I just bought this set based on conversations with family, friends, sales personnel, and other's reviews. All say Farberware is a quality company with good customer service and quality products. One thing I have noticed about these knives is they require more maintenance than a lesser quality knife.
For those thinking of getting this product, please do your research prior to purchase. Here are some things you should keep in mind when buying kitchen equipment.
1) Blade material: High carbon steel will keep its sharpness, but requires HAND WASHING (no dishwasher for the lazy)
2) Blade design: Things to look for are forged blades, full tang (the blade is actually inside the entire handle) and a bolster (a section of the knife in-between the handle and the actual cutting surface designed to protect the user from injury)
3) Comfort: does the knife fit your hand. Folks with smaller hands may desire a smaller chef's knife 6" vs. 8")
Please remember this products says right on the box HAND WASH
Keeping that in mind, this is a great product for it's price and you will enjoy years of use with it.

Pro Forged or Classic Forged - Review written on April 22, 2005

Which to get the Farberware Pro Forged 15pc set for sixty dollars (my extra piece was a cleaver) or the Farberware Classic Forged 14pc set for thirty dollars? They both seemed like a good deal so I decided to just buy both and see for myself. I haven't actually used these yet but have opened the boxes and examined them. The 6 steak knives seem a little nicer with the Pro, but both are stamped run of the mill quality. As for the rest of the knives: The steel and sharpness in both sets seems to be the same quality. I actually seem to like the bolsters on the Classic set better. I can't see how/why the Pro is worth 2x the price of the Classic. After I get a chance to use both, I'll update my review if this opinion changes. Both are made in China, but seem like a good deal if you don't want to go for the expensive German or Japanese knives.

No need to purchase an expensive set of chefs knives when these pro forged are just as good.I've been handling knives all my life, and can sharpen to a razors edge, this is a fine set of knives for the money.Dont under estimate these knives because they are very sharp. And also i've read they rust in spots, mine never rust but i know knives and take good care of them.My opinion you can't go wrong with this set of knives.

I just received this set and used them immediately. The knives are lightweight and comfortable - extremely sharp! Although made in China, which I try to avoid, there is quality here. Farberware products are exceptional values, and this knife set is proof you need not spend alot for quality and value. With proper care (hand washing + drying) and an occasional stroke of the steel, I am sure that I will use these knives for many years to come. I recommend these knives, as well as most any Farberware product.
Good knives will rust - Review written on August 28, 2004

I haven't received these knives yet, but the fact that they will rust helped convince me to buy. High-carbon steel blades do that, they also hold an edge better than other alloys, typically. If a knife is too "stainless" then the nickel content is so high that it's use as a knife is compromised. It's a trade off, but most higher end knives require to be kept clean and dry, and kept out of the dishwasher to avoid having the temper slowly baked out of them. A good knife holds an edge reasonably well, and is durable against chipping or breaking (another compromise) but also is easy to sharpen once it gets dull (another compromise). There are exceptions like exotic ceramic blades, other non-iron alloys, or cheap stamped steel serrated "ginsu clones" which are really more of a saw than a knife. I'm picky about knives, but I liked the price on this set and took a gamble.
Good, but more work to maintain. - Review written on August 17, 2004

These knives are good. Not the greatest, but good. I've been using them for a couple weeks now and they're fine for what I need. I have two complaints, though.

1. I have found that I need to hand wash and towel dry them IMMEDIATELY after using them. This is somewhat of a pain in the you-know-what. Why do I need to wash and dry them? See #2.

2. A couple of my steak knives developed small rust spots on them after I left them in my sink overnight. A couple other reviewers mentioned this and I just assumed that it magically wouldn't happen to me. In the end, I was able to scour them off, but it makes me worry. My mother says this has to do with the quality of the steel, but they're forged (not pressed), so I thought this wouldn't be a problem.

Other than that, they WERE sharp right out of the box. And, if for some reason yours aren't, it COMES with a sharpener, so you don't have to go out and spend all kinds of money on some fancy blade sharpener.

I really enjoy all the knives/tools that this set comes with. Yeah, it's a pain to wash and dry the knives right after using them, but it means I'm taking better care of them. Hopefully, this means they'll last and really, really long time.
A Big Disappointment - Review written on June 05, 2004

I'd read great things about these knives -- they were even rated a Best Buy by Consumer Reports. However, having now owned them for a week, I can say they are a big disappointment, and I would not recommend them. Contrary to what others have written, the knives are comfortable, well-balanced and feel great in your hands. However, they are very very dull -- you can't cut anything with them the way they arrive. I ended up spending $ 120.00 dollars on a knife sharpener to try to make this set usable, but while that improved things, the knives still don't feel that sharp. Finally, the knives don't appear to be "stainless" steel. After one hand-washing, three of the knives became discolored, and now have "rust"-like spots on them that will not come off. It looks like things get worse and worse with each use and washing. Overall, it would have been worth it to spend $150.00 to $200.00 more dollars to get something decent, and I could have afforded that with the money I had to spend on the knife sharpener!

We bought this set about a month ago and we have been really happy with it since the day we got it. I was looking for a nice set and was willing to spend the extra money on nice knives, but when I came upon the reviews of this set and how everyone loved them, I decided to give them a try. The handles are nice and easy to grip. They are somewhat heavy, but I like that to guide me in cutting. You won't be disappointed with this set.

The blades on these knifes are effective, and it's nice that they can go in the dishwasher. The shears are great. However, the knifes are heavy and the handles don't feel good in your hand. If you're going to do daily cutting, go for more expensive knifes.

I bought this set based on CR's review fo them as a "Best buy." For comparison I also bought one of the Wusthof Grand Prix knives, which were rated the best overall. I would say that the Wusthof is a slightly better knife, but I fully agree with CR that the price difference is not worth paying. The Farberware set is very good and cuts really well. It stays sharp and does everything you might ask a knife set to do. After pondering the issue a while, I have decided I would be foolish to spend the extra money for the higher end knives. This set is really a great deal -- you get a very good set of knives at a very reasonable price.

We purchased this set about 1 month back and have found it to be very nice and does what we need it for. We are not chefs, just everyday people with everyday kitchen needs. We use the full set and found each knife to be very sharp, feels good in the hands, and is able to cut very well.
