Old Magazines Sent, Not Current Issues - Review written on September 15, 2008

I love Vanity Fair, but after paying for the subscription, I received the current issue that had been on the stands 2 weeks, and I already had it. Then on Sept. 11, I got an old issue that was on the stands in July. I have yet to receive the current issue that I see on newstands. So basically, I have yet to receive a current issue and wonder if I ever will. By the looks of the old magazine they sent me, I am getting the returns from the news outlets, not current publications. Big disappointment. The magazine is great, but not the service.
Picked only one from all the others. - Review written on March 31, 2008

I quit subscribing to all fashion magazines. The models are emaciated and look like freaks. Our society is sick. Women are not supposed to be angular, they are naturally rounded; These magazines include Vogue, W, Elle, Cosmo. I keep Vanity Fair around for the articles. Well written ones on politics, art, business, and life in general. Loved the stories on Eli Broad, Rupert Murdoch, George Bush, the Obamas, Clintons, White House strategies, Karl Rove, and wasn't there one on Brooke Astor? Takes a long time to read one issue. Kiss Kiss!
Avoid unless you like to be told how to think - Review written on April 17, 2007

Unless you want the Editor's liberal political views SHOVED down your throat, avoid this magazine. It leans to the left so hard that you have to lie on your side to even read it. (And no, I am NOT a Republican or Democrat, but an Independent who looks at all sides). The Editor of this magazine has a huge agenda to get the Democrats back in power, he bashes Bush and the Republican party over the head with a 10-ton hammer on a monthly basis, yet worships eco-phonies like Laurie David and celebrities who want the rest of us to drive eco-friendly cars while they fly the world in their private jets. (I understand Laurie and her friends like Sheryl Crow ARE "trying" to wean themselves off this practice by cutting down on their private jet hopping trips a wee bit and using a huge gas guzzling bus that is criss-crossing the country instead, but that poor Laurie is finding this hard to give up. What hyprocrites these Hollywood folks are!) Though I am personally trying to do my bit for the environment, I hate when I read issues like the current "Green" issue where these so called eco-environmentalists really only want us "common people" to make the changes. This used to be a great fashion, entertainment and current event magazine with a lot of in-depth articles, but now it is only a political platform publication. I now will just throw it away as soon as it arrives when I receive it, until my subscription expires.
One of the better glossy magazines out there in the world of make believe - Review written on August 22, 2006

I don't normally like glossy magazines that think too much of themselves, I think that they were invented to be dumped on coffee tables to look good when you have visitors around for coffee but if you want a really good and intelligent read, buy TIME or Newsweek.
However I will make an exception in the case of Vanity Fair, I actually subscribe to it which came about after I read a really good article in it about racism. I was quite impressed, it was well written and quite unbiased, rare in a magazine that is known for its skinny models/actors/musicians who lounge elegantly as they give interviews whilst looking the camera and say in hot sultry voices, "Darling, I'm an artist, it's my passion, my love, that's why I do it!"
I won't say that Vanity Fair has given me too much food for thought but it has been enough for me to take out a year's subscription to see if they can come up with anything else that is remotely intelligent and thoughtful and they haven't done too badly up to now.
If you really want to get a glossy coffee table magazine then get this, it will serve two purposes, one it will look good on your table and two you might just find someting interesting in it to read whilst you are flicking through it.
A Formulaic Magazine that Always Entertains - Review written on August 02, 2006

VANITY FAIR is a highly recommended monthly magazine for people who enjoy reading. Packed with lengthy articles, gorgeous photography and blurby information, it never fails to entertain the reader. It is the perfect companion for a lazy afternoon at the beach or on quiet plane ride across country.
The VANITY FAIR forumla is simple: slap a photo of a celebrity on the cover and inside offer a wide variety of articles, including Hollywood puff pieces, Domenick Dunne's true crime accounts, in-depth articles about international scandals, Christopher Hitchens essays and profiles of colorful, unknown characters.
Though this formula has changed little since the magazine was revived in the 1980s by its now legendary editrix Tina Brown, the magazine's new editor, Canadian-born Graydon Carter, has succeeded in putting his own personal stamp on VANITY FAIR. In virtually every issue Carter uses his Letter from the Editor to bash US President Bush.
Though I do not begrudge Carter his right to speak his mind, after months of reading Carter's criticism, I get bored with these relentless rants.
Still I highly recommend a VANITY FAIR subcription to anyone who enjoys reading.

If Vanity is Wrong I don't Want To Be Right - Review written on February 08, 2006

Let me say straight up, this is a great magazine..it is one of the few magazines that is consistantly good. I have been a subscriber for seven years and I can say without reservations that this is one of the best magazines in print. The contributing writers like, Christopher Hitchens are first rate, I will admit Hitchens is an aquired taste, but he always makes me think..and laugh everytime I read his essay's, whether I agree or not. I also enjoy reading Dominic Dunne's diary, he really does have a great life, and he knows everyone..who's anyone, granted he is a total gossip and a social butterfly, but he knows it, he is in on the joke so to speak. I was afraid the quality of the magazine would suffer when the singular Tina Brown left, but Greydon Carter has continued her steller helmsmanship. I highly recommend this magazine, I really don't know a soul who has subscribed to this magazine that has not loved it..honest.
