I am 13, and I know I am young, but I am becoming curious of many different things and am changing in so many ways now. Seventeen is one of the magazines that really affects my life. This magazine is very resourceful and also fun. One thing to say, there isn't that much bad information that kids shouldn't be reading, but parents, I do advise that you review the magazine before letting your child read it. They have the fashion section, where not just one body type is included, but all body types and they have tons of different styles. They have great style tips too which I bet you'll like. They also have the beauty section which has tips on how to apply your makeup, and they have a wide variety of different makeup looks, so you're not stuck with the one look that has too much makeup on. They have the feature articles, which are both fun and informing. Time to time, they'll have an article on sex (just to say that to people who won't want to be reading that). They have many other things in the magazine like Tramarama which is embarassing stories, 17 Mission, which is an article that gets the attention of the reader to focus on everyday problems, like global warming or breast cancer. I hope you enjoyed this review as much as I love the magazine, but the only way you can really tell if you like the magazine is to just go check it out at your local grociery store or bookstore.

I am 13, and I have to say, I know I'm still a young child, but I am growing, and I am becoming curious about different things and am changing in so many ways. Seventeen is one of the magazines that actually makes a difference in my life. It is fun, but also informs me on many things that will eventually cover several aspects of my life. I don't recommend this magazine for anyone under 12 (Seventeen doesn't have that much innapropriate information for young teens. Parents, I do consider that you review Seventeen before you let your child read it. Seventeen does NOT focus too much on celebrities, even though they will have one or two sections in each issue relating to celebrities. They have the fashion section, which has tons of actually useful style tips and embrace ALL body types. The beauty section has great tips on how to apply your makeup, and they have different looks, so you don't only have one makeup look where they have a bunch of makeup and it is overpowering your face. There are lots of options. There are the feature articles, which are always fun to read (and informing). I definitley will continue subscribing to this magazine because I thoroughly enjoy it, and I hope that you will too. But, the only way to really know if you like it is to check it out at a your local grociery store or drugstore. It all comes out to YOUR opinion, not mine, but I hope you enjoyed this review.
A pretty girly magazine with potential to diversify - Review written on August 29, 2006

I was looking for a magazine to get a friend's teenage daughter who is at an age where she is interested in pop stars, beauty tips, fashion, celebrity news with a tasty bite, a bit of serious writing to make her think; after all she is at an age where she has to face the real world.
I have to say Seventeen fitted all of the above criteria and it did it well, the photography was good, the writing style up-beat and smart, not too much talking down to the reader, however I did have one gripe that might offend people and I apologize if it does, but did anyone else look at this magazine and think, "What a white read!"
My friend's daughter is mixed race and though I think she would like Seventeen from a girly point of view, I do think she will find it hard at times to identify with, because it does come across as "quite white."
All the same it is a good magazine; it has well written articles, good photography and knows how to target its audience.
All the same I will be giving it a miss on a subscription level for the moment as I don't think it is really suitable for someone who is not white, maybe in the future when it diversifies.

I have subscriptions to a few magazines, and I have to say, SEVENTEEN, is the one I'm always looking forward to. This magazine has a little bit of everything- fashion and make-up tips, how to be healthy (not just stick thin!), tips for school, fun (not very useful, but fun) stuff on guys and love, teen stories, and important information to be aware of. It's fun, but also informing.
The models are normal girls, and this mag shows things that not only a size 0 or 2 girl can wear, but also clothing that can be worn by a girl who's size 4, 8, or 16. Many styles from girly to goth are shown, not just one. The clothing and accessories are also affordable, and can be found at stores in your nearby mall.
SEVENTEEN isn't all fashion. It's really all about embracing who you are and making the most of life. It's about feeling good about yourself and loving yourself for who you are, and not what you aren't. I've used some of the tips on health, skin care, feeling good, and make-up, and you know what? They do work, and are actually helpful (***gasp***).
The celebrity interviews are very good, and such that you can relate to them. The stories about things in teens' lives are also very good- some are sad, but they all make you aware of what really goes on out there.
It's a wonderful magazine. It doesn't have an overload of ads like Teen Vogue or Elle Girl, while still including fashion (though I will say not as much as these two mags, because these two are almost entirely all how to look good). SEVENTEEN however, has a bit more fashion than Teen People, Teen People having more stories and such (though it is right up there with SEVENTEEN). SEVENTEEN is a happy medium. It's an awesome magazine!

This magazine is great for pre-teens~teens because it has affordable fashion, cute make-up, issues that teens can really relate to, and best of all, interesting articles.
There are so many magazines out there for children ~ pre-teens but most of them are childish/too old. There are disturbing articles and some which I personally think is just silly. But in Seventeen (and to that girl who kept saying Atoosa has no fashion sense, YOU have no fashion sense) there is really things that you can understand, most of which you need to know but are afraid to ask. The clothes are cute and affordable, and for fashionable ladies, there is always a Seventeen Splurge! which shows some really cool designer labels which you can buy to treat yourself. Teen Vogue, and Elle Girl, they have some nice clothes, but you double take on the prices. Most girls (except for one reader who seems to be able to buy anything she wants) cannot afford such clothes. Plus, you see most girls, and they are NOT wearing clothes straight from the runway. They are wearing clothes that they find cute from NORMAL stores at the mall.
Seventeen is a magazine for girls who are fashionable, fun and fabulous (okay, corny) but its true. It's much better for teens than all the other magazines out there.
A Message To Parents - Review written on December 31, 2005

I think that Seventeen is an excellent magazine for teenagers. The health section is great, fashion tips are fabulous, and anything that happens to be about sex is informative.
Sex Articles: Come on people, if you want to keep your daughters away from this stuff they might as well live in a convent. Your daughters are going to know way more than you think and better they hear it from some place that gives them the truth and not from a friend who means well but just doesn't know anything. Sure, there is nothing that says "DON'T HAVE SEX" but it gives girls what they need to hear and then your parenting will decide when and what they do.
Health: These days there isn't a girl around who doesn't want to be stick thin. It isn't their fault, it's the media. The good thing about Seventeen is that it shows girls instead of how to loose weight, how to be healthy. They have great food ideas, exersize plans and an over all healthy attitude towards weight loss and body image.
Fashion: Seventeen has one of the best fashion sections out of all of the teen magazines. Yeah, it is fun to see the occasional Chanel or Marc Jacobs outfit in a magazine but not when it plasters the pages. Seventeen suggests affordable outfit ideas from drop-dead-gorgeous sling backs to don't-you-wish-you-knew-me jeans. Their "Splurge" outfits are just the right amount of occasional fantasy.
Fun: They've got their share of cutesy quizzes and embarrassing stories because they realize that teens aren't adults and they still need a little childish fun. There are decoration tips, organization advice and some of the best stress reliever ideas I've ever seen.
Note: They do have a regular article called "17 Real Life" which is usually okay with the occasional disturbing story. However, they do have a "17 Warning" on the bad ones and you could simply request that your daughter, if she's young, not read those. I highly suggest this magazine.
To those who say that this magazine is mindless and turns your daughters into airheads I suggest you hear me out. Nothing turns your daughter into an "airhead." Perhaps an unhealthy dose of magazine reading and web surfing will make them slightly superfical but it is just a phase and will pass guaranteed. However, a monthly fashion magazine does not melt the brain nor fry brain cells. In fact, it probably does more good than it does damage.

Simply Seventeen, FYI anouther stupid girl magizine - Review written on December 10, 2005

When I first picked up seventeen, I was a little ify. Seventeen is ment for girls from 15-22. Anyone under will feel uncomterable reading it. It's alittle over the top with you're image. The magizine reapeats itself alot, for instance I have a january issue, and the december issue, they both have a huge sections on make-overs, which I personally think is stupid. I'd rather read a magizine with $600 clothes. The health section is always about how to get thin and attract boys. FYI boys are not the center of the world.
Nor is hearing about celebrities. I don't get magizines. Can't there be one magizine with some stuff about real people, not models, who's faces have been airbrushed. I mean come on. From July to now the magizine is seriously heading down to Tiger Bop and Cosmo girl. Seventeen does have clothes around normal pricing, I haven't seen anything over $200 including prom dresses.
For instance:
Teen Vogue: $390
17: $35
Teen Vogue: $809
17: $100
Huge difference. Most of the clothes, are trying to be sexy and other junk. Almost everything is about boys and how to attraxt them. Some articles are pointless, and there just there to waste paper. I have absolutely no interested reading about a girl who was sexually harassed by her teacher, and etc.
Not one issue of 17, I have seen, has done an articles on vegiterians, katrina, or any important, WORLDWIDE STUFF. They briedfly mentioned somthing in the november issue, that was it on Katrina. Their love & Sex section is nothing more, then how to get pregant the wrong way, or have sex for fun. This magizine doesn't seem to know even what love is!?
Their heath section is simply how to get your best butt. Oh yeah, my butt is very important, it should be the best big whoop. What is up with the 17 show, it basicly just makes fun of girls in school. The girls have been forced to do awful stuff, the people even put cameras in the bathroom miror, yep taking a shower is easy with a camera two feet away.
My overall opinion of the magizine is that it's trashy, celebrity stupid, and focuses to much on self images. I give it 2 **.

Seventeen is definitely NOT what it used to be. There is something for everyone, from AMAZING fashion and beauty articles that cater to girls of all skin colors and body types to scintillating stories on politics, health, and issues that affect real girls, such as teen pregnancy and eating disorders. The sex articles are for older girls only, but they do offer some sobering thoughts (read the "Hook-Up Report" in the July 2005 issue and you'll know what I mean.) It promotes self esteem and isn't all about how to attract boys, like its slightly less mature counterpart, Girls Life. It shows all sides of a variety of touchy issues. I recomend Seventeen to all girls of all races, creeds, and political standings.

Seventeen has a great editor. She transformed the magizine from ad space to interesting, well-written articles. It has a good amount of beauty, fashion, and hair tips but it also talks about more current issues, like gays, child abuse, suicide, health and eating habits, religon, ect. Dont get me wrong, this magizine isnt depressing or anything, it acually maintaines it's upbeat tone throughout. But it does it without making my brain turn to mush. enough said.
