Fun, but very violent! - Review written on January 02, 2008

It's funny to listen to all the anti-violence advocates on here trying to ban games likes gta
HEY IDIOTS!:
why don't u try to take a stand against real violence acts? idk if you know this, but with or without GTA3 violence happens everyday. Lemme fill ya in, no innocent kids ever played this game and turned into charlie manson or ed gein okay?! if people didn't already like violence they wouldn't all go buy Grand Theft Auto would they? and there is never an instance where the game says: 'go kill a hooker', that is brought on entirely by whomever the player is. i dont kill hookers and shoot innocent people in my game cuz i don't want to but... if i did it wouldn't matter anyway cuz they're not real!!!! it is too far of a stretch to say that a game can be interpreted as REALITY. the us courts agree with me. now listen up cuz i'm only gunna say it once,
IF YOU PLAY THIS GAME AND THEN DECIDE ITS OK TO KILL IN REAL LIFE, YOU'RE CRAZY! the game doesn't brain wash you. i'm sorry, but regular smart non-retarded people like myself can play a game like this and not equate to to real-life. nuff said.
basically, it's an open environment game in which you must do missions to advance but the game play is completely non-linear. you can spend time cruising around town speeding thru traffic and going off jumps, or you can try to take on liberty city's police force. either way all good cuz it's just FANTASY. apparently some people have trouble telling the difference between this and reality

Here is a word that discribes this game: bad, I know that some people like bad as it helps to bring excitement to their otherwise mundane lives. But your life can be so much more if you use the time you play this game to improve you situation and get the respect you want by doing things for others. Oh yeah here are a few other words for this game: abominable,
amiss, atrocious, awful, bad news*, beastly, blah*, bottom out, bummer*, careless, cheap, cheesy*, crappy*, cruddy*, crummy*, defective, deficient, diddly*, dissatisfactory, downer*, dreadful, erroneous, fallacious, faulty, garbage, awful, gross*, grungy*, icky*, imperfect, inadequate, incorrect, inferior, junky*, lousy*, not good, off, poor, raunchy*, rough, sad, scuzzy, sleazeball, sleazy, slipshod, stinking, substandard, synthetic, the pits*, unacceptable, unsatisfactory

Awww man did this game rock all those years ago, it still rocks today.I nourish the freedom in this game, I really, really do!
It deserves the No.1 place of the best three games of 2001, with Halo in No.2 and Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons of Liberty in No.3.
The three games before GTA3 or Grand Theft Auto III as its officially called were GTA, GTA:London '69 and GTA, I admit I didn't like any of them, because they were 2D boo hiss
In GTA3 you are introduced for the very first time to Liberty City where your guy has been set up in a Bank robbery and arrested and must work his way up the crime ladder in order to get revenge on his ex-girlfriend, he luckily escapes because a bomb exploded while his convoy was halted by Comombian gangsters and luckily him and another man survives, 8-Ball he has you drive him to a safehouse and then introduces you to a member of the Italian-American Mafia(Leone Family) who owns a club called SC7 and you basically work your way from there.
Liberty City is a city that is made up of three islands all of which are corrupt in its own way, Portland a poor industrial island with no decent cars with the exception of the gangs, most of the residents here are homeless living under bridges and roaming the streets gazed. This is your first island and there are three gangs, the Chinese LC Triads who own a fishing buisness, the Leone Families who own mansions and Italian resturaunts, and the Diablo street gangstas who roam the streets in modded Stallion cars and use baseball bats as weapons
Then theres Staunton island, richer than Portland but has its fair share of corruption and homeless ness, there are three gangs that roam Staunton, Comlombian Cartel with powerful bluE 4x4s, Japanese Yakuza and the Yardies
And finally theres Shoreside Vale, the rich place with rich gangs, its got the Liberty Airport where you can catch your flight.
You don't get many weapons but here the list:
.45 caliber pistol, Mini Uzi, AK-47, M16, Stinger rocket launcher, flamethrower, grenades, Molotov petrol bombs and sniper rifles.
Since you could pretty much anything you like such as stealing cars and killing people, theres obviously guys that don't appreciate you dooing this, the Police of coarse and they'll be on your tail from when they see you hit someone all the way until you cause enough death and destruction where they'll need the National Guard to stop you.The Police are set out in Six stars:
1 STAR:The Police spot you do something petty like punch someone or steal a car, the nearest officer will come and attack you.
2 STARS:Now they know they aren't dealing with the ordinary, two more officers will arrive armed with .45s shooting at you
3 STARS:More severe, with officers coming from every street and they have deployed a Helicopter to try and stop you
4 STARS:They now have S.W.A.T. units with them, they come in armored vans and are armed with Uzi SMG's, they are a lot more forceful than normal Police grunts seeing as they are a para-military unit.
5 STARS:FBI specialists, armed with AK's these guys arrive in black suave Kuruma's with a mini siren, they will even kill themselves in order to bring you down
6 STARS:You eliminated cops, helicopters SWAT men and FBI agents now they have sent in the National Guard, a brance in the US Military that do the "at home" stuff, they come with big troop carrying trucks and destructive tanks that will destroy anything it touches, so its no good trying to drive away in a car, and if thats not enough they are armed with deadly M16 rifles that will kill you within 3 seconds of you coming within its range.
All in all GTA3 deserves a on-spot rating of 9.0 from me IMO
If you wish to play more sandbox games, here are a handful more:
*GTA:Vice City
*GTA:San Andreas
*Mercenaries
*Just Cause
*Saints Row(only on Xbox 360)
*DRIV3R
*Driver:Parallel Lines

Grand Theft Auto III or GTA3 as we commonly call it is simply out, a masterpiece, being the third chapter in the GTA series, but GTA and GTA2 were just little 2D driving games on the PS1 back in the late '90s, but we must agree they sucked for a PS1 game, that time Driver and Driver 2 were kings of its kind back then, and I could play Driver 2 for hours.
But Driver 2 was about to get a slap in the face by GTA, Rockstar games and DMA Design(now called R* North) deicided that for next-gen(at the time) PS2 they would release a 3D GTA, being proclaimed by Gamespot as the game "Driver 2 was meant to be" this was none other than GTA3.Today Driver has been trying to get back its place, but DRIV3R sucked donkeys and Driver:Parellel Lines even though it was great, it still had that GTA wannabe feel, but R* has GTA IV planned for PS3 and XBox 360, while Ubisoft has bought the Driver franchise off Atari and is developing Driver 5 for PC/360/PS3, has the Driver series driven to the right ally, or will its dark generation come back to haunt them(which is last-gen, PS2 and XBox)?
GTA3 is about a thug who was hitting Liberty City Bank with his girlfriend, but as they run for an alarm, she betrays him and shoots him, but the shot may have missed and put him into a state of shock, he was captured by the Police who have him under Maximum security by having the SWATs drive him and two other criminals to jail after sentencing, he was given 10 years. But the SWAT van gets ambushed by Colombian drug dealers, who hold up the van and rescue and old man prisoner, this gives him and another man to escape. However a bomb goes off and destroys the Callahan Bridge and luckily him and the other guy survive.
The other guy is a career thug called 8-BALL who has got your guy to drive him to a friend of his, while in return work so he can earn money. The game kicks off from there
The guy you play hasn't got a name, nor can he actually speak or even react properly, so he hasn't really any form of identification other than all the crime boss's lap dog, being loyal to whomever has signed him up for service, regardless of who they are.
However in GTA:San Andreas, his girlfriends name is Catelina and his name is Claude, I know thats him in San Andreas because he doesn't talk and he has the exact same clothing and same attitude as he does in GTA3.The GTA don't do cameos off other GTA characters, it contributes to the story.
Not bad, but by no means a classic. (3.5 stars, rounded down) - Review written on May 21, 2006

I know that hyperactive, violence-obsessed fanboys will immediately bombard me with "Not Helpful" votes for giving the "almighty" Grand Theft Auto III an average score, but let me explain myself.
This is a fun game. It's enormous (3 huge city subdivisions). It's definitely innovative (the influential "free roaming" game design), but it wasn't even the most innovative game of 2001 (a title that goes to Ico, as far as I'm concerned). I like the explicit content factor. Anything that pisses off those fragile, politically correct left-wing senators has my approval. Being a nameless "mafia guy" is a pretty fun experience. Cruising around Liberty City while listening to talk radio. Causing mayhem when the missions become dull. Finding all the hidden packages...
...but now, allow me to explain the problems I have with GTA III:
Everything in the game feels very vulnerable. It's a bit too harsh on taking damage and dying. (maybe for realisms sake?) The sports cars, in a word, suck. They're far too flimsy, and if you use one to escape from the cops, it'll most likely blow up before you manage to get a good hiding spot.
The game gives you all these wonderful weapons to play with: baseball bat, pistols, uzis, grenades, Molotov Cocktails, 2 types of machine guns, flamethrower, sniper rifle, and rocket launcher. Unfortunately, if you actually try to USE any of these to try and kill people, you'll take too much damage too fast, or alert the cops and trigger a nasty chase.
To get the maximum amount of fun out of the game, you HAVE to use the cheat codes (which I'm betting is the main reason people still play it). Oh, and you also can't swim or explore the insides of most buildings, for reasons unknown. Which is ridiculous for a game that prides itself on realism.
It's not as overrated as Halo, but I have no idea why the reviewers at EGM gave this a gold award. Check it out to see a decent game behind a giant cloud of overhype.

This is the type of game you can play everyday and never get bored. I've owned this game for some time and I still play it off and on. To tell you the truth, I lost count of how many times I beat the game and I pretty much know the storyline by heart (who doesn't). Anyway, in this game you shoot, kill, fight, drive, work (missions), etc. The first time I played this game I almost passed out. You have the freedom to do anything you want. And I mean anything. Sure, there's blood and bad language, but that's because it's an adult game (M Rated). So it's definitely not a game for children to play, unless your child understands that it's just a game!
As for the game, the graphics are very good, the gameplay is easy to get used to and the music on the radio stations are just amazing.
I won't tell you anything else except that you buy this game immediately. And for the price you can't complain!
An excellent game which changed the gaming world forever - Review written on March 05, 2006

While the first few GRAND THEFT AUTO video games were popular, no one could have anticipated the enormous popularity which surrounded GRAND THEFT AUTO III after its release. After playing the game, it's easy to see why it was (and still is) so popular. You play a silent young thug who is freed from police custody after a miraculous accident. The thug - you - immediately begins getting his hands dirty again, working for (and against) the Mafia, the Triads, the Yakuza, and other gangs. Throughout the game you shoot, blow up, run over, and torture anybody who gets in your way - be they criminals or mere pedestrians. One of the things which makes GTA III unique is that it was one of the first video games allowing you to explore your surroundings and perform side missions in-between the primary story missions - and believe me, there's much to explore. There are three islands, each vastly different, with "Hidden Packages" hidden on each island. While not on a primary story mission, you can perform police missions, where you track down and destroy Liberty City's criminals; ambulance missions, where you race against the clock to deliver the injured to the hospital; or taxi missions, where you rush to deliver the hurrying citizens of the city. The game plays, at times, like one big crime movie - a violent, often funny, crime movie. Speaking of movies, numerous celebrities voice characters from this game, including Michael Madsen, Frank Vincent, and Kyle MacLachlan. If you get sick of driving around the city in silence, you can listen to one of many different radio stations, each boasting a different type of music. Lastly, you can steal a great many different types of vehicles; each drives just as you'd expect it would, and each can be damaged realistically. While it's not as brilliant as its sequel, VICE CITY, GRAND THEFT AUTO III is an excellent game which changed the gaming world forever.
The Best GTA Game - Review written on November 12, 2005

I'll just try to make this review nice and short: this is the game I've been dreaming of since I was about 8 years old. You can drive around big cities, get out of your car whenever you want, and shoot anybody at any time, and have cops hot on your trail. Here's my stack on this game:
Graphics: 7/10. The graphics are not good. They are very blocky and overall pretty painful to look at until you get used to it. Some effects are good though, such as when cars explode. These graphics were probably considered fairly good in 2003, but now they are just sub-par.
Sound: 8.5/10. The sound is awesome. Awesome radio stations, people screaming, great sound of rain hitting the pavement, the guns sound great, everything is pretty good soundwise in this game; just not the best.
Control: 8/10. I am a SOCOM player and I like to use the analog sticks at the same time to move, and I like to use R1 to shoot; but that's not the case here. You can move with two analog sticks, but it's not very easy to do, and isn't worth doing anyways. The cars all steer differently and drive differently, which adds to more realism; which is extremely cool, and there are a lot of different cars depending on which island you're on.
Fun: 8/10. This is a great game; the best in the series; and I have great fun with it, and this game doesn't seem to get old. Sure there are times when it will make you want to put it down for awhile, but you'll start playing again whenever you want to take your anger out on something.
( Note: This game is rated 'M' and is not intended for people under the age of 17. )
Even though I'm 14. ;)
The best game ever made - Review written on July 12, 2005

Wow, Grand Theft Auto 3....where can I begin? This game is just great.
The game is about your playing as a criminal who's trying to make it in cities full of cops, gangs, and lots of pedestrians. The game is very, very realistic with a large variety of cars (from cars to really nice, fast, sporty cars, to slow boring cars that old people drive in) great variety of people (not only white people in this game, but you have black and chinese pedestrians/gangsters also) with people with all kinds of different clothing, different body sizes, (fat, or skinny) different voices, and alot of stuff like that. I was simply blown away from the highly amazing artwork and detail put into this game, and the maps and the cities....I mean the cities, buildings, roads, and places you see in this game seriously look like cities you would see in real life, I mean it is so creative, the architects or designers of this game really knew what they were doing with all the roads, buildings, and map plannings. I also like how they put city/county names in this game just like in real life. Very amazing professional work.
The whole game is about your playing as a criminal, whose trying to make it in cities full of gangs, and you will be working for alot of the gangs. There's lots of different missions...whether it's about killing a gang rival, stealing or robbing something valuable, busting someone out of jail, or all kinds of missions. If you're not doing a mission for a gang boss or a criminal, you can also do emergency car missions (like Taxi car missions, Ambulance missions, Police car missions, even Firefighter truck missions) Taxi Car Missions, is when you pick people up and drop them off at places for money, Ambulance missions are when you pick injured people up in an Ambulance and drop them off at the hospital, Police car missions are when you kill criminals who are breaking the law, and Firefighter truck missions are missions where you put out things that are on fire. You also have side missions, like finding hidden packages, doing unique stunt jumps on your car, and doing rampages (rampages is when you destroy something or kill people in a certain amount of time for money) and doing those side missions can help boost up your criminal rating also.
This is a very great game, endless hours of fun. It took me like 4 months before I beat the whole game the first time I played it, but each time I played it, it got easier and easier, and I found more hidden packages, and all kinds of side missions. Each time I beat the game, I delete my saved game, then start all over again, trying to get a higher criminal rating than I did last time. And you get a higher criminal rating by killing pedestrians, gangsters, criminals, doing gang boss missions, doing vehicle missions, and doing side missions. A very, very, fun game with tons of options. You can steal any car that's out there. You can randomly kill or beat up any pedestrian or gang member out there. It is so awesome and so much fun and exciting to get stuff started in this game in then have the whole police force after you. It's fun to just start beating up some gang members and have everyone else in that gang rush after you. The reason why Grand Theft Auto games are so much fun is because it gives you crimes and stuff to do in the game that you would NEVER be able to do in real life. You would never be able to just blow up any random car in real life. You would never be able to beat up some random person on the street in real life. You would never be able to run around shooting police officers or getting in fights with gangs in real life, because if you do, you would of course get in serious trouble. Do it in the game, and you're not hurting or harming anyone, of course. Lots of fun.
Oh, and also....about all the people who have been complaining about this game....about how it's too violent or whatever...this game is definitely not for everyone. I've also noticed that it seems like the majority of people who hate this game are mothers who have 9-14 year old kids. If you're a mom, whose over-protective, and all she can think of is having good strong morals, and raising your kids up to be nice, orderly, and mannerly, then no, this IS NOT the game for you, and no, you WILL NOT like this game! So quit running around talking about how this game causes more evil in this world or how this game could effect people mentally or how this game is a bad influence on people, and how this game is only good for people who want to grow up to be criminals in real life. Listen, this is just a GAME, and calm down, and people really need to stop over-reacting. If you can't be able to tell the difference between real life and virtual gaming, then no, you shouldn't be playing this game. If you're too mentally retarded to tell that grand theft auto is just a game, and you take it too seriously, and do the same type of acts in real life, then you shouldn't be playing this game. If your mind can't be able to handle all the crimes and violence, then again, you should not be playing this game. I really feel people should learn what I just said. Angry, disturbed mothers are always saying stuff like "People have gotten run over, because the criminals who did it play grand theft auto" again, if you're not mentally mature enough to understand that this is a game, then don't buy it, please. If a game comes out, and you don't like it, then you don't HAVE to buy it, and you don't HAVE to play it. Grow up, quit whining like a baby, and get some maturity and some common sense.
Other than that, I really enjoy playing this game, I got this game in October on 2003, and I still play it, up to this day. It is always entertainment for me, and it never gets old. Out of all the Grand Theft Auto's (I also have Vice City and San Andreas) I would have to say that Grand Theft Auto 3 is the best one out of all of them, and you could get the most fun out of it. It's hard to explain...even though Vice City and San Andreas are newer than Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto 3's settings, gangs, places, and storyline are just better than Vice City and San Andreas. The gangs in GTA 3 are easier to understand, the places, cities, settings, and roads in GTA 3 are much more nice and easier to understand (because the graphics in Vice City and San Andreas are different from GTA 3, and it looks too bright and blurry in Vice City and San Andreas than it does in GTA 3) and Grand Theft Auto 3, in my opinion is the best out of all Grand Theft Auto games, and my brother agrees also. Overall, if you like crazy violent action games, then this is a must have. Grand Theft Auto 3 has got to be one of the best games ever made.
Still the best incarnation of GTA - Review written on June 24, 2005

GTA3 is the epitomy of a great modern video game. In short, the fun seems endless; in a game where the prize is highly pined for (and not easily attained) the obsession with this game becomes sickening. Even after you finish the final mission, you will want to do it all over again, seeing how long it takes you while setting new personal records and goals to overcome the next time you play. So far, I have played the entire game twice, finding the process fun both times.
With the real objective of the game aside, the whole setting and extraneous features of the game make the game worth buying. My friends and I would have competitions to see who could last the longest in the game without dying or getting arrested, all while going on a massive rampage through the city with military tanks and zealous law enforcement officers on our tail!! Even driving around in the taxi is pretty fun, not to mention the vigilante missions and generally screwing with the pedestrians in the game.
In order to boil the entire game down into a few bullet points (no pun intended) here's the game in a nutshell:
1. Over fifty different missions of varying in degrees of hardness
2. Three different islands with completely different settings
3. 11 different weapons to "take care of business"
4. Cool cars modeled after real life luxury sports cars (also crappy cars)
5. Gang members hounding you and trying to kill you (especially when I was trying to accomplish something like a mission)
6. A twisted police force that will go after you even if you accidentally bump into their car
7. Trains and Planes (which you can fly with A LOT of practice and patience)
8. Different radio stations playing different types of music (there is even a talk station, which was my personal favorite)
9. Hours of endless fun that will undoubtedly consume your life and leave you wanting more
Drawbacks?
Well, the only obvious drawback, other than the fact that the game takes probably a week of non-stop play to beat (the first time), is the violence. If you don't like violent games or blowing defenseless people away with a rocket launcher, don't buy the game. I will be honest with you though, the graphics and sound is awesome, definitely a significant step up from GTA2 (which leaves something to be desired) The detailing of the characters and cars is impeccable despite the somewhat early release of this game (2001). However, I was somewhat disappointed with a lack of interactivity with respect to the buildings. I haven't played the other two incarnations of GTA (Vice City and San Andreas), but this isn't a big deal because the game is pretty time entertaining as it is.
Bottom line: buy this game if you are mature enough to handle the violence and miscegenation (oh yeah I forgot to mention another feature of GTA3: promiscuous sex). I haven't played the other two GTA's which have succeeded this one, but from all the reports I've gotten from my friends, they all say GTA3 is the best.
GTA3 AND ONLY GTA3!!!! - Review written on June 03, 2005

GTA3 is probably the best game on earth with it's graphics, gameplay and storyline!!
The storyline missions all attach together and everything you do all makes sense with the story!!! The graphics are pretty good, and for some reason when you kick people to death when they're on the floor the blood that squirts out looks all squared shape sort-of, but to me it just makes the game a bit better!! Also having a character who dosen't talk is just awsome, so no more annoying comments on the street or "f**k you" conversations in the street!!! Also just having about 11 weapons dosen't bother me, since they all act really well, and when the character poppin' (shootin'/ firin') them, since he can't talk, he seems just like a real "I DON'T GIVE A F**K" type of crook for a good old "GRAND THEFT AUTO" game!!
The sound effects of a baseball and his fist when killing or simply hitting someone are just absolutely brilliant, the way the blood comes out depending on how he hits them!!! The game is relatavley hard but when you play it through again you'll be able to do the missions in just one or two trys!! You'll actually get excited about moving on and out to the next islands and actually getting to see what they're, since you'll unlock 4 things at the same time once you get to the second island ; THE AVAILABILITY FOR DRIVING BOATS, THE SUBWAY, THE CALLAHAN BRIDGE AND THE PORTER TUNNEL!!! Another thing is a new boss, and the good thing is that in the first island they won't let you get to the final missions without completing all the other missions by the other bosses by making up excuses to do with the story, the good thing about this is that when you get to the second island if you go back to the first wherever you go you'll probably get killed wherever you step foot in!!!
GET GTA3 AND YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO PLAY ANY OTHER GAME AGAIN!!!
thank you!!!
