compact, powerful, attractive and useful - Review written on September 26, 2008

I purchased the KitchenAid chef series mini chopper in onyx black and it's proven to be one of the most useful small appliances I've gotten for my kitchen in ages. It's the perfect size because 3 cups can hold a lot (much more than you may think) but it's not big and bulky like one of those outdated food processors (that are a monster to try to get inside the dishwasher).
I got this mainly for 2 tasks that are otherwise time consuming, chopping onions and making fresh bread crumbs and it does the jobs to the letter. I cannot believe how quick and powerful it minces the onions because within a blink of a eye it pulverizes them and before you know it you're done. I can't begin to tell you how much time this has saved me. I've also used the mini chopper for parsley, peppercorns and garlic and it also chops all of these ingredients precisely and evenly (and there's never any big or uneven chunks).
Before I got this I made the awful mistake of buying a very expensive and incredibly useless chopper from Bamburger's. I barely got 1 use out of it before it just conked out. That is not the case with the KitchenAid. You will have it for years and years because it is incredibly powerful and made of high quality parts that know how to take a beating.
As I mentioned, I really like this chopper because it dices and chops everything so evenly. That is because it has 2 blades of altering sizes that grabs the ingredients from all directions and angles inside the bowl. And, this truly is a kitchen appliance that will save you time because you'll get the job done and you won't have to worry about cleanup nor will you have to worry about any residual mess from the actual task, either.
Besides the power base, this includes the clear bowl, the lid, the blade, a detailed instructional booklet and even a rubber spatula (that's useful for other tasks as well). And everything (besides the base, of course) is dishwasher safe. Don't you hate it when those dimwits say in commercials, "but it's so easy to wash by hand..." Yeah, and so is a Donna Karen sweater. This is not 1885, I'll be damned if I'm gonna wash anything by hand.
This item is also incredibly easy to use. I've had many choppers and food processors that are a huge pain to line up and close. This has little indentations on the base, on the lid and on the bowl to let you know where to line everything up and it all clicks into place easily with a slight locking sound.
I purchased mine in onyx black (for some reason this review is defaulting to the chrome colored item, that is not the one that I got). Onyx black is actually a color that some distributors came up with, it is not a color that KithenAid uses. The true color is black. It is a shiny metallic black that will look great in any kitchen.
Keep in mind not to ever fill up the entire bowl because it could cause the unit to stop (remember this is not a blender or a mixer). If you have a large batch, simply fill it up to the blades and pour into a separate bowl when finished. At times the blades will lock (or shut down) this is a safety mechanism which happens when the unit is overused or overloaded. When this happens generally you're going to need to empty everything out of the mixing bowl, wash all parts and give it some time to rest (at least 10 minutes) and it should be fine again. (I took off 1 star because of this.)
If you're interested in getting this I strongly recommend getting it from Amazon. You can find it for a few bucks less (on QVC) however with the shipping and sales tax you'll pay more. Also I do not know of any other e-commerce site that is as quick or accommodating as far as returns are concerned besides Amazon (although QVC is pretty close). (BTW, speaking of QVC, don't you just love that KitchenAid lady that comes on every couple of weeks for on-air demonstrations? She's so cute, she reminds me of my granny.) Also if the Amazon Web site states that it's out-of-stock, don't worry because they're constantly updating their inventory so I'd still order from them.
It's no coincidence that this mini chopper is a top-rated America's Test Kitchen pick. If you're familiar with ATK then I don't need to tell you how picky and quality-conscience they are. So for this item to be among the small selection of other kitchen appliances that they use is very reassuring for a little at-home cook like me.

Went through two choppers, one TV brand broke after fourth use, Black and Decker broke after second use. I have had a KitchenAid mixer, my mother's which is over 50 years old and it still works as if it is brand new. So I ordered the KitchenAid Chopper, it should have been my first choice. Have a 3/4 acre garden, freeze green peppers, banana peppers, onions, etc and believe me I have really put my chopper to use. What a pleasure, what a great product, what was wrong with me not buying it first!!!! I love it and it just keeps going and going and going. It is a KitchenAid what can I say except EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An extra pair of hands in the kitchen - Review written on June 18, 2008

First of all, let me state that I am a huge fan of KitchenAid products. I have a KitchenAide range that makes cooking a pleasure instead of a daily chore. That is important to me since I have a full time job.
I work in the food manufacturing industry as a Quality Assurance Director. So food preparation is not just part of my daily household duties, it is also the way I make a living. I am always looking for anything that saves me time in the kitchen without compromising the nutritional quality or asthetic value of meals.
I prefer fresh vegetables and I like to season them with fresh herbs, onions, peppers, celery, celantro, etc. Chopping them is extremely time consuming. I have a 12 cup KitchenAid food processor, but it is so big, I only use it for large projects, like making carrot-raisin salad for two dozen people. It is too big to keep out on the cabinet or to use for small jobs.
My Chef Series Food Chopper is small enough to keep in a corner of my countertop. It is effecient, readily accessible, easy to clean and saves me several hours a week in preparation time. In addition, it is very affordable.
It is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. I love it!

I've had this chopper for about a month now, and I couldn't make up my mind as to which one to buy, this one or the Cuisinart until I read the recommendation on the Cooks Illustrated website. They tested several different mini choppers and this one out shined them all including the Cuisinart. So off I went to the nearest mall to buy it. As soon as I got home, I washed it by hand and proceeded to chop a medium size onion. Now you have to remember that it only has one pulse button, so if you want large chunks, you have to just barely touch it a couple of times and you will have large chunks. I wanted to mince the onion for a recipe that I was trying. I was very pleased that it minced the onion in no time. I then peeled two heads of garlic and through them in the chopper, along with 1/2 tsp. of salt and a little olive oil because I wanted to store it in a jar for future use. Again, it chopped them up on seconds. So far I was very pleased with this little chopper. Then I needed to mince several vegetables all together at one time, so I cut them into pieces and threw them into the chopper. Only this time, I filled the chopper to the top, so I thought being that this chopper was so powerful that it should mince them all with no problem. I added carrots, onion and celery and began to press the pulse button. It whipped right through the ones on the bottom and in the middle, but the ones that were on the top didn't get chopped all the way. It could be that I may have put too many veggies in at once, so I can't complain too much.
Then I decided to make bread crumbs with some stale garlic bread. When I broke up the bread and put it into the chopper to make the bread crumbs, the bread pieces kept getting stuck to the blades. So I had to keep opening it up and taking the bread pieces off the blades, then starting again. I found it to be al little inconvenient, but I am still happy with this chopper. I haven't done everything I want with it yet, like chopping nuts or crackers, but so far I like it. My meatloaf came out pretty good.

An expensive so-so chopper - Review written on March 23, 2008

I owned a Little Oscar for years and loved it. My friend gave me this Kitchenaid a year ago and it doesn't chop anything in consistant pieces. I've chopped nuts, celery, onions, carrots, etc with every variety of chop produced...from mush to totally unchopped pieces, all in one bowl. This chopper is just not worth the $40. price tag! Not only that, but I put the plastic cup in the microwave and a small metal piec in the handle (I didn't notice), melted the handle so the lid won't lock on the bowl. I have been unable to purchase a replacement bowl, even from Kitchenaide themselves.
could be better - Review written on February 09, 2008

I bought this appliance about a year ago. It's been disappointing. It's really nice to have a small chopper around for tasks that don't quite require the big food processor. But this particular model isn't quite right.
Pros:
-Compact, taking up little counter or cabinet space.
-Simple to use.
-Feeder opening on the lid is useful for slowly adding liquid.
-Parts are dishwasher safe.
Cons:
-Orientation of the blades doesn't create evenly chopped pieces of vegetables. Some pieces are too big and some are nearly pureed.
-Blades are really high from the bottom of the container making it useless for smaller quantities of food.
-Blades only spin one direction, leafy things like spinach or herbs, require the lid to be opened over and over to readjust the position of the leaves.
-It seems like the food splatters excessively inside the container, so there is a constant need to stop and scrape down the sides of the container.
I used to have a little Cuisinart chopper, which seemed so similar, but just worked better. The blades rotate in both directions, the blades are slightly longer, making the food splatter around less, requiring less scraping, and the chop was more even. The Cuisinart lasted for years, but finally... just... died. Now that I have this inferior chopper, I am finding myself pulling out much less often than the old one.
