years. its turned from fun and creative to mediocre and lifeless. It feels like this is being published out of someones basement. The articles are all a month behind Macworld and usually are based around the mags highest selling point, the demo cd. Then just for fun, theres articles on how to make your mouse blink or how to turn your mac on with the garage door opener.
The last 3 issues have been exactly the same, covering iLife and only get slightly more desriptive from the previous issue.
I used to love this magazine. Now its kinda just fallen into a steady groove.

me thinks anyway... i always saw macworld as Apple's public relations magazine... it's informative, but they seem to do whatever Apple wants in so far as the information that they present... not necessarily skewed reviews, but they're not trying to ... Steve Jobs off either... MacAddict is a little more fun of a format... it's also very informative.... i try to never bother with the CD/DVD rom of shareware.... i'll find it over the net if its that important to me.

What a mag! I haven't read any of the other reviews, but i must offer my unqualified 5 Stars for this playful, interesting magazine.

From command line tips, to product reviews, to the silly stuff on the back page, this rag is a must have for any mac enthusiast. None of the other Mac magazines capture the apple-user spirit quite like this.

But dont let me confuse you, MacAddict is in no way frivoulus - droll, yes, but serious and quite insightful too.

My only qualm with the magazine is that it is monthly and not weekly. I usually read it - cover to cover - within the first 24 hours of delivery! maybe if it were a bit more drab i could make it last longer.

Having been a charter subscriber since Issue One, paying full subscriber rates, I am now subscribing disc-less at cut rate. Can't put my finger on it, but MacAddict has lost something. Too juvenile, too silly, too much waste of my time... I'm not sure. But I'm not ready to cut the cord just yet. Sorry, Rick. In the meantime, I'm putting my hard earned cash on MacHome, a much improved magazine with great promise.

The ranks of Macintosh magazines have always been thin. After the demise of MacUser (the best magazine) and MacWeek (the best trade), MacAddict came out of nowhere to fill some of that void.

As an alternative to MacWorld, the venerable option for Mac users, MacAddict brings some life to the party. Offering the content of MacWorld, but written like Maxim, the enthusiasm for the platform definitely comes through.

MacAddict is not unique in content. You get product reviews, how-to's, tips, interviews, and such. (Depending on your subscription, it may also include a helpful CD loaded with freeware, shareware, video clips, and other goodies - it's the CD that gives the mag its raison d'etre.) All things considered, it's your typical computer magazine. What sets it apart is its insider, wink-wink, Gen X attitude.

And that's where the strength and weakness of the magazine lies. How much you'll enjoy MacAddict depends how much you like the attitude.

Personally, I find it a bit grating and in-your-face simply for in-your-face's sake. MacWorld may be a better choice in this regard. MacAddict tends to be a bit thin page-wise, too. It's about half the length of comparable computer magazines. Part of that lies in the fact that the Mac universe isn't as loaded with as much debris as the PC's, but still, MacWorld has more content. And that content does have some bigger names writing it, too.

One area in which MacAddict does beat MacWorld is that it seems to be on a tighter publishing schedule - getting reviews of new products ahead of its stodgier cousin. But when you consider what is available in this regard on the Internet, this advantage doesn't seem so helpful.

If you are a Mac fanatic - and can afford it - get MacAddict with MacWorld. But if you are a normal user, I'd tip the scales toward MacWorld.

If you are a Macintosh user you deserve to live. But if you buy this magazine without the disc you deserve to have a PC...oh no, how I could, I wrote those two letters together. Well, don't misunderstand me, this is THE MAGAZINE for mac users, but without the the disc it's just like this: Mom, may I watch the t.v.? -Oh yes, honey, you can watch it, just don't turn it on.

If you're looking for a macintosh magazine and can't afford subscribing to Macworld, MacDesign, and MacAddict, get MacAddict. Not only has it been redesigned from the ground up, but they got rid of their insipidly stupid mascot Max in the review section. No longer are we faced with the blech, freakin' awesome, etc... of this tiresome cartoon character.

But more than that are its features, reviews (that everyone can understand), games sections, get info, and more. It's irreverant, fun, sometimes a little too juvenile, but you get the impression that the people who run this magazine LOVE using macs. I never got that impression from the other mac magazines (except maybe MacDesign) or from any PC magazine on the market. With that said, it also comes with a monthly CD (which I believe is about $1 extra) just brimming with demos, freeware, shareware, movie clips, and more. It's a great magazine and you won't be disappointed. You'll look forward to each and every issue and read it from cover to cover (too bad it's not twice a month!).

The one star is for this deal, not for the magazine: To offer MacAddict without the CD is like offering the New Yorker without the cartoons--it's an integral component. One of the main reasons to buy the magazine is to get the demos, updates, freeware, shareware, and staff movies. No doubt that the magazine is fun, a little irreverent, and mostly on top of things...but the magazine also is written with the disc in mind. So, please, Amazon, offer a REAL MacAddict subscription.

My fist copy of MacAddict was issue 6 and I haven't missed one since. The subscription cost is worth it just for the Disc. Back in the days when 28.8 was a screaming fast modem, the Disc was a lifesaver packed with a weeks worth of downloads. That was also back when Apple let MacAddict put OS updates on the Disc but Steve put an end to that :( The How To sections vary from "Yeah Whatever" to "...Awesome" and some go where the vast majority of Mac owners should never venture (overclocking an iBook!!). Others, like some of the Photoshop tips, make the one year cost [worth it] compared to what you pay for a book. The content is thin sometimes and the reviews tend to cheerlead a bit but MacAddict is still head and shoulders over any other Mac magazine. If you own a Mac, you should subscribe for at least a year. After that, you should have a good collection of Disc's with the essentials (Stuffit, BBEdit, GraphicConverter, etc) and you can decide if you want more.

I get this as well as Mac Home and Mac World. I like Mac Addict the most. It has a wealth of information that is good for the common user. It has a good advertising section in the back of the magazine that is great to flip through. I really enjoy the CDs that come with the magazine - it comes with materials that are written about in the issue. Mac Addict also writes with a sense of humor - always a good thing!

If you are thinking about getting a Macintosh, have just bought a new Mac or if you just have an old Mac Classic in your attic, this Magazine is a must-have. I have every issue from the first one and I keep them all as references.

They have ads, but they are not full of ads like many of their competitors. Every single issue has a "get info" secion where commonly and not-so-commonly asked questions and/or problems are asked and answered.

Every issue has at least one tutorial on a major Mac product... from Photoshop to Quicken and everything in between. Many items are reviewed from kid's games, learning software, scanners, digital cameras, etc... in a language that mere mortals can understand.

Like any magazine, there are articles I could care less about, but every single issue has at least one article that makes having the magazine worth keeping indefinitely.

While they show off the features of the latest greatest Macs, they do not ignore the old beige Mac Classics and their siblings... how-to articles on upgrading different models are featured often and the accompanying CD will contain latest updates from Apple (so you don't have to download), shareware and freeware apps described in the Magazine and apps for OSX, Classic and older (pre OS 8) Macs are included.

I can't say enough how much I treasure my subscription to MacAddict.

It's no MacUser (RIP). The current version of this magazine is too technical/geeky for the average Mac user--far from the content when I last subscribed years ago (I made the mistake of subscribing without seeing a recent issue). The issues are now thin and heavy with advertising. The writing, though refreshingly evangelistic at times, seems to be geared toward young gamers and the like. -- a Mac user since 1990.

I have been a MacAddict subscriber since Issue #1 and have since discontinued all of the other Mac magazines I used to subscribe to. MacAddict is lighthearted but every month provides genuinely useful information in a manner which is neither too techy nor too condescending. Reviews of products are fair and impartial. MacAddict helps newbies and seasoned Mac users alike get the most from their Macs, and I recommend it without reservation to anyone looking for a gift for a Mac user. The monthly CD is especially nice for those who don't have a broadband internet connection and can't easily download the huge demos of new games.

I love my Mac. I have had a Mac since college, since the first "Wild Eeep" was available. But unless you are a real EggHead, I find that this and the "other" Mac Mag is just too much Mac Mush. Honestly, what I do is go to Amazon.com's electronics section (...) and peruse the information there about products. I don't have to fight my way through a bunch of cyber-jargon or EggHead lingo. And I don't have to fight for three months to get the renewal taken off my credit card.

Hey, I'm being honest up front -- full disclosure, and all that jazz...

I'm the Editor in Chief at MacAddict, and I gotta say that if you're a fan of the Mac, you'll definitely love our magazine. Our monthly goal is to help you get the most out of your Mac, so we cram each issue full of how-to stories, tips'n'tricks, product recommendations, and bright shiny objects -- all written and laid out with that now-famous MacAddict attitude.

If you love your Mac and want to enjoy yourself while learning how to squeeze the last possible drop of fun out of it -- and bend it to your will when using it for actual work, as well -- you'll love our magazine.

And if you don't, tell me why -- maybe you've got some great ideas about how we could improve it.
