was a great idea, but sucked in reality - Review written on August 15, 2008

I did all my research on electric mowers and narrowed it down to this particular mower. It came just like it said, out of the box, tighten a few knobs and plug in and start mowing. It was light and very little vibration and it did take a little to get used to the cord. I finished the back yard and moved to the front. I plugged it back up and pulled the lever. And nothing... I check the cord and outlet, cord was fine and it s the kind that has a light on the end to show its getting power. I took it back to the back yard to double check, dead. I called the black and decker customer service, and they stated to bring it to the nearest black and decker store for service. Brand new item, broken on first use, nah. I would not recommend this item to anyone. Funny thing also, i had a conversation with a guy who used to work at a hardware store the next day after this fiasco, and he said that he was there for like 2 years and they sold like 3 and they were returned. So, i guess it on to research push reel mowers or break down and buy one that uses gas, like i dont spend enough on gas........

I hate reading manuals, a neighbor loves to and was trying to procrastinate....unfortunately, it barely took tightening a few screws/bolts(?) and I was mowing. The handle height is adjustable; I tried the height set "as is" out of the box (low to fit in the box), and I liked that it is low because it makes it more manueverable for me. It more comfortable than I've found the heights of others' mowers. Plug it in and lift the lever on the handle and it's on. On the initial pass, I forgot to consider adjusting the mower height and it cut the grass at it's lowest setting before I stopped and realized....a mistake that would (not) have made reading the instructions worth it! ;-) The height adjustment is simple - truly one touch for all 4 wheels.
So, on the initial mow, I was a bit careful, after all it's just an electric mower. The grass clipping catcher works. I'm careful to mow when it's dry. After some encouragement from a friend that electric or not, it's a mower....I've treated it with less care on my less than pristine lawn with woods and meadow encroaching....it works. It's tough and light weight and doesn't feel too big thanks to the handle height. It does have a cord, but I didn't want to deal with batteries. It's just what I was looking and at a good value.
