Typical Kitchen Aid appliance - does the job, does it well and simply and dependably, without a lot of fuss.

I've had this can opener for over a year now. I will never purchase another brand again! This can opener is fantastic. It opens everything I need and cleans well. Great quality for the price.

Purchased this 1.5 years ago. Checked out other reviews to see if anyone else was having problems. Our case seems consistent with what others have said - won't open anything, slipping constantly (seems like it needs a new clutch), would be better off being direct-drive, and shreds up the paper (cosmetic, I know, but when it cuts through this so handily I wonder why it is so poor at cutting what it should). It is shameful that the brand reputation of KitchenAid would be compromised by placing it on this poorly made product.

This is perhaps the worst KitchenAid product I've ever used. It's nice looking and worked fine for a short time. Then the handle got so loose that I couldn't open any can with it. Shouldn't have taken the risk buying it at such a high price. Just didn't worth it, period.

Like many other reviewers, I have been sorely disappointed in my KitchenAid can opener. I thought it was just me at first - I thought I knew how to use a can opener, but this one just plain doesn't work. I have to try 3-4-5 times EVERY time I use this thing. Leaves uncut gaps in the lid -shreds the paper off the can and makes a mess on the counter. Keep your money & look elsewhere - this product is not up to the standards you normally associate with the name KitchenAid. I'm looking for a new one.

This can opener is so smooth to use. It makes it easy to open any can with much less effort compared to other can openers. The largeness of this can opener makes it feel very comfortable in the hand. There is no straining with this product. The best cam opener I've ever owned. It also is very, very durable. GREAT PRODUCT.

I was extremely diappointed in this simple can opener. It does not work. The gear and wheel will not cut smoothly and misses some spots. I've had to pry the lid of a partially opened can off several times.

This is a real disappointment from a name brand that has built it's reputation on quality. (How hard can it be to build a good can opener??) The blade & gear that are supposed to hold the edge of the can, don't meet well. If you DO get it to cut, it requires tremendous hand strength and multiple stops and starts, leaving uncut gaps in the rim. The handle is loose, but can't be tightened. You can buy 4 cheap can openers for the same price, that will last you for years.

It is hard to believe - but IT DOES NOT OPEN CANS. Seriously. Christmas morning with food preps well underway we discovered our brand new opener would not open cans. Unbeliveable!!

When we first bought it, it worked nicely and smoothly. Thought we do not need to buy another opener again. Boy were we wrong! After the third use, it will open only a small gap and the handle will just keep spinning. Reminds me of a car turning it's wheels will all smoke and noise but no results. Glad we still kept our old opener from a much lesser known brand. This opener certainly does damage to the KitchenAid name!

I had this opener and tried it with about a dozen cans and it lost its sharpness and now it was in the trash can. It's expensive for such a gadget and didn't work.

My entire kitchen is Kitchenaid. I bought this can opener three years ago. It was awful...difficult to use, shredded the paper at the top of the can's label, and was very difficult to get started. Because I love Kitchenaid products so much, I assumed that this was just a defective can opener, threw it away, and bought another. The second one was even worse! It worked okay the first couple of times, but now it barely cuts at all. It grinds the top of the can, making dents, but won't actually make a cut. Once I can get it started, I cannot finish it because it "messes up" the can pretty badly. This one is going in the garbage as well. :(

For years I'd bought cheap can openers in the small appliance section of the grocery store, only to have them rust out or break after a year. Once I thought I'd be a little extravagant and buy the better grocery store model for about $8, hoping it would last longer. It didn't. I've had this can opener for two years and it's still working amazingly well. I never knew how easy it could be to open a can with a good can opener. And it's still not rusted out, although I do hand wash it rather than running it through the dishwasher. This can opener is worth its price.

I cannot believe what an ergonomically ill-fitting and horribly working product this is. The best thing I can say about it is that it looks pretty. Some others are satisfied, so I can only surmise that there are vast differences in the quality of the products leaving the assembly line. Unfortunately, this brand-new can-opener is going in the trash.

I bought one of these about 6 months ago and it worked beautifully. No problems. Moved out of state and accidentally left it behind, so I replaced it with another. Will not cut. At all. I don't get it. Was there a recent lemon run of these things??

It looked like it would work,
It turned like a high quality item
It won't open even 1/6 of a can as a newly
purchased item.

Go cheap and shop old time stores for
can openers. This is an over-engineered
benz-lemon of a can opener.

I'm taking it back to Nob Hill tomorrow
morning.

Opening cans is effortless with this can opener... I have arthritis and not much strength in my hands, but I've never had a problem. After trying every brand and type of electric and manual can opener I could find with no success and doing without things in cans because I couldn't get them open... this is the last can opener I will ever need to buy! Highly recommended!

My faith in KitchenAid led me to purchase this opener, but it wasted no time in diappointing me. The problem is that it will not grip the cans consistantly, especially small ones like tuna fish. The result is a fight to perform what should be a simple routine task. Don't waste your money.

This opener feels great in the hand. It's very sturdy and has nice heft. It did a good job of cutting-at first. After a few uses, it is now useless. It no longer grips the cans. It slips constantly and no longer cuts. I replaced it with a Kuhn-Rikon safety opener. An award-winning opener that works every time. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it. I wish I had known about it before I bought this piece of garbage. I think kitchenaid should stick to countertop appliances.
It broke! - Review written on March 01, 2006

It worked fine for the two or three years we had it and then...it broke. We used the can opener at least once a week, sometimes more since we don't use an electric can opener. Defective or just worn out? It's not like we opened 10 cans a day, but I don't think it was defective from the start. Eventually one of the parts became loose and the opener no longer gripped the lid enough to open it. Frustrated, I threw it out. I now see that KitchenAid offers a lifetime warranty on defective products but even if it were defective, I don't know that it's worth my time to investigate how to send it back and ship it. Besides, it's too late. It's gone and I bought a different brand can opener.

I also thought the KitchenAid opener was a bit too hefty. It was also large and thus didn't fit very well in the utensil drawer.

I prefer manual can openers on a philosophical/aesthetic level -- not using electricity unnecessarily, not cluttering my counter -- but in reality, they are often uncomfortable, rusty contraptions I'd rather ask my husband to use. I finally splurged and got this one based on other users' recommendations.
I like it: It's comfortable -- solid, but not too heavy; no thin, flat parts to dig into my hand. Plus it's sharp and not rusting -- at least so far (2 months). I'm even washing it in the dishwasher!

I purchased this opener after trying it at a kitchen store...it seemed to have a good feel and turned smoothly. It still does, but those features are of no use when it DOESN'T CUT THE CAN! The roller and the cutter don't stay together, the can doesn't stay gripped, and it takes forever to get one single lid off. I'm gonna throw this away, and go get some cheapie opener, cause it couldn't be any worse...

I bought this can opener because it was red and I love the Kitchenaid Red, and have many other items. However, the first one wouldn't open the cans very well. It felt heavy duty, but was not. I wanted this damn can opener so bad, I took it back and bought another one from a different retailer. It was horrible too. I was very disappointed. I ended up buying a Swing-A-Way can opener for 5.99 (used by NASA, but not nearly as pretty as the Kitchenaid). The cheapie works great! Don't waste your time with the Kitchenaid.

I bought this can opener, the day I saw it. It is so easy to use and hold with arthritis. I open cleanly and easily and when the gunk is building up on the cutter, into the dishwasher it goes. Four years and still smoothly turning away.

When we first got this can opener (and, yes, we have this model, not the one that comes with the set, it has the chrome on the handles), we were quite impressed. It has a good heft and sliced through lids like a hot knife through butter, it's also quite attractive.
Then one day it didn't work quite as well, then a little worse, and a little worse. Now it just makes holes in cans and kinda mangles their edges if you squeeze it hard enough and really, really crank the handle.
Upon careful inspection we discovered that the teeth of the gears weren't lining up correctly this had caused them to grind down each other's teeth, which only made things worse. We kept looking and discovered that the gear misalignment problem was caused by a misalignment of the handles. I bent the handles back inline (so their holes lined up) and was suprised at how easily they bent (but this explained why sometimes, if I held them just right, the can opener would work a little better).
And therein seems to lie the problem. The handles, though heavy, are made of a very easliy bent metal, and once they are bent, the can opener is pretty much worthless.

Works great for the first few months. It starts skipping parts on can after a few months. Even if you try to re-open, still skips the same spots. Now I'm left with 2 parts of the top of the can that are unopen and I have to pry the can open with a utility knife, spraying whatever is in the can all over myself and the kitchen while hoping not to get a shard of metal in my eye. Fed up, going to buy ANOTHER can opener today! Not well made product for Kitchen Aid.

I've always preferred hand-operated can openers to electric; they take up less space in the kitchen, work just as well (if not better), and open cans without that annoying grinding noise. When my old faithful can opener became dull, I shopped around for a new one and settled on this KitchenAid model. The main reason I chose it was because it felt good in my hand - heavy enough to feel sturdy, but balanced enough not to feel as though I'm wielding a club. It cuts through cans the first time with a smooth turning mechanism. The gripping handles, while thicker than most, are not too large for small hands. The windmill handle is substantial as well, allowing for a good grip that doesn't cut into the hands.

Although I chose this can opener for its heft, I like it because it does its job well, with a sharp cutting wheel and an easy-to-use design. Oh yeah. It also looks great.

If you're looking to outfit your kitchen with the best, be sure to add this one to the list because it will be the last one you'll ever need. I originally wanted this as a backup to my electric one but it comes out of the drawer more and more often! It's heavy, making it easier to open those huge cans, and the dial just turns so easily it's like cutting soft butter. You just can't miss on this one!

Nice and big...doesn't get lost in the kitchen drawer...big, sturdy handles to hold onto, nice big knob for easy turning. No more fumbling and sore hands from puny knobs, and skinny handles.

Best of all...it comes apart so you can clean all that disgusting crud (yuck!) they tend to collect so much better.

This is by far the best can opener I've used in fifty-some years of opening cans. After the first time I used it I retired my old electric to the garbage. The thick handles feel solid and give you a good grip. It cuts through cans like butter. I'm thinking about buying a second one just in case something ever happens to the one I've got. I've had it for about three years and had no problems of any kind. I don't remember if the instructions said you could put it in the dishwasher. I never have because I've wanted to preserve the cutting mechanisms in their superior state. It's easy enough to wash by hand. It's so good I've given it as gifts which says a lot about something so mundane as a can opener.

Apparently there exists a lesser model. This is the one you buy alone and which has stainless steel on the handle.

When we first recieved this can opener, we were thrilled. It worked so beautifully that we stopped using our electric one. It wasn't but a couple months into it before it started skipping spots on a can lid. Frequent deep cleaning, ( at least once a week), improves it, but it still skips at least twice on an average soup can lid. I love Kitchen Aid, but this product is not worth it's weight or drawer space.

This KitchenAid can opener is probably the finest I've ever owned. The handles are large and comfortable, the wheel action is non-jarring and smooth, and it opens cans with the greatest of ease. If you get it gunked up with something messy like pasta sauce, there is a screw that allows you to dismantle the wheel assembly for easy cleaning. This makes it easy to get food out of those normally hard-to-reach areas.

Ours popped apart after having it a few months, but I called and they are sending a new one. It really is a great can-opener, and even if they weren't replacing my broken one, I would still buy another just like it. Going back to my safety can opener in the meantime has been awful - I forgot how hard to use other openers were.
