X Box Remote - Review written on May 20, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
I was happy to see that they still sell these remotes because I've been using my X Box as a DVD player for years now and without the remote it's pretty much useless. Too bad it cost me almost 5 times what I paid for the item, in Shipping. My only recommendation is - when purchasing this remote might as well purchase 2 or 3 at 1 time and store them for future use. This way paying over $10 for shipping won't seem that bad.

Xbox remote control-- - Review written on December 25, 2007
Rating: 3 out of 5
Now that the xbox 360 is on the market I guess this is irrelevant but how hard would it have been for microsoft to program the console to be controlled by the game controllers. The remote works fine but I would recommend a Playstation console b/c of this huge flaw in the system. The xbox doesn't play some newer dvd's, don't know why. This product was worth the price but I never would have paid the original cost of $30+. Don't pay more than $10-15 for this product anywhere.
Near Perfect for Xbox media Center - Review written on December 12, 2007

Got this for my Xbox media center. Makes using the XBMC much easier than the game controler. I was able to ditch the dvd player and use the XBMC for all my Mp3's, videos, pics snd dvd's. Only real draw back is a lack of a power on/off button, but hey, I can get off my butt and turn the thing on if I got to.

I needed this kit really bad, I could not find it in any of the stores cause of it being an old system component. It works great.

If you have XBMC, navigating through the menus is much easier with this remote, it just feels more natural using a remote than a controller. The downside is you don't have variable speed scrolling like you do on the controllers L and R. Something I whished it had is a power on/off button.
Worlds cheapest replacement for a DVD player. - Review written on September 30, 2007

I bought this add-on for my XBOX when my DVD player began to give me trouble; I spent $1.95 plus shipping and now can use my XBOX for watching DVDs.
Always a good addon for the orginal xbox - Review written on September 22, 2007
Rating: 5 out of 5
When I got my first Xbox back in 02 or 03 I had to get the DVD remote with it as why have 10 things hooked to your TV when all you have to do is get the remote and you can play DVDs on your old Xbox. Now though I have a 360 and the old Xbox isn't even used but if all you have is the original Xbox then this is a great add to the system.
An excellent accessory - Review written on September 03, 2007

While I do not appreciate Microsoft's passing off the cost of the DVD licensing on the xBox to the consumer by forcing us to buy this little add-on, I have to admit that the convenience is quite nice. I just moved and it was either buy a new DVD player, or purchase this item. I would rather not have the new component, as my space is a premium.

Since this product is not available anymore in stores, it's great I could find it on this website at such a nice price.
Must have - Review written on June 17, 2007
Rating: 5 out of 5
First of all, you must have this kit in order to be able to playback dvd's on your xbox. The cool part is that once you have the sensor to plug in, a universal remote will work with it through an rca dvd signal. I'm so glad I purchased this product.

This remote control "kit" is a big disappointment. May as well just keep using the X-Box controller to access the DVD mode. The remote control "kit" doesn't eliminate any of the steps or aggrivation.
Doubles your xbox as a DVD Player, but lots of cons - Review written on March 26, 2007
Rating: 3 out of 5
PROS
- works fine. No IR connection problems.
- great for people that don't already have a DVD player.
CONS
- doesn't play DVDs in progressive scan. Why not? They can make games in 480p (old HD) for the xbox.
- takes up a controller port slot. Not a big deal, but if you often have 4 friends playing, you won't be able to leave it in all the time.
- no backlit or glow
- no eject button
- no power button. What? Never seen a remote without a power button. Thus you CANNOT turn your xbox on/off with this remote.
- cannot learn
- not universal. If you have lots of remotes, you're better off learning this one into a universal remote.
- many people already own a DVD player, many with progressive scan.

Awesome!! - Review written on March 13, 2007

This thing is awesome. My ps2 stopped playing dvds so i bought this and man what a buy. If you're xbox is hooked up to a vcr it wont quite work though. A new tv or modulator box should do the trick, and it could have a power and eject button, but other than that it is the best thing ive purchased for my xbox.
Easy Transition - Review written on March 12, 2007
Rating: 4 out of 5
Give microsoft a plus for including the DVD funtionality in the XBox, but a huge minus for requiring users to purchase an additional remote to use it. As for the device, it delivers as advertised. Just plug the sensor into one of the 4 controller slots, insert batteries into the remote (not included), insert your favorite DVD and press the menu button. Overall the remote is set up well and comfortable in the hand.
Worth the money. - Review written on February 12, 2007

If you want your Xbox to play DVD's this is the kit for you.
Of course, it would have been nice if Bill Gates would have just made Xbox's play DVD's to begin with, but I suppose they are all about making more $$$.
The product does work well, so I recommend it.

Ridiculous nickel and dime product from MS - Review written on November 26, 2005

I find it outrageous that Microsoft does not enable DVD playback with the basic game console. I have a PS2 and it doesn't require special enablement or a separate contol. I can simply put a DVD into the console and then I'm able to contol the playback using my game controller. Sure, if MS wants to charge for the remote, that would be fine for those customer that need/want that wireless convenience. However, I think this product is just another annoying anc costly "gotcha" from MS.

Saves you $50 - Review written on September 30, 2005

The Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit is very easy to set up and use. All you have to do is plug the little receiver into one of the controller ports, put in a DVD and enjoy. The buttons on the remote are responsive and easy to get used to. However, the Xbox DVD system is very simple. It doesn't have any eject buttons (something mentioned many times by other reviewers) and not as many options as more expensive stand-alone DVD players. You have to keep in mind that it was made for people who already have an Xbox and don't want to shell out an extra $50 for a DVD player that has a lot of special features when all they want is to be able to watch a movie. The DVD itself runs exactly as it would on a good stand-alone DVD player. It's sort of like one of those little $100 digital cameras. There isn't anything really special about them. They just take good pictures that you can put on your computer.

I know that many of you probably had DVD players before you picked up an Xbox. That's simply the case with early adopters. However, that doesn't mean you should automatically skip the Xbox remote. Firstly, you need a remote control kit for playback. You cannot simply stick in a DVD and start monkeying around with a controller. Sorry. There are several remotes to choose from, but the official model is comfortable and well laid out. If you've ever used an RCA remote than you can guess how it feels and how it's organized. I would guess that for many readers their Xbox is a secondary DVD player. Small, easy to use, and relatively affordable, the remote adds much value to your big, black box
