Great heater maybe just not for tents with alot of ventilation - Review written on November 18, 2008

Rating: 3 out of 5

So I shopped around for a heater for some time to keep my girlfriend warm during a late fall camping trip. Admittedly my tent is really a two season tent. It has alot of mesh and thus wouldn't work all that well with this type of heater. The reason being that the heater basically heats the area directly in front and above it. I think if a reflector of some sort that could focus the heat all towards the front would make this heater much more practical.

When I stood in front of it while I changed I felt that it did a great job but my girlfriend lying on an air mattress directly in front of the heater couldn't really feel the heat. (I didn't want to keep the heater too close to the bed). If I had a tent with less mesh Perhaps it could have contained the heat in a better way.

I could definitely see how this heater would be excellent for heating sheds, garages or more rigid structures. It just didn't work as well as I thought in my type of tent.

First time I used the unit was in Oregon a few weeks past, and it did the trick. Within minutes my 11' x 14' tent went from a chilly 14 degrees to summer-like conditions. Literally, I was comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt. Definitely will not leave home in the cold months without packing up this heater.

This is great for a small trailer. Ours is 13'. If you know the weather is going to be freezing, buy the 12' hose and filter and hook it up to a 20 lb tank on the tow bar.

The price of kerosene has skyrocketed so I switched to propane. I have my Tough Buddy heater hooked up to a remote tank with the 12' hose and the filter for good measure and it works great. The only cons I have with it are the smell which no matter what anybody says is present and remains in the area of use and the ignition sequence. Starting the heater is just like an older furnace or water heater and it doesn't always work but I really can't complain compared to the hassle of my old kerosene heaters.

Using the throw away Propane bottles makes this a great portable heater. One bottle will heat on low for about five hours. You can also buy a hose to hook into a bigger Propane tank. The heater is lite, easy to ignite and easy to move. On a cold night in a tent or small camper this is a nice heater. Note: If using a hose to run this heater off a bigger tank of Propane I recommend using a fuel filter that can be purchased for this item. This keeps the heater from getting gummed up from unused propane left in the hose.

Just as good as the great reviews I read. This little heater does the job in our van, when the outside temperature was below freezing, we were toasty warm inside. Just keep a window open a crack. The small bottle lasted 6 hours on low setting. I recommend it, so if you are thinking about it get it. You won't regret it.

My daughter and I go to all her son's little league games, which are mostly at 6:30 p.m. and last 2 to 2 l/2 hrs. Before I purchased Mr. Heater, we froze. Now we're quite toasty as we enjoy the exciting games. Other parents and grandparents sit as close to us as possible, and there are a couple of little girls that always ask, "Did Mr. Heater come?"

Very simple, affordable, safe solution to cold nights in a tent or on a boat. We happened to use it on a boat, but will be using it in a garage and a tent in the future. It was easy to connect the LP Gas bottle, simple to start and produced heat immediately.

This is a great heater, and safer to use than driving to the store for a gallon of milk. If you are worried about dying from carbon monoxide, and that's your thing, don't buy a ventless heater. But if you want to stay warm on a cold day, or want emergency backup heat when the power goes out, this is an excellent choice. If you read the website about carbon monoxide deaths, please note that it is written about Coleman heaters and at the end it mentions that there are safe heaters available that shut down on low oxygen. This is one of them. Also, if you check out the Mr. Heater website, you will learn that this is a variant of heaters that are approved by most building codes for permanent installation in houses, including bedrooms.

I just received order.....price was right. This is not a furnace...I tested it for next adventure. This is a flameless radiant heater....its effect is radiation upon objects like your body or furniture....infrared. Designed to be close to you....NOT a space heater that warms air. Read and understand instructions.... I had a single burner propane stove in my tent safely overnight but when I stood up, flame burned my shirt. 'Buddy' has no flame but safety precautions must be heeded. It can be used outdoors to heat you in work area lacking wind. If power goes out, ideal 'in your face.' Fuel (propane disposable bottles) is inexpensive and readily available. 'Buddy' is large compared to radiation area but light in weight and very safe. In a cold confined space, 'Buddy' is better than hot Campbells tomatoe soup.

After reading numerous complaints about the best selling camping heater in America, I decided to buy one that looks about the same from Dyna-Glo called the Tag-A-Long. It works just right. Does what it is supposed to do. Keeps my tent warm. No problem with the pilot or whatever. Need I say more?

I use this in a hunting blind as well as camping. Its great for quick heat. Used it in 25 degree weather in a tent. In about a minute the unit had to be turned down and turned off in 5 minutes due to the heat. I'm not sure if I trust the low oxygen sensor so I would leave a window open in what every you use it in. The unit does not have an internal fan. I have owned this for about 6 months. I purchased the refurb with no problems. Best part is the low odor or none. Highly recommend for those power outage locations.

Nice little heater, will heat up your garage or any enclosed space in no time. I like the self ignite feature and the safety tip shut-off. Wind tends to blow out the flame. Get the connection hose to a larger propane bottle if you will be using this for extended periods. consider 10000 or more BTU's!

I'm a War Between The States reenactor, and bought this heater to keep me warm in my tent. It certainly does the job, and very efficiently. One canister of propane lasts the whole night. The unit itself is compact, so it doesn't take up a lot of room. One terrific safety feature shuts the heater down if it is bumped. It was a great investment!

It outshined any heater I have used in the past. The temp. dropped to 35 degrees with a heavy frost and I stayed warm with it being set on low. My tent is a 9' x17'. It uses a 1 lb. propane tank every 5 hours, set on low. I will be purchasing the hose for the 20 lb propane tank.Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Indoor/Outdoor Heater - Model# MH9B

The altitude where I live in Colorado is about 6300'. The heater works great in my garage, but if I take it camping, which is what I bought it for, it's worthless. I spent a couple of cold nights trying to keep it lit before I found out it won't work above 7000'.

We just completed our first camping trip using this heater and were very pleased with its performance. The outdoor temperature was in the low 40's, the wind was blowing at 15 with gusts to 20, and it was frequently raining. We brought a fully charged 20lb propane tank and a 10 foot extension hose so we could keep the tank outside the tent. We used the heater for about 10 hours on each of three nights (30 hours total). On two nights it was on high the whole time and on the third night we cut it down to low after about 4 hours because it was getting too warm in the tent. Even on the coldest nights I was comfortable in my shirt sleeves, but my wife was still a little chilled - her natural state. The heater was very stable and is easy to operate.

We also used the same propane tank for all of our cooking - breakfast for 4 people for 3 days, lots of hot water for coffee and dish washing for 3 days, and dinner for 4 people on 2 nights. And we've still got some gas left.

From another perspective, if not for the heater we would have had to get a motel room - the heater paid for itself in one night.

I bought this heater for 2 reasons. I wanded to use it while ice fishing. My friends and I fish in shantys so the heater keeps us nice and warm. I also live in the country and when the electriclty goes out as it often does,we have a heater to use to keep us warm. The heater has many features such as a wire frame that keeps the flame at a safe distance from anything flamable.I would buy it again.

I already had a Mr. Heater of this size that I used for ice fishing. I have been very happy with it, other than the steep price. When I saw the sale price on these, I bought two!! They are great for ice fishing, camping, power outs, anytime you might need some heat but you don't have a furnace. It took me a while to believe that I should spend more than $20 or so on a heater, but these things do kick out the heat pretty good for a small package. They are designed and built pretty well too. I really would give it 4 1/2 stars, and I wouldn't even rule out 5 but I'm just being sort of conservative and the website won't allow half stars. Well, think I'm satisfied?

If I had rated this product during the first season, I'd have said it was great. However, a few months is all you get. I have gone thru 2 of them now, both with the same result. It works great for a couple months, and then it won't stay lit. I tried customer service, and they were convinced I must have a herd of spiders inside it, and all I'd have to do was clean it out. Tried that, no luck. So with the new one, I covered the opening after every use. Same result. Plan on getting a few months out of it.

When it works it is nice. Mine tends to shut off every few minutes for no particular reason. It also burns thru propane bottles much more than advertised. I wouldn't buy one again
